This place is horrible. The main manager or sushi chef is name is Douglas and if you sit at the sushi bar he makes fun of his other customers and talks smack on them. Not very professional. He is constantly smoking cigarettes and then comes in and doesn't wash his hands. He is always at every girls table trying to hit on them and is a horrible sushi bar owners. Found Sushi District on Yelp and thought I'd give it try. Started with Hamachi Kama (yellow tail collar) which was cooked perfectly. We order this at every sushi place that offers it and most of the time it is over cooked and dry. But sushi district did it right. Moist, glistening and seasoned well. We also had the garlic edamame which was also very good. If you're a garlic lover like us, it's a must. Then we ordered the blue crab roll in soy paper. The roll was delicious. Didn't really care for the sesame sauce it came with but it was so nice to have a real crab option instead of always the same ol "krab" that rolls usually come with. The tuna "nachos" were good. My friend enjoyed them more than I did. Tuna and jalapeño on fried wonton chips. Lastly, we had some regular sushi pieces. Yellow tail, salmon and octopus. Had really high expectations for Sushi District upon reading the reviews. But was very disappointed by the sushi. I have been on the a sushi craze lately, trying out sushi from various restaurants in the area and the sushi here is probably the worst of the bunch. There's a lot of great things about this place but the sushi didn't impress. It's a no for me dog :( Okay lemme start by saying what this place is doing right. The rolls and appetizers were excellent! I feel if I came here for those I would give this place a full mark. But there's sushi in the name of this restaurant and their sushi was really whack man...or woman... or nonbinary... PERSON OKAY! The rolls were excellent and the portion was a lot! So that's good. The appetizer I had was the fried oysters, which was delicious. The only thing is the fish here isn't on par to what I normally eat. So rolls that has raw fish in it or on it, wasn't that great. Now... Onto the sushi. This place has the poorest quality sushi I have ever ate in my life. I can go to some cheap sushi spot for $2 sushi that will obliterate these sushi to smithereens.The quality was poor, the knife skill is also poor. I have some pictures of the sushi and you CAN NOT lie to me and say that these sushi are one of the most beautiful sushi you have ever laid eyes on. I didn't even wanna snap these :( The knife skill of whoever made my sushi that night was very sad. Cuts everywhere in order to cut sinews from the thick and clumsy cut of tuna. Salmon quality looks sickening. Like the salmon had the some AIDS or something. Why it look like that tho??? Amaebi! My favorite! Why was it flipped upside down? Trynna look like Shamu waving at the crowds or something. The staff here are nice. Our server noticed that my friend was having trouble chewing the tuna. I woulda just ignored it, but they remade another batch for us. It was still poor quality but it's the thought that counts??? Their water is good tho... When I have to say their water is good it means I'm trying to kinda hide the fact that the review was savage. I don't want to give bad reviews, but it's important for business to learn what's up... If I had sushi only then this place would have got 0 star review. But, the staff, rolls and appetizers gave them 2 stars. From my experience, this place is a hard recommendation for me. I kept forgetting to do a review on this place. But this is my go-to sushi spot, it's right around the corner from me and all the boys there work hard, they are all nice. My favorite roll is double blood roll because I like spicy stuff but all the rolls are really good including the cucumber special roll (no rice)! Only complaint is I wish they had more authentic Japchae (this was a disappointment)... I've been getting food from here since my boyfriend moved to California last summer but you can't go wrong with any rolls here! I will keep coming back for rolls!! If I had to describe my experience here in one word it would be: disappointing. We came here frequently as this used to be one of our favorite restaurants. But this experience was where we decided we're never coming back. One sushi chef at the bar and all the chefs cooking in the back kitchen were WEARING NO MASKS while making everyone's food. I understand how difficult it can be to be wearing a mask for 8 hours at work because I do it but to be serving food and not even attempt to where one is appalling. How inconsiderate do you have to be to not care about the people your serving? Aside from this, we decided to try different rolls from what we normally order and the rolls we got were not good. Wow! It doesn't get better than this. We had three rolls. The first was yellow tail. I knew right away that the sushi is quality grade. Also had the baked Spicy Tropical roll. It was so incredibly delish. The final was a Shrimp Tempura roll which my friend really liked. A shout out to the service which was wonderful. I got the Choose Any 3 combo for dinner. The soup was less flavorful than other sushi spots i frequent and the ginger salad dressing was fine. I liked the shrimp tempura roll a lot, but the spicy tuna roll was not the greatest. It WAS spicy, so props to them for that; I just didn't enjoy the overall flavor. The gyoza was good. Overall, the whole meal felt pretty lackluster and did not leave me wanting to try here again. If you are into the baked rolls like seared salmon