Though I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur of sushi by any means, I have taken several people here on separate occasions who would consider themselves such. It's pretty unanimous - this is the best place in the capital region to get sushi. Everything I've ever gotten there has tasted incredibly fresh, and high quality. They also have the best miso ginger dressing I've ever had, hands down. I'm super excited about the new expansion, and from the crowds I've seen every time I've gone in since the remodel, it looks like others are, too! Heard good things about the place I wanted to order my wife lunch from here. The website says a to go order would take about 15 minutes. I've been sitting in the restaurant for 20 minutes after waiting 15 minutes to come over here and they told him it would be done shortly. I'm so disappointed by the service it doesn't matter how good the food is. Over 30 minutes and the only apology was we're short-staffed it'll be ready soon. The food here is so good that one time they accidentally left something out of my pickup order, I got a call on the drive home about it, I went back to get it, they felt soo bad that had happened, apologized profusely, and I looked at the manager and said (with a legit smile) "That's ok. It's worth coming back for." She smiled and said thank you. This is a great sushi restaurant run by great people. My wife and I have been eating their food for years. Just had it last night as a matter of fact. The special sushi rolls do not disappoint. Plus, the staff are always awesome and super friendly. This is my first yelp review and I am a bit conflicted about how to rate this restaurant. The sushi was delicious but the service left a lot to be desired. I had an avocado roll and the avocado was honestly the freshest I've ever experienced with sushi. The rice was a deliciously sticky and satisfying carbohydrate experience. The miso soup and the seaweed salad were wonderful as well. However, what I wanted to order was avocado, cucumber and carrot, all in 1 roll, but when I proposed this idea to a member of the wait staff, I was told that combination was impossible. I could only have avocado and cucumber, or avocado and carrot, or cucumber and carrot. I found this inflexible attitude towards slight menu alterations bizarre and frustrating. The service also had a few other non food-related issues. The restaurant is located adjacent to a chiropractor's office, which is fine, except deciphering which door belongs to which establishment could be a bit of a challenge, if one was not paying close enough attention. Maintenance was also being done on the air conditioner unit while patrons were eating, which seemed a bit unsanitary. And at the risk of sounding too high maintenance, I was not offered the option of a straw with my diet coke, which irked me as well. Overall, I would give the restaurant a 3.5 and while I would not go there again because of the service, I would gladly get take-out in the future. read more

Just had a great dinner here! It was pretty busy but we only had to wait about 15 mins for a table. We ordered a bunch of dishes, and everything was delicious. We started with crab shumai and fried calamari. The calamari tasted great-perfectly fried and it came with a delicious dipping sauce that had toasted sesame seeds in it. We had a few different speciality rolls: the Louisiana roll, the James Bond roll, the angel roll, and a spicy tuna and spicy salmon roll. We also ordered the special roll of the night called the dynasty roll. All the rolls were fantastic but the angel and dynasty were my favorites. They charge you for refills on soft drinks, which is annoying. Six rolls and two apps were more than enough for three people. Definitely my new favorite sushi place in the Capitol region! read more

My sister and I just went here for lunch today, and right off the bat, I wasn't happy with the fact that there were no non-sushi specials (hello bento box??) on Sundays. That's pretty lame. Anyway, my sister and I and a young couple were the only people in the place, but the service was still pretty nonexistent. Our waitress was not very pleasant or attentive (she gave me an odd look when I kept requesting more green tea - how is that weird?). Our food came out at a reasonable time and was pretty good, but our waitress began eating her own lunch in the back while we were eating ours so once we were done, it took a good 15 minutes to see any employees of the place (and it's a small place). I asked for mochi and that took a while to come out as well. It was a 2 hour ordeal when it really should have been 45 considering what he ordered. Me? I had the spicy crab salad (real delicious and a great sized, fresh portion for 5 bucks) and the tempura tofu (the tofu was cut a bit thick but it was still good). My sister had the egg drop beef/rice bowl (can't remember the japanese name for it- sorry!) and absolutely loved it, but the piece that I had of the piece was chewing and sinewy (and I might be the exception here but there is something that ruins a meal to me about tendons or cartilidge in my food). The mochi was great - but it's hard to screw that up since they took it right out of a package (nothing wrong with that - I got 2 green tea mochis for 3 bucks ^_^). I know that my review might be a harsh considering I didn't actually have sushi here, but it was more the service that made me not truly enjoy it. Also, the food was good but not as good as I'm used to at similar small sushi/japanese hot food establishments. A bit overpriced too, but good enough if you're fixing for some good japanese food in the area. read more

