The server was very nice. However, this "sushi," if you can even call it that, was by far the worst I have ever had. As a sushi enthusiast, I estimate that I have been to around 20 different sushi establishments, but not even the worst of those stoops to the atrocious level of quality served here. The fish was so bad that I had trouble finishing my first plate, and upon finishing my last bite, a horrific aftertaste came upon me, such that I could not contain it. I promptly threw up my dinner in the bathroom. Never have I ever seen such blatantly awful food quality in a restaurant. Never have I ever thrown up in a restaurant from the taste of an entree served there. I guess there's a first for everything. The whole restaurant smelled like pee when I walked in. The sushi is really not good. Way too much rice and the rice isn't even seasoned like sushi rice should be. The service was fine if a little slow. The shrimp tempura is actually awesome. It was greasy and not tempura but breaded and tasted like it was fried in old grease. Kitchen food is all breading and pastry with maybe a 1/4 tsp of ingredients in the middle (dumplings, spring rolls, etc). Kids wouldnt even eat the chicken nuggets because they were almost all breading. Noodle dishes with chicken tasted like boiled chicken with some sauce on it. Chicken teriyaki tasted like boiled/steamed chicken with a little sauce on it. Curry tasted like peanut butter and maybe curry paste. Sushi was inedible for the most part, packed with rice and mayonnaise. The amount of cost cutting is offensive. An entire staff of children, don't even wanna know who is managing the kitchen. Ok. I get why so many people love this place. You get lots of food for one set price. You can order a few dishes at a time, so everything is hot when it reaches your table. Service was great. Our waitress regularly came by and checked on us and our orders came out fairly quickly. So why the one-star rating? The quality of the food left a lot to be desired. It was hot. We started to leave and told manager no service and his only remark was server was cutting lemons. As far am I'm concerned he could've went to cut the lemons. It's not a buffet, but it is all you can eat sushi and when it's quality, that's a good thing. Service was good. I arrived towards the end of the lunch hour, so it was a little slow when it started as there were a lot of people ordering. But as my meal progressed, most folks packed up and left, leaving me with fewer customers and less waiting for my refills. Simple enough. You get a menu that you keep for your visit. You place orders. They bring you sushi. You eat the sushi. And if you want more, you order more and eat more. As long as you keep eating, they'll keep bringing you more freshly made-to-order rolls and sushi. All for a fixed price. I had four or so rolls as well as a couple pieces. I'm silly, but sometimes I want a crab stick or two. And some masago always goes down well. Try the "Crazy Monkey Roll" - fried banana topped with crab and eel. Good stuff! Sushi King is a real example of a diamond in the rough. The almost cheesy exterior doesn't do justice for the large and elegant insides of this restaurant. Sushi King deserves it claim to fame as the "largest hibachi and sushi restaurant in town". There are so many beautiful elements to this place and the most beautiful is the food. The all you can eat sushi buffet is less than $15.00 (depending on the time of day you go) and is most definitely worth your money. This includes appetizers, entrees and the large selection of sushi. From my experiences everything is made fresh and comes out hot when you order. I love the gyoza and shumai dumplings before my delectable choice of sushi. The best way to have Sushi King is with a small to medium group of friends. If everyone gets the buffet you can taste a little bit of everything while passing around plates. I have yet to try all the rolls and therefore haven't picked a favorite but the presentation of the Volcano and the taste of the Sea Angel are both impressive enough to be ordered on your first visit. read more

I've been here a couple of times, and outside of the ridiculously low prices, it's just okay. It's tough to really get behind any AYCE sushi spot. The entire concept seems to contradict the entire art of sushi making and at some point has to compromise freshness and quality. But there is a draw to having any opportunity to eat sushi en masse for under $15. Yes, it's a low price - and that's even if you go for dinner. What I remember is that you can choose from two price menus - a $13.99 and an $11.99. The difference between the two is that the former gives you more choices than the latter. Like Sakura, they serve a la carte, so you tell the waitress which rolls you want, they make and serve, you eat and you can keep ordering until you're full. The menu is full of interesting rolls and all of them look good while you read them. And when the rolls do arrive they definitely look good. As far as the taste there are times when the fish isn't particularly flavorful. Sushi King's fish has never been rotten or anything of the sort. It's just that it doesn't slap you with amazing flavor when you try them. One interesting point of note - they do an inconsistent job keeping the wasabi fresh. The waitress will usually bring that and some ginger out with your order and on one occasion the wasabi was as hard as a rock. We had to ask for more, fresher wasabi because we didn't want to use that looked like it had been left out for a few hours. The service is pretty good and the decor is nice and inviting. Overall the place isn't a must-go, but I'd never turn down a chance to dine there if I'm nearby. But there are better sushi spots all over the area - this one just happens to be one of the most convenient. JV read more

