The rice and the fish on a given piece of nigiri should not be just as warm as one another. I'm not sure if someone left a block of tuna out or if I inherited some "certified preowned sushi"; neither option sits well. I like my raw fish with wasabi and soy sauce, not with the thoughts of immediately picking up a foodborne pathogen. I'm really glad I live downtown so this place is within walking distance. It's absolutely delicious sushi, and the $17.99 deal (3 rolls, 4 nigiri, 1 appetizer) is totally a perfect dinner for two. I've been here twice and was completely satisfied with my meal and impressed with the friendliness of the staff. Free Wi-Fi is also a plus, and when I went a couple of days ago the password is "lovesushi". Good sushi for a cheap price downtown. That's the short version. Longer version: All you can eat sushi for dinner is $19.99. The all-you-can-eat menu is not the full menu, but it covers probably 75-80%, just not some of the specialty rolls. I went with my fiancee and we had: edamame, crab rangoon, 5 rolls plus 6 pieces of sashimi. The crab rangoon, the St. Louis, and the Spider rolls were our favorites, but none were bad. But the sushi was poorly made with little fish, too much rice, and too much vinegar in that rice, turning what I usually find to be an enjoyable contest against my own body's capacity into a sad day for my digestive system. I think it's most fair that I compare this place to other Sushi Ai s. This one has less chance of running out of fish, less of a crowd, a dimly lit atmosphere with some interesting art, a salad bar, and faster turnaround time than the Maryland Hts one. But the all you can eat menu is considerably smaller, and they don't keep the drinks coming even at slower times of the day. Nope. Would not go back. I will say this...the service was excellent, which is why I'm giving it two stars but the sushi is just not good. It's not even average. I moved back to STL after living in So Cal for many years, where you get some of the best sushi on the planet, but even STL has sushi far superior to this place. It did not taste fresh at all and immediately upset my stomach afterward, a signature sign for me of lack of freshness. So although the host and waitress were incredibly friendly and the service was fast and really on-point, we will not be returning, which is a shame because the all-you-can-eat deal is really great. A friend discovered this place last summer. He convinced a group of us to go here after class, for their 12.99 lunch special all-you-can-eat. Depending on how much you can eat, the price is definitely worth it. An order of 4 rolls and 2 appetizers definitely sets you back over 13 dollars. However the sushi is not exactly the best, nor fresh, and to me, every roll seems to taste the same. I'm most likely biased from the sushi joints back home in California. This same friend is ecstatic about the place; he always raves about coming back here for their all-you-can-eat. After a while however, I begin to diverge from their buffet menu and order from their normal one. Glancing past their sushi and rolls off their regular menu, Sushi Ai has a satisfactory selection of bento boxes and side dishes. While this place advertises serving Japanese food, the workers and selection of music playing overheard begs to differ. The whole environment is a mix of Chinese and a little Japanese. Their Orange Chicken (??), Teriyaki Beef and Chicken all do not have any resemblance to true Japanese food. In a way, the food tastes rather dull and not worth the $10+ price. I've since been here at least 10 times. Sometimes my friends drag me along for the sushi but I've found the quality and service to be inconsistent. Sometimes the rolls taste fresh, whereas sometimes it's obvious that the ingredients have been sitting out for a while. Moreover, the first couple of times I came here, there was this one particular waiter that lingered awkwardly over us, and objectively cut in to ask if we needed more water. At the end, he even stopped us before we went out the door asking for a tip. The hell? However it seems that Sushi Ai has let that particular waiter go and their service has seen been improved. The atmosphere is average, nothing too special. My friends and I are always seated at the same exact table. Nothing to really complain about though. After passing over their all-you-can-eat menu, I have found the Shrimp Tempura Dinner specialty to be the best thing for me. The order comes with 6 generous pieces of shrimp tempura, along with 4 pieces of potato, broccoli, and cucumber. The batter is nice and crunchy, the sauce is sweet. It is also served with a side of miso soup and sub-par tasting ginger sauced salad. Overall, Sushi Ai is ok. They do have a 10% discount for students of neighboring schools such as Wash U, STLCOP, and SLU. It basically waives out the price of tax. After coming here a number of times, each visit seems to be more and more drawn out. I know that I am spoiled by the taste and delicacy of California sushi/Japanese food. What a great experience, overall! We were a little put off by the entrance (it still looks like Jade, the club/bar that used to be there), but inside, we were pleasantly surprised. It's HUGE but still manages to feel like a dining experience. The lighting is dim, but updated and decorative. The all you can eat sushi made me think "sushi bar" where the food had been sitting out all day, but it wasn't like that at all! You order what you want, they bring it, you order more if you want more...as easy as that! The sushi was fresh and very well made. I have to admit, though, that my favorite part was the apps. We had dumplings that were TO DIE FOR! Seriously- get them. The crab rangoon was excellent, as was the shrimp shumai. My boyfriend got the Miso soup too, and said it was good. The salad bar was small, but very clean, and had just the right amount of stuff, with GREAT dressings (a bit