This place was really just lukewarm to me. Got a salmon roll and some type of spicy tuna roll with tempura crunchies. It was just okay. Fish didn't have a lot of flavor and the crunchies were almost a sandy consistency. Price was very good, but I'd rather spend more for quality sushi. Maybe I cam on an off day, or lunch isn't as good. But I'm hesitant to go back when Hana is down the street. read more

I'm hesitant to give this a 4, because I've been relegating most "nice" places with 4s and "sub-par" places with 3s. The food here was very yummy, flavored nicely and presently, as is common with Japanese food, beautifully. Here's my problem: I'm a die-hard fan of Mari's in Schenectady. It's family-owned, family-run, and the food is delicious, cheap, and the servers are kick-ass awesome. Sushi Tei had nice food, but it felt a bit like a chain, and it was a bit cold in appearance. I had a nice time, and would probably go back if in the area and jonesin for a sushi fix, but I wouldn't drive the distance for it. Know what I mean? read more

I can't speak highly enough of Sushi Tei in Guilderland. I happen to be an extremely picky eater, especially when it comes to sushi, but this place simply can't be beat. They seem to be an anomaly among sushi joints, or restaurants in general! Not only is it among the freshest and most delicious food I've ever eaten, but it's beyond reasonably priced and the staff is always as welcoming as can be. My friend and I aim to stop in every Sunday and I sometimes even sneak in their lunch roll special during the week. The Shrimp Tempura Roll is phenomenal, and I recommend getting it with a side of the chef's spicy sauce. They have an array of special roll's, and I find the 007 Roll to be the best yet. I have yet to have a bad experience there (or even a less than stellar one). Its quaint little dining room is never as packed as I expect it to be and my take out always takes under 10 minutes. Normally, this is my standard choice for sushi. Intimate setting, decently priced and its a very close drive from my home. Plus it doesn't have that corporate, big box feel that seems to be more and more common in this area (think Hana or Hibachi X). However, my experience there last time made me think twice about dining at Sushi Tei again in the near future. My husband, myself and a long time friend decided to head out for a few rolls and some edamame. It was a Sunday night and we were told our coupon was only valid Monday-Thursday. Ok, fair enough, I didn't see the fine print. They had some sort of deal going on where you could get two or three rolls off of a pre-fix menu for a cheaper price. BEWARE! Anyone who's read Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential should take note and steer clear of "discount" sushi or any fish during an off peak night of the week. I am 8 months pregnant, so I stuck to the cooked rolls on the menu, while my friend who is borderline vegetarian stuck with the veggie rolls. My husband, however, made the grave mistake of ordering a raw salmon roll off of the pre-fix menu. The plot thickens... Our waitress was prompt and courteous with our waters. We immediately had to send them back as they tasted of bleach or some sort of cheap cleaning fluid that hadn't been properly rinsed out in the dishwashing process. Our appetizers were on par (edamame and vegetable gyoza) and our rolls came out rather quickly. That, my friends, is when disaster struck. My husband noticed one of his salmon rolls didn't taste right, since I'm off of raw fish for now I wasn't able to verify. He ate maybe two more and decided he was done. We weren't more than a few feet from the restaurant when he exclaimed, "We have to get home... NOW." I'll spare you fellow yelpers from the nitty gritty details, but this was definitely an experience for the books. Needless to say its been a few days and my hubby's digestive system still isn't "on track." Sushi Tei is a nice place to eat and I had many enjoyable experiences there. However, food poisoning no matter how mild or severe is never acceptable and should never warrant more than one star. The second is a courtesy for good service. If you're going to offer a discounted menu consisting of last week's spoiled fish, at least accept your coupons on a Sunday night. read more

Each time I go to Sushi Tei, I order either the sushi lunch special or go straight for the specialty rolls which are so well executed. Everything is so fresh and authentic. They just recently got their liquor license after their renovations so it's $3 cocktails in March! And they are DELICIOUS. Just got their sushi and sashimi lunch box special based on a local Albany blogger's recommendation and was mildly disappointed. I got it to go and first off, they forgot to put soy sauce into my bag. Luckily I had some at home. The roll that was in there was mediocre as was the appetizer that was placed with it (crunchy gyoza drowning in a soy-like sauce). The salmon sashimi was delicious, but the tuna did not look very healthy. For $15 including tax, I expected better. The best nigiri I've had since coming from Japan to NY. For lunch I ordered a bento box with 3pcs of nigiri, a previously frozen chicken teriyaki (you can skip this, it was "meh" at best), 3pcs of shashimi, 6 pcs of maki, and miso soup for $13.95. The chicken was cold, and tasted like something from a lean cuisine box. That's the only bad thing I have to say about the place. The staff was wonderful, the sushi was GREAT, the accommodations were warm, and the price was decent. For those who have ate sushi in other parts of the world, you'll get a strange look on your face from NYers up here if you're looking for nigiri. Just explain it and they'll get it.
