The best sushi in Long Beach. Sushi Kara is Korean owned and placed in a small strip mall. The interior is clean and casual, with nice lighting. Their menu is enormous, with a huge selection of specialty rolls, nigiri and sashimi, soups, entrees, and more. Good beverage selection, with both Japanese and Korean beers. Service was fast and polite, and all of the food was beautifully plated. The Seaweed Salad was fresh and flavorful, with nutty sesame oil and a touch of sweet vinegar. I got the Vege Tempura roll as my entree, which I highly recommend. The portion was enormous, with a hefty roll surrounded by assorted vegetable tempura pieces (onion, asparagus, kabocha, etc). The roll itself was delicious, stuffed with avocado, cucumber, and various chopped tempura vegetables. Perfect balance of fresh and fried. The tempura was light and crisp without being too oily. My boyfriend got a variety of nigiri and the "Long Beach" roll, and remarked that the fish was very high quality, and that everything tasted excellent. I love that they have Inari (sweet fried tofu pockets filled with rice), which I devoured alongside my vegetarian entree. We look forward to returning. read more

I was so excited to try Sushi Kara since it was recommended by a friend. Mind you, I live in the OC so I drove quite a bit to get there. I have a toddler who doesn't eat sushi, so on the way I picked him up Happy Meal so I could enjoy a nice dinner with my best friend. I was sat down by the waitress, asked what I wanted to drink, but instead of coming back with my drink, the waitress came back to tell me my son couldn't eat his meal. I totally get it's rude if an adult or anyone older than a toddler brings outside food to a restaurant. However never has been an issue at any other place if my toddler is eating something I've brought that's not sold in their establishment. I decided to leave and go eat sushi at a nearby location where in fact there was no issue like this. Was I supposed to have my toddler go eat outside then come back in? Wow! I absolutely love this place. I always come here during lunch time since I work in the same plaza. Most of the time lunch hour gets pretty hectic, and I'm not surprised because of how great the food tastes. Everyone is really friendly and the sushi is always fresh (you can tell by the quality). I love this place! I stopped in with a group of 3 others form my work and we were quickly greeted and picked our own table. The table was neatly set and were were handed menus with many choices to pick from. Each of us got the same lunch special with 1 fancy roll, 1 regular roll which also comes with miso soup. All I gotta say is I'm GLAD I found Sushi Kara! I was making my Yelp search rounds to find a suitable restaurant for my dear boyfriend, Brandon Y.'s birthday dinner with his friends. He loves sake, Japanese draft beer, and Japanese food in general. My Yelp query was scaled down to a few good picks in the area, but I ultimately chose Sushi Kara because the reviews were favorable + there was no mention of a long wait and strict "all-guests-in-your-party-must-be-here-before-getting-seated" policy. I even placed a reservation and when we arrived...the restaurant was practically empty on a Saturday night! Our reservation for eight somehow turned into a boisterous group of fifteen thanks to many rounds of sake and Sapporo (buy one beer or sake, get the second for $1)! The restaurant was incredibly kind to accommodate us. Some of our guests filtered in through the night and we kept adding more tables and chairs. The staff provided exceptional service. THE FOOD ...was tasty, beautifully presented, well portioned, and didn't break the budget. Between Brandon and I, we ordered two rolls, Bamboo roll and Baked Lobster rolls, and Hamachi Kama. It wound up being too much for us! Although the baked lobster roll didn't quite taste as good as expected due to the drizzle of sauce to mask the dry lobster toppings, all items were delish. The party ended on an awesome note -- a wonderfully crafted birthday dessert for Brandon! It was so cute. A bear carved from an orange, mochi ice cream, and more ice cream. As if the service wasn't stellar enough...they let us stay well past restaurant closing, took a group picture for us, and even split the bill into separate checks! The reason why this place gets a screaming five star review is because of the quality of the fish and the price that you pay for it, and that's what my review is going to focus on. I always get the chirashi bowl here because you get the essence of sushi separated so that you can truly dissect whether or not a place is worthy of your return and more money from your back pocket. The fish for one is definitely NOT frozen. You can taste the freshness and richness with every bite. If you don't believe me, bite into a tell-tale fish like tuna for instance. If its of the frozen variety, it will feel like a pasty, gritty mush in your mouth. This place doesn't have that funky texture. All the other types of fish that is on the plate just beckons you to keep on tasting how truly amazing the fish is. Buttery, rich, smooth, and fresh are all great ways to describe your sushi experience at Sushi Kara. And the price! Great value for what you get. You have to try this place! Now, I'm strictly a nigiri/sashimi person, meaning...I'm not that big into rolls. This one time, I took a friend of mine here and there were some rolls ordered. I have to admit, they were quite tasty. If I was suddenly in a mood to try something new, I would have to order the rolls as I know I will not be dissatisfied.
