This appears to be a classic case of a good restaurant starting to go bad. We ordered two entrees and were appalled by the lack of preparedness in both cases. Unlike what you may have experienced at better Japanese restaurants, the beef was poorly trimmed, no effort to remove excess fat, and the pieces were not even cut down to an acceptable size for stir-frying. The chicken was also cut up rather oddly and had bits of bone in it, which hardly follows the traditional presentation methods characteristic of the Japanese cuisine. The teriyaki sauce was an excessively sweet product that tasted like it came right out of a bottle. The original thought on all of this is that if they do that piss poor a job in prep work, why would you even allow the kitchen staff to cook it? In all fairness, we did not try the sushi (and based on this experience, never will), so it may be possible they do a good job on sushi, but they truly are awful with regard to cooked entrees. The miso soup was so-so, the salad they did okay on, but the management did not show anything resembling concern over the criticisms raised. As pointed out in another review, the manager showed no inclination to try and accommodate this or any other complaint. Traditional Japanese food is an art form locked in at the meticulous level of preparation. The meats used showed a complete lack of professional detail. During an impromptu trip to Dallas (Houstonian avoiding Hurricane Harvey), I was lucky to stay with one of my good friends in Southlake. With all the Harvey hysteria, I tagged along with her on the search for gas! After all the mess we decided to treat ourselves to a hearty sushi meal nearby! She immediately suggested Sushi Sam. Being from Houston, I already have a spot there I hold close to my heart but this place DEFINITELY impressed me. We came at an off-hour, 3:00pm, so the restaurant was fairly empty but the service was still top-notch; they were very attentive to our needs. I ordered a salmon roll, flounder, scallop nigiri. We both split a veggie tempura as well. The quality, I could tell was HIGH! I didn't feel guilty about paying a little more for their fish. The taste was unbeatable! Exceeded my expectations for sure. Another little plus was how sweet our sushi chef was! He made both me and my friend EACH two pieces of the peppered tuna sushi on the house just for us to enjoy and try! That really took my experience to the next level. Such an AMAZING place. My friend Emily and I go here ALLLLL the time. The first thing she does when she gets home is go here. She will litterally get off the plane and her and her mom will drive straight to Sushi Sams. Their sushi is not comparable to any other in texas because it's just great quality. Also for lunch they have Box's that change everyday full of good stuff and it's the perfect size for like $8.50 which includes soup, salad, meat, another apatizer type option, california roll, and sometimes more. Good deal. They are known for their really good california rolls there, and TRUST ME, i live in california and the california rolls are better here than anywhere else. And last time i was there they had Paula Dean from the food channel on TV making her crazy stuff and it just titalated me to no extent. I'm a bit biased because this was the first sushi joint I tried when I moved to D/FW in 2003 fron NYC and continues to be one of my favorites. It's a great place for dates as well as families. The menu is varied enough where both sushi newbies and seasoned veterans will find something to enjoy. My stepfather is not too big on sushi but he loves the cooked dishes he orders (especially the teriyaki beef) and the Philadelphia roll. Their sushi is always so fresh, especially their uni, which my mom is always grateful for. My boyfriend and I go here fairly often when we have the cash (it's pricier than our preferred local places) but even if there's been some time between visits the chef remembers us and cranks out special food just for us. I think the secret to getting excellent service and the best food is to become a regular here. They'll treat you well. :) read more

I really love the sushi here and the udon soup is equally as good! My favorite roll is the grapevine roll or Southlake roll. The service is always pretty quick and friendly. Lunch isn't terribly busy which I really love but I also pick up too. I would recommend anyone to try this little hole in the wall sushi spot! read more

