After Sushi Mambo closed in Napa and re-opened in Calistoga we made the drive recently for a birthday, as it was the birthday girl's favorite restaurant. The food at Sushi Mambo in Calistoga is quite good, in fact better than I remember it being at the Napa location. I'd call it a California style sushi, meaning rather than an emphasis on nigiri and sashimi there's a very large selection of rolls and also a nice selection of dishes that incorporate sushi ingredients in interesting ways. I had the Great Balls of Fire, which are large rice balls stuffed with ahi, yellow fin and another fresh fish and then tempura fried and served with a spicy sauce, they were great. Also the Fungus Among Us was really good, again tempura fried and delicious. We had several rolls, all of which were delicious. There's a smaller selection of nigiri and it was also quite good. Service was prompt and considerate, though a little harried due to the restaurant being quite busy. The only negative was that we had a large party (8 people) and there was an issue with our reservation having not been properly taken, and unfortunately this resulted in us feeling like we were being rushed to leave to make room for another large group. The owner has contacted me about this and apologized, which is much appreciated. The restaurant is not a huge space and I can certainly see how having large parties one right after the other would create stress, hopefully this unusual situation won't happen again. Overall Sushi Mambo in Calistoga is an excellent choice for dinner and a refreshing change from the traditional "Napa Valley" food that's found in so many eateries here. read more

If I could give this restaurant 0 stars I would. This restaurant serves the worst Japanese food I have ever eaten. I ordered a bowl with chicken. The chicken was overcooked and inedible. The sauce on the rice was disgusting. My friend ordered the bento box and did not eat much of it because it was so bad. The service was terrible also. read more

Sushi Mambo was the only sushi bar in Napa in the '90s. Two earthquakes later in the City of Napa where his restaurant was destroyed, the owner decided it was a sign and relocated to Calistoga. The food is consistent, flavorful, and there are unique plates and rolls. Service is good but they are busy, which tells you something. In this Valley where wine is king, good Asian food is hard to find. Here is an exception and if you are looking for a casul change up on your Napa experience, this is a good stop. read more

I was so sad when Sushi Mambo closed in Napa. The sushi was always awesome and the service matched the food. We use to go about once a week, so I have been having sushi withdrawals ever since August 2014. Tonight was our second visit since they opened in Calistoga and the meal was wonderful as usual. Tried the Love Boats for the first time this evening; all I can say is that the dish was delicious and lovely to behold. Sushi Mambo has the best owners; very nice, friendly and thoughtful to their guests. The staff has always been attentive and quick. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere as well. Altogether, this dining experience is so worth the drive from Napa. I will definitely make my visits more frequent. read more

Ordered dinner to-go from here this weekend. The rolls are amazing. We had 5 different rolls and loved all of them. The fish was fresh and super yummy. We requested that the fish be sliced thin for the rolls, neither myself or my husband like super thick pieces in our rolls and they did exactly what we asked for. Overall the food was amazing and the girl on the phone taking our order was very nice and suggested some delicious sushi rolls. I definitely recommend trying this sushi restaurant next time your in the area. read more

The best sushi in the valley! Mambo used to be in Napa at a bigger location and when they were there they were good, but now they have a smaller location and don't have to go crazy filling double or triple the seats, the food has gotten way better! Jose and his brother Francisco are masters in the art of sushi. We go in usually once a month if not more sometimes! The prices are very reasonable, the sushi is high grade and fresh and I, not my girlfriend or any friends have ever walked out of here dissatisfied. Every member of staff makes you feel welcome. Do to all these reasons, sushi mambo is a local favorite that usually requires a reservation on the weekends and sometimes a few weekdays. But don't let that discourage you from calling them real quick and getting in! read more

Been here twice in the past month. Fish is okay, not fishy but also not a lot of flavor. Not for the hard core sushi lover. Rolls are recommended as they have more flavor than straight nigiri or sashimi. There isn't much north of Napa for great sushi... but there are so many other great restaurants to try. read more

This was simply the worst of all sushi I have ever had. The service was on par with how garbage the diner was. We ordered 2 rolls, and some nigiri. It took FOURTY FIVE minuts to get our food. As soon as we got it I knew it would be the same story for the check, I asked for it right away and WELL WELL WELL it took another 15 min to get it. An embarrassing amount of time to get what would be a TOTAL let down. The rolls were bland (CA to play it safe and a spicy roll) The fish was watery (frozen and thawed fast.) and nearly completely flavorless in everything we got. It tasted terrible and was expensive. Don't roll the dice on the sushi place. Maybe it was an off night but I kinda doubt it. I know it wasn't the first time they have heard their service is terrible, we were even warned about it but there was no way to be ready for this. If the food was good I can take a little heat off buuuut it was a total and complete abomination of sushi. Literally one of the worst dining experiences ive had. read more

