This place used to be good. Excellent interior - very high design and comfort. 3 server team actions that were questionable and didn't make this dining team feel well cared for: 1) hostess was told one of us wanted sushi and one wanted to order off menu. No menu was offered and no explanation of where menu might be found. Bad training and or bad accountability. 2) server was asked if they had non-caffeine tea and a very pleasant hipster dude said, "Yes!" But when pressed for what kind? He answered, "Green tea." He was not trained in what green tea is. 3) When server took order he "didn't know" if we could order 'stir fried vegetables' without any meat or tofu. He took our orders and ran off, not entering either it seemed for 5 minutes wandering around asking if a Japanese Restaurant with several types of stir fried vegetables on the menu could make 'just stir fried vegetables. He WASNT trained! What's worse, I couldn't directly order from Sushi man in front of me - he had to enter each request in POS system first! If you can't trust your sushi man, train them better, or show up more, but breaking the contact between me at sushi bar and the sushi man breaks 1000 years of experience so some computer tracking system can intervene. read more

Daughter's 15th birthday yesterday - she got to choose family dinner location so we made a reservation and ended up at Sushi Garden. It was not a good experience. The only two redeemers about our experience were the food and our waitress. HOSTESS I'm starting to wonder if hostesses are specially trained in making people feel horrible. As a former restaurant hostess, I can't remember that being the case back then but times change so who knows. All I know is that we chose to spend money at your restaurant - it would be awesome if we could be treated like guests and not a burden. We were a little early for our reservation but were kept waiting about 15 minutes beyond our reservation time. I know it's stressful. I do. But your main job is customer service. You are the face of the restaurant. If you don't want me there, I'll assume the restaurant doesn't either. The half hour wait with an autistic 5-year old was NOT fun. There's no seating while you wait, it's loud and crowded. He was horribly overwhelmed and started acting out as a result. The hostess just ignored us. Then we were told we couldn't be seated until our entire party arrived. {Now this part REALLY confuses me because wouldn't it be more effective to seat us and have us start buying food and drink than leave the table empty????} Overall, they were just rude. Again, why am I spending my money here? FOOD Again, the food was good. I've had better gyoza. But the chicken fried rice and teriyaki chicken are very good. For a children's plate of steak it's $8, which seems a little high for a children's meal. Especially for the small amount of food given. My son was still hungry when the meal was over. PRICE This place just seems unnecessarily expensive. The food is okay. Not great. SERVICE Our waitress was very nice. It took a while for our food to come out and none of it came at the same time so a few of us received our food while others waited. That can be awkward. OVERALL I left unhappy that I paid about $70 for three of us to eat (and none of us got the all-you-can-eat sushi) at a place that obviously doesn't value my business. They do rotate the food on the buffet pretty good (so the food always appears fresh), I would not eat there that often because a lot of the food is fried and most of the rolls are just so so. I'm unfortunately going to have to downgrade my 5-stars to 3-stars. I've been going to Sushi Garden (including the old location) for around 7 years and recently noticed a change in the quality of their sushi. A family member was in town and I was excited to have them eat at a great sushi place and share my love of Sushi Garden with them. Unfortunately, a lot of the nigri was sub par and the rolls had more cream cheese and other fillers in them then they did fish. We couldn't even eat the Albacore because it had a weird taste. The service was still good even though we had a large party and I still love the new look of this location. Maybe I've become spoiled by the fresh sushi at Sushi Cortaro as of late and Sushi Garden has always been like this, or the quality of their sushi has gone down. This place is great, especially since they remodeled it a couple years ago. The best time to go is during happy hour - really reasonable (half price) sushi rolls and cheap drinks. Their drink menu is pretty nice too - they have a variety of specialty house drinks including a sake-fishbowl (we got one of those last time). It does tend to get busy Thursday-Saturday nights, but it is a big restaurant including an outdoor porch so the wait is usually not too bad, even with 6+ people. They take reservations so you may want to call ahead if you have a large group. read more

