Had high expectations as the google reviews were pretty good. It was overall disappointing. Maybe we ordered the wrong things. Their udon didn't taste very Japanese at all. It was more like a noodle dish we would get at a HK cafe or sth. It felt more like a bunch of random things tossed into a salty soup base. The yakisoba was super salty. The portion was good but just so salty. The rolls were much better in terms of flavours and textures but just not enough to save us from a disappointing experience. read more

Not a bad Japanese place I'm on Davies. Lovely food presentation and flavor. I really like their salmon oshi, Mugen chicken and tempera at this place. The salmon oshi was creamy and soft and I really like the honey bacon in the tempura. Their Gyoza skin needs to be more crisp. I think thicker dumpling skin would help. The staff are friendly and attentive. They would get full stars if they pay more attention to the details like cracked plates and glass cups. The decor of the place is modern. It would be even better if they can hide their plates, and tools behind the counters vs in the open eye where it's more or less the first thing you see when you enter the door. read more

I've been here many times and I often tell people it's the best sushi in Vancouver. My experience yesterday was much less enjoyable. I suggested here for a first date because the service is typically excellent and my favourite roll "the hipster roll" has been a long time favourite. We sat and placed our order, two minutes later the server was back saying he forgot what we ordered. I'm a long time service employee so I understand and gave it to him again. We start conversations again and two minutes later the server is back saying he forgot it again. He wasn't writing anything down assuming because the screen is 3 feet away but I give it to him again. And I kid you not he came back a 4th time in the span of maybe 8 minutes saying he still couldn't remember it... We ordered 4 items... and have now been interrupted 3 times. Ten minutes later our first item arrives. We were told it's my favourite. Most of their large rolls look similar and I couldn't remember what exactly it looked like so we started our meal. We each had a bite and I knew something wasn't right, but my date enjoyed it so I decided to try another piece and as my mouth was full the server ran up to us saying that's it's not the roll we've ordered and they brought the wrong one. At this point it's half gone and because my date was enjoying it we just shrugged it off and said we would just keep it. ( it's a 20$ roll) being in service I would have given it to the guest at a reduced price and at least asked if we wanted the correct order... None of that happened. I never received what I actually ordered and was charged full price for the roll I ordered which was more expensive being told that the one they brought us was actually more expensive. I checked the online menu when I got home and mine was more expensive and they made me pay extra for their mistakes. I'm giving a 3 star because every other time I've been here it's been amazing but this time is making me question if I'll be coming back again. Very disappointed for 80$ worth of sushi. read more