We had excellent, prompt service. The atmosphere was perfect for date night. We both agreed that the sushi was the best we've ever had. The chefs were friendly and took care of us at the bar. We were even given some complimentary sample rolls after our meal to enjoy by the chef. Overall a wonderful dining experience. In the 34 years I've lived in the area I have been to Sushi Sam's four times, the first two times it was excellent it's just gone downhill. About four years ago I went and it was awful and I ate there tonight and it was awful I ordered the tempura shrimp and vegetables and the breading was very doughy and gooey, not crispy at all. The salad dressing was like soup had no flavor. Very very disappointed but it will be the very last time I ever go there to eat. I had one shrimp and one piece of vegetable and part of the salad and threw the rest of the meal away what a waste of food and of money. read more

While looking for a new sushi place to experience in our area my girl and I looked at Yelp reviews as usual. During this we noted that Sushi Sam had a four star average giving it a favorable light. We looked for some ideas of what might be the best dishes to try and saw that only two dishes were mentioned: The Ahi Tower, and the Colleyville Roll. With the decision to try behind us we approached the facade, where from outside Sushi Sam has nearly dark, sultry lighting giving it an authentic japanese night spot feel, but once you open the door you discover that there are thick window treatments, and the mood lighting resembles more that of a McDonalds playground facility. After almost no wait we were greeted by a nice woman who sat us promptly at a large table against the wall. We were given the handful of menus and paperwork to begin our dining experience. We quickly noted the previously highlighted menu items and decided they were a must try, as well as selecting a few other items from both the cold and hot sides of the menu. Our server read back to us: Ahi tower; colleyville roll, kamikaze roll, ultra crunchy roll; saba shioyaki; teriyaki beef with miso soup and salad. Yes this is alot of food, but we like to see the whole menu when we go somewhere for the first time. The Ahi Tower was the best dish. A giant tower beginning with a base of white steamed rice followed by a layer of crab meat, then avocado, and topped with spicy tuna, then surrounded by pools of eel sauce, and wasabi mayo. Very delicious. Next was the Colleyville Roll. Tempura shrimp rolled with crabmeat and rice and then topped with ahi tuna alongside spicy mayo, eel sauce, and wasabi mayo. That was the end of delicious! It is very evident why these were the only two items commented on previously. However, I do not understand the 4 star rating. The Kamikaze roll is one of the 7 or 8 options on the menu that doesn't have cream cheese in it, so we gave it a try. Crab meat and jalapeno rolled up with nori and rice and then topped with shrimp, slices of avocado, and super white tuna. Sounds great, except the sauces served alongside are too sweet and become cloying with the natural sweetnes of the fish and shrimp. The shrimp, on a great deal of rolls as is the cream cheese, were over cooked and chewy, and the white tuna was aged a bit too much for my liking. The Ultra Crunchy was anything but. Some scant dusting of greasy tempura crumbs scattered about the top of an underwhelming roll to begin with. The overall experience was dry with no sauce to brighten the dish. The Saba Shioyaki is described on the menu as Mackeral seasoned and "grilled to perfection". This came out on a small plate with an 80's diner feel. Two small pieces of grayish mackeral with whispers of grill marks laid atop a wilted piece of lettuce and next to an undecipherable couple of slices of red dyed vegetable. The fish was not seasoned or grilled to perfection. It lacked any seasoning whatsoever, had an incredibly fishy flavor, and was riddled with more bones the a day of the dead celebration. Lastly came the Beef Teriyaki. Advertised as grilled rib eye with teriyaki sauce. At least there are no suggestions that perfection would be arriving on this plate, as that would have been way off. The rib eye was grilled beyond well done, leaving only a grayed leather shoe strap of beef bathed in a sauce that mimicked Mrs. Butterworth's Syrup more than a traditional teriyaki. The service was attentive and kept the drinks flowing throughout our dinner. Sushi Sam has a full liquor license and serves wine by the glass or bottle; beer, both imported and domestic; sake; and mixed drinks. I Give Sushi Sam 2 stars overall. One for the service, and one for the Ahi Tower and Colleyville Roll. If you must go to Sushi Sam, be sure not stray too far from these dishes and drinks. Happy Dining. read more

