Their miso soup is honestly one of the best I've ever had, perfectly balanced, just salty enough without being overpowering, and never that fishy or stale taste you sometimes get elsewhere. I've been coming to Sushi Kuma since I was a freshman in high school, and it's been one of my go-to sushi spots for years. I always order the Golden Gate Roll and the Arigato Roll, which are still delicious and keep me coming back. The service is usually friendly, and the atmosphere is casual and comfortable. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because I've noticed the quality isn't quite as consistent as it used to be. The Yummy Yummy roll is my favorite here! It's a larger roll filled with shrimp, avocado, cucumber, cream cheese, and crab meat. The gyoza is another solid pick and tasted great as usual, though I didn't care for the dipping sauce this time. I order a lunch bento box my two picks were salmon nigiri and sesame chicken. They pile a good amount of the salad and chicken, rice is small portion tho. There sesame chicken was good it look over cooked but it wasn't. It had some juiciness to it which was good and good flavor. The salad it depends on what you like for me it was okay I like more of a sesame refreshing taste but not bad salad and portion was good. The salmon nigiri was okay. I had better quality at other restaurants before. The miso that came with the bento box was good. Most cases you don't get much tofu and that was the case but flavor was good it had slight sweetness to the soup which was new but still good. On to the thing I didn't like. Their appetizer pepper fin was thick and it tastes frozen different from pepper fin I had that will melt in my mouth. It tasted frozen when you bite into it you can fell that rubber icy texture. We order spicy edamame and it wasn't even spicy and flavor if anything it tasted just more salt so with slight pinch of dried red peppers but for a dollar more I wouldn't waste getting it get the regular one. Also we drank our water pretty fast and it wasn't until we got the bill I had to ask for a refill on water. So this place was okay to each of their own if you guys like this place but it was okay. read more

First time here as we wanted to try a new spot in town for bento. Nice clean interior with table and a long banquette across the back wall. And of course the standard sushi counter. Service was efficient. Our dinner bento boxes were a big let down though. Meat in both meals was overcooked and tough. My cal rolls were like day old mushy, not fresh as noticeable by the avocado being brown. Not good at all. The dinner bento box meal is more pricey than other places too... This was a semi-random neighborhood choice that really paid off. The criteria was "Sushi near where my best friend lives that has decent reviews" and it checked all the boxes. We pulled up and saw the ubiquitous "50% off rolls" offer and I was temporarily disheartened--not because I don't love a discount, which I most definitely do, but because sometimes if you need a gimmick to draw people in, your sushi doesn't speak for itself. Not the case here. My friend (and frequent comrade in sushi consumption) specifically noted that the sushi tasted fresh, unlike one specific place that runs the 50% "special." I really appreciated the menus, which had a section for beginners and children, but didn't lean as heavily on spicy tuna and cream cheese as so many menus I see. The staff were friendly and helpful; the prices reasonable. We did not veer from sushi, but there were soups, noodles and other non-raw, non-sushi fusion options to choose from as well. It makes me really sad to have to update my review to this. My husband and I are long time customers of this location (3+ years). We hadn't been in for awhile because we moved but still decided to make the 1 hour and 25 minute drive over the el dorado hills location. We hadn't asked for green tea since it was cold out and it was absolutely delicious, until my husband noticed lipstick was on his cup exactly where he had been drinking. I did not have any lipstick on for it to had been mine. We told the waiter and they apologized and brought a new cup out but no one seemed to understand just how disgusting and unhygienic that was. I tried to explain it to the waitress who took it off our tab but she didn't seem very concerned about it. Due to this experience we won't be giving our business here again and it makes me so sad. We started of by ordering two rolls one which was fried and had crab, salmon and avacado..yum The next roll was the California just your basic roll crab, cucumber yum.We also ordered there all famous and spectacular bulgogi beef street tacos..The beef is so tender and a bit sweet and you get so much with one order..Yum this is a must see the pictures below .. Our meal consisted of a Veggie Sunomono, Ahi Poke Tacos and a Tempura Roll (I added cooked shrimp and had it deep fried). The Sunomono was the best part of the meal. The Tempura Roll was dry and lacked flavor - even after I doctored it up with washi. My Tacos were the worst, soggy and the Poke lacked flavor. I've been to this place about a dozen times, and really liked it.... But today I went and got lunch went back to work and ate... Then a couple of hours later, my skin was turning bright red, head was throbbing, stomach all upset... Worst sushi I have ever had. I ate it because I was starving and we all know if we're desperate we will eat. Granted I did pick out all the, what tasted like microwaved pre- deep fried shrimp out of my roll.. since it was chewy not crunchy.. and I mean chewy. It was very deceiving as to how much shrimp was actually in the deep fried mess, hollow parts of fried with nothing inside other than a mini shrimp about the side of a newborn finger tip. I called this order in, they said 10 mins, I was there in 10 mins, yes I know deep fried rolls usually come warmer, but this entire meal, even my spicy mayo on side seemed like they left it out in the sun the whole 10 mins. It's summer time yall. I asked for masago to be added, looks like they just threw a pile on in the middle of the roll, I went ahead and moved it around myself, but clearly presentation and taste was awful.
