I am proud to say that Sushi Mike's is the first restaurant I've ever ate at based on Yelp's recommendation. My family wanted to try a new place for lunch, so we hopped in my dad's car and drove down to Dobb's Ferry for some sushi. Like many other reviewers, we were a bit surprised at first to see just how small the restaurant is. There honestly couldn't have been more than 15 tables in the place (and that might even be an exaggeration). What was a bit more annoying was that the 8 or so occupied tables were all adjacent to one another -- the two ladies at the table next to me were so close that without trying, I could hear virtually whatever they said. Despite the size, though, the restaurant is well decorated, with some pretty murals on the walls and exotic fish to help make the place feel a bit nicer. The food, however, was an entirely different story. To start, we ordered edamame and vegetable gyozas. The edamame tasted fine (it's pretty hard to do anything with that), but the gyozas were incredible. They had this nice firmness to their edges which I haven't seen in gyozas before, although I admittedly don't eat at sushi restaurants all that much now that I live in St. Louis most of the year. For my main course, I got two specialty rolls -- "Salmon Fever" and "Fantastic". They were prepared very nicely, with two even rows for the different rolls and a nice drizzle of what I believe to have been hoisin sauce on the Salmon Fever roll. As for the quality of the food, it was incredible. The Salmon Fever roll is exactly what its name implies; if I remember correctly, it had regular salmon, salmon tempura, spicy salmon, and salmon roe on it. The fish was incredibly fresh and I enjoyed it, despite not being a huge fan of spicy salmon. The Fantastic roll was nothing short of fantastic as well; the avocado was incredibly fresh and although I can't remember exactly what types of fish were in it, I can say that everything tasted great and I enjoyed it tremendously. Our service was a bit weak, but it was our waitresses's first day so I won't hold it against them (plus my family can be a bit difficult at times). Basically, she was unsure as to whether or not the chef could cook certain things off of the menu (they did plain steamed chicken and broccoli for my little brother, but wouldn't do sesame noodles for my other brother) and didn't do a great job of explaining the difference between soba and udon noodles. Beyond that, though, she did a great job and I'm sure she'll get better as time goes on. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch at Sushi Mike's. While I don't think I'll be making the 25 minute drive down to Dobbs Ferry in the near future, I can't wait to eat there again. If you're in the area, be sure to check this place out. read more

Second time at Sushi Mike's This was not fun or appetizing ! Tekka Don was very poor , not sashimi on rice it was like sushi pieces thrown on top of rice. Sushi Mike's, you have my sushi loving heart. When you want badass sushi in the Westchester area, it doesn't get any better than this. My god the rolls are to die for. Everything from the soft shell crab to the yellow fin is exceptional. Warning: If you get specialty rolls and you have a small mouth, good luck. You may need to eat each piece in 2 or more bites, that's how big the rolls are. Go here, and say hi to Sushi Mike. Have eaten here about half a dozen times and my opinion has remained unchanged. Great sushi but not worth the expense UNLESS you get the 10 lunch special. Otherwise, the food is overly expensive for inadequately sized portions. Will get sushi from other places in the future. read more

