Mixed tempura & egg fried rice with miso soup & salad. Tip: This combo is sooo good but only available during lunch.

I was craving for a healthier lunch yesterday and since Full Moon Sushi has gone out of business, I decided to go to El Camino Plaza knowing there are a few options there for japanese food and plenty of parking. I haven't been to Kitajima in a very long time as my last experience was not good. This time it was great, friendly service and great food. I ordered their Sashimi lunch which came with miso soup and salad.

We came here before a karaoke night out. Seemed like a good compromise since they are right next door and serve both Japanese and Thai cuisine options. We ended up mostly ordering Japanese foods but had a couple Thai dishes in the mix. We started with the garlic edamame. Very flavorful and delicious! I am not a big edamame fan but adding in the soy and robust garlic flavors really made this dish pop. The jalapeno poppers came next. They are a more flavorful version of regular cream cheese jalapeno poppers with the addition of imitation crab and spicy mayo filling. The jalapenos were good because they still had a bit of crunch to them for texture. These poppers are not spicy at all. I guess they remove all the seeds and ribs before filling and frying. The shrimp boat was an interesting dish to try. Usually you see versions of masago/quail egg yolk on top of uni and rice with nori. Serving it on top of the ubiquitous imitation crab salad and a lightly cooked butterflied shrimp was novel to me. I don't think it quite worked overall because it was a huge bite. Trying to split it in half somehow would have made a giant mess of the assorted eggs. The creaminess of the quail yolk was very pleasing and tied all the elements together however. Drunken noodles arrived with fragrant wok hei which is always welcome. The tofu was well handled, soft on the inside with a crispy edge. We had also ordered green curry but it wasn't anything special. Needed more curry and fish sauce flavor and lacked any significant amount of chicken. We ordered three rolls: OC, Bangkok, and Kitajima. The Kitajima was the winner of the bunch, flavorful with textural interest from the fried onions topping. Three other two rolls were bland and interchangeable. Rolls are not my preferred way to eat sushi but are the most adaptable for family style eating. They were fine but only okay. We also ordered hot sake, of which there was only one option. Dessert mochis are just freezer box mochi but plated like a tiny ice cream sundae. Cute but low effort. Convenient location with uneven hits and misses. I would probably come again if I was headed to the karaoke next door immediately afterwards but wouldn't seek it out especially any other time. 3.5 stars rounded up. Service was friendly but a bit slow, requiring multiple requests for the same items. They should consider replacing the booths because the one I sat in was pretty tired out with the spot where apparently most people sit in had no tension and just sagged.

Kitajima has become a local favorite of ours. We stopped by last night for dinner. The restaurant was pretty busy and continued to get busier throughout our meal. The restaurant staff always greets us when we walk in and the staff is always kind. Love the ambiance here. The food portions are generous too. We started with the veggie tempura and both ordered the dinner combo, which has a great number of options to choose from. We got the chicken teriyaki with spicy tuna that also came with salad, white rice, and miso soup. Look forward to coming back again soon.

Overall, I have to say this place is solid. It's a great place to go if you're in the mood for Thai and Sushi. It is in a strip mall close to Cream Pan and there's plenty of parking. If you order the edamame, I'd go for the garlic. It just adds more flavor to the appetizer. The chicken Satay was ordinary, I didn't think that there was anything outstanding about it. The spring roll on the other hand was absolutely delicious. The Pad Thai is spot on. I had a variety of rolls: Kitajima roll, red dragon roll, trust me roll, Beijing, roll, and the OC roll. I think my favorites were the trust me and OC rolls. I don't know what it was but the flavors seemed to have gone so well together. Don't get me wrong, we did finish it all!. Service was great, we seemed to have gone when there were fewer people there so that was a bonus. The ambiance is rather chill, it isn't usually loud with the hustle and bustle like most Japanese restaurants that I've been to.

Great Service, Food, is amazing I comeback is one of my favorite places I recommend the Sushi so delicious and open to modify if you need

Tom Yum soup and lobster hand roll on soy!

We have been coming to Kitajima for almost over 20 years and it's always a beautiful experience to be greeted and treated as family! The sushi is always superb, and possibly the best sushi spot in the OC! And, lately, we ventured out to try their Thai! The Tom Yum soup is extraordinarily delicious! Our son keeps trying different items on the menu and loves going to the place where "they treat us as family!" Wicha is a gracious chef that loves watching people enjoy his dishes!

