This is our go to spot for YEARS. We've been coming since we moved to the Canyon Crest area of Riverside in 2019. The food is good but the service has definitely gone down hill. And today is why I won't be returning. We went in for lunch and Karen, the server, acknowledged us and said give me a minute. We sat down on the front bench to wait, even grabbed a menu to know what we wanted to order because I was on my lunch break. We waited about 10 minutes because we could see they were busy with the lunch rush, but then a "regular" walked in and they seated him immediately. Didn't even acknowledge that we were still sitting there waiting, reading the menu, knowing he had literally just walked in the door. They then seated us and we let them know we were ready to order as we got to the table, but we were accused of being rude and sent over the manager because she wasn't going to serve us anymore. Like what? You ignored me. I'm on my lunch break and was still patient enough to wait because I like the food. And now you're saying I'm rude? That's when I decided to leave and Karen proceeded to tell Jeff, the manager, let them go, we're busy. The manager told her no, what you did is not ok. The server's reasoning for skipping us, was the customer that walked in is a "regular". Since I am not a "regular" I won't be returning. read more

Occupying a space in a stucco building, you'll find this little gem. A sushi bar that's stripped to its essence. I had sushi here for the first time and the service was terrible! Surprised I never been here before, because the food was simply delicious! Everything else was just not a good first impression. I will say that my plus-one and I waited a long while before our order was taken. Maybe 15-20 minutes. We lost track of time actually because we were a having long and great conversation. When finally arriving to our table to take our order, we had to ask for menus. So, another wait we had to endeavor. Given 10 minutes to order or so, we made our food selection. When our food finally arrived to table, my plus one was told it would be last call. Seriously!? You're gonna have us wait this long and then tell us it's last call? I found this absurd sorta. So, another drink was ordered. When the food arrived, we noticed an extra plate of sushi. They said that it was accidentally placed in our order, so it was FREE essentially to eat. Now, we didn't know the portion size of these menu items, so we would have opted to order a lot, so another sushi plate was really quite filling. We ended it up wasting it by leaving it. We were told this was their fault. They accidentally ordered the plate. Just before finishing our meal, I overheard they were giving a couple at a table a bowl of ice cream to share. Food: My group all got a couple different rolls with a variety of sashimi and miso soup. One of my friends rolls had a hair WRAPPED AROUND the roll. He immediately noticed it while the server was still giving us the rest of the food and he shrugged it off and said he would have them remake it. We also got a couple of miso soups and they were cold with pieces of tofu stuck to the bottom of the bowls?? Terrible service. We came here on a Sunday evening and had nothing but rude and bitchy servers. We were told it would be a 40 minute wait for 7 people, and unfortunately it took so long that a member of our party wasn't able to stay. We had driven from over an hour away to have dinner together. After the 40 minutes and not having been called, my husband had to go inside and ask where we were in line. Only then did they attempt to clear the table. Waited over an hour to be sat. Once sat, they gave us our menus and took our drink orders and then did not come back to take our food order until a good 20 minutes later AGAIN. The waitress with a butterfly tattoo who took our order, was extremely bitchy and short!!! When she asked if we were ready to order, I said "yes!" Guess she didn't like us being impatient and hungry She kept saying, "and for you? And for you?" Cutting off the members of our party during mid order and acting like we were hassling her. You don't want to work? Don't be here. Plain and simple. Our food also took forever and none of it came to the table at the same time. My mother and sister had to wait for their food to come out a good 10 minutes past each sushi roll. Guess we didn't plan to eat our meal TOGETHER?? Spacious parking spot - so you won't be going crazy look for a spot. This place is quite modernized for Japanese Restaurant with some wooden furniture for the asian touch. We were very hungry that made us order 5 different menu. What made me quite surprised is the hot beverage, they particularly highlight the cold beverages, which caused there is no hot beverages offered (hot green tea, matcha, etc.) so unfortunately I only had hot water to drink, and at first I was served room temperature water and I have to order again to be able to have real hot water one. The menu variations are widely ranged from Sushi, Sashimi, Appetizer, Noodles until Rice Bowls. The menu that a little bit disappointed was SPICY RAMEN;it is indeed spicy, BUT since the review comes from me as Ramen lover - for $9 at least they can add some veggies in it, the egg was over boiled, and taste like instant noodle to me - not recommended one. Everything else were quite decent. BAKED GREEN MUSSELS to my opinion has too "mayonnaisy"; same with CRAZY ROLL. NARUTO ROLL is so good and refreshing! The menu has some pictures, and that will be great if the pics have more explanation as what menu each pic represents. I've given r91 so many chances cause I love sushi and sometimes i'm lazy to cook. The rolls are so mid, they just taste like a blob of mushy crab meat and rice. I don't taste the fish or any other flavors that they try to incorporate. I have tried 2 different rolls this week, the mango tango and the fuego roll and was soooo dissapointed. I am a sushi lover, I can eat sushi every single day for every single meal: but I could barely swallow their rolls. don't think I'll ever go back to r91 no matter how badly I'm craving sushi or how lazy I am. Solid sushi spot in Riverside near UC-Riverside. I Chose this place since their fish looked pretty fresh considering Riverside being pretty inland (albeit along a River.... haha). Ample parking in their huge lot. This is a review during COVID times. I saw they hand outdoor dining but preferred take out. Called their phone for takeout, and on a busy Saturday evening had my order ready in 30-45min. Overall good sanitization during the process. I thought their Salmon Tataki Roll is very good- nice flavor and has nice crunchy toppings which add to it. We also got their Sunshjne Roll (Fresh salmon outside with Spicy tuna inside) which was solid. I also enjoyed their Baked Lobster roll (standard but good). We also got their chicken Yakisoba- this was the one mistake, and highly don't recommend it. It tasted exactly like a bad chow mein, not at all like the ones you would get in a traditional restaurant. Usually Yakisoba is with beef, so I'm hoping the only reason it was bad was partly due to the lack of traditionally beef flavor? Overall great place for sushi. read more

