We were there about 75 minutes before close and it was slim pickens on the belt, but the chef offered to make us anything we wanted. Service was once again excellent. Everything was a bit blah this go round. The veggie roll was pretty gross and filled with cabbage. The asparagus roll that I had on the previous visit is listed in the descriptions (which I didn't see last time) as having "eel sauce" in it (infuriating for a vegetarian!!). The Inari is still good and the avocado roll was great, but I'm not going to fill my belly on these two things. I ate here once after subbing at Union High School and I went on the one day of the week where their sushis are at discounted price. I got a lot of sushi for around $15. The food was not bad by any means, but I've just had so many better conveyer belt sushi spots in just the Vancouver area alone. No conveyer belt sushi place that I've been to has ever fitted the term "homemade" more than Sushi Moto. They don't really have that restaurant taste to them and tastes more like it was made in someone's house. I was really disappointed by the plate that had rice and crab inside of a tempura-fried jalapeño, because I'm usually a huge fan of tempura jalapeños and Gogo Sushi makes a really good and better version of it. I'd say this place is just slightly above "okay". OK, my sushi credentials include living in Japan for several years, enjoying authentic traditional sushi every chance I could. When I came home to the good 'ol USA I wanted to continue enjoying sushi, and have done so, but not always to great effect. From Salem to Seattle I've dined at every Sushi restaurant I have discovered, always using my sushi eating experience gained in Japan as a base line for comparison. Conveyor belt sushi places all seem about the same. Cheap, Americanized, little balls of insult laughing at you, knowing that you have no idea what sushi is. The three of these types of places closest to my residence are Sushi Hana, Sushi Land, and Sushi Moto. The best (of the worst) is Sushi Land. They usually have the most authentic variety and "sushi no skuri kata" or method of making sushi. That makes sense as they have a few actual Japanese employees. The worst is Sushi Hana... WAS sushi hana (after new management took them over and renamed the place). The worst is now Sushi Moto, and this is why: I dined there right after their grand opening, excited that another sushi place was opening up so close to me. The problem was that every piece of sushi was made with severely undercooked rice. As in a crunchy center, raw rice flavor, tooth breaking style of rice. Do they not check this? When I complained, the waitress had the cook take some out of the rice pot and taste it. He said it could be cooked a little more but it wasn't too bad. WHAT?! Sushi rice is not supposed to be hard and crunchy in the center! I didn't even have a chance to enjoy any part of this visit. I left with massive disappointment. Today I gave them a second chance since I was going to Flash Freeze Dreamery (excellent ice cream place in that same strip mall). I walked in and sat down with my wife and 11 year old daughter. There were dried up stains of some kind on the counter under the containers of soy sauce and ginger. Eww? The counter is black with lots of reflective sparkly flakes in it. I believe this is to camouflage any debris or dirt, and if not for that purpose, it camouflages and hides debris and dirt very well, which you don't want if you are trying to keep a place that serves raw fish, clean! We were the only people there, but there was a belt full of sushi. On that belt there was no nigiri (simple rice ball with fish on top) at all. It was all roll sushi. OK, fine, I'll try some of their rolls and order some salmon nigiri from the cook. The salmon pieces applied to my nigiri were pretty darn small, and not cut how a sushi chef is supposed to cut the fish. There is a direction you cut against the marbling in the meat so that you get a decent portion of fat (flavor) in each piece. You also don't cut the meat in the shape of a lego block, and that's how I got it. A stiff, dry and grainy lego block. /sadface. The rice was cooked better, but was very bland and lacked that distinguished sweet vinegary flavor, and was a bit dry. /sadface. I tried several species of "maki" (roll sushi). What is up with all this deep fried McDonnald's fry style sushi stuff? Fully half of everything on that belt was deep fried mystery sushi. The only thing deep fried that belongs in a sushi restaurant should be tempura. /sadface. I waited and waited for a plate to come by that looked appetizing. The problem was that every plate of sushi there was slathered in some variety of mayonnaise based sauce for some reason. Spicy sauce, BBQ sauce (really?), some sort of green stuff I couldn't identify, and straight mayonnaise. Why are they drowning everything in sauces? What are they hiding under all that? No seriously what's in there, because I looked and I couldn't identify many of the ingredients. I