on the avant guarde side)! And then there's the staff. As a Southern Calfornian, I came here not expecting too much, but my experience here was horrible. I'm familiar with sushi restaurants trying to limit the amount of sushi that is consumed by customers by using a large amount of rice as the base. However, Sushi Ai makes it blatantly obvious. Each tightly packed block of rice was around 2 inches long 1 inch wide and 1 inch tall. What other choice is there but to take some of the rice out to save my appetite. I tried speaking with the manager but she tells me that this is the usual amount. I feel horrible for the customers that have been cheated by coming here. The gals wanted to do sushi for lunch at work and despite my recent mehness about sushi i decided to tag along. Let's get the bad out of the way first. The service was S-L-O-W. They were really busy and sat us upstairs with one other table. Our secluded location may of been why we didn't see our waitress often, and she never brought us the fork we asked for nor came to collect our payment after she brought our bill. Normally i would not even stress about slow service but it was weekday lunch and we needed to get back to the office! Hopefully this was just a fluke and certainly would not stop me from going back. The rest of lunch was great. They have a fantastic all you can eat deal for lunch and dinner. Even if you don't intend on eating 10 courses 12.99 (its more expensive for dinner) was a very fair price tag. The all you can eat menu is a limited subset of their rolls and apps but its a very nice variety of different types of rolls and such. Since i was not keen on sushi that day I went for the Bento box which was around $7. It was a fair amount of food and got me full enough. My only complaint would be that its carb heavy and didn't have enough protein - but that is what a bento box is so I really should not fault them for this. If you work downtown hit up Sushi Ai for lunch, just make sure you have time so you won't be rushing back to the office for a meeting! Alright so In the Lou for a few weeks on a client. We decided that we wanted to grab sushi and it is hard to find some authentic Japanese/Asian food. With that said Sushi Ai does a good job at trying to fill that gap. We decided to come here as it was within walking distance to the stadium before a game. We walk over to this joint and the interior is decorated in a sleek almost night club like décor. It is dimly lit and very spacious. The sushi bar is in the center of the room which was interesting as I had never seen that before. The servers were very friendly and even joked along with our table as were relatively loud. We ordered roughly 8 rolls or so and they were all solid. We also ordered a few nigiri rolls and they were solid as well. The rolls itself were the standard variety of rolls and although the rice ratio was a bit high, I appreciated that the sauces were not overdone to just make it a glob of a roll. The nigiri was also very solid and tasted fresh which I appreciated but they did not have a huge variety. They also have an all you can eat Lunch and Dinner special which is the basic rolls. I did not order any of these because they were items I would not typically ordered so no comments on that menu but seemed like a good deal. So I struggled with making this a 3 or a 4 star rating because I would say that if this joint was located in Cali, it would easily be a 3 but being that this is in downtown STL and in my opinion better than Wasabi based on service, price, and quality of food, I decided to go with a 4 star rating. read more

Most of the reviews reflect the $17.99 all you can deal, if that's what you're looking for, it's one of the better deals in town. However, if you're looking for good sushi, try somewhere else. The sushi at grocery stores are even better than the ones here. The rolls were unremarkable and the prices were average. The shocking part of the dinner was when I asked for hot sake, and the waitress brought a room temperature bottle to our table and asked if I would like to have it microwaved! Lets be real....When it comes all you can eat sushi for $12.99 you arent exactly expecting to have the best experience of your life. But sushi AI does a pretty good job of making it happen. As expected their rolls are light on the goods and heavy on the rice but the gyoza is suprisingly delicious and the spicy tuna is a delight. I love the sushi ai over in Clayton and tried this one on a groupon. Fortunately, they let me apply it to their amazing $20 all you can't eat sushi deal! Maybe the best price I've ever gotten for good sushi rolls in my life! The server was very friendly and helpful. We always had refills and never had to wave him down to order our next round. When we walked in, my party was ravenously hungry and our appetizers were out in a flash! Love the veggie tempura and ika yaki. Maybe it was the day of the week? Time of year? But the nigiri sushi (cuts of fish) had much less flavor than their clayton location. I adjusted and ordered more rolls, and mackerel, bbq eel, and masago... things with lots of flavor you can't mess up. Looking at the other reviews, the alaskan roll we got also had noticably less salmon than the other location. I can highly recommend the rolls and the price. The service is also better than the Clayton location. For some reason the fresh fish was not the same. Based on other reviews, this could be a bland trend. Definitely still a great place if you like interesting rolls. If you have a small appetite, this place is not for you. If you want a whole meal of maki, this place is fantastic. Way better than grocery store and even better than some sushi bars that just don't know how to do rolls. Try the crazy spicy crab roll, american dream roll(which they make like a dragon roll), and fried St. Louis roll(dessert with honey?). Side note: Rolls are less traditional or Japanese. Everybody