Started out with such potential...and then a big fail. Very good miso soup and excellent salad dressing. We ordered two bento box (two items) which were reasonably priced and the miso chicken. The tempura was well prepared and tasty. The steak, while average but edible, was served cold. The miso chicken and teriyaki chicken were really bad. The miso chicken, which was not masked by the teriyaki sauce, was inedible. It had a fake taste and a consistency unlike any fresh chicken I have ever eaten. Like that frozen, processed chicken you would find in a frozen or fast food teriyaki or chicken bowl. I suspect the chicken in both orders was frozen, then quickly thawed. Almost like boiled fish. I wasn't sure what to expect when I found out about this new sushi restaurant in Belmont. There weren't a lot of reviews on Yelp to refer to. Some of the photos suggested it might be an authentic traditional place serving impressive omakase. I took my chance. As soon as I walked into the restaurant I immediately checked out their white board. In this case, it was actually a colorful neon board. Half of the items listed are cooked food. Not a good sign, I told myself. When I was handed a menu full of cooked items and fusion rolls, I mentally prepared for a disappointment. My dinner actually turned out much better than expected. The omakase (more like a chef's special) featured some pretty decent cut of fish. Seasoned squid, kurodai, baby scallops, smoked salmon nigiri and some generous cut of chu toro, ocean trout, hamachi and escolar sashimi. My main complaint is their sushi rice. It has too much vinegar, a little too hard inside but too mushy outside. The nigiri was good otherwise. Second round we ordered some more nigiri and their miso black cod on the special board. Nigiri were still good. The black cod has nice moist and tender texture but I was not too fond of their miso sauce. Service was friendly enough. The restaurant is Chinese own. Not really authentic Japanese style but the sushi counter is clean and the fish is good. Sushi Kuu won't be my favorite sushi restaurant but it is not a bad choice of food if you are in this area. read more

Bento box - I wish I could choose the type of nigiri and sashimi type with the bento box. The chef's choice thing scares me a little. Nevertheless I was starving and in the mood for fresh fish. I went for the three item box with those two items and miso salmon. The chef took his cue from me and I got salmon sashimi which was fresh and so perfectly sliced with some fresh lemon. Then my largest piece of nigiri was more fresh salmon and an ebi and a small piece of what I think was hamachi. I was kind of hoping for a little more variety, but the salmon was practically swimming off my plate and having the contrast of the grilled with miso and raw was delicious. An enormous amount of fresh salmon and a couple Of other bites for the bargain price of $14.95. I didn't even get charged for tea. The miso soup was great and i love their salad dressing. Randomly came in this cute little restaurant, I believe it only opened less than two months or so, as you can tell many areas need to be improved and get together. Service was attentive, however, I felt they were a bit too attentive because they were lack of experiences (could've have done everything all at once). I'll give them credit for trying, at least they weren't just standing around and chatting; they are just new business, i'll give them some time to improve. After reading the reviews here, I decided not to order off from the menu. Sat by the sushi bar and let the Chef make the call. From our very brief conversation, the Chef caught our moods; he was knowledge, and knows what to send out and when to send out. He didn't send out any rolls (he listened to my preferences), chef picked sashimi and some of the hot food items. Out of all, I love love love the fresh sea urchin, buttery toro, hamachi kama, and the complimentary tuna tata that chef sent out. I also like how creative they are, using this sake crab dish and turned it into a udon dish towards the end of the meal. This restaurant gave me a different type of "wow" than Alinea, I won't say it blown me away; however, I love how they pay attention to you closely, notice their guests' like and dislike. Full disclosure, I'm a vegetarian with an egg allergy. Beyond that, Sushi Kuu seems to be pretty standard, and perhaps has a little less to offer a vegetarian than the standard sushi joint, although they do have a vegetarian Green Combo on the menu. (The "vegetable roll" they list is literally avocado and cucumber, just FYI.) Fellow food allergy sufferers beware, they don't list all of their rolls' ingredients on the menu. I was kind of suspicious to see a futo maki that didn't have eggs in it (it always does to my recollection), but it spelled pretty much everything else out on the menu except for the eggs, so I thought maybe it was my lucky day--nope :/ Thankfully, when it arrived and I told the waitress, they took it back and brought out another futo maki made without the egg, so they were pretty gracious about it, but I figure I should warn anyone who thinks maybe that's a vegan roll based on the description that it isn't. The sushi itself is just okay. I feel like the rice isn't quite right compared to other sushi places (maybe on the dry side), but otherwise everything looked fine. They had cooked options for the person in our group that didn't eat raw fish, and had plenty of selection for the rest. Service was fine, but the place was practically empty at 7pm on a Friday night, so when they accidentally brought my friend the wrong roll, it was odd that it took so long to get the right roll to her. Also, the table was oddly sticky on the pull-out leaf (we had a group of 5, so they pulled the leaves of the table up to make it round rather than square). All in all, not bad, but not great, either. I'm not opposed to returning, but I may opt to try another sushi place over this one in the future. read more