My gf and her friend got off work and they were looking for a late lunch. They both work downtown so they ended up wanting to try Sushi Mugen (in the West End). I think Sushi Mugen is ok. It's a Korean owned Japanese restaurant. We shared a few dishes. I liked the spicy salmon salad. It had a nice sweet spicy ness to it. The drawback was the leaves in the salad looked a bit on the old side. They were withered in appearance. I got the impression that it was not too fresh. Also the salmon aburi was not pressed too well. It fell apart easily when I was using my chopsticks to pick it up a piece. Also, the rice was a bit on the undercooked side; it was not moist and tender when one bit into it. I guess the best dish was the soft shell crab. Nicely fried it was tasty and flavourful! Service was good. The kid who served us was very attentive. He removed all our dirty plates immediately. Maybe the fact that we were the only customers in the restaurant at the time had something to do with it! Hahaha! Overall, I would say if you're in a pinch and you're looking for something to eat Sushi Mugen is an ok choice, but the simple fact is that there are tons of good to excellent sushi restaurants in Van City... This a pretty new-ish sushi spot. A friend recommended this to us so we decidded to give it a go. He said it's owned by a Japanese chef. The place is huge and aesthetically beautiful. The beauty does not just stop there. It also applies to their dishes. They are the first sushi restaurant I know that serve vegetables with everything. They also have a "signature" on every plate, and some of them are served with fire, for beauty of course! The taste does not disappoint. Everything we ordered was excellent, fresh and savory. Definitely quality food at this restaurant. Design is modern, sleek and clean. They also make superior efforts to plate the dishes beautifully. As usual, I am a sucker for a great deal so I'm ordering their Lunch Bento Box basically every single time. They have a one that is Vegetarian, a Teriyaki Box and my go to: Sashimi Box. The amount of food you get (regardless of box) is actually pretty intense, like it's a giant meal! To be specific, the Sashimi Box is a protein lover's dream; 7 pieces of Sashimi (duh),some Nigiri, a couple pieces of Kara-age and a serving of Teriyaki Beef or Chicken + the other typical Bento sides. Well I have been following this sushi on Instagram for months and finally was able to try it tonight. It exceeded our expectations!!! The space is light and airy, plants etc. There is outside seating and an upstairs. Very convenient parking next door in a public lot. Service was great. Green tea was brought in nice glass cups when we sat down. For appetizers we had the crispy chicken which was Dec crispy with a nicely spiced mayo drizzle. Agadashi tofu was super crunchy. But the kicker was the octopus balls! Takoyaki? Perfectly crispy with an almost creamy interior. Spicy mayo drizzle and covered in bonito flakes. Wow! We also enjoyed the Hipster roll, Vancouver roll, dragon roll and the salmon skin roll. The rolls are big and laid out on salad greens, with two different sauces. A beet purée and a sweet black sesame which was savoury and divine! Two nice pieces of fresh salmon sashimi on the side. The salmon skin roll was so crispy and well presented you almost hated to eat it. The cool thing is that each plate comes with its own tiny fire in a tiny tin. Makes it smell like a bbq. I think it was some Panko with oil on it and that was lit on fire. Obviously not edible and adds to the experience, but I'm sure some kid will stick their finger in there at some point We really loved that part I can't say one bad thing. It was my first time trying this new sushi restaurant in town. I liked welcoming modern decor as soon as I entered. We were a group of 7 including 3 kids. Their menu had beautiful photos and good explanation of ingredients. My friends were very happy to see various vegetarian options Sushi Mugen offered. It had good mix of Japanese and Korean vegetarian menus. My favorite was Aburi slushies and Mugen bites. It had full of flavour from fresh ingredients. Presentation was out of the world! Picture perfect piece of art work. Too bad that I didn't take enough photos. We were too busy enjoying every bites. I only had one photo I just realized. We tried more than10 different dishes. Worst spicy salmon roll ever. It's just a salmon maki with nothing else like cucumber or anything, and it is drenched in way too much sauce. Tastes like nothing except the sauce. By far my favourite Japanese restaurant! Their dishes are both delicious and beautiful to look at. They really take the time and care in their dishes and it really shows. Their specialty rolls are so good, the ingredients fresh and tasty. My go to soup is the Nabeyaki udon which has am apple amount of seafood, teriyaki chicken, egg and two prawn tempuras! The openness of the two level room is very refreshing. Beautifully modern and minimalist decor sets the stage for the artistic plating and presentation of the chefs here. Indeed plates are like canvasses and everything we ordered looked great. As a reknown Canadian chef says, "taste is king" and Sushi Mugen makes a great effort. This was my first visit, so I purposely ordered a few standard maki rolls: BC, Dynamite and Chopped Scallop. Unconventional presentation (no wooden planks here). All maki served on a white slate tile emblazoned with a dramatic black sesame smear. All the rolls were quite good and fresh. Crispy salmon skin in the BC roll was appreciated. Very fresh chopped scallop and both prawn and yam tempura in the dynamite. Rice ratio was excellent. I also order one of the signature plates, the Mugen Bites - fried rice cakes topped with spicy salmon atop a spring mix salad. A unique textural experience that only available at Mugen. Their name *mugen* derives from the Japanese word meaning "infinity" - and so it's true, unconventional by choice, the offerings here are fun and creative. Will make a return visit to try more options from their expansive menu. Price point is fair, good place for a great experience. read more

Can't say I wasn't disappointed overall. Wanted the sashimi sampler and they ran out. Didn't give an option of making substitutions or anything. Ran out of a few other nigiri items too that was pretty disappointing. And they didn't balance out when the dishes came out. One person got both the their orders, and as they were close to finishing they other person got theirs and then those two were both done well before I got my dishes. So that was also pretty disappointing. Presentation was pretty cool. Spend less time on presentation and more time speeding up service. read more

That is appy, some nigiris, rolls, miso soup. Food took longer than anticipated. They use large plates and each plate had some sort of decoration that could have been skipped. The rolls had too much rice and tasted like something in food court. Not that it tasted bad, it wasn't meant for sushi. This restaurant can be popular, but it isn't for someone looking for authentic sushi. Even the bill came in cute steel box and that too seemed unnecessary. Maybe it is their thing. My first impression is too many menu items, they sell pastas too, and too much focus on unnecessary details. It felt the details didn't add up to the taste and the vibe of restaurant. We were looking for a good sushi place in Vancouver. This place was very cute on the inside, and was very good priced. The rolls are cheap for the amount you get and the fish tastes fresh. When you walk in they give you a complimentary hot tea which is awesome on a cold January night. They did have a large party they were attending to upstairs, which caused the sushi to come out very late. Due to that they gave everyone waiting on food a complimentary miso soup, which made up for it. read more

