I saw a post about this place from a neighbor on Nextdoor, and when I looked at the menu, I noticed they had vegan sushi options, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Since my uncle was visiting, I went with him and my mom today. We got there just as they were opening, and there were already three parties inside. We were greeted and seated pretty quickly. The interior is kind of small, but the tables don't feel crowded together, which is nice. The waitress/hostess was very friendly and helpful. I asked if the wakame (seaweed salad) was vegan, and she checked with the chef to confirm. She even mentioned that my uncle's roll wasn't vegan when I took it from him to take a picture. I let her know that I just wanted to take pictures of the food, and it was easier to have it on my side of the table. I appreciate that she checked in to make sure I didn't accidentally eat a non-vegan food. They have a vegetarian roll section toward the back of the menu with 3-4 rolls labeled as vegan. I decided to get the Spicy Vegan Tofu roll and wakame. My uncle got the Super Lion King and Lemon Calamari appetizer, and my mom got a Bento with Short Ribs and Mix Tempura. My family really enjoyed their food; my mom loved the salad dressing and everything else in her bento, and my uncle really liked the calamari and his roll. I loved the wakame! It was flavorful, and the seaweed was crisp and refreshing. The roll was good too. I liked the crispy lotus chips on top; they made the presentation really nice. I kind of wish the roll was a bit saucier, but wasabi and soy sauce did the trick. I have notes about the timing of things. The vegan options came out really fast, but everything else took a while. I noticed that the chef changed the plastic wrap between rolls, which I very much appreciate. I understand baked rolls take time, but my mom's bento and the calamari appetizer were the last things at the table. I had already finished 90% of my food by the time the entire order was at our table. They give out complimentary ice cream at the end of the meal, you can choose between vanilla and matcha. Since I'm vegan, I did not try it, but my mom and uncle thought it was tasty. As we were leaving the restaurant was starting to get packed, there were even two parties waiting outside. I love when the community shows up for small local businesses! Timing issues aside, I really enjoyed it here and will definitely come back due to the thoughtful service and overall freshness of the vegan options. read more

Saw some reviews which made this new restaurant promising and it was alright. They gave edamame to start which was nice! Sushi was fresh, I think I'd go for sushi here next time for sure! Bento box was pretty good. Had the chicken katsu with gyoza - I didn't like that the gyoza was deep fried, was expecting pan fried. The miso soup had very little tofu and seaweed and was a bit overly salty. The Niku Udon was interesting - I didn't like the beef cubes. The soup was a bit on the sweeter end. Udon was chewy. I wouldn't get this again. Friendly and quick service. Free ice cream at the end of the meal. read more

Food: 5 stars: Sushi! All of the sashimi we got was fresh and nicely cut. The sushi taco was a highlight! Super unique and surprisingly the flavors worked well together. 3 stars: "non sushi" (katsu, tempura, udon, etc) items were average at best. The udon soup was EXTREMELY salty, to the point where I'm not sure if they accidentally 10x'ed the sodium in their recipe... Service: I believe they are still in soft opening phase, but their service could use some improvement. For example, we were shown to our table and they acknowledged that we needed 2 high chairs. However, the server proceeded to pour our water and grab our utensils and edamame. We stood around for 3 minutes before getting the high chairs ourselves. Normally restaurants will ensure their guests are properly seated first, especially those with babies who can't stand on their own. Good intentions, possibly just inexperienced. read more

