really solid japanese food in a pretty normal looking strip mall, i was pleasantly surprised! from the appetizers, the karaage was very well seasoned and fried and calamari tempura was okay. the rolls were all very good! on the menu, they are categorized into fresh, tempura, and baked rolls. the cucumber roll (f3) was loaded with sashimi and probably my favorite! the elvis roll (f14) was super spicy to me but still good quality! the double double (t9) and sakuraya special (t18) tasted pretty similar with both being california and shrimp tempura inside. very good quality all around! lastly, the scallop volcano roll (b7) had lots of scallop and was really unique. service was standard, a little lacking at some times like not filling up water frequently. but not a huge dealbreaker. overall, i'd recommend sakuraya and come back to try other dishes! read more

This place is amazing and has delicious food + and awesome experience ‼‼ They serve sushi the way that I expect it to taste with authentic sushi chefs and great quality when I go to other sushi places, I am always disappointed because they are not as tasty as the food at Sakuraya. I want to like this place because the sushi does seem pretty fresh but the ambience is awful. It's always SO LOUD playing the most awful music while the TVs are always blaring. Between the TVs and the music, the place doesn't feels lower scale. They don't do the warm towels or anything. Just feels like maybe they are catering to a white person crowd who doesn't know better. Even the couple next to me were debating whether they should ask the staff to turn it down. Why not just have it be a classy quiet Japanese joint? The main older lady who serves people has trouble understanding English but she seems nice enough. I would be careful if you're gluten free. They use this old reused GF soy sauce bottle and maybe refill it from somewhere else and it's hard to rely on. read more

I know there are better sushi options in the area, but came here out of convenience because my family and I were at Irvine Regional Park and this was the closest place from it It's located in the same plaza as Tru Bru Coffee. The food was good, although not great. However, this may be due to not taking advantage of the full menu. Mainly ordered off lunch specials, which were a pretty good deal. Sashimi lunch special was good, although temperature was a bit too cold for my liking. I don't know if this place uses lower quality fish for lunch specials since the price is pretty good. Jumbo scallop (hotate) sushi, which I ordered off the regular menu, was at the right temperature, and was really good. My wife's ramen (also from lunch special) had good flavor, but did taste a bit like instant ramen. CA roll, avocado/cucumber roll, and spicy tuna roll were all decent, although fairly standard. It was mediocre. I ordered a dinner combo. It comes with miso soup, salad, and 2 items. The miso soup had very little tofu and the pieces were very tiny. I ordered it with salmon teriyaki and bolgolgi. The salmon was very dry. The bolgolgi was not what I was expecting, it was similar to the beef you would get at yoshinoya. Another person in my party got chicken teriyaki and didn't eat it. I tried it and it was dry and flavorless with teriyaki just poured over the top. read more

This is one of my favorite places to get sushi, but I live 3000 miles away from it. I make sure to get it every single time I visit my Aunt in California - it's mandatory! Giant portions of quality fish, creative rolls, and wonderful friendly staff slinging complementary salad and soup with most meals. My wife and I hosted a graduation celebration dinner for my son and 16 of his friends. We were initially concerned whether the restaurant would be able to handle that many people. However, the service was excellent, and the food came out quickly. Sakuraya was very accommodating, allowing us to decorate with a banner and balloons. We decided to stay with the standard menu but allow for ordering separately from the sushi menu if desired. This turned out to work well, for such a large group. 3.5/5 stars Came here on a Thursday night for dinner. No wait and plenty of parking. The inside of the restaurant was cozy, and the wait staff was pretty attentive. We ordered the salmon belly sushi ($7.50 for 2 pieces), the snapper sushi ($5.50 for 2 pieces), the super albacore roll ($15.95), chapman roll ($14.95), and the Elvis roll ($15.95). They gave us each a complimentary salad and miso soup so that was nice. The salmon belly and snapper sushi were solid. The rice to fish proportion was heavy on the rice side. The rice was also not fresh and was on the hard side. The rolls here are on steroids! Definitely some of the largest rolls I've ever seen, so two rolls would have been enough for the two of us. My bf ate most of the super albacore roll since I don't like cream cheese, so I can't comment on this one. The chapman roll had deep fried soft shell crab, so this one was quite tasty, but definitely heavy. There was a generous amount of avocado on top, which I liked. The Elvis roll was basically a large clump of imitation crab with seared albacore on top. I missed the chili pepper sign on the menu, so I was a little surprised by the spicy kick. The albacore was a large, generous piece. Overall, I wouldn't say this place has the highest quality sushi, but for the price and size, it's quite decent! read more
