I was so disappointed in my food from here. I bought 3 items. I threw 2 in the trash. I choked down the 3rd because I was ravenous. It was a lobster roll. The lobster was too chewy. It was like trying to chew rubber bands. The soup was awful. Perhaps the worst soup that I've ever had. It had this disgusting very fishy taste. All in all, it was simply bad. read more

Pleasantly surprised at how well this place delivers multiple forms of Asian cuisine! We had shu mai, gyoza, pad Thai, and several selections of sushi rolls- all very yummy. I've been coming to Sushi Taro for the sushi lunch for over 5 years and still love it. Stopped by today and they are being very covid safe (wearing masks, outdoor dining only, order through a plastic divider), which I respect! 3 rolls + soup and salad for $12...can't beat that! My bf got a bento box and loved their spicy sauce. Lots of food for the price and value! Great quality! If I still lived in SC, I'd continue to dine here several times a month. This is the second time I've gone to this restaurant because it didn't make a good impression on me the first time so I thought I'd give it another shot. Literally the absolute, worst sushi restaurant I have ever visited! I am not kidding nor exaggerating!!! I don't understand other people who liked this and gave it a good review because the first thing I noticed is I felt dirty walking in there. It is grimy. I got seated at a table and hardly anybody spoke a word English, and they were extremely hard to understand, which I don't mind, but I do mind if they didn't understand a word I was saying, so I resorted to pointing, and nodding, which, in the end still didn't help them getting just 2 dishes right. I ordered the tuna tartare and three different nigiri. The tuna tartare was the ugliest plate of pure disaster that looked like it came out of a dog food can. I dissected it, and there were literally four tiny little pinky nail sized tuna pieces in that awful dish. I sat in front of that plate for 20 minutes with an empty glass of water and nobody paid attention, and when they brought my nigiri, it was wrong and looked like a five year old prepared it, not somebody who should call himself a sushi chef. I told them that "I would like to send back the tuna tartare, but I'll just hold onto the nigiri" because I was starving and extremely frustrated and by the time I got anything to eat... I courteously finished that plate and they picked up the empty plate and immediately put the check on the table... Good to see what motivates them to go a little faster ! I will never set foot in that restaurant again and I recommend going anywhere else, Maybe Burger King if you can find one and order sushi there... I bet it would be better than their crap. read more

One of our families favorite places to eat. We especially like the lunch menu and have enjoyed the lunch bowls, bento box, and sushi specials. Consistently good food and good service. Love the music they play here, & the staff are attentive and friendly. My favorite items are the Hibachi grilled items, as I've tried shrimp and chicken on 2 recent visits. The food is served hot, and the portions are worth the price. In fact it starts with a salad & miso soup. The menu has other options to consider, including pad thai, Bento boxes, and other noodle dishes. But the reason I return is the freshness and taste of the food. I yelped places that were open late for dinner because we spent our only full day just exploring the heck out of Charleston and didn't feel like stopping to dress for a reservation only restaurant and I'm so glad we didn't. This place was a great find for us; not only did we avoid the loud crowds, but we found some really great food! The service was perfection. Our server was attentive but not hovering. The place is intimate and even has a touch of elegance, but you you feel comfortable being casual. The food is definitely more than casual. Lots of love and attention go into each dish. We began with soup and salads. The salad was simple, with just greens and dressing. I had no time to be disappointed, because that was really all that was needed. The ginger dressing was among the best I'd ever eaten. The garlic soy shrimp were incredible. The shrimp were cooked perfectly with just a little crispy sear on the edges. The sauce had a depth of flavor and needed nothing to punch it up. The orange chicken was also incredible. The chicken was lightly fried in a tempura batter and coated in a sweet but also savory sauce and served with fried rice. My daughter got sushi which was fresh and flavorful. We were all ready to leave when the server brought over a complimentary mini brownie with a scoop of ice cream. A nice sweet touch to end a really great meal. We left very happy. read more

We've been here multiple times and it has been a very good experience both times! Fresh and interesting Sushi, lots of variety, family-friendly but also a date place. I enjoyed the Lady Lobster roll. It was sushi that was actually wrapped in lobster! Just the right spice and flavor. My kids like this place too! The edimame is always a hit, but the crab cheese wonton is very tasty. I wish they had Asahi beer, but a large Sapporo will do the trick! The teriyaki chicken is a winner too. The sauce doesn't overpower it. It's tender and good. What a neat little spot located behind Harris Teeter & Hobby Lobby next to the new Six Apartments. I had a yearning for fish one night & since I saw all the tables outside, full of people I thought I'd give it a try. The sushi was perfect fresh, authentic and lots of it for the price. The staff are sweet and ever so helpful. I really enjoyed my experience here apart from the mosquito's outside. Not their fault for sure. Inside was jam packed so that was not an option. On the plus side you can bring your pooch & sit outside if mosquitoes are not an issue. I've not really heard of Sushi Taro as an option for dinner. I guess it gets lost in the abundance of sushi restaurants around with higher profiles, but you should definitely give it a try. It's family owned and I just love to support local. read more

Arrived on time to find that our table was not ready. There is no room to stand and wait in this restaurant without being in the way of the serving staff. After being jostled for 15 minutes we were finally seated. The food is conistently good at this place but they simply can not handle a standard dinner rush on a Friday night. Because the place is small, it tends to be very noisy on a busy evening and this is only further complicated by a manager who is yelling at the servers across the dining area the entire evening. He is oblivious to the fact that he is standing next to the customers while he bellows out commands to the serving staff. There are several good sushi places in town and I will choose to visit the others rather than put up with an unpleasant dining atmosphere. read more

The worst seafood restaurant I have ever been to. Took the family for lunch and the only thing that was even decent was the fried Admirals platter. Those of us wanting fresh seafood were left disappointed. Crab dip appetizers were unseasoned and tasted canned. Crab cakes taste frozen. Red rice tastes pre-made. Shrimp and grits were instant and lumpy. Grilled shrimp was rubbery it was so over cooked. The worst part, is the health concern here. There is visible mold and water dripping from the ceiling. We placed our order online which was very easy and convenient. They have a HUGE menu with so many options. They also have a coupon online for 10% off on their website. Only annoyance is that you must print it. After placing your order it doesn't tell you how long your order will be ready in. I called and the person said "I don't know, a few minute." I asked again and was told 10-15 min. We got our food 30 minutes after I called to ask how long. The space is pretty large and was busy when we went to pick up. We ordered green gyoza, spicy crunchy salmon maki, Boston maki, scam roll, Hokkaido roll, and a dragon roll. All the sushi was really good. This is our favorite go to place in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Hands down and not even close. Great food, great service and consistent every single time. This place has phenomenal sushi, great scallops, steak and chicken, as well as a tasty gyoza and miso soup. Everything from beginning to end is just top notch. We have visited every popular steak, seafood and downtown Charleston haunts, but Sushi Taro always comes out as the best food, service and price.