I recall being disappointed several years ago with dinner so, haven't been back. Yesterday's lunch experience has won my vote. For the price, it wasn't bad. I say it's definitely worth a try especially, during lunch. I was surprised to see it so packed! I enjoyed the cooked food and the salad bar options the most. The flavor & consistency of the sushi rice was acceptable too. Service was the best I've had at any Sushi King. Not sure if it was because of the server or if all servers are as pleasant. I noticed no one(employee) was looking at my plate like a hawk to make sure I finish all of my food and that truly made the experience more relaxed! Thank goodness!!! I realize there are some customers who take advantage but, monitoring paying customers like children is the biggest annoyance at most of the AYCE made-to-order sushi the buffets I've been to. My server Kevin was sweet with a great smile. Even complimented me on my watch and asked what brand it was, then thanked me for sharing the information with him. I explained that this was my first visit. Kevin was a great server for a first timer-explaining the process in detail with a great personality. The establishment is huge inside and beautiful withe an excellent balance of modern and traditional elements. All of the hard smooth elements shine either as a property of their materials or because everything was so clean. In regards to decor I'm fond of the lanterns hanging above each seating area, the high backed luxurious looking booths, the faux leather high-back chairs and the intricate "wooden" Japanese landscapes sandwiched between the two glass panes separating the rows of booths. I like that the staff wear all black and that the servers and hostess wear ties. The ladies wear colored ties while the gents wear black ties. Seeing a couple holding hands over the table made me think this could be a spot for a date. Although I have no interest in a sushi first/early on date. I find nothing sexy, or visually appealing about shoving roll pieces into ones mouth across from someone your trying to wow. Then shoving this thing to the side trying to break it down into more manageable pieces (yes I'm working on a shrimp tempura roll). For seem reason I visualize a cow masticating grass. Now if you're past all the cuteness, trying to eat a sushi roll all seductive like they do in the movies go for it. Food: I requested that my crab bite come without the spicy mayo (I have an aversion to mayo based sauces). It came with mayo all over. And scraping mayo off tempura ain't no easy task. I later ordered another w/o mayo. Dry of course. I ate two small rolls, 6 crab & shrimp bites (meh) and seaweed salad. A decent workday lunch. Been coming here since they opened up a while back. AYCE sushi/ Japanese entree $16, price increased since they opened up. You have to eat everything you order or you will be charged. Food is fresh because they make it to order, so never had problems there. There are a variety of sushi to choose from, from the standard rolls, to speciality rolls to the raw sushi. And they have hibachi and teriyaki dishes too. The fried rice is good, I always make sure to get that! Oh they have a soup and salad bar and a few seafood that's included in the price but for some reason the staff never tells me about it...hmm? It's in the cut so you can't really see it from where the sitting area is so ask your waiter if they don't mention it. read more

Smells really bad in here immediately upon entering. Smells like dirty mop water and I should have not stayed and gone somewhere else just based on that. The bathrooms were even worse smelling. When eating here the restaurant looks really cool there is even a robot that servers you sometimes, however the service was not good we were there for over an hour and didn't get out drinks refilled once and after we were done eating it took around 20 minutes for us to get our check. Tonight wasn't the night. I love the idea how it's made to order but the quality of the sushi isn't that great. The sushi rice doesn't taste seasoned, it taste like normal steamed jasmine rice. The chicken fried rice tasted very bland and the some of my rolls that contained raw fish smelled too fishy to my taste. Everything that was fried was good but as for the sushi, I'd rather go somewhere else. The best way to sum up Sushi King is A-OK. We came here for a double date dinner and the price is $16.99 for AYCE (All you can eat) Sushi. This restaurant is very spacious and has plenty of seating. I have only been to the Sushi King in Richmond and there are a few differences: this one has a small "buffet bar" where you can grab your own small appetizers like miso soup, seaweed salad and dessert. The other is that they don't limit your order to two rolls here, you can order as much as you would like in one order, and for some select rolls, you can order half a roll to try it out! Such a great idea. Some of the things I tried: dumplings, seaweed salad, Salmon roll, Eel Nigiri, and some other specialty rolls that I don't recall. Overall, the quality is just average, about the same as grocery store sushi or along the lines of Yama Sushi. The sushi didn't taste old/low quality but it also didn't taste super fresh as well. The sashimi is only for carry out. It's cool that they place most of everyone's roll on their own plate to limit any confusion. I think someone in our group asked if it was okay if we didn't finish two pieces of sushi and our waitress was very cool with it. I remember most of these sushi places had a strict rule about No Sushi Left Behind.. I think for the price and for the quality of food I was getting, I would pay about $14 