Get: Bento box lunch special! I randomly saw this place while getting gas and was hungry so I stopped in. Nice looking restaurant, pretty small. I got the lunch special bento box. 3 items for 9.95 and you get salad and miso! Salad had a delicious dressing but it was iceberg lettuce :( Miso was very tasty. Cali roll was small but pretty good. Tempura was tempura which is really hard to make bad. The chicken Katsu was pretty good. No fat and it had a tasty Katsu sauce. Overall a decent, filling meal for a really good price. Came to sushi kuu for the first time for dinner with my wife. Place is pretty nice, but not fancy. It fills up pretty fast and it gets kind of loud. Service is decent before the crowds, once it's busy you'll have to shoo other people so that you can get waiter's attention. Miso soup, dumplings, and seaweed salad were delicious. I usually don't order specialty roll, but wanted to try something new so I ordered lava and lion King rolls. Sushi rice was waaay overcooked and rolls seemed too wet. sauces were just overwhelming and left me feeling yucky. Overall the place is not bad, but I've had much better for a lot less. read more

I was at a training for a week in Belmont and walked into Sushi Kuu one day during a lunch break. As it was after 1 PM, the dining room was not busy, and I got seated right away. I enjoyed my experience so much, I came back the next day for lunch, too. On the 1st day, I ordered a 3-combination bento box with chicken teriyaki, beef short ribs and the mixed tempura. The teriyaki was cook perfectly, and the tempura had a nice mix of shrimp and vegetables. The short ribs were just OK, though. They were not as tender as I would normally like, though they did have nice sauce. The next day, I ordered the chirashi meal, since I was still full from lunch the day before (!) It had a nice mix of different seafood, including octopus (which was cooked well and not so tough) and large salmon eggs. Definitely a nice, lighter choice for a quick meal. The service was also excellent, as the wait staff was very attentive, refilling my tea frequently. Highly recommended! read more

Sushi was great, service was great the only thing super sketch about this place that probably many people won't know is that the mirror in the bathroom is a two way mirror!!!!!!! When I turned off the lights I saw a couch INSIDE OF THE MIRROR. Let alone there is only ONE bathroom, I also touched my finger against the reflection it didn't pass the mirror check. Wow! Visiting in town and went next door first and got the worst service. So I decided to try here. I was instantly greeted and sat which I appreciate. Drink order was taken immediately. My apps and food came out quickly. Prices were great but the food was even better! I love Sushi Kuu. Since they're very close to my house, I frequently order take out on Yelp. It's very easy and they always have my order ready early. I love their salmon sushi, rainbow dragon roll, and chicken udon especially. It all tastes delicious and high quality. My mom and I have wondered how they make their udon broth because it is absolutely heavenly and so comforting. I've eaten in the restaurant a few times and find their service to sometimes be a little clueless/slow but I'm not docking any stars for that because they're friendly and it's not very big so it's easy to flag them down. I have patience with the service because I can see how hard the staff and chefs are working to serve the customers. I actually sit and talk with them and get to know them. Other sushi places in Belmont are also nice, albeit, more expensive but I come to Sushi Kuu because it feels homey to me and I feel like I am part of their family. Frequently came here for sushi years ago when I lived close by and thought I'd stop in for lunch since I was in the neighborhood. I ordered the bento box with mixed tempura and miso chicken. It came with my two selections as well as rice, salad and miso soup. Soup and salad were standard and nothing stood out (good or bad). Tempura was fairly good, but dipping sauce had no flavor whatsoever. The miso chicken was awful. The texture was extremely off putting - rubbery and chewy. I tried a couple of pieces and gave up. This is my second time coming here and I'm still lovin' it. The food that is. The people are friendly too, but there's still room for improvement on the service. My mother and I usually sit by the sushi bar because we like our sashimi cut/prepared and passed straight to us by Jeffrey, the sushi guy/owner. (He's the one in glasses and usually at the center of the sushi bar.) Their cooked foods are good too! The squid tempura is crunchy outside and chewy inside; it also comes with two different dips. I don't know why people dislike this place so much.. maybe just bad experiences or the fact that people think its not authentic.. but I really enjoy it, so I'm happy I didn't listen to those other reviews. Every time I have come here it has been at dinner time, it is never very crowded, and we are sat and attended to quickly. My all time favorite thing on the menu is the Hawaiian Poki. It is so gooood. The only issue is consistency with how it is prepared. It always tastes the same but the first time we got it we had so much yummy melt in your mouth Tuna and the second time it was skimpy :-( but still delicious. Beer is well priced and the house white wine which is $5.50 is very good for the price. The rolls are good as well, I get the Lion King Roll and am never disappointed. My Boyfriend gets the Unagi Don every time we go. This is the only sushi place that we have been to ( and we go to a lot) that gives a huge portion size on Unagi. I am always amazed at how much is in the box. my only complaint is that they do not have a happy hour! I would eat here way WAY more if they did :-) read more