I came to Sushi Garden with a bit of trepidation tonight as memories of a past bad experience at the old location on Alvernon came to mind but I was pleasantly surprised. I felt welcomed and that the staff was interested in giving good service. I've always loved the center at Broadway/Country Club and used to enjoy this particular building when it housed Elle. Sushi Garden was bustling and the outdoor seating was cool and inviting with plenty of misters going. The indoor decor was really nice, attractive and gave the place a cool vibe. I was part of a party of nine plus a toddler and our orders were taken very quickly after being seated and given an appropriate amount of time to review the menu. Plenty of food was ordered and everyone seemed pleased with the menu items. My selection included squid salad, tuna tataki and a burrito roll. The salad and tuna were good, not spectacular but good. I was very disappointed in the burrito roll. Spicy tuna, shrimp tempura and cream cheese rolled in a VERY sloppy rice roll with diced avocado on top. Any kind of spice in the jalapeno sauce was really non-existent. I was really hoping for a great burst of flavor but this roll left a lot to be desired. And honestly, there's nothing worse than a sloppily rolled sushi roll that falls apart all over your plate. Overall, the experience here tonight was good I just think there's better sushi to be had in Tucson. One little tip for Sushi Garden....providing your patrons with complimentary edamame and miso soup would make a huge difference in the overall impression and rating of your restaurant. Just visited Sushi Garden for happy hour the other day and I was very impressed with the hip ambiance and large menu. The rolls were good quality and everyone I was with really enjoyed their food, especially their inventive rolls. I thought some of the appetizer portions were pretty small, edamame in particular, but the rolls were definitely adequate. I love a happy hour where you can fill up on what you would normally order just at discounted prices. We felt hounded by the waitress at times. We were waiting for someone and she was over every two minutes asking if we were ready. While I appreciate her eagerness, it was a bit daunting. read more

While a lot of my friends have mixed views of Sushi Garden, I've always had great luck having very good food at Sushi Garden. Their sushi rolls and sashimis are one of the best in Tucson, and I eat there at least once every 2 weeks. I love Sushi Garden's happy hour! A warm saki, a plate of variety rolls, plus games on TV--that's what heaven on earth looks like to me! You probably should not go to Sushi Garden expecting a life-changing culinary experience. I think Sushi Garden is good for day to day consumption. It's friendly to the wallet, and the sushis there are comfort food to me. I usually would try all the types of sushi available especially the nigiri roles. Overall I would say the sushi was pretty good and consistent for being in the desert and American southwest. Being a local San Diegan myself I personally think sushi is much fresher closer to the coast, but all and all this place is great for Tucson. read more

We were a party of 4. 2 of us got our food, and then 30 minutes later the other two finally received our 3 sushi rolls. We understand if they are backed up, but maybe a heads up? The server hardly paid any attention and wasn't apologetic in any way. After, we asked if we could perhaps get something taken off the bill, or if there was anything they could do. Pros: Five stars for the food. But... Cons: Con 1-go before 9 because they close at 11 on Saturdays and anything after 9 the waiters are tired, slow, moody and don't appear to be wanting to be there. Some waiters know us and we request to be seated with them. Con 2- the cleaning Rag/towel they use to clean smells bad. The need to use bleach or something that smells pleasant. It looks like the reuse it in the same water over and over again. If I could give it lower stars I would. Everything was fine, up until we ordered. When we got our food, an item was incorrect, and instead of getting what we actually ordered, the mistake was blamed on us. I thought okay, maybe it was on us. So we ordered the item we originally wanted. Finally the check comes, and there is two extra items that we never ordered on the ticket. Instead of having a conversation about it, both the manager and server said we did order them and that we'd pay. Refusing to listen to anything I had to say. Im in Tucson from out of town visiting on business. I called in to see who they use for deliveries and I was told it was door dash. The young lady walked me through how to place an order online through Sushi Gardens website. I get through making my order and try to check out. The checkout button is grey and won't let me finish checking out so I call in to see if they can help me. After speaking to a few people a gentleman gets on the phone and tells me the owner turned off the online ordering because they are to busy for deliveries. But I can place an order with them and pick it up myself... What is the difference between me placing the order on your website and having door dash pick it up to deliver to me and me placing the order and picking it up myself! Bad form... read more

