This was my second time here. We went on a Saturday evening. We were seated quickly. The place was obviously busy with lots of customers and takeout orders. We got our drinks and cucumber salad a little after we sat down. We had a woman taking care of us. We sat for a LONG time while making eye contact with every worker walking by. No one would stop and take our orders. Finally, a nice gentleman came by and did so. We ordered sauteed edamame, smoked salmon sashimi, salmon roll, spider roll, and beef teriyaki. The sauce on the edamame was burnt. The food came at different times. We basically ate one at a time. The beef teriyaki was good and tender. The sushi rolls were delicious. For example, I had order an Arnold Palmer and after polishing off the first one, I was given a refill without asking. When finished eating, I'd only drank maybe 1/3 of the refill, so I requested a to go cup for my drink. Instead of simply bringing me a to go cup, I was brought a to go with about 1/3 of an Arnold Palmer! That way my cup was full when I combined the two. It's the little things! I absolutely LOVE Sushi Sam. I have been a regular here for 10+ years and over that time the service, the sushi and the atmosphere has stayed the same. The servers have been working here for years and even though the menu has developed with the times, it is always delicious and I leave counting down the moments I can come back. No longer living in Southlake, I find an excuse to come here even if I'm even remotely in the area. My personal favorites are the Grapevine Roll, a tempura battered California Roll that is topped with a sweet eel-like sauce. The ahi tower, which cant be beat. The volcano roll with crawfish is also a must order. I also love that they serve boba tea now! Each plate of sushi is meticulously built and the sauces compliment the roll. It is clear that quality comes first here. I will say, Sushi Sam has gotten quite pricey over the years but I really dont care - you get what you pay for, and in this case you get some GREAT sushi! read more

Sushi Sam marks the 4th Japanese/sushi restaurant that we've hit on the Southlake Blvd strip. On a street populated with many food options (some of them direct competitors), I had some reservations that Sushi Sam would distinguish itself. However, I was very pleased with our visit, as demonstrated by the large spread of food that we ordered. From the moment we were seated, we felt welcomed, thanks in large part to a very attentive, experienced and friendly waitstaff. At no time during our stay did we feel neglected, especially on a busy weekend evening, which explains the number of regular patrons dining in. We started our meal with edamame and soft shell crab. The unshelled soybeans were standard steamed and lightly salted. The soft shell crab, not necessarily the best rendition we've tasted, was deep fried in a light golden brown batter, greasy tasting but crunchy. The mackerel and smoked salmon sashimi that we ordered were larger portions that advertised. Each slab of mackerel sat on a thin slice of lemon and dressed with a refreshing ponzu; the smoked salmon were thick and tasty slabs of fish that possessed a light smoke that was not overpowering. We did notice that most of the roll menu was dominated by traditional rice-based rolls, and very few riceless options (aside from the Butterfly Kiss which we only noticed late in our visit on the blackboard special). The Batman roll sounded better on paper--we felt the jalapeno and cilantro were overwhelmed by the inclusion of avocado. Much better were the Red Dragon roll drizzled with the sweet and tangy miso chili sauce and the Yu Darvish lobster and crab roll with mango and spicy sauce combo. We also liked Sushi Sam's version of the volcano roll, which came in one of 3 shellfish varieties: scallops, crawfish or mussels. Our scallop-topped rolls came in a bowl catching the yummy cream sauce. We would have liked a little more heat in the sauce, but it made a fantastic dip for every other roll we had on the table. Despite that we had quite a full table of food, we made room for the fried banana with honey and the cheesecake xango. The banana was tempura-fried in a fluffy batter, and the tart cheesecake roll (also fried) came with a side of lightly sweet red bean ice cream. Having read others reviews, I don't think its fair to write a glowing review of a place and then give them 4 stars because the items are a bit pricey. Don't think that's what the Star system is for. Anyway, I went to Sushi Sams with a bit of skepticism only because the name is a little campy and doesn't instill thoughts of a great sushi place. Names can be deceiving. Went to Sushi Sams, ordered a Sashimi platter for $20, Crab Rangones (sp?) and a Coke. The Sashimi sampler was not on the dinner menu but was on the Lunch menu so I didn't know what I would be getting. sushi places usually use the combo sashimi platters as a way to pawn off some stuff that no one wants or would order normally in sashimi. I once had a Sashimi combo platter that had squid and some really tough conch. Not the case here! Every piece of Sashimi was cold, fresh and melted in my mouth! Best sashimi platter I have had in a long time. Bravo (or should I say CAMPI!) to the chefs Crab Rangones were hot, fresh and delicious. Service to get a waitress was slow, service from order to food arriving was perfect. Not too much room for improvement and not bad enough to give 4 stars. Price? Not too bad, my biggest complaint as I am getting older is the price places are charging for a soft drink. $2.50 is a lot to pay for a Coke by any measure. Sorry. I know there is overhead involved and such but 4 liters of Coke at WalMart is $2.50 and when you are buying Coke from a distributor I am going to guess you could get 6 to 8 liters of Coke for $2.50 so it's just a bit overboard in my book. So next time I order a beer or drink water, not a black mark worthy of trying to find better sashimi! YUM! read more

