I've lived across the street from this place for ages and finally went in. Good decision as I have found my new spot for sushi. Excellent happy-hour prices, good selection of drinks, and the fish is super fresh. They also have a pretty good deal on lunch too with 3 baked rolls for only 22 bucks! The gal who seated us the last couple times is super sweet and very helpful. The sushi chefs were also very friendly and made conversation with us during our visit which made it feel all the more special.I just can't say enough good things about them, glad I have found something so much closer to home, literally a hop skip & a jump from my home. Nothing grinds my gears more than a menu full of photos of sushi rolls all drowning in shitty sauces. Sushi Boom does go a little sauce heavy on some of the rolls, but they have enough options that are either completely sauce free or very light on the sauciness, that I was able to look past it and avoid em. The selection and quality is better than any average OC sushi restaurant, and I thought some of the rolls were delightfully creative. Also, any establishment that places so much attention to detail on their garnish is good in my book. My thinking is if they're willing to put the extra bit of effort to make the stuff guests aren't really supposed to eat look so pretty, then the edible stuff must be amazing. I mean, they cookie-cut their radish garnishes into little hearts and flowers, it's adorable! This care and quality shines thru all of their food I've tried, as everything is presented beautifully with good flavors to match. The ceviche roll is my favorite, and while it tastes nothing like real life ceviche, it's still a total winner. The roll is stuffed with fake crab and shrimp tempura, wrapped in sliced avocado, topped with a few chunks of lightly marinated tuna, and sprinkled with a light, sweet and tangy marinated mixture of chopped tomatoes, cilantro and minced red onion. The fish tasted fresh and remained raw, not cooked with citrus like latin american ceviches. The shrimp tempura and fake crab added a little more sweetness and slight crunch. The mango roll was slightly less stellar and it was because of the sauce. This one was stuffed with minced spicy and asparagus and wrapped with sweet mango and creamy avocado. Next time I'd order without the overly sweet yellow sauce, even though it wasn't used excessively, the sweetness of the ripe mango was enough without extra liquid sugar poured on top. One thing to note, I think the rice is seasoned perfectly here. It's not so in your face with the sweetness and vinegar, nice, light and delish. They applied a bunch of happy hour prices to our bill even though we ordered just after 9pm, so that was a nice little touch. Pleasantly surprised with this place! read more

As the exterior is dark and the door is on a side instead of on Chapman, it's hard to tell if it's open. Great expectations can lead to a few disappointments. I came here expecting quite a bit given the current reviews but wasn't really wowed. While the service was great and worthy of 5 stars (our server was polite and attentive), the sad truth is, I wouldn't give this place more than 3 stars for the food. The small sashimi comes with 9 pieces (three salmon, three white fish and three tuna). I would say skip it since the only good fish on that plate was the salmon. It's not that the fish tasted awful, it just wasn't the freshest. I don't recall the names of the other two rolls (I guess that goes to show how impressionable they were). If I could give no stars I would. Horrible experience trying to order party platters. I had called weeks before my event to make sure they could provide what I needed and wanted to see how much of a notice they needed for my order. I ended up ordering several days before my event and was on the phone with someone who didn't seem to know how things worked and kept putting me on hold to ask the manager questions. After a long and painful call I had put in my order for Saturday @1:30. I was given the total and was advised that I could pay upon pick up. I confirmed multiple times of the day and time I would be picking it up and she answered back yes it would be ready Saturday @1:30. Day of my event I decided to call them at noon to confirm that my order would be ready on time and they said they had no record of my order and actually accused me of lying about having an order previously placed. I told him I was given a total for the platters and could even send screenshots of when I called. I asked if I could still get my order for 1:30 and they said it was not possible and they maybe could have it by 2 or 2:30. No discount was offered for the inconvenience and said once he talked to his employees and if I was being honest that they had mistakenly not put the order in then they may he would be able to do something. They were not apologetic at all and I ended up cancelling the re-order because I was treated terribly and didn't want to give them my business.