has their own opinion on what makes a good roll. Many places aren't creative enough or don't use the right flavors and textures to make good rolls. I enjoy them here (. I ate there last night with my husband around 9pm. As soon as we drove home, I had stomach cramps and was burping a lot. I took a two hour nap and woke up feeling worse. I puked three times and feel weak and cold. I tried 4 raw fish such as yellow tail, salmon, and macarol. The sushi tasted and smelled fine, but I believe I received poisoning. If this persists, I may have to go to the doctor and assume a parasite from contaminated, poorly prepared fish caused me to get sick. Came to Sushi Ai encouraged by the reviews of the lunch all-you-can-eat. Found the selection on the menu for AYCE to be great, and the rolls came out nicely and neatly presented. Service up through the food was good. However, when the bill came, rather than being charged the $12.99 lunch price for our meal at noon, we were charged dinner $19.99! Given there were three of us, the difference of $21 was substantial, and also quite frankly given the level of hunger we had completely unnecessary. Had we known, we could've easily ordered a la carte for less. We asked our server about it, who informed us that because it was Labor day they were charging dinner prices (for lunch). Well that's a nice surprise...Given we had no idea, we were upset. When it was clear we were not getting anywhere discussing this, he brought over his manager, who likewise informed us summarily that it was dinner price today. We reiterated we were not told that upon ordering, at which point our server lied and claimed he had said 'dinner.' In any event, they were kind enough to comp us the equivalent of the tax ($2*). Seriously. I've been here a couple of time with friends. My one friend and I wanted reasonably priced sushi after an event that we went to and found this place to try. We recently came back with another friend for some all you can eat sushi. The fish isn't bad at all. It's cold and seems to be safe to eat. The rolls are really good. They have a few fried rolls, which can be really good. There isn't one stand out roll that they are well known for, most of the rolls are standard with small changes to make the look unique to the store. Our server was really nice and friendly. She was helpful and got my friend his order right away when it was forgotten. She made sure we had drinks and food all in a timely manner. I was very pleased with the service. Will totally come back, when a Cards game isn't going on because parking is nasty when there is a Cards game going on. But, we still will come back. read more

Sure its dirt cheap for AYCE sushi (on Sundays it is BOGO half off, so we spent $30 for 2 people). But I've had much better. I'm not even from California. The rolls were pretty tiny (you could always just order more I guess, but these seemed pretty small). The selection was just ok. It seemed like all the rolls were basically the same. One item on the menu was spicy tuna, crunchy, topped with tobiko...in addition to a spicy tuna roll and what seemed like 3-4 slight variations on the same thing. 3 stars because it is cheap, the fish was fine, but this place is pretty average. read more

Sushi Ai is in a little cubby in the downtown area. The interior is much bigger though and has the sushi making station in the center. The prices are perfect for sushi and are actually a bit inexpensive! They have a lot of roll options even for the plane-jane sushi eaters like myself. They also have non-sushi items of Japanese kind (tempura, teriyaki chicken, miso soup, etc). My friend and I split a few rolls and were full in no time. Service was quick and friendly. It's a bit out of the way for me, but I would eat here again. They have the added benefit of being open on Mondays which, for whatever reason, isn't super common with sushi places. read more

3.5 ish stars. This is a casual sushi place in St. Louis. It is just not going to be the kind of amazing sushi prepared by a world famous sushi chef in Japan so it shouldn't be compared to that. It is, however, perfectly acceptable sushi and if you are into all you can eat sushi lunch like some of my co-workers then it's probably perfect for you. Everything I had was perfectly ok. I did think that for an all you can eat sushi type place the ratio of rice to fish with the nigiri was actually pretty good, meaning they respected that the fish does not need a whopping chunk of rice (mostly geared at filling you up sooner) with it. So I have some respect for them for not overloading the nigiri with rice since they do the all you can eat special. The spicy tuna roll was I had was a decent version of a spicy tuna roll and I enjoyed everything I tried from the all you can eat sushi menu. My co-workers really liked that they have the hot bar with tempura, dumplings, crab rangoon, etc. and the salad bar. We used to live near Sushi Ai, and now we travel back downtown for AYCE Sushi goodness. Best time to go is Sunday when it's BOGO half off. You can start with appetizers (miso soup, pot stickers, chicken skewers), and then move on to all the sushi you can eat. We enjoyed the rolls - I go sweet (check the Honey Roll and the St. Louis Roll), she goes spicy, and we both get happy. Service is hit-or-miss depending on how busy they are. They also have a salad bar and a hot bar (I think just for lunch or maybe weekdays). Reasonably priced. Protip: Park in the garage directly across from Sushi Ai, take the ticket option. When you're done stuffing yourself, go in to the grocery store Culinaria (bottom level of said garage) and buy anything (even one item) and get your parking validated. There is a time limit on this (I think it's 1-2 hours depending on the day), so you can't just park there and spend the afternoon downtown, but we've used this tip many, many times to avoid meters/hunting for parking. read more
