Sushi Man has gone downhill recently. The last two times that my girlfriend and I have ordered from here we have been very disappointed with the quality of sushi. The sushi is massive and falling apart. Both my girlfriend and I love eel, but when you get an entire bit of eel on top of your sushi that is the size of your tongue it becomes less appealing. The size of the sushi also makes it hard to manage when using chopsticks. The ingredients no longer seem high quality which detracts from the taste. We would be alright with the quality if we were eating at a second rate sushi joint, but when you are paying $60 for 5 rolls you expect much more. read more

I got a delivery today from sushi man, I ordered the lunch spicy roll combo box (one spicy salmon roll, one spicy yellowtail roll, one spicy tuna roll), upon opening the package I saw that other than the tuna the other two rolls were greyish brown in color, I did some rearranging to make room for soy sauce and while doing so every piece I touched completely fell apart. Despite the off-putting appearance I made the mistake of allowing the sushi to pass my lips into my mouth. This was inedible, extremely fishy and funky. I nearly puked on myself. Sushi man it's really nice and informative person (what I noticed) but the owner such a aggressively talking Chinese lady(possible owner). Sushi man offered multiple varieties of his own hand made sashimi but she cuts him off and says at this time she don't want to offer to clients that (all sashimi was on the menu at that day). She says to me "I'm the boss and make decisions" and went back to the kitchen... :-0. Sushi man still apologized me about this experience with his owner. My number 1 stop to get sushi in Boston area. Tiny restaurant can seat no more than 20 people, but really like those Japanese restaurant in Tokyo, Japan. Has a great selection of sushi, both raw and cooked. There are two Sushi chefs, of whom one is Chinese and the other is Japanese. Both are very nice. Other than Sushi, they also serve ramen and rice bowl. Everything is freshly prepared. Provide hot towel and Japanese snake at the beginning and fresh fruit at the end. Parking is right outside. Great all around sushi place. My boyfriend and I treat this as our go-to place for sushi cravings. The place is owned by a couple, so you get a really personable touch to everything. The place is a bit small though so it's probably not a great place to go if you have a party of more than 4, but they do get a lot of take out orders! I love their makis, and the prices are reasonable. Their beef tataki is also really good. Quite tasty, felt quite authentic. Went with a friend and we each got a miso soup, we got the fried tofu, and the sushi and maki for two. The soup was average (can't go wrong with miso soup). The fried tofu appetizer was quite tasty. It came with 6 pieces of tofu and a tasty sauce (mildly sweet, quite interesting). The sushi and maki (the meat of our meal) were phenomenal. The plate came with a spicy tuna roll (very well done, not too saucy which is usually the case), a california roll (pretty standard), and an eel roll (quite tasty!) Our maki was an assortment including standard tuna/yellowfish/salmon/eel/squid, and more exciting scallop, clam, white tuna. It was all quite tasty and I'd definately go back. Price was reasonable for sushi (bill was about 70 bucks for the two of us not including tip) We got there right when it opened and were pretty much the only people there, though there seemed to be a good number of take out orders. This is the place to go for exceptional sushi. I live around the corner from it and its definitely better than waiting at Oishi's down the road. The first time I went, I was blown away by the white hamachi that he served whenever he could get it. Another plus is that Lucy and Isao, the owners, used to work at Gyuhama's back in the days when that was the place to be for sushi. Ok... it's taken me more than a year to remember to write this review, but I had perhaps the most awful experience with Sushi Man anyone could ever have. Yes, my experience was worse than yours, naysayer, I guarantee it. Let's begin... My boyfriend and I were residents of Newton. We wanted some solid sushi that was close by, and we decided on four different rolls at Sushi Man. I can barely recall what they were, but all of them were sloppily put together, and the fish tasted funny. The scallop roll was slimy, and since it was all so expensive, I was very disappointed. I decided I would politely call the restaurant, and explain that our rolls were falling apart and the fish tasted strange, and would they please give us our money back. I realized this was an awkward situation, so I spoke gingerly and acknowledged it was probably because they were so busy, and I'm sure this wasn't always the case! I was told by a confused man, ok, yes we'll give you a refund. I thanked him profusely and hung up the phone. I then received a call back, this time from a woman, who was clearly the manager. I picked up and said hello. She greeted me with YELLING at the top of her lungs. She said I was trying to cheat her out of paying, and that I was a 'thief' and I probably ate it all and didn't want to pay. I calmly explained that wasn't the case, and I was sorry. She then demanded that I BRING THE SUSHI BACK. I told her I'd rather not drive back to the restaurant, and that I had unfortunately thrown it away already. She said, and I quote, "WHAT IS YOUR ADDRESS, I WILL LOOK IN YOUR TRASH!?" I hesitated, because... well would you want this woman to come to your house? I told her I didn't want her to come to our house, though truthfully the sushi was sitting in our trash, as I explained. She demanded I BRING IN MY TRASH WITH THE SUSHI IN IT BACK TO THE RESTAURANT. At that point, I thought, ya know what., if this is how she wants to do business, then OK, let's do this. We drove back, I marched in with my trash bag. (Many customers commented how gross this was, and I vocally agreed and told them that THE MANAGER told me to bring it in, and I apologized for interrupting their dinner). I found her, and she insisted the host go through my trash. I told her that he should not have to do this, if she was the one challenging me. She found the sushi but told me that I was "A BAD PERSON," and that she would "REMEMBER MY FACE, AND HOPE SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED." I got my money back... and walked out shaking with rage and disbelief. I could not believe what had just happened. If there was an option for negative stars, I would choose it. A horrible, cruel and vindictive woman runs this restaurant and NO ONE should give them their patronage even if their sushi improves! read more

