I ordered take out and when I picked up my food, they said it wasn't ready yet. I sat in the front, right in front of the hostesses. I waited over 45 min and then I finally asked "is my food almost ready yet?" One of the hostess looks over at the table where the take out food is. She says "yes it's right here." So I asked her "has that order been sitting there for a while and you didn't say anything to me?" She giggles "yes I think so." I was so angry that I waited over 45 min for my food and they saw me waiting there. I asked to talk to the manager and after waiting another 10 min to talk to him/her. The hostess came back and said the manager was too busy to talk to me and gave me a coupon for 20% off next time. 20% off coupon is such a load of crap for making me wait 45 minutes for nothing. Their service is absolutely horrendous and did not even care. Manager had no interest in even trying to make amends. I will never go back to a place with such horrible service and uncaring workers. read more

Words cannot describe how great of an experience we just had at this little sushi joint just outside of Dallas. I personally had the DFW roll, the spicy tuna roll, and the spicy salmon roll, all topped off with an order of fried bananas and red bean ice cream. Maybe I'm not fancy enough but they started our meal by bringing us hot towels to wash our hands off with which I had never had done for me before, it started the meal out right. This was followed by a small cucumber salad. Our waiter Tristan was awesome and on the ball. We shared some great laughs and some great food. If I was from here I would most definitely come back around! The experience from start to finish was fantastic and unprecedented as compared to most sushi restaurants that I have visited. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a sushi SAMs review yet!!! Going up in slake sushi SAMs was the ONLY sushi place in town! My parents would take us about once a month. I always enjoyed and looked forward to coming. Then in high school you knew a boy really liked you when he took you to sushi SAMs on a date. I guess I have grown up and been to too many nicer places... I usually come here for a quick bento box lunch, it's always very mediocre. I was really looking forward to trying this place as I've heard that they get their fish from the same places the well known sushi places in Dallas get them from but don't sell it with such premium prices. We ordered a variety of rolls, along with some salmon and king salmon nigiri. I can't remember exactly what all the rolls we ordered were called but we had one wrapped in cucumber which was pretty good and refreshing. We also had butterfly kisses, which I typically get at other places.. this one had an avocado in it, which is interesting but the quality of the fish and the crabmeat inside it wasn't impressive. The other rolls we got were all pretty mediocre as well. The prices here were pretty fair and the rolls had decent sizes but again, there wasn't really anything that stood out to make me want to come back. As far as the nigiri, the salmon wasn't anything special either but the king salmon was pretty good. However, the king salmon is about the same quality as what I get in other places for the regular salmon. For dessert, we did try the mango crem brulee. It was pretty good, I was suprised that the crem brulee part actually tasted like mango. However, the sugar layer on top was a bit too thick, making this dessert overall too sweet. I was hoping that this place would be my new go-to sushi place since it is a lot closer but it looks like I'd still be making the drive over to Carrolton for some Fujiyama! read more