We'll my wife and I on our aniversary decided to try this place out. It is a nice small place to go eat. We'll it was weird that it was a place that was mostly non Japanese at a Japanese restaurant. My wife had the chicken Ramen. It was less meat then expected. I decided to try the bento box. So I pick it with chicken and California roll. Unfortunately for the chicken teriyaki, it was really dry. I'm used to the chicken being moist and tender. I'll probably not order this one again. The waiter who was American,not Japanese, told me to try the mermaid. I would usually go for the dragon roll, since I like those. The mermaid turned out awesome. I would order that one again if I come back to visit Calistoga. We also tried the love boats. They were tasty. I recommend the love boat to try. read more

Best sushi in Calistoga! Might be the only sushi, but after eating here I'm not gonna bother to look elsewhere. Nice little gem in Calistoga. I went for lunch with my girlfriend around 3pm between wine tastings. We sat at the bar and watched the man behind the glass do his work. I always enjoy a good sushi chef who chats with customers while making sushi. We started off with miso soup which was fine. I don't think I've ever had a bad or great miso. But while we waited for our food the chef made us a cucumber and tuna salad. Very simple but fresh and delicious. My girlfriend got some oyster dish. It was delicious. I didn't pay much attention to it until I asked for a bite and she refused. Once I snagged a bite I saw why. It was delicious. I don't know what was in it and I can't find a menu online, but you have to try it. I got one of the lunch menu specials. Good sushi, packed right and a good amount of fish in the roll. I think we left with a bill of like $20? It was very reasonable considering what we served to us. I'll be back to eat on my next visit. read more

UPDATE: not an hour after I wrote my review I started to feel like I was dying. I was nauseous and overheated the rest for the rest of the day...and it wasn't hot out. One of my initial apprehensions was on the safe transport to a city this far inland and it seems this could be in question. Yes it was tasty and the service was good, but I don't enjoy paying to feel sick to my stomach. ------- I must admit, I was a little apprehensive to try Sushi Mambo for several reasons. I decided to give it a shot today - ordered the Saba-Daba-Doo. I arrived right at opening and was greeted immediately. I can't speak as to eat-in service but take out was very good. While it took 15 minutes to get my single roll, I was quite happy with the result. Only complaint about the roll is that it wouldn't hold together in chopsticks. Otherwise, tasty. Prices are a little high but I can imagine it's partially because of making sure the fish is safely transported safely this far inland. read more

My friend and I were looking for a sushi place to eat after wine tasting at the Castello di Amarosa. Mambo Sushi was less than 10 minutes away, and we weren't disappointed! We had their dinner bento box with chicken teriyaki and sashimi, and their rock n' roll sushi. The chicken in the bento box was a bit dry, but the sashimi was good, I would still recommend the bento box. The rock n' roll sushi was good as well, it tasted fresh. Servings were the right size in my opinion. Overall, not the best sushi I've ever had but definitely a good recommendation whenever you're in that area. read more

We ordered from Sushi Mambo and it was just the ticket! Someday we'll enjoy their pleasant patio on a quiet, walkable street, but we got take out and walked it back to our hotel. We ordered after 7:30, and were told we could pick up at 8:15, even though they closed at 8:00. We really appreciated being able to get some luscious food! The menu is interesting, extensive, and made it hard to choose. Crispy tofu salad: beautiful, tasty, creamy miso dressing on the side, large enough to share. The sushi rolls were beautifully prepared, large, and complex. There is also ramen, and pretty much something for everyone. The people were efficient, and gracious. We will be back! read more

I took my husband here because I had 2 co workers refer me to this place. we were seated right away. it's a small cozy restaurant with sushi bar. great service. we ordered the dynamite appetizer which is my favorite out of all the ones we ordered. The dynamite are scallops and mushrooms with sauce and it's baked. I had the side salad with miso dressing and my husband had the miso soup. I ordered the fungus among us that my co worker are telling me that it's the best. however, it wasn't all that for me. my husband had the mermaid and to him it was just plain..nothing special. read more

