This place is right down the street from me. I've been here a couple times after covid and before. Before covid, I sat at the bar and got the chefs sushi order. It came with a basic miso soup and salad. Both tasted like they bring them in. Nothing different from all the other cookie cutter sushi spots. The sushi was great though. The selection was a little out of the box from a regular cookie cutter sushi spot. I enjoyed it and since then have been back a few times. After covid I would just pick up a Chirashisushi. It was very good and reasonably priced. The distance from my home makes it an easy fast food choice for an online order and pick up. read more

This is our go to sushi spot and we love bringing friends with us. The rolls are always big, and delicious and pretty cheap. The service is always super friendly and even when they're busy, we don't wait more that 10-15 minutes. Parking can be tricky so plan for that or lyft if you're local. Make sure to check in and get your free small hot sake! Highly recommend the Mamacita roll, the popcorn shrimp, honestly we haven't had a bad roll. read more

Word of caution: names of rolls may be slightly inappropriate or disturbing for certain age groups. So families: if you're planning a kids birthday or inviting the entire fam-bam and want to stay conservative...you may want to take a quick glance at the menu beforehand. But on to the food. I probably took 15 minutes trying to decide what kind of roll I wanted. Their roll menu is a single page with columns of all their rolls (tempura, baked, fresh, etc.). Honestly, it's a little overwhelming since it's all just letters and no pictures. Note: Prices are also not listed as well. On the other hand, J was quick and ended up with a 2-item bento with chicken teriyaki and sashimi ($13.95). And when I (finally) decided, I ordered the Natural Viagra roll ($13.95) and Shishito Peppers. Before our meals came out, our server brought over some cinnamon chips. While it was good on its own, I thought it was a really bad combo considering what I was about to have. What happened to just serving good ol' edamame? I'll also echo the same thing others have mentioned: portions are HUGE. I mean, take a look at my roll. It was definitely hard to eat and I ended up making a huge mess trying to eat each piece. This was my first time at Sushi Bear and this review is based primarily on the food since I took it to-go because of COVID. There was no wait when I went to pick up the food and it was easy to just walk in and speak to the host. The food was ready by the expected time which was great. However, the food was lacking in terms of quality and taste. The flavors were average, but the fish did have a "fishy" taste. I ordered three dishes for myself and one other person. We finished the majority of the meal, but after driving back and resting at home we both had an upset stomach. We did not consume anything that would cause this pain, except the sushi from earlier. It pains me to revise my rating as Sushi Bear has been a go-to local sushi restaurant for me for a long time. We got to-go orders a bunch of times during COVID and all had been satisfactory except for today. 1st strike: My order was wrong. We did not have a small order, and the person who took my order did not repeat the order back to me. We didn't realize that we were given two more orders of the same sushi until we got home. 2nd strike: The sushi rice was was very overcooked, mushy, and flavorless. 3rd strike: The quality of the fish has gone way down. Except for the salmon belly, everything else did not taste fresh. They lacked flavor and had a mushy texture. I could not tell that I was eating yellowtail if I closed my eyes. We've done curbside from this place a couple times now and it really hits all the right spots. It's hard these days to have a consensus on what you're hungry for when you've been eating beans and pasta for a week and your cravings are all out of whack - but this place has a really nice range of options, so we'll keep coming back. Typically what we do here are their unique take on jalapeño poppers and then whatever sushi sounds right, but their fried rice and gyoza is good too! I'm usually suspicious of expansive menus, thinking there's a jack of all trades master of none type situation. Sushi Bear seems to be an exception and we haven't disliked anything we've tried. This place is NOT an authentic sushi place, and the servers they hired weren't even trained correctly, no knowledge of food items on menu at all, they should be ashamed of this. Food wasn't even good, do NOT waste your time coming here, not worth the money. If I could not be so polite I would send back almost all the plates. We went in for dinner and the place was poorly ventilated, we were so sweaty when waiting for sushi to arrive so I asked if they can turn on the AC in the front, and they said the front AC is not working.... How do they even run a sushi restaurant when it's so hot in there,...? So what was I referring to waitress knowledge, here it goes. When I first sat down I asked if they have fresh ankimo today, she said what? So I told her oh ankimo is monkfish liver (at this time the barcode was taking forever to load the menu so I thought its faster to ask her). She asked again "mountain fish?" I said, not it's monkfish liver, and she still didn't get it, I repeated 5 times and I said it's ok it's a type of liver, can you just ask the chef about monkfish liver and I'll check the menu after it loads. I heard her walking to the bar and asked "do we have monk.. uh... fish? (Completely ignored the liver part)... and of