A few friends introduced me to Sushi Sam this past weekend -- I hadn't eaten sushi for at least 2 months so I was heavily salivating by the time we had been seated and handed our large menus. I had no intentions of eating anything but the sushi, but our friends ended up with some appetizers -- namely some tempura breaded green beans with an incredibly tasty mayo-sriracha sauce and rock shrimp, which is basically tempura battered shrimp accompanied by a special slightly sweet brown dipping sauce. Your appetite begins to grow, especially after finishing off complimentary cucumber salad in a Japanese vinaigrette dressing. A few things about the sushi itself -- the specialty sushi menu is unique, and if you are going to try one of them, try the Ahi Tuna Tower -- OMG that was delicious!!! Pile upon pile of fresh avocado, savory and flavorful tuna sashimi and bits of crab in a tasty sauce. A little pricey, but they heap on the goodness. Although fresh and tasty, the spicy tuna rolls surprised me -- nowhere on the menu did they indicate that a spicy tuna/spicy salmon roll would equal spicy tuna/spicy salmon hosomaki. (Where there is just fish and nothing else to accompany it) -- I felt shortchanged -- it just didn't seem worth it for the price tag. Also, although the service wasn't rude, they forgot my surf clam sashimi and when I reminded them half way through the meal, they brought it at the very end with no apologies. :P Boo. All in all, this sushi bar and restaurant is clean and appealing and their fish is fresh and tasty. However, the dinner prices are a bit high in my book and the service so-so. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. I used to drive straight here when coming back into town from college. You can't leave without trying the Colleyville roll and the Ahi tower. All the sashimi here is great, thick slices and served COLD on a bed of shaved ice. I also love their salad dressing and the hamachi kama appetizer. After living in what's referred to by Texans in this area as the "Metroplex" for a few months now, via Chicago, it's been a tough road trying to find decent sushi. I've been depressed, and have been contemplating using my miles and heading back to Chicago for a weekend. After yelping "sushi" in the neighboring Southlake, I finally hit the Toro jackpot. My 6 month old was fussy, so takeout was in store. Four rolls, and four pieces of sushi = $71.00. Ouch! This was Chicago pricing, and I didn't feel as though rent could be that high in the "Metroplex" to justify $14 a roll. Neverthless, I ordered it, and did, indeed pick it up. Upon entering, the place was buzzing, and everyone looked happy, and as if they were in a near sushi / sake coma. When I got home, I devoured this delicious sushi (with the help of wifey), in a matter of 10 minutes. When the in-laws babysit next, wifey and I will dine in at Sushi Sam. There have been so many sushi places that have come and gone in Southlake but Sushi Sam will always win. Their sushi is inexplicably awesome. Let me just make this easy for you and tell you what you need to order: -Ahi nachos for appetizer -Colleyville Roll (cooked tempura inside, raw fish outside and the best wasabi/mayonnaise sauce you will ever have) -Ahi Tower (food that looks good and tastes good, best of both worlds) -Tai Tiradito (thin slices of snapper topped with cilantro, Sriracha, and jalapeno. drooool) -Fried ice cream for dessert And for those who don't love raw fish-- their cooked entrees are pretty awesome too. Nestled in a strip center with a Fuzzy's Tacos and a tanning salon, this place will surprise you. As you walk in, the decor is nothing to special. The host greets you with a smile every time. I always sit at the sushi bar, I feel like it adds to the ambience of a sushi restaurant. The sushi and drink menu's are pretty standard, nothing to0 off the wall. I have actually never had one of the cooked dishes so I can't comment on those. The raw fish is where it's at. Any order you get, whether it be sushi, sashimi, or a roll, will knock your socks off. I think they are catching the fish behind the building in some super-secret salt water lake. I have no idea how the fish is always so fresh. I rarely actually order anything anymore. Sean (one of the chefs) will just crank out different dishes for me and my date. Some are from the menu, some aren't. The prices are also very standard among sushi restaurants, averaging about $2.50 per piece of sushi. End your dinner with a bang and get a couple Uni shooters in a lemon! read more

Wow - I am the 10th Yelper to write a review of this place, which I assumed was only frequented by people in Southlake. I guess this speaks to the fact that there is just not much sushi in the area. I have not tried Cowtown, but after the other reviews I guess I will have to just to compare. I've gone to this place for 10 years and have rarely had something not good. My normal meal here is lunch, which is pretty busy. The Bento box (currently $13.95, but it varies) is always a good deal and will both fill me up and fulfill my taste of variety. There are quite a few good rolls, but nothing unique to here. I don't think it is as bad as other Yelpers have written, because like I said, the place has been open 10 years and still has a wait for a table on a weekend. In this area, bad food quickly spells the downfall of a place (just ask Po'Melvins, Lovers Egg Roll or Snookies). read more

The first time I had sushi was at Sushi Sam and I will remember it vividly. It was an experience for me, and since it was such a good experience I have ventured out to find more sushi restaurants. When I worked in Grapevine I would drive to Sushi Sam for lunch. This quickly became a biweekly tradition. The atmosphere was so inviting and the people were so friendly. I would usually get the bento box for lunch. It was easy and I would always ask what that day's special was. A few times I tried the tempura and chicken teriyaki. They also have a really good Udon. The seafood hot pot was a little scary for me at first, but I conquered that fear :) For dinner, I would recommend one of the sushi combinations. The presentation alone is worth it. read more

I am afraid I have to disagree with Preston just a little bit. Why? Because I have been *dying* for yakitori in Dallas. I found this place on google (a citysearch page). Why didn't I find it on yelp? Because its name is wrong on here. It's "Sushi Sam Yakitori Bar Japanese Restaurant". I pumped up a group of people to come out and try this style of cooking that I have been yapping about since I first had it at a brilliant little place in Irvine, CA. So I found this place. I got excited. I got there and asked for a menu while we waited for a table. The little young hostess chick looked at me like I was a madman when I asked for a yakitori menu. Shrugged, figured it was on the menu, walked outside to wait. There is no yakitori at this place. I was completely crestfallen. And I am being a little misleading. There is one dish ("chicken yakitori") as an appetizer. This place in it's own name says it's a freakin' Yakitori Bar. It is a lie, and I am sad. The only reason I didn't trash the place in rating is (obviously) we had to order sushi and it wasn't bad at all. If I was looking for sushi, I might go back. My stuff (nigiri) was good, fresh, and pretty tasty. The maki I tried was pretty reasonable as well. But I feel completely betrayed by the name --- it's a lie. read more

