They charged me $15.50 for the tempura roll. After tip for just two rolls and a coke it was $34. Call me cheap but that's a lot for a no meat lunch. I have 2 stars cause the waiter was nice enough. We visited this restaurant around 6pm on a Friday night, and it was busy. We were lucky to have one table available for us. The service was good and everyone was very nice. This time I ordered the soy paper salmon, which was very light, fresh, and delicious! I also ordered the crunchy albacore, which was also fresh and bursting with flavors! The cucumber roll was also very refreshing and light. The miso soup is served with seaweed and tofu, which is always a great combination! Found this spot on a whim when I had some time to kill before meeting with a client. I was quickly seat at the sushi bar upon arrival and the servers were pretty quick on getting me started... a little too hasty and rushed perhaps. All good tho. I started off with the ponzo tofu aka agedashi tofu. I got to watch the chef make it. When I took my first sip of the broth, it was too vinegar-y, so not sure if it's their version; normally it's a bit sweet. I'll pass on that next time... I got a special order of "sashimi roll" which was basically the cucumber roll hold the cucumber. It was really good and the chef gave me two different sauces to dip it in. I feel like the rolls were too small for what they're worth, and have been seeing that alot lately. Next up I just did the bluefin Toro sushi and gawd darn it was hecka fresh! However, every roll we ordered came out looking pathetic. Size, presentation, and taste were all very mediocre. When I mentioned to the server about how this is the worst looking roll I've ever been served. She responded "thank you" which was pretty comical. First order was a baked Garlic Albacore roll, arrived flambé and was absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked and beautiful presentation. I was still hungry, the waiter recommended the baked Snow Roll (snow crab, cream cheese & avocado inside, topped with baked white fish, eel sauce and green onion). Found this place on Yelp because I was craving some sushi. I brought my mom here for a lunch. And it didn't disappoint. They have lunch specials everyday till 3. Not too bad of a selection and it includes miso and salad. I usually for the combo of sushi/sashimi with one special roll. I had the low crab roll wrapped in cucumber and it was pretty good. I had a few bites of my mom's poke salad and it was a tad spicy for me but still pretty good and a very generous portion. Never had an issue with parking in front, but I've only been there on a Friday for a late lunch. Inside is clean and service is pretty attentive. We usually sit at the counter and find that we get better service and our food is served quicker. For appetizers, we've tried the Mussels, and Monkey Brain. Mussels are always good. Monkey Brain was interesting. You'll enjoy if you like mushrooms. Tried the Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup recently and loved it. It's s dollar cheaper during the lunch special hrs. Perfectly spiced for me. We love the calamari roll, seriously, the best fried calamari I've had. Love the portion size on this one. Baked Lobster Roll, with perfectly baked lobster. Rainbow Roll and the Hot Night Roll yummy as well. Spicy Tuna Salad is also really good and the portion size is large. Customer service is friendly. Despite the burnt ribs, one of them was undercooked. The stir fried veggies appear shriveled. Salmon skin rolls are similarly thinly sliced. Not packed well. On a Sunday, late afternoon, wanting to overdose on uni. Why would Maruhide Uni Club be closed on a Sunday? My friend suggested Sushi Kara since most have talked about this place as the best place for sushi nearby work. Sure, why not, let's try it. I'm always a fan of sitting at the sushi bar just watching a sushi chef at work. Asking him if the uni and oysters were fresh, he was really honest to say because of the storm last week, the uni may be on the bitter side. Just how I like it. The oysters are hama oysters. Hot green tea is brewed because I can see the waitress doing that from my seat. With the menu you get one of those sheets you mark your order on. What I marked is yellowtail, uni, oysters, salmon roe and the Aloha roll. That roll was a little bit spicy since there is chili oil drizzled all over it. Next is the smelt roe with quail egg on top and the candy roll. It's not named after Candice and there was no sugary candy on top neither. It did have my kind of candy which reminded me of a rainbow roll at other sushi places. I always want to see what kind of Dragon rolls they have but I would order the Aloha roll again. I thought it was great service, the waitress was very helpful and was able to answer our questions. She also mentioned we can order with the sushi chef directly if it's something we wanted that is not listed on the order sheet. The sushi chef was very happy that orders were placed with him. Green tea was always freshened up and refilled without asking. When asked if I knew of a good sushi restaurant in Long Beach, the answer is yes. read more

