While vacationing in Charleston I expected to have some great contemporary American food with a touch of Southern flair. I expected to try some great craft beer from the local breweries and hipster draft houses. What I did not expect was to find some of the best sushi I ever had. And yet, walking into Sushi Taro at 9PM on a Sunday night, that is exactly what I got.
My wife and I were looking to get away from the burgers and gastropub fare we had been eating and go light and Asian. But it seemed like every place we looked at was closed on Sundays. Then we stumbled on Sushi Taro - open until 10PM, their website said. It was almost 8:30, so we got ourselves tidy and head over. With one couple just finishing, we were the last couple dining that evening, save for one take out order. And at first the service felt a bit rushed, and I was a bit concerned that they only served us one miso soup and salad. We only ordered one combo (sashimi platter) that came with soup and salad, but most sushi places I go to will bring you both if you order as many rolls and sashimi as we did. We added an order of the toro, bluefin tuna, and king mackerel sashimi to the order, and four rolls to round out their meal.
The miso soup here was excellent ... not overpowering on the miso in the broth, giving a hearty flavor. And the dressing on the salad was also clean and subtle - some places can overpower you with ginger in their dressing. This was refined and restrained. Things were starting off on a good note. And that continued when we got our sashimi platter. My wife loved the salmon and white tuna. I focused on the tuna, seared pepper tuna, and red snapper. All were great, especially the seared tuna. But the thing that had giddy was a small touch ... instead of the platter being layered with daikon, there was a shredded red vegetable in place. Could that be ... BEETS? I LOVE BEETS. And those shredded beets had such nice umami flavor ... so much better than having daikon.
And then the next plate with the toro. Oh my, the toro. Yes, it was like $16 for two pieces, but I'm on vacation ... I'm allowed to splurge. And the pieces were huge and melted like butter. The bluefin tuna chunks were HUGE, and the freshest tasting tuna I have ever had. The king mackerel chunks were also huge and so tasty. The rolls were also outstanding. My wife got a rainbow dragon roll (she loves her eel) and a Philly roll, and I enjoyed one of the chef special rolls that had the seared pepper tuna, eel, avocado, and salmon. Another bonus ... they offer flavoring "shots" for their hot sake. I enjoy a nice hot sake ... but I enjoy it more when it has green apple flavoring that makes it taste like a sour apple Jolly Rancher.
The seafood quality was so awesome here, I asked for an order of uni for my "dessert". I felt bad because they were cleaning up for the night, and when the server said they were out of uni, I thought it might have been because they wanted to push us out. But while our server was in the back, the sushi chef explained to us that they sell a lot of uni on Saturday nights, and a new order was coming in the next day. And the server brought us out an house dessert - a very nice brownie with ice cream on top. My wife and I definitely appreciated the gesture, and we felt like this could be our regular sushi spot if we lived in this area.
Charleston-area locals ... if you are struggling to find a great sushi spot and haven't given Sushi Taro a try, I highly recommend that you do so. I've eaten at some great sushi spots in both DC and Southern California, and Sushi Taro is as good as they come. read more