For several years my family and I have went to Sushi Garden. The last two visits have helped me make the decision to go somewhere else. The food is always good, but the service is horrible. A waitress slammed her hand on the table because my wife was talking to my daughter and she did not hear the waitress ask if she wanted to order. The most recent visit to the Foothills location the waitress made my family feel uncomfortable the entire time by going over all their rules and regulations about how to dine there. Really? I understand you will nickel and dime everyone, but please let me eat in peace! Is this prison or a restaurant? If I work all week and drive to your location, I'm looking forward to spending $100.00 plus dollars and have a good time without being harrassed or having someone slam their hand on the table. If you're willing to lower your expectations for all-you-can-eat sushi, and you plan on eating a lot of sushi, this is a good deal. I feel like some of the flavor is lost when it's mass-produced: the fish is not selected as carefully, nor presented with as much care. Plus, there's the rules of all-you-can-eat sushi: if you just eat the fish and veggies and leave the rice, they charge you extra. And this sushi all just has a *little* more rice and a *little* less fish. But, it's not bad. Just middlin'. I have to commend the service for our large party. The servers were totally on the ball taking orders; the only annoying thing about the service was that they didn't bring wasabi and ginger until we asked for it, after the sushi came out. The food came out really quickly. And there was lots of it. Some items we enjoyed more than others. Everyone liked the Vegas roll, and the chicken skewers. The scallops weren't bad. The fried rolls were all better than the sashimi. The crab puff were WEAK. Mostly just wrapper. The spicy rolls had the right amount of spice, though. There was some kind of fried chicken thing that was painfully dry, and the beef dumplings were definitely not beef, because beef is not white. The eel tasted fine but looked weird. Not sure I'd choose to eat here again. We have better sushi options nearby, and, honestly, normally I'd eat maybe 2 rolls and 1 nigiri, which would cost about the same or less than the all-you-can-eat option, without making me feel compelled to overeat. Ok I have eaten here twice, and I don't get what all the bad reviews are about. I just moved here from Michigan, and trust me in Mi., good sushi is hard to find. If I wanted good sushi, I had to plan visiting "good" places when I was in Chicago, or Toronto. Then I moved here, and Sushi Garden was the first sushi place I tried. I will be honest I had low expectations (really low), I figured it was just another theme restaurant, that boasted about asain food, but was really american. But boy was I wrong! The first time I went with a large party of people, and the person in charge of the event ordered for the table. I figured I would try a peice or two, not like it and grab a bite on the way home. Well.... lets just say that isn't how it went down. I tried one of each type she ordered (two of a couple that were really good), and I loved it! This was the best sushi I have had in a long time, they were rolled properly (they didn't just fall apart), the fish was prepared properly (blanched so it didn't just taste like raw fish), and they used good nori! The nori is usually my biggest complaint in cheap sushi, cheap nori is thick, and has a seaweed taste. Yes I know it's seaweed, but cheap nori overpowers everything else, and makes sushi hard to eat for me. Sushi Garden uses paper thin nori, and it doesn't fight the taste of the other ingredents. On my second visit I noticed one of the complaints of other yelpers, the service needs a bit of work. Yes the servers are very nice, but there is like a half dozen that will service your table. Also the second time I went with a smaller group, just me, my sister in law, and my nephew. I would have given Sushi Garden 5 stars if it wasn't for the service errors. First they brought my sister in law the wrong drink, then they brought out our food, all at diffrent times. Hers came first, then mine, and lastly my poor nephew was waiting for his for almost 20 minuets after ours came. Thats not cool. Either you bring all the food at once, or you bring the child's first. It was not cool that my nephew had to wait, and he was the most hungry out of all of us. read more

I've been going to this location multiple times within the past year and I am always consistently delighted with not only the food, but by the incredibly friendly service accompanying every visit. What I have always loved about Sushi Garden is their unique lunch buffet. Where else in town can you get all-you-can-eat teriyaki salmon, seaweed salad, tempura, and various maki rolls? When I am really hungry for salmon and seaweed salad, I load up here. I'm usually not too crazy about Asian buffets, but because of how busy Sushi Garden gets, the food revolves fast. Usually the salmon is not sitting in the heaters very long before I eat it. The restaurant is centrally located in a nice area of town with plenty of parking in back. Be careful, there are busy times and you may experience a short wait. I do not come here for their regular menu items and sushi because there are better options in town. read more

