I really don't know what the hype is about this place, my boyfriend and I came here for the third time and I couldn't be more grossed out. The food is decent, nothing spectacular at all. The menus are dirty, obviously have never been cleaned. The decor is extremely outdated, with mermaids on the wall, I think the feel is supposed to be under the sea or something of the sort. Carpet is old and worn.. beware before you make the trip here. The place is dirty, when I first walked in waiting for my boyfriend to park, all the waitresses were sitting at the front table stuffing their faces, took one glance at me without even acknowledging me and than continued to stuff food into their mouths. Meanwhile, there were three other tables with customers dining in the restaurant while they are sitting their socializing like there were no customers. When my bf entered, the woman got up (still chewing grotesquely) and sat us. SKEEVE.. I'm sorry but that is completely unacceptable in a restaurant where I'm paying money. Second, after we ordered our waitress proceeds to clean the tables and walls with windex, while we are at the tables eating our appetizers. Sushi Mikes is VERY small.. is it necessary to clean the walls while your customers are dining? A few of the waitresses had no couth whatsoever, literally talking so loud to one another in their native language from one side of the restaurant to the other. That made me feel completely uncomfortable. The final straw that completely grossed me out is when I seen a waitress put her fingers in her mouth to pick her teeth, and than continue serving. that's filthy. I couldn't put another thing in my mouth, nor did I want to drink my semi decent green tea after that. Than to boot.. we see 3 or 4 chefs come out from the back with their gloves STILL ON, Go outside, smoke cigarettes, and come back in with the filthy gloves still on. I mean really.. this place has atrocious etiquette. Also, bathrooms are so tiny and not well cleaned at all. It just makes your dining experience unpleasurable when your table is literally 2 feet from the bathroom door. I applaud them for trying to distract customers from noticing the bathrooms by putting up what looks like to be fake bamboo, but it just does not work. I feel like this is a very harsh review, but this isn't the first time we have had an experience like this at Sushi Mikes and I don't see them making an effort to make even the slightest change for the better in their establishment. There are many other places in the area for good sushi.. save your money and your time. Sushi Mikes is not a good establishment in my opinion and really need to get their act together. I've been to tons of sushi places, both in the US (including 15 East and sushi Yasuda in NYC) and also Japan multiple times (Tokyo, Hakone...) as well. I think I have a feel for what is good sushi. Sushi Mike is definitely a very good place for sushi, the best for the area, undoubtedly deserving five stars. The owner seems very personable and the sushi - most important - is fresh, with melt in the mouth consistency and the proper ratio of rice (which means not too much of it) to fish and generally speaking a pretty good attention to detail. While the name and decor don't seem all that authentic, the food makes up for it. Hands down the best sushi in the area, and the classical music and underwater musical fish mural add to the charm. The fish is fresh and the menu is huge-- I'm still working my way through it. Sushi Mike's definitely demonstrates good quality fish executed extremely well. I came here with a co-worker for a quick sushi lunch. We ordered the lunch roll combination (3 rolls) and they were extremely satisfying and tasty. Service was great and price was about right. I'd give this place a 4.5 if I could but I can't and I feel coming here for dinner would be a better metric. I am definitely coming back here for dinner! what we ate: combo A, combo B came here based on a recommendation from a friend combined with a shockingly high zagat food score of 26 - sign us up! the space is very casual and quite suburban / family based (jeopardy was on the tv at the bar - score). service was attentive and very quick. we were in and out in 35 minutes which worked for us that night but at times could feel rushed. the menu is huge so deciding what to order was going to be challenging. until we found the sampler combos which basically between the 2, gave us 1/2 roll portions of 7 of their specialty rolls + soup and salad to start. perfect! we also order pork gyozas which were really good! overall we liked all the rolls, though some were hard to distinguish from one another. we really enjoyed our food. and for $30 a person you cant beat this for a large sushi dinner. did it earn a 26 zagat score in our eyes... no way. but it was tasty and i would come back when in the area anytime! read more

