This was the third time I've eaten at Sushi Tei and it is consistently good. I tried something new to me and that was the Salmon Katsu Don, a breaded fried salmon filet that was on a bed of rice and topped with an egg, cooked onions and a light sauce. It came very quickly and was a generous portion. Kind of reminded me of a hot pot, tasted wonderful. I also got an appetizer with salmon, mango and cucumber that was light and tasty, but very challenging to eat with chopsticks. The hubs got hibachi flounder that came with lots of sides including a dessert that was a pudding topped with strawberry jelly. I ordered mochi, a rice dough wrapped ice cream ball. Our server was super nice and I was able to get one green tea and one mango flavored mochi that was topped with a dollop of whipped cream, sprinkles and a marathon cherry. They also have free WiFi (you have to give them your email address, clever. I unsubscribed after the first time I got an email from them). All in all it was a great meal and we will return. read more

Just ordered at this place while visiting a friend over the weekend. I ordered the M.Mango Roll & the Mexican Roll. I can honestly admit it truly is the best sushi in Albany (& the best I've had yet). When I went inside the restaurant to pick up my food the girl at the counter was nice (& it also didn't hurt that she was CUTE) & the interior looked great for those who wanted to dine in. The food is fantastic. Delicious, fresh, great selection. The service is horrible. We had a large table and some had their entrees and some had appetizers, which came out after the entrees. There was no rhyme or reason. We had to repeatedly remind the server of what dishes we were still missing. But the shocker of the night: one at our table ordered three rolls. When they arrived, he said to me, "looks like they gave me your order." We told the server that we thought he got the wrong order. The server said no. So he started eating his dinner. After a while the server comes back (I hadn't gotten my meal yet) and takes this man's plate, stating there was a mix up in the food. He brings back a plate for me with the eaten roll on it! When I questioned if he really was going to give me food that had been on someone else's plate and partially eaten, his response was that only one piece had been eaten. Omg!! He finally, with reluctance, had the chef make me a new roll. Unbelievable! Despite being delicious, the experience was not one that I'd like to repeat. We'll take our dining elsewhere. read more

My husband and I come here at least once every few weeks to get our sushi fix. I'll admit, we haven't tried very many things on their menu other than the usual bento, udon, roll combos, and occasionally their weekly special, but that's because these items are so good we always end up getting the same thing every time we're there. Their sushi is delicious! I've tried several of their rolls, and white tuna avocado is my favorite. Their udon broth is super savory and hearty, and their bento boxes are very filling. We always go during lunch time to take advantage of their lunch special prices. I also notice a lot of native Japanese people frequent this restaurant a lot and many of them are regulars, which I think speaks somewhat to the restaurant's quality and authenticity. The staff is also very friendly! As I mentioned already, I've only ever eaten here during lunch time. Depending on the day of the week, it's either completely empty or bustling with customers (usually on Fridays). It's a pretty small restaurant, and can only accommodate no more than probably 30 people, so if you don't want to wait, I'd go on a weekday before noon. read more

Perhaps one of the few places that you can get decent Japanese food from in Albany. The place is quite cozy and quiet on the day I went, I was more craving the rice dishes instead of sushi. We ordered the donburi dishes, they tasted a bit bland and the onion/rice beneath the meat was a bit soggy. There were more onion than anything else in the bowl. Despite the small flaws, the servers were very attentive and they frequently came by to refill our cups with tea. They even gave us candles for the birthday cake we brought in. I would definitely come back to this place to try out the other stuff on the menu. read more

I've ordered take-out probably 5 times now and couldn't be happier. I'm simple and usually stick to the basic sushi and sashimi. It's surprisingly good quality, much better than similar establishments in the area - and it's consistent. Service is also a strong point, they have been averaging 15 minutes prep time and the staff has always been friendly. One of my favorites here is the vegetable tempura. It's a simple dish, but with a good selection of vegetables and proper frying, it's off the charts. Tonight I decided to try the spider roll, that was clearly the right decision. I still can't believe how much soft shell crab they stuffed into this thing. I can't speak for the quality or authenticity of all of their dishes, but sushi and appetizers so far exceeded expectations. No one else comes close around this price point. You can pay more at some restaurants, but I just don't think you are getting something better, at least not around here. read more

I have been to about a dozen different places and Sushi Tei is my favorite sushi place in the albany area (though there are a ton of close seconds). Waitresses are friendly and fast, and the sushi is fresh and amazing. I like how this place as a slight fusion mix (you can make any roll 'crunchy' or try one of their special rolls). Prices are slightly lower then the average in the area. I highly recommend the sushi tei roll, (shrimp tempura and avacodo with crab and a spicy sauce on top) I go at least twice a month, and I am never disappointed. read more

Been here several times, renovated in January 2017 looks phenomenal. Staff is friendly and PLENTY which is refreshing for a small shop. You never have to wait for service or a refill. This is our favorite place for sushi in the capital region AND ramen (after tasting 3 times I can confirm now). Sushi is so fresh here- although now there's lots of places around Albany for good sushi. Ramen is sadly only available on Tuesdays and Sundays, however is leagues better than any other ramen shop around (you know which one I'm talking about). Sadly, this restaurant is a bit of a drive otherwise it'd be a regular spot for us. read more