One of my favorite simple sushi places that my family and I love to come to. The service is always great, and we usually get some edamame thrown in. Service is very friendly, attentive and quick. The place is very small, but we always manage to get a seat for 5 (including 3 kids). We also get take outs and platters for party. They have a salmon, tuna, eel or california roll platter - 30 pieces for $30 - it's a great option for parties, by getting one of each. There are Japanese bottled teas and drinks. as well as frozen dessert (like mochi) in the freezer in the front room. The kids love the udon noodles (yaki or soup based). read more

I have been twice so far. As others have said, this place has awesome value - huge portions at affordable prices. Their unagi with rice is well worth it! Rolls are satisfying - certainly above average, and of surprising quality considering the value. The staff is very accommodating. I appreciated their attentiveness and recommendations. There were three people working there, and all three had interacted with our table at some point during the meal. Unfortunately, the Philadelphia roll tasted just like a dirty old rag smells. Wtf! so being that the dirty old rag roll was packaged together with another one, I could not eat any of them. Not the freshest sushi in the area. Oishii down the street in Chestnut Hill is much, much better... but similarly priced. They often hand you a warm towel with a mildew smell. The fish is not particularly fresh. The miso soup is good. They do a nice house salad where they add asparagus and plenty of nice vegetables. I have tried the baby octopus a few times, and it is very good. I would avoid the sashimi. The location is very convenient, right on route 9 westbound. The parking is easy and free. It's alright, and not bad if you're in a pinch. The age dashi tofu is good and you get 3 shrimp with the tempura udon (rather uncommon!). However, the sushi is cut strangely (very large pieces, thick, and with fibers/film still on that make biting it impossible. Not that you should have to bite a piece of sushi but when it's this large....) Also the rice didn't hold together and the wasabi was all over the place. This unpretentious-looking place, a white stand-alone beside a strip mall, was easily ignored by myself for many times passing by westbound on busy Rte. 9. This place has a great traditional Japanese atmosphere and the girl serving us was very friendly and helpful. I had the salmon curry and it was a very large portion and great! There are a lot of cool specials listed in the place that aren't listed on the take-out menu, so I suggest if you're ordering takeout maybe going in and taking a look before ordering.