course they don't have it. Anyways, when my frd arrived we order a medium size sashimi plate, a bottle of cold sake, few appetizers and sushi. When the sake arrives, we told her the place is too hot, do you have a ice bucket to keep the sake cold (the bottle she gave us didn't even feel that cold), and she asked I'm not sure... so we told her to ask, then of course she came back and said no we have no such thing. Wow, which sushi restaurant serving cold sake doesn't have an ice bucket, it's a joke. So when we drank it, it was almost like very slight cooler than room temperature, NOT how you should drink cold sake... sigh. Ok fine. That's not the worse, wait for it... when our sashimi platter arrived, she dropped it off and left, me and my frd looked at each other and said, uh there are 6 or 8 diff types of sashimi on here, which one is which, normally it's standard when a waiter brings a sashimi platter they will tell you which fish is which. She literally turned around and left. Anyways, when waitress came back with another dish, we asked her nicely and pointed to one white fish on the sashimi platter we weren't sure what it was and asked can you tell us which fish is this? And she replied, "it's just one of the mixed fish" me and my frds were so shocked by her comment we looked at each other and asked again, yes we know it's a mixed sashimi platter but we are asking specifically what types of fish is on this plate so we know what we are eating, she looked so awkward and said, I don't know. (At this point she didn't even take initiative to say I can go ask the chef), we had to tell her could you please go ask the chef? In the mean time another waitress came by and she grabbed her and asked hey do you know what that fish is, and the other server just shrugged the shoulder and said i think it's... but not sure. And just walked away. Now we are talking about not just 1 but both servers have no idea what they are serving in a sushi restaurant. Frankly, get your act together before you serve food guys!!!!! By the end, we didn't even finish the sashimi coz it was just not very good and plus so hot inside, my sweat was dripping down the back and I was wiping it with napkins, we lost appetite and didn't even want to continue eating. Our bill came out to be $130, so while she came by with the credit card swipe machine my frd asked is the gratuity included yet, she looked dumbfounded like she didn't know what "gratuity" meant, so we had to tell her it means tip. Oh my freaking .... This is such a rundown place, AC broken at a sushi restaurant, staff had no idea what they are serving, no knowledge about what type of fish on sashimi, chefs didn't seem to care about food quality, me and my friend said this is just beyond laughable. Great sushi, great service. My family loves to come here, they remember you by name. Alex the sushi chef here is awesome and always knows what's great that day to try. I love everything that is on the black board. (Normally what is fresh that day.) They also have pretty good rolls. I love gobo so anything with gobo in it I am happy. I recommend the DHA or the EPA - Tuna or Yellowtail, gobo, avocado topped with yellowtail and lemon zest, sauced with Yuzu and Ponzo. So good! Come for the great fish and the friendly service. My father in law came to town for my birthday and insisted on getting us all sushi for dinner. They tasted alright...nothing to really boast about. If you like quantity over quality then you might like this place. That night we had a new server so she had no idea what the menu consisted of and was unable to answer any questions. These oysters are ginormous and have a lot of different flavors combined but they some how all work out. I wanted to order another but had to refrain -Uni Sashimi: The uni was so sweet here and nicely presented. We had it on the same plate as the King Salmon, which was a little thinly cut for me but tasted fresh and fatty *noms*. I want more of that uni right now! -Sashimi Salad: the presentation was a little flat and there was a lot of dressing on it but the fish pieces in the salad were delicious. I liked the variety and cuts -Fresh Spring Rolls: probably one of my favorite things here. It was light, low carb and fresh. They had a light up cube in the middle of it too, which was very unique. We came here for lunch with order of sushi & sashimi combo ($28), blue fin, o-toro, live sweet shrimp, kumamato oyster, and uni with fresh wasabi ($3). The service is just okay. We have to wait for 20 min even there is only one family before us and the restaurant is not full with several empty tables. About the food, I recommend to order sushi on the recommended sign in front of the restaurant. The sashimi in the combo is too thick. However, the fresh wasabi is a plus, we really love to have sushi with that wasabi. Before making live sweet shrimp sushi, the chef showed those shrimp to us to make sure the shrimp are still alive. The shrimp head will be deep fried and we can eat all of them with the little bit aour sauce in the glass. It is so good however the shrimp is not so sweet :) In our order, we loved the oyster and o-toro most. Make sure you try them here. We surely will be back but hope the service is better. read more

