We came to this restaurant 8 years ago and had not been back since because our experience was so bad. Tonight we decided to give it another chance, thinking after 8 years, some things may have improved. Sadly, tonight's performance was just as bad if not worse. The service was poor from the moment we walked through the front door when right behind us another customer pushed her way through to get her order picked up. We were not sure if we were suppose to wait to be seated or seat ourselves. Noone said hello, we just stood there in that big open room with almost all the tables empty but two. Finally someone asked us very awkward if we were there to pick up, we responded with a no, "dinner for two" please. We were rushed over to a table right in the middle of the restaurant sandwhiched between the ontly other two tables being occupied. My boyfriend is tall and could barely fit in the chair since there was no room to move backwards. We waited for someone to come help us, and waited and waited and when we finally saw someone come our way, he was quickly given orders to go clean another table before waiting on us...only chinese being spoken at a Japanese restaurant? ok. Someone took our order and finally we were on our way to what we hoped would be a redeeming dinner. While waiting for our food, a few more guests began to stroll in. Unfortunately among them was a family with some very loud and what to us seemed like rude kids. The parents just did not seem to have any self awarenes of the kids being extremely loud, people were being polite around them and trying to make seem as if the kids were cute, but the honest truth is they were not cute, they were spoiled, loud and rude. Then while trying to settle into our dinner and trying to have a conversation, the waitress begins to reset the tables and drags every chair she can possibly find. You know the sound, the screeching of wood agains a floor is almost like nails on a chalk board...so rude!. Lastly the food, The soup was to salty, the fish was over cooked and the portions served seperately in those awkward dishes made no sense. The vegetable tempura and the beer was good. The room is set up very poorly, maybe it is so loud in there because it is just a big open room. I am not sure what it is about this restaurant but we don't feel welcomed. The kids started whailing and screaming and we quickly asked for the check and got the heck out of there. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK!. We usually go to our favorite sushi restaurants in San Carlos on Laurel Avenue, where we always feel welcomed and experience a fantastic customer service and delicious food. We wanted to give our local restaurant one more chance, now we have and we don't have to go there again. read more

Good decent neighborhood sushi restaurant. Been here a couple of times. Sushi is good/average. Chicken katsu is worth mentioning, as it was not too oily and very moist. There are TVs there if you want to also watch sports. read more

Have never not ordered sushi anywhere but this is my first time getting sushi outside of my favorite all you can eat spot in West Haven, CT so it was difficult adjusting to the astronomical prices when you actually are charged for every little thing i'd like to eat! I went with the grilled mackerel and was really pleasantly surprised! 2 large filets and a half and a bowl of rice that didn't amaze until I juiced the lemon over it - really nice. Also came with soup and salad - a tuna roll on top and I'm full and spent no more than $20 - A successful dining out experience. My gf's Seafood Udon soup was also quite delicious and considerable in quantity. read more

Much better spots in the area First impression: walk in and there's no AC. On my visit temp inside was warm and that's not a good feeling for sushi where the fish also seemed warm. Menu had the typical offerings for Japanese. I ordered some sushi, a few rolls. Was expensive for the area. Spent $50 without trying. Yet was charged for a miso soup! Come on that's rich Sushi was ok except for the uni that was not good and possibly spoiled. I suffered the Gi results as proof of that. Surprising as I've been eating sushi 20 years and I know the difference. This is the first time I've experienced bad uni. Too expensive. Not great quality. I have been here a few times. My last visit was a huge disappointment. Unlikely to come back. It was a weekend dinner. Understandably, it was crowded. Took us 15 minutes to sit down. No problem. A football game was shown on the TV. We ordered our food before the half time break. Guess what, well into the 3rd quarter, my whole family was still waiting for food. Meanwhile, everyone who was there for take-out got food right away. Apparently this is their business model. Once you sit down, they don't care about you any more. After celebrating Cinco de Drinko on empty stomaches, my friend decided to scout the food options. Since we had mexican food the night before and hadn't had sushi in a while, we decided to try Sushi Kuu. We ordered a seaweed salad (AMAZINGLY fresh and yummy), Spicy spider roll, Spicy rainbow roll, and Spicy tuna roll. We snuck in right before they were closing, so they were anxious for us to pay, but very accommodating and let us stay and eat. My friend is a sushi snob and I say that with much affection. I was astonished when he said, "Well, this ties up with (insert other sushi restaurant name here)." In all the time I have known him, the only place we've gone to sushi is the "other place". The fact that he uttered that he loved Sushi Kuu is HUGE! The food was awesome, staff was friendly and service was awesome. read more

I order sushi take out from this place regularly, I have never dined in, though. Every experience I have had ordering take out has been great, my order is never messed up, and always neatly packed. I thought the service here was great. I was very impressed with the speed of the service. The older woman who took our orders was very fast with the drinks and salads. The food here is good but it didn't 'wow' me. Nothing was particularly bad about it though. The menu seemed a little bit typical to me. Went on a quiet Tuesday night. First, the Hawaiian Poke was mostly big hunks of onion, with little tuna, & the sauce was barely perceptible. Second, the Maya Roll is topped with a piece of eel, topped with a piece of sea urchin. The photo in the menu looked great so I thought I'd give it a try. Everything up to the uni was great. There was one piece of uni, divided amongst the five piece roll. It was so little, I pointed out to the wait staff, & explained how it did not come close to the picture on the menu. The chef told them it was right & it was because it was expensive. Fine, then take new pictures because it was completely deceiving. Will not be returning. read more