Incredibly disappointed with Sushi Mike's-- am a Dobbs resident and a longtime fan. Ordered online tonight and waited a full 40 minutes to pick up-- when I got there, I found that there was a line about 10 people long, and the person at the front said that he'd been there for 45 minutes, with no food. Furthermore, the waitresses were rude and dismissive, not at all understanding of the frustration of everybody standing in line. I asked if maybe one of the many to go bags ready on the cart was for any one of us in line, and one of them responded "no. Now wait your turn." As I said, have had years of good experiences with Sushi Mike's, but it's such a disappointment to be treated the way I was tonight. Edit: Mike personally reached out to apologize. Big fan of their French Dynamite roll. Otherwise, though once 'trendy' this is basically a fast food sushi spot. Rolls often come with too much rice and the rice is a mushy consistency. Creative and large menu and a very nice and friendly owner. Fast service is also a plus. Much better than the sushi places in either direction down the street. We order from them once every 2 weeks or so and some days we eat in. The kids love the sweet potato roll and chicken teriyaki. Everything is very fresh and made to order from kitchen and sushi bar. Ordered through grub hub and they made the driver wait an hour for my food and repeatedly told him to cancel. I called to follow up and they were so nasty to me. I finally received my food after two hours and it was disgusting. It went straight in the garbage because I thought I would get food poisoning. Although I've been here twice, I can't speak for the sushi-- I had non-sushi lunch specials both times. The katsu curry comes to mind. It was pretty good, but I was disappointed by that it didn't meet the hype that my fellow yelpers built up. So first time I went here a co-worker brought me because we both had been dying for good sushi. We went in and it was pretty dead and the waitresses were kind of in that zone you get in when a lunch rush has passed you are waiting for the dinner buzz. The food was pretty tasty. We got a few things here and there. Then we came back with a group of friends. Lord have MERCY! The service was a lot better and nicer and also we got big plates to share amongst each other. The out of this world roll was out of this world!! After dinner we were debating on ordering dessert but I'm glad we did. We got tempura friend ice cream and tempura fried cheesecake... Sushi Mike's has to be one of the best sushi and Japanese restaurants in Westchester. I have been dining here with my family for years. The food is exceptional offering both traditional Japanese fare and some more trendy special rolls. It can get a little busy on weekends and is a rather small but lively place to eat. The decor is ocean themed featuring a jazzy underwater scene which is always fun to look at. The service is fast and courteous. The staff is always upbeat and friendly without being an annoyance. They offer take out as an option which is great but I really really wish they would deliver just because the food is so good! This is a great restaurant for delicious sushi and Japanese food in a more fun and less rigid setting without sacrificing quality and taste. I will continue to return to Sushi Mike's for years to come. read more

Who knew that this unsuspecting restaurant in Dobbs Ferry would have some of my favorite sushi ever? I have been taken to this place multiple times by my relatives who live in the area and we always ask Mike to prepare us a random sushi boat based on our favorite fishes. This place was such a welcome surprise. It's small and has some of the most of original/delicious rolls I've ever had for the price, hands down. The best rolls are: S&S (tuna, avocado, fresh salmon, 5 different kinds of caviar, seaweed salad), best of the best roll (spicy yellow tail, avocado roll), and the out of control roll (avocado, eel). A great sushi restaurant for those that don't know good sushi. Sorry but its just okay. Now I must admit that this is the only sushi restaurant I have have ever been to outside of California but its just not that good. The interaction with the sushi chef is not there, the menu is vanilla, and the sushi to rice ratio of the nigiri off. Go here if you are new to sushi, or if you consider California Rolls, Tempura, Teriyaki Chicken and other MacSushi as fine sushi. Otherwise keep driving. read more

i very, very much wanted to like, no LOVE sushi mike's. the reviews i read here bolstered my confidence that finally, a semi-decent sushi joint could be found in westchester. that plus, well, with a 10-month old infant, my husband and i don't get out to dinners alone anymore. so, one fine saturday evening, we decided to give sushi mike's a whirl.. and decided to ignore the bad reivews. alas. all those reviewers know their sushi and know what they are talking about. the white tuna carpaccio came in olive oil which completely destroyed the appetizer. the olive oil overpowered the tuna to the extent in which one could not taste the tuna nor how fresh (or how not fresh) it was. since when did OLIVE OIL have a place in japanese cuisine?? next, our rolls and sushi came. we noticed right away that the consistency of the rice was overly sticky and mushy at the same time. as a sushi eater for over a dozen years, i've never had rice that managed to be both; usually, poorly made sushi rice is either one or the other. to have both requires a special degree of being effed up. finally, supposedly mike's is known for their specialty rolls so we ordered the american hero, the mt. fuji, out of control, and fuzzy yellow tail. all four rolls were bland, and nonspecific in taste (again, probably secondary to the rice). disappointing is a mild adjective to describe our experience at mike's. even more so is the fact that my next date night is... not in sight. but when it does appear, i will, assuredly NOT being returning to mike's. read more