and stuff then the baked salmon is REALLY good from here! It EVEN became my standard for every other baked salmon roll I ever had. I just remembered an explosion of flavors!! Like the salmon had a nice seared flavor to it and on top of that, a good proportion of toppings and sauces to it! The second roll I had from here was the AVE of Star roll. The inside is: crabmeat, cucumber, and shrimp tempura. The outside is: salmon, tuna, and avocado. The top is: eel sauce, spicy mayo, smelt egg (masago?), and green onions!! I really liked the combination of fried shrimp tempura with the fresh fish! Best of both worlds! I don't know about you, but I always like dipping my sushi in ponzu sauce better than soy sauce. Just ask for some on the side! You can just tell when you're getting high quality food, especially when it comes to sushi. As usual, I forgot to take photos because it all snowed and looked so yummy. The Bento Box included rice, teriyaki chicken, tempura, and a small ginger salad. I also ordered a side of simple cucumber and avocado rolls and WOW! Likely the worst chirashi I ever had, or #2 as the worst I ever had (just leaving a benefit of doubt that they may have been a worst one but honestly I can't think of it right now...). For about $24 you get a fairly large size chirashi bowl, it's #1 in term of the amount of rice that I ever seen in a chirashi. However, the rice is cold and hard instead of warm and fluffy. The fish slices were large and thin, but they were simply just defrosted with lot of water still attached to them and all flavorless except one of one type of fish in my bowl. The orange fish roe that it came with also had a weird taste so I didn't eat much of it. The fish quality is what I would expect from cheap AYCE or those $1.50 per plate rotating sushi places. How did they get such high rating?? Friends and family reviews? Or did I come on a bad day when they have only just-defrosted-fish?? I wanted to give a 2 stars but couldn't find any good reason except the rice quantity being on the large side. I'm usually not drawn to sushi. It's not that I don't like it but I don't find the establishments to be very appealing. But when I saw that this place had only been open for a few days, and I had had enough of Italian, burgers, and Mexican food I thought "why not". I rolled in at about 7:30PM and found a place at the bar where I ordered a Sapporo beer and asked for the wifi password. The waitress was kind and was sweet. She was quick to answer any questions and was quick to keep my glass full. I asked the chef which would be the most spicy roll and he just told me that he would make it just the way I like it. I agreed and within a few minutes he had whipped up a roll that was very tasty but not the spiciest roll I've had. So I looked again and found that in a previous post, someone had ordered the Double Blood Roll. So I copied the order. It was amazing. If you don't like spicy food don't try it, but I'll tell you something.... it was an explosion in my mouth. The price of the 2 rolls and two Sapporo beers was 29.95. Try to beat that in Costa Mesa. But it wasn't the cost that will bring me back to this hole-in-the-wall it will be the service and amazingly fresh fish in the sushi. Five stars all the way. read more

This place is alright, nothing to big nor to small. Service wasn't the best, I expected a bit more from the ratings. My servers name "SEONG" was not in the best mood. No water was offered, I felt as if I was being judged the longer I took as this was my first time. Sushi district carries a lot of menu items that sound good! Just the dine in experience can definitely find a way to improve, I couldn't finish my food since I felt uncomfortable and not welcomed. I feel like it's the waiters job to create the experience and make sure that all their guest are happy and satisfied. They spoke another language and started staring at me, I can tell they were definitely talking about me. Funny thing is that one of chefs was using his phone behind the bar and remained prepping the food, health inspection definitely would make a comment and ask the chef to please wash his hands. Our phones carry a bunch of germs and having it near fish isn't smart nor good. I spent about $60 unfortunately. I would recommend trying their sashimi red fin tuna on Tuesdays as it's considered fresh, I tasted it, tasted alright, it wasn't to appealing. Not to sure why this place has 4.5 stars but I'm sure they built their way up overtime, I manage a business so I'm aware how everything should be and how guest should be treated. read more

I was highly impressed with this place. A friend and I were getting sushi on a Friday night and didn't want to go to far from home so 17th street it was. We were immediately greeted when we walked in and seated. The restaurant was clean and welcoming. Their menu is pretty big and has pretty much everything I could possibly want from a sushi restaurant. We shared a garlic edamame appetizer(pretty good but not the best I've had), a sushi roll (I forget what it was called but pictures provided) and a bento box. My favorites included their sesame chicken, our roll was really good, and the Miso soup was bomb! Let me just say I don't usually like Miso soup but this soup was different. Sushi here is too spicy. I couldn't finish our meals because of the spice factor. Overall I thought the sushi quality was good! I ordered the spicy albacore which was too spicy and the Jessica Alba Roll which was too spicy. MUST TRY the Yellowtail jalapeño Salsa sushi. It was freaking out of control amazing.