I went there tonight but it was closed. Apparently it got shut down by coastal health. I looked through the door, and all the kitchen's equipments, pots, pans, containers etc were being moved to the dining area. Everything looked so dirty and gross. Seriously?! How could people not get sick after eating there? I worked in a restaurant before, and I know they don't just show up to inspect and shut you down the same day. They tell you all the problems and give you time to fix them. They give you multiple warnings before they shut you down. Something is seriously wrong with them. read more

Decided to try a new place tonight, so ordered takeout from Uber. I got the Special Dinner Platter for $25, which includes chicken or beef teriyaki, 6 pcs aburi, 7 pcs sashimi and side dishes (spicy cucumber, mashed potato, salad, goma-ae), and miso soup. I wanted to try out a number of things so I thought this would work the best for me. The good: When I arrived, I was greeted by the very friendly staff there and sent on my way very promptly with my food. Upon first opening the bag, I was impressed with how well organized everything was presented, even for takeout. Everything was neat and separated, and the hot food was placed on aluminum foil within the container. I was also given 2 containers of miso soup, which was a surprise. The bad: Unfortunately, the food fell short, in particular the aburi sushi and sashimi. I got the salmon aburi, and the first piece I had was somehow completely devoid of any flavour. I realized I didn't get any of the sauce or toppings, so I got those on the second piece. Even with the sauce and toppings, this really is nothing to write home about. Sorry to say this but it was the least enjoyable aburi sushi I've had. The fish was thinly sliced, and the rice to fish ratio was quite off. I lopped off quite a bit of rice from the sushi because it was just too much. The sashimi was not fresh. I tasted slight fishiness from the salmon and tuna, which honestly doesn't happen very often in Vancouver. Also, the description said 7 pc sashimi - I got 2 salmon, 2 tuna, 1 hokkigai and.. 2 tamago. I guess technically that is "sashimi" (?) but I don't think I've ever been served tamago in a sashimi set before. Uber did not break down what the "sashimi" would be. The side dishes were also not so great. It actually may have lowered my enjoyment of the chicken teriyaki. The mashed potatoes were weirdly sweet but otherwise tasteless, the spicy cucumber was 2 tiny pieces of cucumber drench in gojuchang sauce, and the goma-e was ok I guess..? The best part of the food was actually the chicken teriyaki. If I ever go back, I will stick with a don or something. Oh and for those who care, their containers are not recyclable (recycle code #7). read more

Make sure you get everything you want at the start because they typically do not have time to check back. I'm glad to see a clean, modern place in this area. It was around 2pm and the place was nearly empty, just the way I like it. The menu is extensive so I took my time to peruse it. Finally decided to the Mugen Chicken and the Mugen Bite. The presentation is pretty! You can't deny them that. The Mugen Bite was good but too sweet for me. It's got the whole Korean sushi sauce happening and I hate that. However, the accompanied salad was really nice. Mugen Chicken seemed like Karage with a special sauce. Tasty. The ambiance was quiet and had soothing background music. My only complaint would be the server was not attentive as others had suggested. He only refilled my water at the end. And it took forever to pay even though he dropped the bill on the table as he was clearing it. I might return if I'm in the hood. read more

Coming to Sushi Mugen is a waste, first off ordering your favorite is hard, they said they have ran out of the sashimi that i wanted and they didnt give me other options, second is that after ordering they asked me to wait outside , why would they asked the customers to wait outside? i asked the waitress with no other reasoning but saying and here me out "THERE IS NO SPACE INSIDE AND TAKE OUT IS OUTSIDE" .. it was unpleasant especially in a late winter month that they want you to outside and wait! how pathetic this place is! and thats not only it, it took them so long to make and give my order! when i see the other people coming in literaly after i ordered and giving their order before me!..... and so i got my order and left, and the by the time i had a bite of thier sashimi, i stated the fish very very fishy and the smell is old that and you can totaly know its been left for long that it gives that taste and smell ! and also the rolls have hard old rice that really gives me off! I want to complain about the place! but i thought its a waste of time not mentioning its pricey compared to other sushi place ive been! Was very excited to try Sushi Mugen due to their active presence on Instagram. It was definitely worth it. Very friendly service first of all. The menu is very extensive and the presentation is 100%. So much to choose from it was very tough to make our final decisions. Amongst our decision we ordered the dragon roll and although the most expensive roll was worth it as the presentation was incredible. Cannot wait to come back and order other items and work our way through the special roll menu. Loved the images in the menu as well. Thumbs up to this place. Do not hesitate to visit.