I tried sushi sam last night since yelp said that place was fab!!! I would have to agree. The service was nice and professional. The place was clean and a good amount of seating for the small restaurant. Sat the sushi bar had tuna roll, spider roll, salmon skin roll and some sashimi. All the items were fresh and a bonus was they gave complimentary cowboy rolls. I will be back again to try their other rolls. read more

Let me just start by saying: AMAZING!!!!!!!!! :) Seriously, I loved this spot! I eat sushi at least once a week and I'm not easy to please; I take into consideration the quality of fish, variety of options, service, and speed of delivery. Sushi Sam delivered on all accounts. I arrived around 7p on a Friday night expecting an ample wait time but luckily there was none. I chose to sit at the sushi bar for a more authentic experience and I'm glad I did; the sushi chefs are very friendly and even gave me a free sample roll since my friend took a long time to arrive ;) My server was very friendly, talking to me often, and gave me cucumber/onion mix to snack on before ordering. I ordered the sake sampler and was pleased-- nice variety! Once my friend arrived, I ordered the vegetable tempura entree (included rice, soup, and salad) and the Carroll roll. Absolutely delicious food all around!!! The Carroll roll is very unique, carb-free, and yummy. The fish was very fresh and great quality. I devoured the tempura/rice/soup. The environment is fun and yet family-friendly at the same time; a neat mix of people seem to come here. In fact, we chatted up the folks around us at the sushi bar; they were that friendly. My only "complaint" would be the drink named "Geisha" (something like that) because it tasted like sugar water :/ Oh well, that's the risk you take with mixed drinks. I thought this place had great sushi! Not as good as cowtown, but good nonetheless. The only downside was how pricey it was....it seems like such a nice laid back place, you'd think it'd be cheaper. Okay, this was my first try at sushi and I was told to go to Sushi Sam's. I did and I was not disappointed at all. I did get it to go simply due to the fact that I did not want to get ill in public if I didn't like it. Well I did not get ill however I did practically leak from every hole in my face! The wassabe and ginger were not explained to me. So that did take some getting used to. For newbe's I would say get the California rolls and then expand. This is a really good place, I went here about 3-4 months ago and just now got around to reviewing it. I have also visited off and on for years, it was the first place I ever ordered Unagi from that was an actual sushi bar some 10 years ago. The quality has improved quite a bit since then. Sushi Sam has a gorgeous, upscale Japanese themed atmosphere and some delightful entrees. Their Gyoza is delicious, they have a lovely Tempura combo, the Tonkatsu was pleasant albeit the standard frozen kind you find in most local Japanese restaurants. They have tasty Udon, great sushi and I still mean to try their Yakitori which as I understand it is their specialty. If they still have this on the menu, make sure to try their mango creme brulee. I had this last time I was there and still drool thinking about how good that was. The top was candied and everything. I had it at the Old Warsaw which is one of the finest/expensive restaurants in DFW and it couldn't remotely compare to how Sushi Sams' variant was. They don't have control and customers kept coming in even though there was not enough space. Area where Uber and others pick up is better set. I'm a regular so it is a huge disappointment. For a strip center location, they've done a nice job creating Japanese ambiance inside. Went here with the family and expecting traditonal sized sushi roll portions, we way over-ordered as not only were the pieces larger than most other sushi restaurants, but many came with more pieces as well. All selections were fresh and savory. Maguro is my "test of quality" order, and it passed--tender and flavorful. Service was efficient as they need it to be here due to small amount of tables... Bought the chicken teriyaki appetizer. Needless to say, mediocre chicken. Too small of a portion for the Cost $8 (+tax). Was not worth it for the price. At least they had a good amount of teriyaki sauce to flavor the chicken. Will have to give their sushi a try another say. Ah, it's an okay spot for sushi if you're in the Southlake area milling around. I wouldn't say ever that this would be my go to sushi spot. But I can support non chain, local type of places like this. They have some decent, but mostly standard type of rolls. The restaurant is small and mostly quiet...at least when I have been. I typically have some go to rolls that I get...the spicy tuna as well as salmon nigiri. The sushi chef and folks that work here are very sweet though. Overall...it's just alright. I've had better fish for sure. I feel the need to explore more sushi spots in Southlake just to compare. read more