I continue to be underwhelmed by this place and and am keen to agree with my fellow reviewers. We went for the first time in a while for a going-away dinner for a friend and remembered very quickly why our patronage had lapsed. The food quality is acceptable, but our service was increasingly not so. We went as a party of six. Four members received their food, ate their food, and finished before my fiance and I stopped somebody to figure out what the heck was going on. Notably, nobody had stopped by the table to check on us during that time. Our food was chilling on the counter waiting to be taken to us the entire time. I know this because when i stopped a random server, I saw him go back through the kitchen, look at the food that was sitting there, and pick it up to bring to us. Not sure how this would be overseen by any of the waitstaff or kitchen staff since it is right in front of them. In a popular establishment, it's really unacceptable. Sushi Garden puts out strong advertisements for their lunch buffet and I always overlooked it for one reason or another. Well, for some reason an ad popped up on one of my feeds and the picture of the food options just could not be passed by. According to the picture, Sushi Garden's lunch buffet included a plethora of sushi options from traditional raw sushi to vegetarian rolls. They also showed a small image of tempura and chicken katsu but it looked more like an after thought and less like a main course. So you can imagine my excitement when I finally conceded and encouraged my husband to give it a try. Flash forward to today and we walk in to a restaurant that is averagely busy and a little warm. We are seated and each of us get up to get food. When I approach the buffet there are two sides, one held salad and the accoutrements and the other held hot entrees to include what we could only assume was fish (it was unlabeled), massive tempura battered vegetables, beef and vegetables (which was empty), orange chicken (which had one scoop left and was dried out), salmon, crab puffs, fried rice and yokisoba noodles. I am sure you are asking yourself the same question I was, "what about the sushi?" Well that, fellow yelpers, was on an end cap of one of the buffet sides with four plates of either salmon skin sushi, vegetarian sushi, spicy crab and shrimp tempura roll....pretty anticlimactic huh? The options were anything but impressive. What Sushi Garden promised vs. what was actually provided are two ends of the 'satisfaction spectrum.' Arrived on time of our reservation. Was taken to a LARGE round table with seating for 6 easily. It was just the 2 of us. The hostess removed dirty glasses and beer bottles from the table without even wiping the table off!! After a short wait we requested the table be wiped off. To the point where she was actually talking VERY loudly and aggressively back to me , attracting the attention of nearby patrons. My food arrived before my wife's and one roll (Sunshine roll) actually arrived 40 minutes after we ordered!!! After asking for the 2nd time where it was and that we wanted to just cancel it( as our dinner was all eaten), it arrived instantly!!? We were told that it was because the different food was made in different kitchens???!! Unacceptable!! The food was great! ...once it arrived.I had a gift card for SG from Xmas and will probably not be returning to Sushi Garden. I typically go to Shogun Sushi (River and Oracle). I get GREAT service there and they have "happy hour" prices most of the time and if you like Sashimi, they have the largest pieces in town that I have found!! One of the better sushi places in all of Arizona. Fish is fresh. Would recommend the sashimi. Rolls are good too. I have tried the vegas. I believe they have a buffet on the weekends. All my friends have been raving about this place for months... Driving around Tucson you are constantly bombarded with their ads, billboards, on buses... So they've got to be making money, right!? Really impressed with kids bento box. But I am only giving 3 stars because... I'm not a fan of their guidelines for all you can eat. Charging ppl for food left on their plate seems ridiculous!! But!!! I've worked in restaurants and I know ppl are awful and wasteful, so it's a way to not throw away the restaurants money but I just don't like that, seems dirty. Wow! I am so impressed by the new remodel! It feels like a whole new restaurant. Upon looking at the menu, however, I know it's still the same great price and good quality food. There was a wait when we went, and I have a feeling upon looking at other reviews that this may be the case a lot of nights. But, it's worth the wait if you're not starving. I'm usually never waiting for the food to come out very long after I've ordered it. Overall, this is still my favorite affordable sushi restaurant in Tucson. I'm pretty biased when it comes to sushi buffets. If you haven't heard yet, Davis, CA is like...the sushi buffet capital of the world. We literally have 5/6 sushi buffets in this tiny town. (Yes, it's crazy.) Lunch buffets are about ~$13.95 per person, and you can order what ever rolls you like. (Like the lion king!) My boyfriend heard from a friend that the place had an $8.95 sushi buffet, so we headed here for lunch one Friday afternoon. The place was only semi-full, and we were seated right away. After reading through the various menus they gave us, we figured out that $8.95 was just for the open buffet they had (which included SOME sushi, but the crap ones I guess), and that the actual sushi buffet was ~$20 per person. Thus, we opted to just stick to the $8.95 buffet, and it was...meh. A lot of the hot foods offered were fried (various tempura, fish, etc.) The sushi, like I said, was the crap sushi -- the cheap ones that don't taste good and have a lot of rice stuffed in it. They had some teriyaki salmon too, but again, it was the part of the fish that was unwanted by sushi chefs/cheap. I also got myself some miso soup -- I like that I was able to put however much tofu and green onions I wanted in my soup. However, I didn't like that the bowl I scooped my soup into was CRUSTY on the outside of one side. Ugh. That was pretty gross. Tried this place again after a miserable fail at trying to eat all you can eat sushi... It sounds so tempting but it takes good strategy to fully enjoy such deal. So this time around we decided to be smarter... I ordered a rainbow roll and sake (salmon nigiri) and loved it. Sake was delicious...the fish tasted fresh and fatty (though not melt in your mouth but still good---I mean...AZ ya know?) My man got the tootsie roll (not bad but too saucy) and a spanish roll (this one was interesting....idk..it was good but weird...I don't think I would be able to eat a whole roll of the intense flavor by myself...but a few pieces were yummy). I can't wait to go back for more sushi...I want sushi now...nom nom Server was great...super nice and helpful even if it was very busy...we went on a Friday night at 6pm and we didn't have to wait that long...but the place got pretty busy on our way out...