Tried this place tonight with my friend. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed. There is a flatscreen television on the wall showing pictures of the sushi they make which helps with selection. The service is swift if not a bit rushed. One of my orders was taken incorrectly and I got the wrong thing as a result of this. They apparently had run out of Toro and Bluefin Tuna sushi the night before but still had the regular Yellowfin variety. As far as the food goes, the nigiri is superb. They have the usual choices of fish, all very good quality and fresh. Their beef sushi (beef nigiri) was unsual but delicious. Their rolls are good with a fairly large selection and generous portions. the price is fair and moderate and us about 20 dollars a person which is cheap given how much we ordered. Overall this is definately now one of my favorite spots and will be seeing repeat business from me for time to come. read more

Stopped in for lunch a couple of weeks ago - complete waste of time and money. I ordered the Lunch Bento (2 items for $9.95, 3 items for $11.95), and was told I couldn't choose sashimi twice (doesn't say that anywhere on the menu), so I paid the extra $1.50. The waitress couldn't tell me which type of sashimi I would get, even though there were only two other diners in the place, and the chef was standing five feet away from us (maybe ask?). Soon after my food arrived, the chef and the waitress disappeared. The cook was slurping something in the dining room with the two paying customers. No water refills. No tea refills (heck, no sweetener for my tea...). The rice was dry. The sashimi was minuscule, and the waitress was less attentive than a DMV clerk. I wouldn't give Shiki five stars either, but it's WAY better than this place, and worth the extra five minute drive. read more

I just came here for the first time - a place in walking distance from me. I got two things. Results: * Tonkatsu Donburi - Amazing! Lots of sauce, lots of onions. Delicious * Salmon Nigiri - Not as great. Not bad, but not flavorful. I think the main problem was something wasn't great about the sushi rice. Along with those two orders came salad and miso. I liked the miso more than usual, and the salad was good too. Service was ok - they ran out when I forgot my jacket, so I can't complain about that. So I won't be coming here for fish, but I'll be returning for the cooked items! read more

This place change hands after Narita probably a few times, every since than going down to hill. Thats so bad that this part of Belmont has not a good sushi restaurant. Down there Sushi Monster is the best just a little far but for sure best in Belmont. Sushi Kuu , nothing special, rude staff , pricey, not tasty, so waste of money. Just moved into the area. Can't unpack fast enough to cook, so we walked into the local shipping center and decided to try out the local sushi place and hoped to find a local gem within walking distance. I eat Japanese food at least four times per week, so I was crossing my fingers. Decor and atmosphere were good. Food was above average. Service was not so good. When I asked about any possible choices for my two kids, I was told "Kids like edamame." Ok then, note to future self: Leave kids home next time, if there is a next time. The chicken teriyaki was rubbery and the sauce was weak. Salmon teri was much better. Sauce was the same though -- I don't want to insult anyone, but I immediately thought it came from a bottle. The rice was excellent -- maybe the best part of the meal. Side salad and miso were standard. The $40 sushi "omakase" plate was intriguing. Lots of very interesting sushi choices, beautifully presented, and very, very fresh. Was it worth the price? Perhaps. But it wasn't very filling. The wait for the check was exceptionally agonizing. In fact, it made me under tip as I had to walk up to the sushi chef to get my check and pay. At that point, he charged my card and with a bizarre stroke, explained to me that I have to sign the receipt. Gee, thanks for the guidance. Thanks, friend. My family has been coming to Sushi Kuu for a few months now and we always get friendly service, beautiful and fresh sushi, and delicious bento entrees. There is a lot of space but just a few tables which means comfortable dining but a longer wait if you come when this place is full. Someone commented that the prices are high here, but I have to disagree. I've been to Japanese restaurants all over Belmont and San Carlos, and I've spent on average about $20 less here than at other places...And I love my sashimi. read more

Great food at a reasonable price. I don't usually order Bento Boxes at Japanese restaurants, but I do here. At lunch, the 3 item Bento is $11.95 (2 item is $9.95). The beef short ribs are delicious. The mixed tempura is plentiful and tasty. The grilled calamari is yummy. read more

We have been eating here since they re-opened as Sushi Kuu. It's always been convenient, clean and family friendly. The wait staff is always friendly as well and the food is good, when people visit we bring them here. Unfortunately our last few visits have not been as good as before. I'm not sure if it's because business is picking up or due to all of the delivery orders, but the service has been slow and disorganized. During our last three visits parts of our order have been completely forgotten or incorrect when brought to the table. Sushi is brought out before appetizers, drinks go missing and they no longer serve oranges after the meal. Last time we finally had to get into the ordering line just so we could pay our bill, it took way too long to have our card taken by the waiter. There are many, many other good and great sushi restaurants in the area, I hope Sushi Kuu will review their current service standards and correct the problems. read more
