This used to be an epic spot for a quick lunch or dinner, with reasonable prices and excellent quality fish and service! (We would have come here much more often, but there was always a wait and that can be tough with hungry kids/hubby). After realizing it had been a minute, we decided to stop back by for an "early" lunch...we arrived at 11:57 and the whole staff was eating lunch and told us they were closed until noon....kind of different, seeing as it was almost noon and the table of 10 people looked like lunch had just started, but we sat outside and waited. They moved the sign that was blocking the door a few mins after 12, but didn't say a word about if that meant they were open? ‍ we took a chance and walked in and grabbed a table...but it was clear they were not ready for customers at all. The restaurant felt and smelled like it was in need of cleaning, but I just thought maybe we were sitting at an odd table with a weird dirty smell....Service was slow, but it was empty so we hung in there. We both ordered the lunch special (which was new to us, and advertised in a stand on the table with details and pics of the options)...it seamed like a fair deal, but the quality was subpar. The salad was good, the rest was pretty bad! The miso was terrible and the sushi was just not good. Escolar tasted fishy (not a safe fish to serve anyway, we discovered later, and illegal for consumption in Japan, Italy, and several other countries due to its potential toxicity and gastrointestinal disturbances). The Albacore was stiff and fishy, with a heavy crusting of seasoned salt (?!), the tuna did not look like any tuna I had ever seen and had an odd/off taste, and the salmon was roughly cut, but ok. On to the rolls...the hot night roll was ok, about a 5/10. The Alaska roll was covered in mustard sauce, literally swimming in it. I had to ask what it was because it was just not good and I couldn't eat it, so it was basically wasted. When I asked, and then showed the server the picture on the table of a very clean, sauce free "Alaska roll" she said, "yeah- it's in the description on the full menu- that picture is a little misleading". No offer to rectify, just asked if I wanted to add anything else to the order since I wasn't going to eat that roll. ‍ As she walked away, my husband couldn't help but chuckle at how horrible this place is now....he looked at me and said "86'd?" And I agreed emphatically....it is sadly "off the list" of places we will dine again. read more

I can't say enough good things about Sushi District. We have been here twice so far and it is officially our new favorite sushi place in Orange County. Heck, California! We stopped in last night around closing time (we kind of forgot how late it was) and the staff was in the process of cleaning up. We completely understood it was our error and were prepared to leave and grab dinner somewhere else instead. The sushi chef recognized us from our previous visit and offered to make our order to go. We were ECSTATIC! It had been a rough few days and his simple gesture of kindness meant more to me than I think he realized (Thank you!). We ordered the same exact rolls we ordered the first time: Spicy Salmon Roll, Hot Night Roll, and Double Blood Roll. The fish here is fresh, the seasoning is on point, and the level of heat is perfect. I highly recommend any of these, as well as the Garlic Edamame and Baked Green Mussels. I think anything you order is going to be delicious. We haven't been disappointed and are big fans of this restaurant. Between the quality of the fish, atmosphere, and the kind employees, Sushi District is at the top of our list whenever we're craving sushi! read more

This place was in a little strip mall type of area. The inside was pretty tiny. Do not let the interior fool you. This place had such good sushi! Their spicy garlic edamame was not crazy spicy and tasty! I ordered the Philly tempura roll and it was a good size roll. I blame the waiters for getting me sake-satisfied that I completely signed my bill and forgot to tip (let me emphasize that I have NEVER enjoyed myself so much that I forgot to do something like that!!) but because it was so amazing I'm going to stop by tomorrow or this weekend and make sure to give them their tip in person. I live in the area yet have somehow overlooked this gem. I walked in this afternoon and was greeted at the door and immediately seated at the bar and given a tray with pickled cucumber, beets, ginger and wasabi. A moment later an ice water with lemon was served in a stainless steel glass and I was given a menu. The menu is quite extravagant but since this was my first visit, I ordered a couple of simple items: a bento box with teriyaki chicken, a spicy tuna rainbow roll and a small Asahi. My Asahi was brought out immediately and my Rainbow roll and Bento box soon after. Everything was excellent and I am looking forward to going again with my wife and friends. read more

im trying to figure out why every sushi place in costa mesa is closed at 2pm except here. they have an overwhelming menu filled with exotic different rolls and appetizers. i ended up getting 3 rolls for about $37. the kim jung roll is great deep fried lobster with spicy tuna. the different exotic sauces are great!! food was fast fresh and delicious!! tiny parking lot with minimal parking. ill be back. come check it out. read more

This place is pretty great for not looking like a traditional sushi spot. I appreciate the fast service and the good happy hour. It's super tiny but the sushi is fresh and really good. The only downside is the parking. It's a nightmare with this plaza. I would suggest going on an off hour or at night. Parking isn't great (located in a small plaza with a bunch of stores/eateries), but I do enjoy my experience here every time I come. Price is fair for the quality of the food. Garlic edamame is so good!! The rolls had a little too much sauce but it was all fresh and yummy.

Came in with some co-workers for lunch and had a good experience. The place is a little small but due to what is going on, it was easy to come in and receive service. The appetizers were good but the sushi was a little inconsistent. Some tasted much more fresh than other rolls. In all there was 3 of us and we ordered 2 apps and 4 rolls and it was plenty enough. I'm an out of towner looking at a place to get my daily sushi fix and I come across this place. I gotta say... they are very generous in the portions of fish. VERY friendly! And well priced... definitely not gonna break da bank! I ordered the sweet shrimp and bento box dinner. I went here on Valentines day for dinner and even with it being a holiday the service and food was excellent! I'm not a huge fan of sushi I had found this place on a whim since my friends were craving it and we all couldn't stop talking about how delicious everything was. They were so kind to have gifted us a box of chocolates at the end of our meal you can tell that they truly care about their customers. I hate to have to leave this review but feel the need to. My friend and I came for happy hour. There was only 1 server who was clearly busy taking online orders, etc. We had to flag him down to order and saw our sushi sitting on the counter. We were going to grab it ourselves but the chef literally came out and was about to walk it to us, even he noting that it was taking the server too long to bring it to us. The waiter never came and checked on us one time during our meal. After getting our checks, we discovered he overcharged us. We tried to get his attention but saw he was talking to a server about something on his cell phone and asked us to wait a minute. Absolutely unacceptable. A little hole in the wall sushi place. I was wonderfully surprised by how tasty the sushi was. We got mixed tempura that had a dipping sauce which had a hint of ginger. It was different and refreshing. The shrimp tempura roll was my favorite. We also go some other regular rolls. Even during covid they had indoor dining ( but limited).