Sushi Sam has the best and freshest sushi in town! I'm always pleased and never disappointed. I love how clean the restaurant is and the customer service is great. I absolutely love the seared peppercorn tuna. It melts in your mouth and is served on shaved ice to keep it fresh and cold and with an amazing sauce. I order it every sushi place go and there is no comparison cause Sushi Sam has the best! I also ordered the monster roll and volcano roll which were delicious. Ah, this Sushi place is great! Walking in, the place looks small, but depending on the time of day, it can get pretty lively in there. The waiters and waitresses are generally very nice, not your typical 'rude, angry asian' server stereotype. It's priced about right. I had two california rolls for about 11 dollars, I think. The tempera (or however it's called) roll is also very good! If you've never had sushi before, I definitely recommend coming here for your first time. Start out with the simple california roll before you start expanding to more exotic selections. read more

We were still able to walk in with no reservations and be seated immediately. Getting drink refills was a little slow but understandable due to it being busy. So I wouldn't particularly say this is a 4 star sushi place, more like 3.5 stars, but due to the fact that I was a tourist down there, celebrating a wedding, it put me in an extra cheery mood and I came away with a good feeling about this place. I've had my fair share of sushi up in the big mitten, but I've never had any sushi, or any food for that matter in Texas before. I've experienced good and bad sushi up in Michigan, so I feel as though I have a pretty good grasp of what entails good sushi. With that said, I think the sushi at Sushi Sam is pretty good. I feel like I kind of shorted Sushi Sam, as my cousin and I were in a huge hurry to get in, eat, and leave, because we had to pick someone up at the airport. We ordered the usually, spicy tuna, cali, avocado roll, and I ordered some tuna nigiri. The rolls were on the smaller side of the fence in terms of my experience with sushi, but not so much that it stood out. The rolls themselves were very tasty. I can't go too in depth about the intricacies of the flavor, due to the fact that we literally mowed the rolls down because of our time constraint. The best part of the meal was by far the nigiri. The tuna was a massive hunk, and I thought, jeepers, things must be bigger in Texas (pardon the clique add-in there). The tuna was also very tender and literally melted in my mouth. As a bonus, the sushi chef even gave us a complimentary roll, which probably by itself would be in the 12 dollar range. Overall, I would say I liked this place; if I were to go there again and not be in a rush, I would have a better analysis of the place, but I'm sure I would leave just as happy and just as satisfied. read more

Very disappointed in the food here. The reviews seem so positive but the results were less than desirable. We order sushi and the crab rangoon. The sushi was not put together well. The rice was falling apart too easily and the food tasted bland. The crab rangoon was mushy and the texture of the food was poor. Honestly, I have had better sushi from a grocery store. read more

Sushi Sam is the best sushi in Southlake, hands down. The service is always superb! Lawrence is a pro with those hot towels. He is also the go to guy for wine combinations with your sushi! Sean is always nice and has interesting rolls to try and doesn't even hold it against you if you almost run him over in the parking lot. The fish is fresh and delicious, and unlike most sushi restaurants they don't smother it in flavored mayo. Their yakitori is always flavorful and tender, too. The pepper tuna sashimi is always incredible. The ambiance evokes feelings of being in a family sushi restaurant. The lighting is warm with cute paper lanterns everywhere. I've always had a good experience at this place, the sashimi (salmon and tuna) are really fresh and the portions are of a reasonable size. There are four rolls I like and I normally stick with those (southlake, spider, dragon and crunch roll), the rolls have always been of a good size and the toppings are a good addition to the quality of the rolls. The staff is cordial and always provide you with a hot towel before you order, which is a good practice to cleanse your hands and switch your set of mind for mindful eating. There's a little salad they serve you while you look at the menu, just a few slices of cucumber but it is tasty and it helps me to calm my appetite while I browse through the menu... although I always order the same ones read more

Sushiii... Fish is not fresh at all here. That night I was feeling like something not contemporary, instead wanted something simple and good; therefore, ordered a Chirashi. The worst Chirashi I've ever had. Really, dish was getting slimy, it had imitation crab instead of the real thing, rice... Rice was disgusting, plain japanese rice with some sesame seeds on top. Hands down my favorite sushi in the area. I've tried just about everywhere in Southlake/Grapevine and nothing comes close. The fish always tastes extremely fresh. The tuna stack appetizer is BOMB! If you like spicy tuna give it a try! You won't regret it. They also have some great signature rolls. My kids love the kids meals and honestly it's amazing how much food they get.
