They don't have happy hour, but they do have lunch special every day from 11AM - 3PM. Lots of special rolls from $9.50 to $12. I got the 8 piece nigiri sushi, $15 but $13 during lunch. It comes with salad and miso soup. The nigiri was delicious fresh and yummy, the chef included salmon, yellowtail, albacore, and tuna. Their staff throughout the years have always been friendly, and their service is good and timely for both dine in and pick up orders. They have a large menu and courses that can be enjoyed if sushi isn't your thing. In a city where it seems like there's a sushi place on every block, Sushi Kara was pretty impressive. I usually have a different sushi place down the street that I typically go to when in Long Beach, but I decided to try Sushi Kara for the first time. It's located within a large plaza like most of the other sushi spots in LB. The restaurant is a good size and at the time they had a large party of around 20 people. So obviously this place is "group" friendly. // SERVICE // I ordered to go so the only interaction that I had was with a waitress and with the sushi chef. The waitress was sweet and the sushi chef was really nice. I love sitting at the bar and being able to watch them cut the sashimi and make sushi. // FOOD // 10 piece mix sushi: Two pieces each of 5 different types of fish. It's the typical 5 fishes that many sushi places give in a combo set. The fish was nicely cut. The quality was good for some while others had too much sheen aka the white chewy tendon like string that's in fish. Albacore roll: This was surprisingly good! The albacore was fresh and they added baby fish eggs into the mix. Good flavor. Spicy tuna roll: Probably one of the best spicy tuna rolls that I've had. It actually had a kick to it! Usually you get a spicy tuna roll and it's not even spicy, but this one was very good as far as flavor goes. Overall, I enjoyed Sushi Kara. The food was pretty good and the staff was friendly. I have been going here for years. But I had my last meal here. I got the paradise roll and it is supposed to have Tuna and Salmon and they put old fish. A sushi chef can tell the difference. So I called and they said they used bluefin Tuna. There is an obvious difference between beautiful bluefin tuna and bad old disgusting rotten brown smelly fish. My husband loves this place, especially the Korean short ribs of all things! Little things are especially good that you might not expect---the vegetables that come with the dinners, the dressing for the salad. The tempura is crispy and not overly greasy. I don't think I'd give it 5 stars though since the fish wasn't omg compared to other places, but for $14, you can't really complain. I'd prob come back later and try some rolls. My two friends and I came here and shared the chicken teriyaki entree, a California tempura roll, a lemon roll, and the baked garlic albacore roll. My date and I got stomach aches after eating here today. We had the eel roll, salmon roll, albacore roll and 5 nigiri. Both of us ate some salmon, eel, miso soup and salad. Sorry to get all CSI, but I dont want anyone else, like you, to get sick. Better to avoid the risk all together. The cut of fish was noticeably low. Salmon had chewy sinew and the eel seemed like it had scales on it still. Texture of the nigiri cuts was very soft. It melts or falls apart in your mouth. I'm not sure if that is good or bad. Prior to getting sick and having to rush to a bathroom (TMI I know) I was going to give it 3 stars. I strongly recommend seeking other dining options. read more

I was so excited to try Sushi Kara since it was recommended by a friend. Mind you, I live in the OC so I drove quite a bit to get there. I have a toddler who doesn't eat sushi, so on the way I picked him up Happy Meal so I could enjoy a nice dinner with my best friend. I was sat down by the waitress, asked what I wanted to drink, but instead of coming back with my drink, the waitress came back to tell me my son couldn't eat his meal. I totally get it's rude if an adult or anyone older than a toddler brings outside food to a restaurant. However never has been an issue at any other place if my toddler is eating something I've brought that's not sold in their establishment. I decided to leave and go eat sushi at a nearby location where in fact there was no issue like this. Was I supposed to have my toddler go eat outside then come back in? Put the food away and tell him to wait to eat until I was done? I was extremely disappointed by the lack of empathy of this establishment. read more

I've been to Sushi Kara about 4 times now, and I really like it. It's conveniently located right off the 405 on Bellflower and easy to spot. Every time I've been in I'm greeted right away and the place is always clean. The rolls are nicely sized and the prices are very reasonable. They aren't packed super small and covered in a big rice ball like a lot of other places. I'm usually on a time constraint when I visit, which is never a problem, because they are super quick in preparation and cashing out. I've been to a good amount of sushi places, but I always go back to this one. The service is fast, for one. Portion sizes for the price are more than reasonable. And third, the flavors are all there. What I love the most is the simplicity of their rolls that really works to their advantage. In a lot of sushi restaurants I go to they try to do all these fancy things (i.e. asparagus), and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's great to spice things up. For me, at least, I've been leaving sushi restaurants with a little disappointment because I can't have a complete set of my favorite rolls because they decided to add asparagus or crushed spicy hot Cheetos to it. The best sushi in Long Beach. Sushi Kara is Korean owned and placed in a small strip mall. The interior is clean and casual, with nice lighting. Their menu is enormous, with a huge selection of specialty rolls, nigiri and sashimi, soups, entrees, and more. Good beverage selection, with both Japanese and Korean beers. Service was fast and polite, and all of the food was beautifully plated. The Seaweed Salad was fresh and flavorful, with nutty sesame oil and a touch of sweet vinegar. I got the Vege Tempura roll as my entree, which I highly recommend. The portion was enormous, with a hefty roll surrounded by assorted vegetable tempura pieces (onion, asparagus, kabocha, etc). The roll itself was delicious, stuffed with avocado, cucumber, and various chopped tempura vegetables. Perfect balance of fresh and fried. The tempura was light and crisp without being too oily. My boyfriend got a variety of nigiri and the "Long Beach" roll, and remarked that the fish was very high quality, and that everything tasted excellent. I love that they have Inari (sweet fried tofu pockets filled with rice), which I devoured alongside my vegetarian entree. We look forward to returning. read more