I'm in love with this place!! I just went for the first time yesterday and am literally already planning my next trip this week because it was just that good. My boyfriend and I eat a lot of sushi and I have to say that this is probably the best sushi I've had in a long time. The ingredients taste SO fresh and flavorful. Not to sound over dramatic but we literally found ourselves having to stop and eat really slow just to appreciate all the subtle flavors of the rolls... they were just really complex and beautifully done - props to the chef! The experience is actually making me question other sushi restaurants that were my previous favorites because Mambo just raised the bar big time. Clearly the food quality is tops. You can definitely taste the difference and I so appreciate them investing in quality ingredients... And at very reasonable prices! The staff was delightful. Even the chefs were smiling at us and the owner (or manager?) was so friendly. Sake was a great deal and fabulous. Gluten-free beer? Awesome. I'm wondering if they have a good happy hour and/or take-out... if so this place would be 110% amazing for me. Haven't found a website for them yet with the menu & details so I'm not sure but can't wait to support them more either way. I have no doubt they're going to be very successful in town. I've been to Calistoga many times, tonight we decided we would order sushi back to the room to end off the night with a good note. Welp, NO that's not how it ended. I was highly disappointed with everything that we ordered. We ordered a bento box the chicken was dry, the rice was hard and the lettuce in the salad looked old. We also ordered a dragon roll that literally fell apart. Lastly we ordered a baked scallop roll and let me tell you that WAS NOT a baked roll it was the nastiest thing that I've ever tried. I hate to give bad reviews but when it's bad I just gotta save people from wasting their money!!!! read more

Their rolls are delicious, their ramen is decent for a place in Calistoga and I definitely would prefer dining here than buying something at a winery or overpriced Napa restaurants. We wandered in at about 8:30 on Valentine's Day with no reservation, and we were seated promptly. Major score! We were worried no one would be able to accommodate us on such a busy day, during such a busy weekend. And the fact that they WERE able to seat us almost seemed worrisome (as backwards as that sounds). But there was absolutely nothing to be worried about. Roll selection was varied and interesting. Fish was fresh and flavorful. Wine selection was good and pours were solid. Restaurant was clean and inviting. My favorite part was that the owner was our server. She was SO sweet and sincere and it just made the whole experience 100x more enjoyable. She told us little anecdotes about the area and her connections to the wines they serve, which made ordering fun. She was incredibly down to earth and smiley, and not in a way that felt fake at all. In fact, the whole waitstaff was really nice and attentive. Lots of goodbyes and thank yous when we left. Overall, really great experience. Would definitely go again. It's one of those places that you go to and then immediately fear that it will make you less adventurous and willing to try other places because you're always going to want to return. read more

Love the sushi here! Really good for a reasonable price. Although the outdoor seating area needs a big upgrade. I was a little disappointed in the service. Very friendly and nice but they only came out a couple times to check on our party of seven plus our dog. Most places I've been where I've brought my dog they've accommodated him with at least a water bowl. Our tables were wobbly and no one came out to turn on the heaters so I had to do so myself. Other than that food was great! Been going to sushi mambo for over 17years when it used to be across from Mervin's next to the drug store. read more

Brought him a seaweed salad with taco instead of poke, as he had asked. Forgot my cucumber salad completely. Noticed a pungeant propane smell while our food was supposedly being prepared. And, my supercalifragilistic roll which was $14.50, was extremely bland and tasted only of rice. Our stay lasted almost an hour and 30 mins for a simple soup, salad, and single roll, each. I've been here before and loved it. Hopefully it was just an off day. Unless being the only sushi restaurant in miles warrants them to run business this way. read more

Never again! I've been coming here since they were in Napa. I was in Calistoga and wanted sushi there isn't another sushi restaurant in Calistoga. Driving to Napa seemed like a hassle. (I stood corrected but yes next time I will drive to Napa instead). It took them 1 HOUR to bring out one roll. The restaurant was pretty empty. The roll was both hot and cold (?!) warm tempura but cold rice. The second roll came out later and we didn't even touch it. We planned to order more food at this point decided not to. No one asked how our dinner was. $40 down the drain. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. read more

Love this little restaurant! Checked into our B&B a little late and this place was right across the street so we decided to give it a try. The service was great and the food was good. I ordered the "Lovester" Sushi Roll which was really good and stuffed with real lobster, shrimp and crab and then topped with a hearty portion of sashimi. We also tried the lychee infused Sake which was really good! Unfortunately I have to give 4 stars only because the miso soup and hot tea wasn't as hot as it should be. But we still enjoyed our dinner and will definitely be back if we're ever in the area! read more