We each ordered a Combo B bento box, and also shared a Final Fantasy specialty roll. We only waited like 10 minutes for our food. All of the food was standard of what you'd expect in Japanese cuisine. No complaints! The interior of Sushi Bear is clean, and the staff is very kind and hospitable. The last time I ate at Sushi Bear was 7 years ago, so I anticipated they would continue serving authentic Japanese food which they certainly did! There's usually sufficient parking in the plaza.

We ordered the following: Agedashi Tofu: This was honestly the highlight of the meal. I have been craving this appetizer, but not many places around here actually offer it. The last place I tried this was at Haku, and I was not impressed by it. However, the tofu here was really good! It was hot, crispy, and the sauce was perfectly sweet and salty. It comes with 4 larger sized pieces of tofu, which I thought was great, but could have been more for the price. Stir Fry Udon: This dish was advertised outside on one of their stand up signs by the front door. This is part of what brought us in, but upon receiving it, I was not too impressed. The sauce was extremely dark and it already looked salty. When I actually tasted it, I was not surprised that it tasted exactly how it looked. It was way too salty and saucey to the point, we were eating one bite then drinking water right after. It was a pretty simple dish with what looked like frozen carrots and peas and some cut up chicken. Lunch Bento Box Option 2: We opted in for the teriyaki salmon, gyoza, and salmon roll. It came with a side of salad and miso soup. The salmon was cut very thin and it did not have enough teriyaki sauce on it. It was on the dry side. The gyoza was nothing too special. Just felt frozen then dried with gyoza sauce. Miso soup and salad were also just decent. The best part of this meal probably had to be the salmon roll. I liked the big portions of salmon and the little rice on the outside. This was the perfect balance instead of just getting a mouthful of rice each bit like most other sushi places do. I think this place was decent, overall. The prices were definitely on the higher side for what you get. Nothing too much to rave about other than the agedashi tofu, so I will be by for that again, but not sure if I would necessarily get anything else. Service was attentive and great. Just know, not all their offerings are actually listed on the menu, so we did not even know how much the stir fry udon was until we got charged for it.

The fish was so fresh, service was fast and attentive, music was good, and the vibe was very enjoyable. Spicy tuna crispy rice: other than our favorite sushi place that sadly closed, this one was the best we've ever had. The crispy rice patty is fairly flat, which is way better and offers far superior crunch than the thick ones. "New style" salmon sashimi with white truffle: delightful. Salmon nigiri: we didn't think it could be this much better than other places. But it was. Seared escolar: I hadn't seen this on a menu in years and got really excited. It was just as incredible as I remembered. Absolutely amazing. Nevada Roll and Red Crunchy Roll: excellent. Perfect tempura flakes and perfect eel sauce. This place nickel and dimes customers for everything. We were charged $6 just to add cucumber to a roll, $4 to add gobo, and even an extra charge to add lemon. The biggest issue wasn't even the prices, it was that our waiter never mentioned any of these upcharges when we ordered. If you're going to charge premium prices for simple additions, customers deserve to be told beforehand. We've eaten at countless sushi restaurants over the years, and we've never been charged these kinds of fees for basic add-ons, especially without any warning. It felt deceptive and left a terrible impression. Restaurants don't lose customers over a few dollars. They lose them when customers feel misled. Transparent pricing builds trust. Hidden charges destroy it. We won't be coming back, and unfortunately, we can't recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an honest dining experience.

My wife ordered the Inaka Hot Soba and I ordered the Beef Curry. Both are presented very beautifully. We also got a Crunchy Sushi Roll to share which was super delicious and a perfect appetizer before the main entrees. The Inaka Hot Soba was very delicious, it's similar to a mazesoba mix + bibimbap which both are one of my favorite dishes. Soba noodles were not tough at all and very savory. Many flavors mixed all in one bowl was the perfect dish overall. The beef curry was absolutely delicious as well. Filled with curry flavoring on the beef, it was not super overwhelming and it was very fulfilling overall. Absolutely love the portions as well. Overall, a amazing spot in Tustin that's lowkey hidden. Food is high quality and definitely made with care. Staff is fast and professional. Absolutely coming back in the near future to try their other menu items. They have more than just soba, sushi rolls, and curry. Excited to try their other sushi rolls + udon as well.