My 2nd favorite sushi place in all of DFW. We live in Carrollton, so my #1 is Masu on Hebron out there, but my husband grew up in Southlake, and he introduced me to sushi at Sushi Sams. Our chiropractor also used to be next door, but he recently moved to Keller. ANYWAY, the sushi here is SUPER good! I've never had a problem with service, and the food is always top notch. VERY fresh nigiri. Skip sushi zushi down the way, that's not real sushi. Come to Sushi Sams for real, fresh sushi. read more

This place has really stepped it up as of late. I think with new competition in town they have a renewed focus. The quality of the sushi is much better than it was and the size of each piece is larger. Service is more efficient, although not all that friendly. If they have Goma, which is a steamed spinach appetizer, go for it. It has a sesame oil based sauce lightly drizzled on top and is always fresh and tasty when they have it. First time here. It was all very good. We sat at the sushi bar. The fish in the window looked sooo fresh and definitely was. The chefs did such a great job with all the orders we saw go out. We ordered the Cajun roll, Love me tender roll and the Lobster roll. All very good. Next time we will not get two fried rolls but that's just our choice, everything was good though. The only thing we did not really like per say was how the amount of spicy tuna on the lobster roll took away from the actual lobster flavor/concept and the amount of spicy Mayo/sriracha on the Cajun roll but that could just be us. My husband got the omelette-wrapped shrimp fried rice. He really liked it and it was a large portion that he split over two days. He also got a sushi roll - I don't remember the name anymore but it was a basic one. He enjoyed that also. I got a teriyaki dinner - chicken and tempura shrimp with tempura vegetables. Very good, but the chicken was just a little tough. The inside of the restaurant looked very charming and there was a small bar - it's too bad we're not doing any dining in right now. Our first trip to Sushi Sam was a huge success. The place is nicely decorated and the wait staff was pleasant and knowledgeable. But most importantly, the sushi was fresh, nicely presented and the portion sizes were big. We started off with two pieces each of unagi and smoked salmon. The portion size of each was really big and probably double the size of many other sushi places. The caterpillar roll was next and it was good but a little on the sweet side. The lobster roll came next and it was our favorite one....it's a cooked roll but it did not have that overly fried taste. Last, we got the mixed volcano roll and it was delicious and the pieces of mushroom and scallops were big and tasty. We can't really say anything was bad....it was all very very good. I would highly recommend that you try this place and I feel it is one of the better sushi restaurants in the Southlake / Keller area. read more

This place was so delicious. So why not five stars? The greeter at the front ruined it for me. She didn't ask how many in our party she just blankly looked at us and then pointed. She rushed off, sat the menu's on the table and peaced out. She didn't say a word. It was really awkward. The service after that was pretty good. I ordered the udon with vegetable tempura and my husband had the katsu. We also got an order of sashimi. Mmmm. The fish was so fresh. The udon was very authentic. My husband said the katsu was pretty tasty. The vegetable tempura was interesting(in a good way). There was a selection of items: brocolli, squash, carrot, potato... There was also a tempura fried onion. Omg it was like a cracked out onion ring. It was perfect. My husband was scared to eat it so I gobbled it right up. It is a little pricey so unfortunately we can't make this a weekly spot. It's gotta be a special occasion type of place, but if you are looking for quality food this is the place. During the pandemic we've tried to support local restaurants by ordering takeout. We tried sushi Sam for takeout for the first time tonight and am completely appalled with the way we were treated - placed an order through their website which uses zing at 6:30 pm. Arrived at 6:45 a little early for our scheduled delivery time but let them know we had arrived (ordered two different sushi options) They said my order wasn't received and blamed the online service. I asked them to check again they came back and said it was just received but it would be at least 40 mins - there was only one person standing outside the restaurant in front of me. I asked why and they said they had phone orders and door dash orders - I clarified saying I was standing there waiting - I placed an order at this point nearly half an hour ago why couldn't they move to the front. They just looked at me, and then proceeded to ignore my questions and only help new arriving customers. read more