for AYCE. They have a large parking lot in front of the restaurant that's shared with a grocery store and other shops. The resturant is large with a lot of booths and tables. They have a large meeting room you can reserve for large groups or parties. The customer service is great. The staff is very attentive. Yes it's all you can eat sushi but not on a buffet looking cold and rubbery. They have a large menu. You order what you want and it's prepared fresh for you. There is a salad buffet with soup and some fruit. The do serve some alcoholic beverages. On this visit. I had a small spring salad with ginger dressing,Kani salad,seaweed salad and miso soup from the salad bar. I ordered pepper tuna tataki,vegetable tempura,gyoza dumplings and edamame from the appetizer menu. I had spicy tuna roll,queen roll. The rolls were very fresh and tasty. And I've never experienced such pain trying to finish my plate after one of the waitresses came up to us asking if we're going to finish our food bc of the charge. I've never seen such thinly sliced fish on top of sushi. My salmon almost didn't look orange and it was so thin I could see the rice. I almost couldn't see that my Philadelphia roll had salmon. It's nice that it's unlimited but poor quality sushi. Edamame is a must for me when grabbing sushi. Edamame was unlimited as a buffet appetizer option but it was very cold. I love sushi and I love sushi king. But this particular location is not on my top three or five. The customer service was great without a long wait, and my table and I were paid a lot of attention. The waitress was able to multitask clearing tables and taking orders at the same time. My problem was the food. My sushi was room temp!!! A great way to get sick. And it was swimming in soy sauce with some type of dairy floating on top of it that didn't look appetizing at all. You can kind of guess what it looked like. My friend's food was cold and the shells were on all the shrimp, leaving us to pick through our entrees. It would have been fine if the shrimp weren't mixed in with rice and begins. That's just lazy. The rest of the sushi was decent. Nothing to boast about. The soup and salad bar was good. And the plus is the all you can eat ice cream, pie, and cheesecake. BEWARE, they go by height, NOT AGE, when determining how much you pay for children. Reasons for 1 star: -Food was okay. Sushi is better than grocery store quality. A lot of rolls have cream cheese in them which in my opinion is a filler. -I had to pay the adult price (18.99) for my 10 year old daughter who ate 1 roll, fruit, and ice cream. For $19 I could of taken her to a better quality restaurant and been able to take home whatever she didn't eat. I am heartbroken to have to make this review. Although the food here is still wonderfully done, I am HUGE on customer service. Well the first strike against this specific location is that they charge your children by their HEIGHT! Any "child" over 42" tall will be charged as an adult! Ken, the owner, said NO EXCEPTIONS! So when I asked if a little person will be charged as a child, he stated no, they would be charged as an adult. The point is, height is not something within anyone's control. Setting the price of food based on height is discriminatory. Thankfully this is a franchise and that policy is restricted to this location alone. So, this is one of the reasons my family won't patronize this location again. The next challenge came with our server "JORDON" aka J.J. ...aka "SLO-Jo". I wanted to believe he was having a bad day, but he was the worst! When I tried to politely explain to him in a calm, even keeled tone that he was messing up our order, forgetting our requests for forks, wasabi or anything else we needed, or having us to ask for items three and four times, Jordon thought it was wise to argue his point. Then proceeds to tell us that there would be an automatic 18% gratuity. I was actually trying to help him with achieving the goal of a great tip from a party of seven with two kids (our family tips well!) but he wanted to still argue his point! At this point I was done...."thank you Jordon may I speak to the owner (Ken)". Ken comes over and my request was that we wanted a new server. Ken obliged us with an excuse that Jordon had hurt his ankle and that was the reason we were receiving BAD SERVICE! In comes Justin, our food was up quickly, order was right the first time, he was polite, we were happy to pay him a $30 tip. We even tipped Noah the young man that kept coming by to collect our empty plates. Another thing to note is that Jordan, the previous server basically canceled the orders that we'd previously made, resulting in half of our party never even getting their food. Justin took care of us though. Our new orders were hot and fresh. I doubt we will return to this location. But if we do return, I will be sure not to sit in Jordon's section. Dessert options, cheese cake, pecan pie and ice cream. The ice cream come in ready made cups. They just have your typical flavors of vanilla chocolate and strawberry. Also Push pops, orange flavor as well. I hope one day they would add green tea ice cream, to keep it authentic. Fruit bar has canned Longon, canned peaches, grapes and pineapple. Wish there was more to choose as far as non canned fruits. But fruit cleanses the palette. Only minor issue I have here is that I need to inspect the plates and silverware at the bar. Some of them took a beating for being used over time and I also make sure there is no left over food particles on it. In comparison, I do like Sakura off of Lynnhaven pkwy. But they get packed on weekends and too busy with long wait times just for your food. Since this place is close to me. They give me the best option, and this would.