think one had fried pork, or possibly "kamaboko" (fish cake) that tasted like bacon. WTF? I almost blurt this out loud. OK. Time for my ultimate test for rating a sushi place. I ordered some Ikura sushi (Salmon Roe). Surprisingly, the cook had it! Fresh Ikura is one of my favorites. I fish salmon right out of the Columbia all the time. In fact I'm going tomorrow to Draino Lake for the spring run. I know what fresh salmon roe looks like, smells like, tastes like and feels like. (I've turned my catch into caviar instead of cured bait once or twice when the eggs were superior in their quality and maturation). I got my Ikura sushi and could tell right away that I was not going to even touch this stuff. The eggs were cloudy white inside (very bad sign), and withered into little deflated balls of leathery goo. They smelled fishy. (Ironically, another bad sign, and a bad pun). I got up, paid for everything but the Ikura and told the waitress why. She said she was sorry and she didn't know they were like that because she never eats it. Folks, if the employees don't eat their own food, you should have alarms and sirens blaring in your head, screaming "DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!" /sadface. This was the worst customer service I have ever had. They took 10 minutes to ask us if we wanted drinks. My daughter ordered 2 plates of California rolls and it took them 15 minutes to actually get it to her. And since it was Tuesday they had $1.25 for each plate if you purchase a drink. My daughter got water and when we payed the lady said that she should have purchased a drink. I do not plan on coming here anytime soon. read more

I went there on Tuesday night for the first time. Our friends recommended. They have $1 per plate promo. It was pretty crowded. As other reviewers mentioned, it's one of those conveyor belt style sushi restaurants. So you should not expect too much. Taste is good for the price. At the same time, you will notice why it is $1 per plate. My favorite was seared salmon and raw salmon (both nigiri not roll). They have a wide selection of rolls. Interesting stuff. They have lots of deep fried items. Most of the rolls have this spicy sauce on the top which dominates the taste so all the rolls taste the same. You know just like putting ketchup on everything. For nigiri sushi, not many selections that night. Only tuna, eel, white tuna, salmon and egg. It's a good place for families with kids that want to eat a lot without worrying about the bill. They have fruits and desserts as well so kids will love it. They won't care whether it's frozen or not. But if you want authentic sushi, you will be disappointed. For myself, once is enough. I'm not a big eater anyway, so I would rather pay a little more and have a better grade sushi. For your information, the bill doesn't show the total amount, so it's kind of tricky. It only shows how many plates you ate (when it's $1 per plate, it's easy to calculate) and how many drinks you ordered. You need to calculate the total in your head before approaching the cashier. My family has been to Sushi Moto frequently...2-3 times a month and usually on Tuesday nights when they have $1 plates with drink purchase. The service had always been amazing and the sushi made fresh to order. Sometimes the sushi on the conveyor belt doesn't look fresh and in the past, we would just order fresh sushi...seared salmon, tower rolls and Vegas rolls being favorites. The last couple of visits, when we have ordered fresh sushi, the "new" sushi chef (who we discovered is the owner) has just grabbed the old, unsavory items off the belt and handed them to us. If you have ever had a Vegas roll, you know that they must be fresh to be good. My son ordered vegas and tower rolls and the chef handed the unsavory vegas rolls from the belt to him. He ate the old piece but my husband asked for a fresh order, to which the owner rolled his eyes and looked away without answering and we could clearly see he was angry. The Vegas roll finally arrived (we nearly left since we didn't know if it was being made)...my son never did receive the tower roll he had ordered. read more

As a former employee, I strongly advise against eating here. I don't write this reveiw out of spite, I quit of my own accord because it didn't feel right serving food to customers that I wouldn't dream of eating myself. I write it because I'm concerned with public health and safety. I have no clue how this place passes health code. The practices and condition of the kitchen are not to standard. The layers of slime and grime coating every surface should be the least of your worries. Mind you, we are talking about raw ingredients here. A certain level of neglect for cleanliness can be tolerated in joints that serve food sanitized by the deep fryer or other heat sources, but this is sushi. Fish and other meats are kept uncovered and undated. Basic storage rules - no meat stacked on top of vegetables/ no raw meat stored with cooked meat/cover and date everything