We (me and my wife) stopped here last night for the first time - we had heard about the place so many good things. We normally eat at the Cookery and the Parlor in Dobbs Ferry. In a nutshell: terrible. We arrived at 9:15pm - the place was almost empty (2 other tables) and the entire staff were seating near the sushi bar smoking cigarette and eating. It looked like a scene from an asian social club on grand theft auto... The waitress was nice but she started to rush us as we sat down - after ordering our soup and appetizers - as we started eating - she came back telling us that the kitchen was closing and that we had to order asap. I am sorry buddy but the last thing I need and the end of a long day at work - as I am spending $100 - is to be rushed at 9:25 on a Thursday night? Then the cleanliness of the place: terrible. Our glass table in the reflection of the lighting appropriate for a sex dungeon in Amsterdam, was covered with sticky stuff - which we tried to clean by ourselves (we felt that we had to do it or we might not have enough time to finish our food). The food: below average. The sushi were soggy - the tempura was cold and mushy. The miso soup was lukewarm as the shumai and gyoza. The rice on the sushi rolls was overcooked - and many of the rolls were coming apart as we tried to eat them. BTW when I normally order shumai (which are supposed to be steamed) it takes about 5-10 minutes. After we order them - they were right on the table - It seems that the law of physics cease to exist in sushi mike's kitchen... Not sure what people seems to like about this place - I guess it is cheap. As they rush us out spraying Windex on adjacent tables, I looked at the staff continuing to smoke and eat watching TV and I said loudly "good luck." I haven't ordered from this restaurant for years because I usually order from sushi Niji. I loved the miso soup from here in the past so I decided to try it again. I have to say that the rolls I ordered were very large in size. I really liked the spicy shrimp roll, it's had actual chunks of shrimp in it where other restaurants have it chopped up. I lived in Dobbs Ferry for many years, and I still go back for Sushi Mike's. My wife says "this is how it's done" about this place. In Dobbs, there's a glut of sushi counters. Sushi Niji is fine, but doesn't have that over-the-top quality that you get here. I generally get take-out because the restaurant is always slammed when it's open, especially on weekends (of course). Filled with diners, who are elbow-to-elbow in the cramped quarters, listening to smooth jazz and awkwardly staring at the weird mermaid mural. There are two tables outside for diners Sushi Mike himself is a terrific host, and the entire staff have always been pleasant. The sushi chefs often will greet you from across the room. Why not five stars? As good as this place is, I've still had better in port cities on the West Coast. read more

I'm a huge Japanese food fanatic and have tried countless restaurants and I seem to always resort to come back to the place I grew up going to. In terms of ambiance, you definitely feel like you are crammed into a small NYC sushi place. The lines tend to get long especially on Friday and Saturday nights, so be prepared to wait, but the wait and the crowdedness is definitely worth it! The service is fantastic. I never had any issue with it in the 10 years I've gone here. Even when there are tons and tons of people, you never will have to wait for your waitress as all of the servers pretty much assist one another. They also are very good with alterations in orders. The sushi itself is good but I LOVE their beef teriyaki! It is the BEST out there. The sauce they use to saute it in is delicious alongside the onions tastes phenomenal. Also, their mochi is really good to eat afterwards. It is not too filling but at the same time, not too light. This is a an unassuming sort of sushi place owned by Chinese people. I presume the guy who came out to greet everyone is Sushi Mike. We got three of their special rolls, and warning - they are really large. While the rolls aren't very authentic, they are very good. My beef with the place (and minus one star): the rolls are too fat, and loosely packed! It's hard to eat tasty creations when they fall apart so easily and must be eaten in two or more bites. That's not how sushi is supposed to be! Also the Salmon Fever Roll is a little too unfocused - you just can't appreciate the roe on top when there are a million other flavors obscuring it. I see a lot of mixed opinions for this restaurant. This is probably the best sushi place in Westchester. With that being said, there are better and cheaper places in Manhattan if you're willing to make the trek. I'd probably go back once a year to get my local sushi fix. I've tried most of the sushi on the menu. The fish is fairly fresh and flavorful, the rice is good, and the presentation is about what you would expect. The salmon was very buttery and practically melted in my mouth. They have some good oyster shooters too. The service is pretty decent, everything came quick and they haven't messed up an order yet. i am always a little afraid to try a new sushi place but took the advice of the reviewers here. The atmosphere is a bit cramped, dated and the funky