I think my taste buds are becoming somewhat numb to lot of sushi places. Most of them are starting to taste the same with the exception of few, mostly in Little Tokyo area. In the past I would've easily given at least 4 stars if a place served fresh fish, but that's almost a given and expected these days. That's kind of the case with this place. There's nothing wrong. Tuna - tasted pretty average. 3 stars. Salmon - color was a bit pale but taste and texture was good. About 3.5 stars. Inari - just standard. 3 stars. Black snapper - never had these before. I always get red snapper but wasn't available. This looked exactly like red snapper with the exception of silver and black skin. I'm not sure but it seemed like they seared it a bit. It was kind of chewy at the edges. I still prefer red snapper over this. 3 stars. Fatty yellowtail - I don't see these too often. Whenever you see something with "fatty" at a sushi place, get it. The extra fat makes it buttery smooth. 4 stars. I think the best time to come here is during lunch for their lunch specials. Some of the items looked pretty decent for the price. For dinner it can get kind of pricey if you go strictly with nigiri sushi or sashimi. I spent about $30 for everything I ordered and I was still hungry afterward. read more

I noticed that the menu had a variety of Korean items to choose from and my waiter was Korean, friendly and accommodating. I suspected the owners are Korean which is okay with me as long as the food is solid. I went with the chefs sashimi which had 20 pieces of sashimi. Everything was fresh and tasty and even the wasabi and ginger were delish, which is a decent sign of a quality sushi joint. The green tea here is made roasted brown rice and went great with my sashimi. Heart attack: Deep fried, stuffed with cream cheese,spicy tuna and drizzled with spicy Japanese mayo and eel sauce. Nice crunch, very flavorful. Nice spice to it. Im not usually a fan of cooked up spicy tuna but I'd eat this again. Hamachi sashimi: Nicely cut thick pieces of Hamachi. VERY fresh and satisfying!!! Black snapper: LOVE the presentation!!!! I never had this before and would get this over and over again!!!! I should have ordered two of those. This came with a fried up black snapper skeleton and they left the meat in his cheeks. It was so good eating that and the deep fried fins. An order of salmon and Suzuki sushi: Very fresh. The Suzuki fish was another I never had before. I'd get that again as well!!!! Sweet shrimp: Love the presentation. They serve the heads live when they're still moving. After you eat the shrimp they come back with the live heads deep fried. NOM NOM NOM NOM!!!!! I forget the name but it was a roll with spicy tuna and crab meat and topped with salmon and avocado. Very tasty roll. The PIC choose this one. I ate this on the way to Hollywood since I was pretty full. Spicy popcorn lobster: BOOOOOOMB. Baked cali roll, topped with fried popcorn lobster and a nice drizzle of spicy japo sauce and eel sauce. Melt in your mouth kinda food. Next time im trying the baked lobster roll. After ALLLLLLLLLL that food, they gave us some mocha ice cream. So tasty and cleansed the pallet as well. I've had food from here twice, once was take out, the other dine in. Both times the food was really fresh and tasty. I am sure that I will be making this place one of my top go-to places for casual sushi dinners in long beach. So far I have tried the Rainbow and Paradise rolls, both containing very fresh fish. My bf has ordered the hot night roll. I'm not one to order rolls with mayo or crunchy stuff on them but I tried it and it was very tasty and not overwhelmingly creamy. They don't have happy hour, but they do have lunch special every day from 11AM - 3PM. Lots of special rolls from $9.50 to $12. I got the 8 piece nigiri sushi, $15 but $13 during lunch. It's located within a large plaza like most of the other sushi spots in LB. The restaurant is a good size and at the time they had a large party of around 20 people. So obviously this place is "group" friendly. // SERVICE // I ordered to go so the only interaction that I had was with a waitress and with the sushi chef. The waitress was sweet and the sushi chef was really nice. I love sitting at the bar and being able to watch them cut the sashimi and make sushi. // FOOD // 10 piece mix sushi: Two pieces each of 5 different types of fish. It's the typical 5 fishes that many sushi places give in a combo set. The fish was nicely cut. The quality was good for some while others had too much sheen aka the white chewy tendon like string that's in fish. Albacore roll: This was surprisingly good! The albacore was fresh and they added baby fish eggs into the mix. Good flavor. Spicy tuna roll: Probably one of the best spicy tuna rolls that I've had. It actually had a kick to it! Usually you get a spicy tuna roll and it's not even spicy, but this one was very good as far as flavor goes. Overall, I enjoyed Sushi Kara. The food was pretty good and the staff was friendly.