ect. are the last thing on the owners mind. I've seen perishables left on countertops for hours. All the sushi is made in the morning and sits on the belt all day. The colored stickers on the lids are for show and have no meaning. One time I brought a box of smashed up raw albacore that clearly smelled and looked bad , to the owner. He took the box, drenched the fish in siratcha, mashed it up some more, and instructed me to serve it to customers. The hot sauce did mask the smell of the rot, I'll give him that. The practice of peeling off old latex gloves and putting fresh ones on are highly frowned upon. I guess they're trying to save $ on gloves. I say "the cooks" as if there were anyone but me and the owner working there. That should have been the first clue to me that they had difficulty keeping people on their staff. One morning I apparently made the California rolls with too much rice. The owner began slamming things and screaming at me in Korean. I've never seen someone be so stingy with yesterday's rice. I've seen people walk out because of how rudely the owners (husband and wife) behaved towards customers, employees and each other. All that aside, the thing that disturbed me the most was that they don't have any curing process for their fish. Most fish served as sashimi is cured with salt and/or alcohol because simply freezing and thawing alone has not been proven to kill all parasites. Raw fish, especially local salmon, are riddled with them. I couldn't continue serving food there knowing I could make someone sick. Children have a high probability of death from ingesting parasites. Please don't eat here. Your health is not worth it. There are plenty of other sushi-go-rounds in the area. I feel bad that the owners are having such a hard go but at the same time I hope they decide to cut their losses and get out of the restraunt business entirely. read more

Should of listen to the other reviews about this place but I wanted cheap sushi so I went on Tuesday where you buy a drink and every plate is $1.25. When I arrived 3PM, there was only one other customer in the restaurant. The waitress came looking all annoyed when asking us what drinks we wanted and gave a very negative first time experience. The sushi is okay seems like its been sitting on the belt for at least 20 minutes. I think I rather go to sushiland or sushi hana even though the price is a little higher, the sushi tastes more fresh than this place and you will actually feel comfortable. Overall, don't go to this place if you want to eat bad sushi and be treated badly. Then she proceeded to tell me oh no it's not her restaurant and I didn't order from here and I literally just told her I got it from there five minutes ago then she said oh I remember you but you didn't tell me no fish egg I told her yes I did I wrote it down and I called to remind you she kept saying oh my god oh my God and having an attitude and being rude and saying no it's not from her restaurant she kept hanging up on me and then I called her back and let her know what is she going to do to fix this whether it's a refund or get a new one I can't eat this I told her I would even bring the sushi back she had an attitude and said OK bring it back it doesn't matter we're gonna throw it away and then hung up on me worst place ever to go I don't even want to eat the food because the customer service was so bad and she was so rude to a paying customer who also tipped . Do NOT go here she is SO RUDE. If I could give this place A negative thought I would. I have been going to sushi moto pretty much since they opened up shop and they were consistently good. The rolls were a good size, everything tasted good, the staff was friendly, the location was clean. Unfortunately for the past few months, they have been such garbage. I mean the staff is still great and its still clean and stuff but the quality of the food has dropped. I keep going and hoping that they were just having a bad day, but i think ive officially given up on this place. The rolls have become so small. Walked in for the first time and had to wait for a seat. Observed a waitress wipe the table and then the floor with a rag and used her foot to wipe the floor. I then watched her go "rinse" the rag and continue to clean the tables with the same rag. We couldn't stay with the image in our head of the unsterile rag that just "cleaned" our table. read more

Came to the happy hour got seated right away but took forever to receive our drinks. The sushi section was eh, didn't seem like much especially for how many people were there. Noticed the belt didn't really go all the way around like sushi land and sushi Hana this time. Ordered sushi that wasn't on the belt and it took forever to get to us and didn't even get handed what we actually asked for. This is my family's go to spot for sushi. The price is right and they have amazing sushi. My daughter is not the biggest fan of sushi but the wait staff were more than helpful in helping my daughter pick an alternative.