We were really looking forward to try this place.. but... not worth it. Every foods were over priced. I dont mind to pay a lot if it is good quality food.. But...but... they are just expensive. Roll was nothing special and white tuna nigiri was very bad and not fresh. Chinese sushi chef chattered on endlessly and very loudly. It bothered us a lot. They should lower their voice and should focus to make good food. They gave us hot hand towel with plastic container for us to clean hands before eating. First It was good but .. Their plastic container was dirty.. seriously??hmm.. I will never ever go to this restaurant again. Not recommend here anybody. read more

We went and visited Sushi Sam this past Thursday because of the number of positive reviews we had been seeing on Yelp. We arrived a little later in the evening and the restaurant was still hopping, a testimony of it's strong following in the Southlake area. We ordered four different Sushi rolls. The sushi was good and or course fresh, We also ordered the Crab Rangoon as an appetizer. I was impressed with the Crab Rangoon, the size of the portion was very generous. They are taking an egg roll wrapper and turning it into a wonton filled with crab meat and cream cheese. The sushi rice was underseasoned in my opinion, leaving the sushi a little underflavored overall. The staff were very attentive during our meal and checked on us multiple times to make sure that we had everything we needed and to refill drinks. Our one problems is that we were seated at a small table for two each roll came out on a separate large plate. We really did not have enough room to hardly fit all the plates on the table making me a little claustrophobic during the meal. read more

It seemed raw and unappetizing. Our order of unagi had hard fine bones in it that got caught in the back of my throat. Stinging sensation for a bit. Seaweed salad portion was quite small. It's now 7:15 and I'm STILL WAITING on that damn meal. I am about to walk out. Quality of food is OK. Not great, but OK. Service is absolutely TERRIBLE. How can they not squeeze in a SIMPLE order of fried shrimp and rice and soup (already prepared and just needs to be packed in the back)? Came here cuz it was supposedly the 'go-to-sushi-joint' in town... so off we go to check it out. I was skeptical about this placed so ordered some cooked rolls to be safe.. one of them had crab meat. The roll arrived. It was imitation crab meat! I asked the chef if the next time we ordered it if we could get real crab meat and he looked at me like I was nuts, laughed a bit and said they don't ever use the real deal. Ultimately, the sushi rice was too mushy. Service was unpolished (multiple times, the waitresses reached over me and once her uniform came close to touching my face!) and for a Japanese restaurant to serve anything but real raw seafood freaks me out. Sushi Sam has been the family sushi spot for 10 years. The staff is friendly, attentive and always willing to make the customer happy. The fish is always fresh and in talking to the head chef Sean you can tell the passion he brings to the job and his sushi knives. I recommend the cowboy roll, lizard roll and you can't go wrong with the peppered tuna sushimi. Price is comparable to other sushi restaurants in the area but the quality/service is a higher level. read more

I waited over 45 min and then I finally asked "is my food almost ready yet?" One of the hostess looks over at the table where the take out food is. She says "yes it's right here." So I asked her "has that order been sitting there for a while and you didn't say anything to me?" She giggles "yes I think so." I was so angry that I waited over 45 min for my food and they saw me waiting there. I asked to talk to the manager and after waiting another 10 min to talk to him/her. The hostess came back and said the manager was too busy to talk to me and gave me a coupon for 20% off next time. 20% off coupon is such a load of crap for making me wait 45 minutes for nothing. Their service is absolutely horrendous and did not even care. Manager had no interest in even trying to make amends.