All kinds of exotic fish are served here. As soon as you enter it's a very lively vibe and you're greeted by the whole staff. For appetizers so far I've tried the tako yaki and the spicy garlic edamame. The tako yaki was very crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with a chewy piece of octopus. Yum! The spicy garlic edamame is perfect to munch on while I wait for the fresh rolls to come out. The seasoning is perfect, not too overbearing and not too underwhelming. If you're not into ordering any appetizers, they also give out free churro chips to chew on while you wait. As far as fresh rolls, there are so many options to choose from, all of which are finely crafted with their fresh fish. My personal favorite is the Kiss of Fire roll. Aesthetically, the roll is presented very well. Other notable rolls are the Natural Viagra and the Final Fantasy roll. To top it all off, there are also many choices to choose between. On my visit I had the Green Tea brulee. I'm not too big on deserts or sweets in general, but I enjoyed it because it wasn't too sweet or too bland. The service was amazing here. My server was Jenny and she was the sweetest. She was very knowledgable and able to recommend me some very delicious rolls! Water refills were prompt and checked up on my table to make sure everything was tasting great. PROS -Great service -Fresh, good quality fish CONS -Tons of rice (more than normal) in nigiri and rolls -Overpriced (this is the main reason we won't be back: red snapper nigiri $8 and salmon nigiri both cost $8 each (so $4/one piece for standard/non-exotic fish at Lunch time). This is more than we pay at sushi places by us in Newport Beach and you'd think that for being in a low rent district they wouldn't charge such high prices (rolls were around $13 each too and while they had an impressive selection none tasted really memorable) For $13.95 my kids had a 3 item bento box(beef teriyaki, CA roll, shrimp/veggie tempura that also came with miso soup, green salad (with a tummy dressing), cucumber salad, potato salad, rice and orange slices : Now that seemed like good value and actually tasted better than our sushi! I do not like leaving negative reviews for small local restaurants. However my experience at this place left much to be desired. I will start with a positive. Service was prompt and efficient. For the price I expected better quality. When the platter arrived I was hit with a fishy smell. I should have sent it back but I thought perhaps it may have been one piece or so. As I started eating different pieces, it was clear that the fish was not the freshest. It wasn't spoiled, per se', but definitely on its last day. The sushi and sashimi are "chef's choice", that should have been my red flag. Chef needed to get rid of that fish. The Aloha roll was covered in cilantro. I drive from Irvine down to Tustin for the sushi at Sushi Bear. Because there is high quality sushi there at very reasonable prices! During this COVID-19 crisis, I haven't really eaten out because I worry about the possible fear of exposure. It's our first time eating food from a restaurant in the last 3 months. My husband ordered "to-go" from Sushi Bear yesterday and I felt VERY SAFE and appreciate their effort to keep a safe distance from their customer. When you enter, there is a desk about 8 feet from the counter. The desk has a small credit card terminal, when you're done paying, you pick up your food from the side. The cashier has a k95 mask on and never come close to you. Let's talk about how amazing their sushi is! My go to favorites are: natural viagra and candy cane! After seeing Sushi Bear on Yelp I finally decided to try this place out on a Friday night. We got there around 5:30 and I'm glad there was no wait! Staff are super friendly and constantly checking if we are okay and if we needed anything. The restaurant is cute and surprisingly big for a sushi place. Appetizers we ordered were rock popcorn shrimp & wagyu beef tataki. I have to say the wagyu did not disappoint. It had the perfect flavor, not overly salty and just melts in your mouth (be sure not to leave it on the salt for too long, will over cook). As for entree we ordered beef yakisoba, a bento box with 3 choices (salmon, tempura, & sashimi) , 3 orders of salmon nigiri, 2 orders of tuna nigiri, crunch tempura roll, & baked scallop roll. This was a lot of food for a party of 4 because the portions are HUGE! The sashimi and nigiri are double the size compared to other places but it also tastes perfectly fatty (soft)! Pretty good quality for the price! They put a lot of work into their dishes. The tempura roll was so cute! The roll was covered in like colorful tempura and adding a orchid flower really made the dish unique. Ended the night with the green tea creme brûlée. It was a pretty decent size that we decided to share or maybe because we had too much for dinner. Definitely something to try. Very interesting flavor. When we left there was a huge wait. Decided to celebrate my birthday with takeout from Sushi bear. Good sushi has been hard to come by for the past year or so, but Sushi Bear saved the year for me:-D Large cuts of fish that tasted fresh and looked fresh, even the 30 minutes or so it took from pick up to consumption did not cause the rice to become stale or the fish to taste blah. Pricing is on par for normal a la carte, but the portions are generous, and you will feel full. Soooo good! Went here a few times in the last two weeks and really enjoyed. The seating could be a bit better, as they have you crammed next to other people if you aren't in a booth. But the service is friendly enough and the chefs are very fun to watch and make delicious sushi. We ordered 4 rolls, two beers and a drink and paid a little under $80 with the tip included. They also have a rewards program so you can get discounts or things for free when you come regularly. We like how late it is open, and It's also across the street from my home and that's a big plus.