IMHO When our first-choice lunch spot became unavailable, we saw Sushi Tani's "soft opening" sign across the street. Why not? We love Japanese food! This is a cute, 7-table restaurant, with one waiter and three chefs (at least during our visit.) Their sushi menu is extensive, but I'm a bento girl. They only have a choice of a two-combo bento, but the price is competitive. Lunch bentos run $14.95, while dinner bentos cost $17.95. Some proteins can be an additional charge. My friend and I both opted for Short Rib BBQ and Mixed Tempura Bento Boxes, $17.45, due to the short rib added charge. My friend also added the Chef's Special Sushi Taco (2 pcs.) for $9.95. It took 20 minutes before any food arrived at our table, due to the packed restaurant. We eventually received a complimentary small bowl of edamame, which I wish had been chilled. The water carafe held lukewarm water, not refreshing at all. My bento arrived first. It looked delicious and inviting! Everything was yummy! I loved the soft fluffy rice. The BBQ short ribs were flavorful and tender. The Sushi Tacos looked fantastic and were quickly devoured. It wasn't until we were almost done that I realized we never received the miso soup that comes with our bentos! At that point, we didn't ask for it. However, the complimentary green tea ice cream was a welcome replacement! Service was genuinely friendly but there were service hiccups with missing menu items, and special requests forgotten. For the 10 pc Omakase Nigiri for $41.95 OR Deluxe Chirashi for $39.95! Quietly opening last weekend, Sushi Tani took over I Heart Bento. It's a small space with 6 tables and very limited staffing so they cannot handle the volume if it becomes inundated. F O O D * Complimentary Edamame Served chilled, it was a nice starter freebie. * Aburi Hamachi Toro (4 pc-$18) Large cuts of fatty hamachi belly, slightly torched and garnished with a dash of soy and kizami wasabi. Fresh and hella delicious. * Shrimp Tempura App (5 pc - $9.95) Not mine, but I tried one. The shrimp was fresh and snappy, but the batter was a little soft and lacked that light, crispy crunch I look for in tempura. I think using club soda in the batter and frying at a higher temp could've helped give it a crispier texture. * Chicken Teriyaki + Beef Teriyaki Bento w/ rice, salad, miso soup ($17.95) -- Choose 1 item from A + B = $14.95 -- Choose 2 items from A (double protein) = $17.95 Cooked medium rare by default, the beef teriyaki was soft and tender, while the chicken thigh had a nice charred edges. * Deluxe Chirashi ($39.95) A great value, the chirashi included hirame, hamachi toro, kanpachi, sake toro, hotate, amaebi w/ fried head, otoro, hokkaido uni, ikura, and tamago. All the fish were fresh, firm, and buttery with drops of yuzu soy and kizami wasabi. I like that they included a handful of nori sheets for DIY handroll. The shari was quite plain and needed more seasoning to make it stickier. * Complimentary Green Tea Ice Cream S E R V I C E Very friendly service from the lone server. It was a hot day, so I really appreciated the large carafe of ice-cold water, and she even kindly brought TT and Biscotti their own water bowls. Food takes awhile. Even at opening time and being the only customers at the time, the chirashi took over 30 minutes. Went here for date night with my husband and we were so pleased! We visited during their soft opening at dinner time and there was plenty of parking in their lot. They still had the old establishment's signage so keep an eye out for I Heart Bento when looking for Sushi Tani. We were seated immediately upon arrival and I believe they only had one host/server who was hustling with all the tables. Since it's their soft opening, be patient! They had bar seating but it didn't look like it was available at the time-maybe in the future. We ordered edamame to start while we mulled over the menu. They had the standard sushi restaurant fare and the menu was quite large. My husband got the Tekka Toro-Tasting Don and I got a special roll that had salmon, mango, shrimp tempura, eel sauce, and fried onions (I can't remember what it was called). Our items were delicious, fresh, and so filling. My husband's toro came in such thick cuts so he was quite happy. My roll came with the perfect amount of spicy mayo and eel sauce on top. The fried onions also added a nice crunch and texture. We had plans to continue our date night out and get ice cream but they must've read our mind and our server came out with green tea ice cream on the house! Heart full, bellies fuller. In a word: WOW! Tried this new sushi restaurant in our neighborhood (at the site of the former I Heart Bento, RIP) on De Anza Blvd. According to the server, it just opened last week Friday (Aug 21), so they still have a Soft Opening sign posted out front. The restaurant is small but mighty! There were about 6 tables for dining in, and nearly all were full tonight for our Saturday night dinner. There were also a few to-go orders being placed. We were immediately greeted and seated, and given a carafe of water, a complimentary small bowl of edamame, and ginger/wasabi dishes. The menu was extensive so we had a hard time choosing! For 3 of us, we ordered two Sushi Tani