Went out to eat here yesterday with my wife. Started with a seaweed salad (refreshing) and pork gyoza soup (very rich and enjoyable). Got the Angel Roll, Sushi Tei Roll and an avocado, mango and cucumber roll. All the rolls were decent. They weren't blow-your-socks-off amazing; they were just good. Given the promised ingredients, I was expecting more nuanced flavors; I also wondered exactly how freshly made the rolls were. Again, not that they were bad, but just not good enough to get a five-star rating. Service was very good from where I sat. The waitress was friendly, extremely helpful and nonintrusive. Came here on a Monday night thinking that I could order a hot bowl of ramen and a satisfying sushi roll. Come to find out, they don't serve ramen on Monday's, only Tuesdays.so I settled for sushi only. I was excited about the listing of sushi they had but almost in each roll they had something I did not want In it. So I settled for cali roll and dragon roll. The dragon roll was almost inedible. Like I had crunchy shell that would not go away or dissolve. I mean that's the whole point of a soft shell crab to be able to eat the whole thing. I was spewing out bits and pieces of that shell here and there. Not to mention the rolls were huge. I mean they alway serve dragon rolls huge and I hate that it's done that way because you can't eat it in one bite but that's the best part of sushi one bite. Lemme just begin by saying, I'm Japanese, so I've never dined at a restaurant for the sake of getting Japanese food in the US besides NYC. This is the first time outside of NYC I got Japanese food. By Japanese standards, this place gets a below average, but who are we kidding, we live in Albany. I was definitely not disappointed (I had pretty low standards) from the decoration which felt very Japanese, to the waitress who was also Japanese (or Japanese American). If the sushi bar had ran the whole right side of the restaurant, with tall sitting chairs along the sushi bar, this place would've hit it dead on to what Japanese sushi places are really like. It also doesn't flounder around with different cuisines (sticks to just Japanese), which is pretty admirable. The Japanese waiter also greets you with "irrashai" but it really should be "irrashai mase," to be more formal and respecting to the customers (and Japan is all about respect). So to be honest, they do a good enough job to remind me of Japan that they get a 5 in their presentation. I went during lunch so I got their bento specials, which again, bentos are legit Japanese so thumbs up. The menu makes it seem like there's more food than there really is (comes with the entree you choose plus salad, miso soup, fruit, and a "roll" of sushi). Just keep in mind that it comes in a bento box, so the portions are tiny. The roll of sushi is just 4 pieces, which makes me think, how many pieces did the chef eat? Or it makes me think it must be one small seaweed piece. But I think even having that option in the bento meal is pretty awesome. Besides, small quantity is again, pretty Japanese. I got the Tonkatsu, which is my favorite Japanese dish. The sauce was good. It came with a bowl to grind the sesame seeds to mix with the sauce, which I've never done before for tonkatsu, and is pretty unnecessary, but it was fun either way. It also came with the karashi, and when I asked for more of it, she understood what I was saying, so she knows her stuff. The karashi itself was really mild. I'm not sure if they make their own stuff, but I was slightly disappointed on how unspicy it was. I got the salmon and avocado roll and tried the spicy tuna crunch roll. They were both pretty good. The rice seemed somewhat lose, but it kept well enough to dip in the soy sauce without falling apart. It tasted fresh, but I think it lacked some subtle vinegar taste in the rice, but if they were going for mild sushi rice taste, they did a good job. Wasabi had somewhat of a kick, but not enough to give you that brain freeze sensation. Sometimes when you get that pain, it's part of the experience, so I kinda missed that. It's not like chili spicy because those things make you sweat and you drink loads of liquid to calm it down slightly. Wasabi spicy is the helpless feeling you get and all you can do is just close your eyes and pray that the sting goes away quickly. Sometimes tears of happiness rolls down your cheeks. Anyways, for under $10 for lunch (including tip and tax), this place will be a place I will be going again, maybe even for dinner. I approve this place for now. I will know for sure once I try their noodles whether I can call this place somewhere I can fulfill my Japanese cravings when I'm too lazy to make it myself, which is all the time. read more

Though I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur of sushi by any means, I have taken several people here on separate occasions who would consider themselves such. It's pretty unanimous - this is the best place in the capital region to get sushi. Everything I've ever gotten there has tasted incredibly fresh, and high quality. They also have the best miso ginger dressing I've ever had, hands down. I'm super excited about the new expansion, and from the crowds I've seen every time I've gone in since the remodel, it looks like others are, too! Heard good things about the place I wanted to order my wife lunch from here. The website says a to go order would take about 15 minutes. I've been sitting in the restaurant for 20 minutes after waiting 15 minutes to come over here and they told him it would be done shortly. I'm so disappointed by the service it doesn't matter how good the food is. Over 30 minutes and the only apology was we're short-staffed it'll be ready soon. This is my second time here, and I really don't understand why people are raving about their sushi. I ordered a salmon lover roll which was pretty gross actually. The salmon inside the roll is really mushy and quite flavorless, and the salmon on the outside of the roll is really thin, and didn't taste that fresh. Usually the raw fish should be a little chilled and has a good texture. But the salmon I got is at room temperature, like the chef had been holding on to it for a long time or something. Plus I cannot stand those crunchy fried stuff, and they put a ton in my roll, and that's pretty much all I could taste; I had to use a lot of wasabi to cover that up. Not to mention the presentation on this plate is quite outdated. I have to say their cooked food is better than their sushi, but aren't they called "Sushi" Tei? If I have to go back there, I will stick with their hot food. I am not impressed at all; I had better sushi in the capital area. read more

I got the bento box. For only $13.99 I got salad which had crusted lobster in it, miso soup, tempura and even got to choose two additional sides. My friend orders a la carte and no complaints there! Out of all the sushi bars I've been to in the area I've never comparable customer service that was completely sincere and authentic. Def will be back and so happy I live only three blocks away.
