There is sushi then there is "to experience sushi". The Sushi House operates on the later with profound precision. The quaint establishment is nestled between a cookies and ice cream store and AKT. Don't let the exterior full you or you'll miss out on the truly wonderful experience that Sushi House provides. Walking in, this is what I have experienced and expect from a sushi restaurant, small, quaint, several kneeling tables, an aquarium, a small yet well stocked bar and of course a huge sushi case with tons of raw yet clean and regulated fish. The staff here are very good as they know their Saki, of which is outstanding and they can suggest the best rolls. Finally, they're friendly and timely. The apps here are outstanding. Edamame is slightly salty and pop with flavor. Gyoza are perfectly cooked, the meat lingers with savory flavor and the dipping sauce is slightly tart, perfectly complimenting the gyoza. Tempura is cooked to a light golden brown, and you can taste the difference between tempura style frying and normal frying. Finally, the house salad is great with their tangy ginger dressing but don't forget the seaweed salad which the cucumber is refreshing and the seaweed light in a slightly sesame flavored sour vinaigrette. I can only speak to one main course as my daughter ordered it. The Bento B box is great. It has a nice selection of perfectly cooked tempura, teriyaki chicken, rice, etc. My daughter loved this item as she's not big on sushi and I was able to snag a few bites as well. Now, for the star of the show, sushi. My main roll of note when taking someone new to sushi is the Rainbow roll as is more focused on the fish than sauces and extras. The whitefish, salmon and Tuna are fresh and you can really taste their individual flavor profiles over the seaweed and imitation crab. The Roller coaster is a fabulous roll however there's so much going on that it's more Americanized than traditional. That said, the tempura shrimp is perfectly cook, the cream cheese and avocado cool down the jalapeno and sriracha while the whole roll is fried again topped with a wonderful unagi sauce. I could go on and on but the last roll I'll mention is the best roll I've had, anywhere, period. The Crazy Lobster is a MUST HAVE. Seriously it's that good with tempera fried lobster, nestled with its friends of cream cheese, sushi rice, and radish sprouts. The difference is they're rapped in soy paper topped with a spicy mayo and one single dollop of Sriracha. The flavors play well together as do the textures. Moreover the limited ingredients mean you can taste everything. If you don't like the seaweed (the green stuff they wrap sushi rolls in), then give this a try. Sushi House excels at everything sushi. From the authentic sushi experience, the warmth, the visuals including the sushi case and aquarium, and staff they all work harmoniously to provide the perfect evening with a date or even educate friends and family on quality sushi. This was a very expensive lunch and overall an underwhelming meal. The sushi was not very good quality and lacked a lot of flavor. The bento box had a strong odor immediately which was off putting. The teriyaki chicken and tempura shrimp also fell flat. We went on a Saturday, and decided to pop in a little early after our movie ended to see if we could be seated sooner than our reservation. They were packed to the gills! This spot isn't huge, but there were several other parties waiting to be seated, so we were very glad we made a reservation. They checked us in and said they would call once they had our table ready. We headed a few doors down to Bravo for a glass of wine as there isn't a lot of room to wait. After about 49 minutes we walked back, which happened to be our reservation time, and she was calling our name as soon as we walked in the door. We decided not to fill up on any apps because we wanted to try some sushi and several rolls. We ended up having some salmon, tuna and whitefish sushi, which were all fantastic and very fresh. Then we had several rolls (spicy tuna, Philadelphia, Godzilla and the Leawood rolls). They were all good, but the Philly, spicy tuna and Godzilla were excellent! My main issue is that their sashimi is overpriced and the pieces of fish are thin and small. I enjoy sushi and know it well, and that's just not how it should be done. I followed the yelp reviews to this cozy restaurant in Town Center and am really glad I did. I sat at the bar and had a very attentive server. I started with iced green tea and perused the sushi menu. I ended up talking to owner and chef Jin behind the bar, who explained uni was not good quality. However, they rotate other special seafood twice a week so there is always something new to try. The special fish of the day included madai (Japanese snapper), toro, and salmon belly. I ordered one of each of those along with whole scallop, tako, ika, saba, hamachi, and amaebi plus a yellowtail-jalapeno handroll. The handroll was made immediately, and it was full of delicious hamachi. Next, I received the majority of my nigiri on one platter, and everything was so fresh and delicious. My third plate had the scallop sushi, amaebi and fried head served on shredded daikon. I like the fried shrimp heads, and this one was particularly hot and flavorful. Everything was so good that I felt the desire to order more. I ordered one more piece each of madai and salmon belly, and one more amaebi with fried head. Sushi House was in the Leawood Town Center. I came here for dinner because it was restaurant week. I don't think some of the food on the restaurant week menu was on their normal menu unless I just missed it. There were a lot of people here and probably because of restaurant week but it could have been a coincidence. Nobody was sitting at the sushi bar so that was where I sat. I saw there was three private rooms towards the front of the restaurant with sliding doors for privacy. I ordered the Japanese Haru Maki, Wakasaya Steak and Veggie Donburi, and the Tempura Fried Ice Cream (this was $7 on their normal menu). In addition, I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll ($7.50) from their normal menu to try their sushi. I waited awhile before my food came out. The sushi chefs were all busy making rolls for other tables and one person was making alcoholic beverages. The Japanese Haru Maki were pretty much two egg rolls sliced in two. Of course, it was a different style of egg roll. It was good in my opinion as well as the sauce I dipped them in. The Spicy Tuna Roll came out next and they were spicy. It was fresh and tasted like other sushi places I've been to. The Wakasaya Steak and Veggie Donburi looked good and tasted good as well. The sauce was plentiful but began to be a little too much. The portion was just right for one person. Finally, the Tempura Fried Ice Cream was the last dish. The waiter asked if i wanted vanilla or green tea ice cream. I chose the green tea ice cream and it came out within a few minutes. It was interesting because I have never seen a dessert like that. I thought it was delicious so I finished everything on the plate including the whipped cream. Good food here and I wouldn't mind coming back if I wanted sushi and was in the area. They charred a chicken breast until it was burned, then sliced it matchstick style and poured Teriyaki Sauce over it. It was disgusting. All you tasted was burnt chicken.