carpet added nothing to the experience. The waitstaff could be considered rude but they hardly interact with you so they don't have much of a chance. The sushi rolls are good but a bit expensive. We had 5 rolls and one Coke and it came to $72 before tip. I would say the size of the portions were good. I would come back but if I didn't, I don't think I would miss this place. This place gets packed! I arrived on a Saturday night around 7 pm and thankfully I was able to squeeze myself into a tiny spot at the sushi bar. Luckily, I found myself next to a regular who is friendly with the sushi chefs. I felt perfectly at home sandwiched between two strangers and a table of five eight inches from my back. Had a glass of Argentian malbec, the spicy crab salad and followed it up with "the best of the best roll" which was even better than it sounds. I was in town on business recently and decided to get some takeout sushi. I was really impressed with this place and so happy I tried it. I had an Out of This World Roll, and it was seriously awesome. One of the best rolls I've had anywhere. I also had tuna sushi, and it was above average. The restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night, which I think speaks to how good this place is. I did have to wait a few minutes for my order because they'd mixed it up or something, and there was nowhere to stand without being in the way of all of the waitresses, so that was awkward, but I really didn't care once I had my delicious sushi. read more

Their American Hero roll is a personal favorite and ridiculously delicious. They get 4 stars from me because the place is pretty small and usually quite cramped. The food was great as well as unique; however, for a first time patron our waitress didn't give us even 5 minutes to look at the mini. Came by for dinner and saw all the great reviews and I was so excited! Until I walked in. They say us down without menus and it took them 30 minutes to even ask us for our drink order. They came back with flat sodas. We ordered our sushi and it was definitely not on my list of best sushi. The presentation was nice but the actual food was not appetizing. The waitresses never came by to check on us, only to rush us out. If there was so much urgency to get us out, at least have a clean restaurant. I am proud to say that Sushi Mike's is the first restaurant I've ever ate at based on Yelp's recommendation. My family wanted to try a new place for lunch, so we hopped in my dad's car and drove down to Dobb's Ferry for some sushi. Like many other reviewers, we were a bit surprised at first to see just how small the restaurant is. There honestly couldn't have been more than 15 tables in the place (and that might even be an exaggeration). What was a bit more annoying was that the 8 or so occupied tables were all adjacent to one another -- the two ladies at the table next to me were so close that without trying, I could hear virtually whatever they said. Despite the size, though, the restaurant is well decorated, with some pretty murals on the walls and exotic fish to help make the place feel a bit nicer. The food, however, was an entirely different story. To start, we ordered edamame and vegetable gyozas. The edamame tasted fine (it's pretty hard to do anything with that), but the gyozas were incredible. They had this nice firmness to their edges which I haven't seen in gyozas before, although I admittedly don't eat at sushi restaurants all that much now that I live in St. Louis most of the year. For my main course, I got two specialty rolls -- "Salmon Fever" and "Fantastic". They were prepared very nicely, with two even rows for the different rolls and a nice drizzle of what I believe to have been hoisin sauce on the Salmon Fever roll. As for the quality of the food, it was incredible. The Salmon Fever roll is exactly what its name implies; if I remember correctly, it had regular salmon, salmon tempura, spicy salmon, and salmon roe on it. The fish was incredibly fresh and I enjoyed it, despite not being a huge fan of spicy salmon. The Fantastic roll was nothing short of fantastic as well; the avocado was incredibly fresh and although I can't remember exactly what types of fish were in it, I can say that everything tasted great and I enjoyed it tremendously. Our service was a bit weak, but it was our waitresses's first day so I won't hold it against them (plus my family can be a bit difficult at times). Basically, she was unsure as to whether or not the chef could cook certain things off of the menu (they did plain steamed chicken and broccoli for my little brother, but wouldn't do sesame noodles for my other brother) and didn't do a great job of explaining the difference between soba and udon noodles. Beyond that, though, she did a great job and I'm sure she'll get better as time goes on. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch at Sushi Mike's. While I don't think I'll be making the 25 minute drive down to Dobbs Ferry in the near future, I can't wait to eat there again. If you're in the area, be sure to check this place out. read more
