Just got done eating here for the 1st time. The service was not that great. Actually we had to keep getting the attention of the staff, they don't cone to your table often. However, once you ask for something, they bring it out right away. I thought the sushi was good but shogun, sakura and ahh sushi is better. The real draw to this place is the all you can eat is $20 per person. You don't get the full menu with that but you do get a fairly good selection with a choice of 3 specialty rolls depending on the day. You have to eat it all though because you get charged full price for any leftovers. Overall the pros outweigh the cons. You get fairly good sushi for a very good price (even regular menu prices are some of the cheapest I've seen i.e. $5-$8). The service wasn't great but I've had worse. Bottom line is I would eat here again although for more money you can find a better experience. If you're looking for value, this is your place. read more

I'm a sushi enthusiast and this is my first visit to Sushi Gen. Being an Asian and having tried different sushi restaurants all I can say is that this restaurant doesn't fit my taste. Maybe for white western customers. The sushi roll pieces which were made, were too big full of rice wrapped in dry seaweed and hardly other ingredients. There is no doubt that the owner is trying to profit with just rice balls. The sushi rice itself is too dry and over sticky. The seaweed used were hard in texture and hard to be broken when chewed. Plus they even charge for tea. As for desert I had requested for tempura green tea ice cream which was HORRIBLE. There is no doubt they don't know how to make one. I listened to every bone head in town that sent me to Azuma and I hate to burst your albuquerque bubble but THAT is mediocre sushi, the rice isn't flavored and it's over priced. The place was very underwhelming when we walked up. We only waited a minute or two to be seated, given menus, and have our drink orders taken. Our drinks arrived promptly, but then it was at least 15 mins before we saw our server again. While we waited to place our food order, I had plenty of time to notice the drab dated decor, and the sad shape that most of it was in. The bamboo mats that are covering the walls and dividing the dining room from what appeared to be a dry storage area have broken pieces all over the place, and the fake plants were covered in dust. When our server finally came to take our order, I asked about the coupon for a free beer with the ayce sushi that I found here on yelp. The server gave me a weird look and said she'd be right back. 5 mins later, she returned and said that I can only have bud light in the bottle. I don't like bud light, but it was free, so I took it. We told the server that we needed 3 separate checks and placed our orders. The food took about 20 mins to arrive, which wasn't a big deal since we weren't in a hurry, but the restaurant really wasn't very busy, so we didn't understand why it took so long. The food was actually really good!! But the service was not very good at all... our server never came back to ask how everything was, she never asked to refill my water or if we wanted anything else to drink, or offered dessert... she never even came back to the table. First, the location. This restaurant is cleverly hidden away from San Mateo Boulevard, directly North of the Mitsubishi dealership. It's right across the street from the New Golden Corral triumphant offering to diabetes everything that's wrong with america in a box fat camp. My husband and I went to Sushi Gen for a late weekend lunch and ordered three rolls... which was a big mistake because they were huge! This was a pleasant surprise, since many of the sushi restaurants I have sampled in Albuquerque prepared rolls that were relatively small. I was also impressed by the freshness of the fish we were eating, very surprising for a place that some would call "a hole in the wall." There are two reasons why I didn't give Sushi Gen five stars: 1) The menu lacked a variety of specialty rolls. For those who just like to let fish the speak for itself this would be no issue; however, I prefer creativity in my sushi rolls. 2) The waitress was attentive (i.e. our glasses were always full) but she was short with us which I didn't care for. The "crunch roll" is cream cheese, unagi, and avacado, the whole thing fried in tempura. The girlfriend is fond of telling me that if it were a person, she'd leave me for it. If you pick up a copy of the Alibi - the free local paper - and find the coupon, you can get all of the rolls for half price if you pay cash. We usually walk away for a price only slightly higher than if you go with the all-you-can-eat, but with access to more menu items than are available on the separate all-you-can-eat menu. We went here for the AYCE sushi, which is not common in Albq surprisingly. It did not disappoint! The sushi was delicious & I loved that it was brought out on a huge sushi boat. There weren't any appetizers included in the ayce menu but it wasn't missed. I usually only expect that in larger cities, chain restaurants, etc. Their beer selection was excellent & had all my favorite imports such as Kirin, Sapporo and Asahi. We even were able to redeem a free beer here using a yelp promotion. Now we did not get to choose the beer & our server gave me a bud light but I was still grateful. It is a small restaurant but very cozy. The only thing I found slightly odd was how quiet it was. There was no music playing at all & it was completely silent at times. The quality of the sushi is high, there is such a selection and when you ask for the all you can eat it really is as much as you can manage eating from a simple California roll or to a Chef Specialty Seattle roll no restrictions. The quality of the restaurant is a different story. The location of this building is in an awkward part of a strip mall and inside is divey which docks down some stars for me unfortunately and incredibly dim we had to turn on our flashlight to read our menus. Sushi Gen is an amazing place to get sushi. If you love sushi this is a must try in Albuquerque. It has a very cool ambiance, it is a darker setting. The service isn't really on top of you all the time but they check up from time to time. My favorite thing about this place is that they do "All you can eat" sushi. I know what you are thinking "eww, all you can eat sushi it must be bad". The sushi is really good, Its not the best sushi in town but its the best for the price for sure. its about $22 a person but then you get to eat till you are stuffed. With me this is a problem with sushi normally because normally it is so expensive I can't get enough to get me full. Its about what I would spend getting less from somewhere else and as I said the sushi is good. As with any other sushi and as I have mentioned before, my favorite drink with sushi is some hot green tea, they have great green tea. I was a little bit worried reading some of these reviews, but I'm so glad I went. The all you can eat sushi is currently going for 20.99 a person, without drink. You can order as much or as little as you want with the caveat that you MUST finish what you've ordered or you'll be billed for the waste. Personally, I'm fine with that. It forces me to pace myself and really enjoy the food. We ordered around eight rolls total. We had a California roll, an Alaska roll, a Fiery California Roll, a Shrimp Tempura roll and a Fiery Alaska roll (we got a few doubles because we were especially impressed with the "fiery" rolls). The fiery rolls are SPECTACULAR. They're your standard roll with a lovely twist in the form of tempura battering and frying. It's an incredible taste and texture experience. The staff was absolutely lovely. We had a wonderfully attentive young man tend us. He was quick with refills, quick with sushi refills, and so very polite. The atmosphere is nice but it's a bit dark inside of the restaurant. There's construction across the street right now so it's a bit noisy, but I'm not going to fault Sushi Gen for something they can't control. I was impressed with the fish to rice ratio, the sauces, and the overall experience. We'll absolutely be back for more! read more