Regrettably, the shrimps in the Spicy Seafood Undo were not fresh at all- their colors were very dark.... One of the waitress saw it but did not say anything until I asked another waitress if the shrimps are OK, whom later on brought us three fresh shrimps.... Would like to give this place more than 3 stars. They have a problem with food timing. We have been here many many times. We are a family of four and believe that we order basic stuff. Sushi, entrees with rice, udon. They always seem to leave out one order, esp the sushi. It comes out so late that the rest of the table has finished their meal. Hubby loves their beef teriyaki. I've been coming to Sushi Sam's for close to five years and I honestly can't say I've ever had a bad experience. I frequent Cowtown as well, and I'm not sure there's a whole lot of difference between the two. The service is always great at Sushi Sam's, and it's a blast to sit at the sushi bar and talk with the chefs. I've never had anything besides the sushi, but I've heard great things about the Salmon Teriyaki and the Chicken Udon (soup's not my thing, but I'm tempted to try this devil). The rolls are comparable in taste and price to most of the places in Dallas. What I find funny is that some of the specialty rolls on the menu come from special requests that people kept making. The fact that someday I could have a sushi roll named after me is a concept that is probably part of the reason I keep coming back. . .now if I could just stumble onto the right combination. I'll keep working on it and forcing roll after roll into my gut. . .man, the sacrifices I'm willing to make for the greater good. The mackerel sashimi is very light and has a great texture. That and the red snapper sashimi are my personal preferences before diving into the heartier rolls. Sadly a good bit of their rolls are plagued with the SSD (Suburb Sushi Disease) or feeling the need to put cream cheese in a lot of their signature rolls. However, unlike some places, they're more than happy to drop the cream cheese if you ask. Once you're ready for the heartier rolls, these are the ones you can't go wrong with: Twin Roll: Named for a couple twin girls that used to (and maybe still do) frequent the restaurant. It's a tempura shrimp roll with shrimp and avocado on top. If they get it to you still hot it's probably one of the best things on the menu. Lots of polar textures and flavors that work perfectly together. Love Me Tender Roll: Salmon, Ahi tuna, yellowtail, and shrimp. You really can't go wrong with that much awesomeness. Dust it with some masago and it's a winner. Carroll Roll: One of the few rolls I've had that uses ponzu sauce and uses it well. Ahi tuna, crab, salmon, shrimp and yellowtail with green onion for an added snap. . .great. The standard sushi rolls are also on the menu (spider, california, spicy tuna, volcano, etc.) but what's the fun of eating sushi if you're going to eat the exact same thing every stinking time? Finish the night up with some hot sake (regular or bomb style. . .I don't judge) and it's a pretty good meal for a place out in the suburbs. read more

Sushi Sam has managed to impress me again! Went there last night with the fiancee and the waitress offered us the "special sushi" menu. Heck yeah!?! We tried the Ahi Nachos and Joy roll. The Ahi nachos were spicy tuna, jalapenos, cilantro, and special sauce on top of a tortilla chip. The plate comes with about 12-15 bites and was spendid! I can't remember what was in the Joy roll but I can tell you it was lightly fried on the outside and pure goodness. This is probably one of the best sushi restaurants I've been too but it was on the expensive side. I ordered the Tornado Roll, which was really really good. I loved the flavors of the cream cheese combined with the yellow tail fish. The jalapeno added a nice spice to the roll, but didn't overpower the other flavors. All the ingredients tasted fresh. My only complaints would be that it seemed to take a long time to get my food, I came here around 1pm on a weekday and it wasn't very busy but it took over 15 minutes to make my one roll. I also felt it was expensive. The Tornado roll was $13.00 and with my drink and tip the meal cost me over $20. Due to the cost of the rolls, I only ordered one so I ended up leaving here hungry. read more

Don't let the strip mall effect fool you this is a great hidden secret of Southlake for Sushi lovers. I love the PB Roll and can't seem to go anywhere on the menu besides this item since I love it so much. The roll has salmon, avocado and cream cheese. The service is always dependable, and professional. The food is super fresh and made to order. I am a bit of a salmon snob since I lived in the Northwest for a number of years and I know fresh seafood.