Dinner Bentos (one with chicken teriyaki and mixed tempura, and the other with chicken katsu and avocado maki rolls), a 49er Cut Roll and a Chicken Karaage appetizer. The bentos were served with miso soup, rice and salad. I've been to MANY Japanese restaurants, and dare I say this was probably the best miso soup I've ever had! Flavorful without being too salty, and enhanced with seaweed and small tofu chunks. The fried food (chicken karaage, tempura and chicken katsu) all had good, light batters and weren't greasy! The chicken teriyaki was delicious with a nice char to it. The 49er Cut Roll was huge! All portions were very generous and easily shareable. Because the restaurant is small and they only seemed to have one chef and one sushi chef, the plates come out one at a time vs. all at once, but it wasn't too bad of a wait. Service was attentive and friendly. Waitress even apologized because they ran out of plates and said the dishwasher was working on it now! Guess they didn't expect the large crowd. Pricing was very fair. We were even served complimentary ice cream (choice of vanilla or green tea) for dessert! Not sure if this is all the time or just for the Soft Opening. Sunday night family dinner, we explored and found this soft opening Japanese restaurant "Sushi Tani"-- so soft that the old sign is still here. Inside clean and neat design, about 26 seats. The staff is really friendly and we got greeted and flexible to pick the table we prefer. The menu is delicate design with descriptive pictures which really helpful with kids. My kids enjoyed their food a lot, unagi don, salmon nigiri , mixed tempura .... And I liked the Alaska roll, also the chicken katsu -- crispy outside and juicy inside. Meanwhile, the price is reasonable here. Specially the staff offered us house treats: ice cream . Definitely we would like to come back and try more. We ordered a Chirashi Deluxe Don and an Omakase Tasting. All the fish were excellent, tasted fresh. For the price point, compared to other similar sushi places, seems to be on the pricier end however the chirashi deluxe don gets you the bang for your buck with the portion and quality. I'm so happy this place opened. I work in the same complex and was waiting for them to open. I was not disappointed! Everyone is super friendly. I had take-out. I am picky about sushi. The 2 things that stood out to me above everything else was the sushi is really good and the pricing is really reasonable. So I can't really find a reason why you shouldn't try it out! My first low review :( unfortunately we were really disappointed with our first visit here. We ordered two omakase boxes, but only one was brought out. We assumed the second was still being prepared, so we waited to eat together. About 20 mins later, our waitress came over and asked if we were waiting for anything. When we told her we were still waiting for the second box, she checked the system and realized she had forgotten to put the order in. She told us the chef would start working on it, but about 10 mins later came back and said it would now be another 40-min wait because so many other tables had ordered the omakase box. We asked if ours could be prioritized since the delay was due to the ordering mistake, but she said no. Shortly after, we watched the chef finish an omakase box and they gave it to another table. At that point, we ended up canceling the second box and shared the one we had because we didn't want to wait another 40 minutes. What was most disappointing was there was no attempt to make up for the mistake or the experience. Mistakes happen, and we completely understand that, but I would have expected some effort to make things right. My fiance and I were in the area looking for a place to eat and found this listing on Yelp - we caught them during their soft opening week. We ordered two surprise sushi boxes that come with a spread of sushi/sashimi, and each box comes with two chef selected dishes, so we received 4 total dishes on top of the sushi. The whole meal was fantastic! They started off with the chef selected dishes and some edamame - there was a lovely light salad made of julienned cucumber, purple cabbage, and apples that help whet our appetites; then a dish of marinated raw fish with mango and onion similar to a poke; agedashi tofu; and karaage - all quite tasty and filling! By the time we got to the karaage we knew there'd be sushi coming up so we saved the rest of the chicken to take home. Last but not least, the sushi itself was fantastic - a mix of nigiri and sashimi of various sorts, with fatty cuts of tuna that were buttery and melt in your mouth!