Truly love this place. Owner's a gentleman and so are the chefs; Eddie's the man and will do you right if you want awesome omakase. More importantly, the food is great. I love sushi, I get it all the time and I'm quick to bust balls--Sushi Mike's is where it's at. Don't pay any attention to the haters. I see some people complaining about the price. It might be a little more expensive than some other places (of equal caliber), but I'd happily pay the couple extra bucks for the quality. They clearly seek out the goods--the fish is always fresh and they even have rare and cool selections you will seldom see elsewhere. Seriously, get the omakase or ask someone behind the sushi counter what's fresh, rare and good. They're super friendly and accommodating and will point you in the right direction. I love nigiri and sashimi and this place makes a killer 'sushi deluxe'. No piece of fish is alike; they don't give you three pieces of salmon, three pieces of tuna and a bunch of other shitty pieces like most places. Every piece of fish is different and the deluxe is called that because it is in fact deluxe. I really can't recommend this place enough. It is a little expensive (you get what you pay for) and it does get super packed on Fridays and weekends, so make sure you have a reservation. read more

Best sushi place I have gone to in a long time. Everything is fresh and made to order, their house rolls are creative and tasty! I love the underwater/mermaid theme painted on the walls, and when the weather is nice you can sit outside. After several visits, I've concluded that this place isn't all it's hyped up to be. First off, I'll say that in about 30 take out orders, I became sick and threw up twice. I have no food allergies, and this has never happened before with other japanese restaurants or with my new favorite (sushi niji). Everyone raves about how fresh everything is; however, with most of the chef special rolls and other creations, things arrive so slathered in thick, rich sauces that I don't see how anyone could really analyze the fish. Sushi Mike himself is also a bit rude at times. I know people who have been falsely accused of using fake IDs in the restaurant; who were then mocked publicly. I also know of someone who had a tylenol on their table, which a waiter grabbed, ran to mike with, and said loudly to them, "we don't do drugs here." He is no scholar on sushi--he previously was the sushi guy at Red-Heads on Executive Blvd in Yonkers before it became Bennigans. Again, it's just never lived up to its hype. A lot of the people who rave about this place never frequented japanese food beforehand either, so while they may be impressed, they have yet to experience several places. I've brought die-hard Mike's fans elsewhere; and they admit that the actual food (maybe not the ambiance) is better at some of my choices. read more

When I'm visiting my family, I don't like to venture off too far and this is place is close enough to my parents that you don't feel like you're going out of your way for only 'okay food.' The quality is what one would expect from a 4-star restaurant. They clearly care about customer satisfaction and repeat business and its probably better sushi than you'll find in Westchester therefore the prices are actually reasonable so you wont feel ripped off. I stick to what I like and that's anything with tuna or eel that can be garnished with wasabi. The combos are more than I would like to pay for (but that's besides the point. Everyone's always looking for a deal.) My favorite thing to get - and I consider it a splurge is the spicy tuna tartar. I think quail eggs - even if they're raw on top of raw fish- and lucky for me, they've always done it right and I've never had to worry about anything. I consider it a splurge since the size doesn't really scream out "great deal" but you should know that when you're eating Japanese food- its more about quality than quantity. The service is decent, you're not gonna leave pissed off but you'll at least get what you need- nothing more, nothing less. read more

This place just isn't what it used to be. I went it for lunch with my son and at one point we were the only customers there. Even with that, our service was so bad. No one came to check on us, no one asked if we needed refills, no one cleared off our table - NOTHING. As a matter of fact, I had to send my 4 year old to go get a waitress to order his ice cream ($4.50, small and not good). She wouldn't even get up to tell me what they offered she shouted it out to me and my son would repeat them back! Then, I asked for my food to be wrapped up and I realized when I got home that she threw half of it out. Pathetic and a waste of money. Too bad, used to be good way back when. read more