I gave R91 one last try and unfortunately will not return. Had another disappointing experience. I ordered takeout and was completed shorted, missing 2 rolls. I also tried the tuna toro which had an off-putting color. It was chewy, I found bones in it, and tasted terrible. SOOO fishy!! I had to spit it out and throw the rest away! The baked mussels barely had any meat on them, about a quarter size. My first bite of my meal was the tuna and because of the texture and taste it completely ruined my appetite. If anyone wants good sashimi or sushi with FRESH fish, go try Momo sushi instead. read more

I have decent experience eating sushi and sashimi. So far this is the worst sushi I've tasted. The "fresh" sashimi seemed like it's been sitting there long enough to have a bad smell and weird taste. The piece of fish did not look shiny and fresh like what I usually have at other places. The California roll was made of hard rice. I can't pick up the whole piece to eat because the rice fell out easily The takoyaki was cold inside and hot outside which is unreasonable because the octopus should be cooked first then the batter. Well, I did what I used to do and got a California roll with only seaweed and rice, apparently, I ought to have been able to taste the sourness of the rice with the light seasoning. It's said that some sushi judges base their opinions of the seasoning on the rice in sushi... I hade to admit... their rice was extremely bland... not the sourness and mix of salt and sugar I had hoped for. (Upon eating all of them, SOME were more flavorful than the rest.) I got the avocado rolls because I was hungry and not discriminating what was in my cut rolls. They were... a lot messier than I remembered. It was quite a task eating them. The avocados... weren't ripe. And since they're the only thing in my roll, it was difficult to eat. I ended up dipping in more soy sauce and wasabi than I usually prefer. So it was a little disappointing. But, oh! What redeemed my experience a little was the egg!! It was so nicely flavored! The familiar flavors were all there and I ended my rap on a high note! Great place for lunch or dinner. If you are going to dine with someone who does not like fish or sushi you can bring them here for a large non fish/vegan option. My favorite are the avocado rolls and the tempura roll. The tempura vegetable appetizer is also delicious. I haven't eaten sushi in a long time but when I did anything I ordered here was good. We ordered a mixed tempura (6 tempura-- 2 shrimp, 4 vegetable) and gyoza's for appetizers. The tempura was done well. A little bit too oily but crunchy and tasty. The gyozas were too dry. I didn't like them too much. I ordered the sashimi and spicy tuna combination. The sashimi was good and fresh but the spicy tuna roll was below average. There was just nit enough spicy mayonnaise added to the minced tuna. The other food that we ordered (California roll, caterpillar roll and rainbow roll) were all average. The silliest thing about this review is they absolutely CRUSHED the Tamago Nigiri. You can go to a place and it be too sweet or too bland or just straight up awful texture and it really just sang in concert with the soy sauce/wasabi/chili paste mix I made. If I'm this wild about the Tamago, imagine how you're gonna feel about the Yellowtail Belly or everything else on it's wonderful menu. I ordered via Doordash and the order came quick, clearly marked and most importantly fresh. Didn't have to beg for sauces or even ask, they hooked me and my uncle up handsomely. R91 has been my go-to sushi spot the past few years. Their rolls are amazing, and the chefs are so kind. I highly recommend the Santa Monica roll, Salmon Tataki, Sunshine roll, and the Fuego roll. My roll has stuffed with tempura, avocado and cucumber, topped with pan seared tuna. OMG IT WAS BOMB DOT COM!!! The search added such a unique flavor it was ridiculously good. The 4 star review is because I order my roll with soy paper and no spicy mayo. It came with seaweed and mayo so it was returned only to come back again with spicy mayo. Note, the spicy mayo was good, but I cant handle spicey. I ate as much as I could but once I felt my esophagus melting I had to stop. I will definitely go back. This place was amazing! We ordered the sushi boat with over 40 pieces of fish, garlic edamame, chicken ramen, and the gyoza. The gyoza seemed to be hand made from scratch and same with the garlic sauce for the edamame. The sushi was so good and came out fresh.
