I went there for lunch. The place was packed when we first got there, and we opted to sit at the sushi bar. It took awhile for the server to take our orders, and we waited for our sushi rolls for a significant amount of time. When the food came out, the server didn't remember it was ours and wandered around the restaurant around before remembering us. Two of the five rolls ordered were not what we ordered, and they remade one of them for us. The sushi in general was pretty good. read more

One of the best sushi place in the Capital region. Sushi Tei nestles at the far end of the Cosimo's Plaza. We'd have missed it if it weren't for someone who suggested this place to us. Their soup are superb. Rolls are very good and we can taste the high quality ingredients in the their food. Salads are to die for. Can't say the same for the Hibachi grill through. Anything we ordered from their "from the Hibachi grill" menu came out too salty. Here's some details on what we found: - Miso soup: very good miso soup. I've never thought about writing a review on miso soup, but it is that good! - Udon soup: yummy! Udon is tender and cooked to perfection and the soup.....ahh... - Pretty girl roll: broiled eel with (loads of) avocado. The best roll we have had in the capital region. Hands down! - Eel and avocado roll: nice (though not as nice as pretty girl) - Shrimp tempura roll: oh, so good. Crunchy tempura...yum! - Salmon skin salad: very tasty salad dressing - Crab salad: very very good. Fresh ingredients with loads of crab meat. Stick to the rolls, udon, soup, and salad, and you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended! P.S. We didn't try any raw stuff cause of personal health reason. But, it does look really good. Best sushi in the area, hands down! The maki rolls are delicious. The sushi is fresh and melts in your mouth. The prices are affordable. UPDATE: I eat here usually once a week. It's always delicious. The service is fantastic. I once brought friends visiting here from out of town and they were various impressed. One friend has lived all over the U.S. and in Korea and said this was the best sushi he's ever had. Sushi Tei has some fantastic deals as well. Ive been here a few times and you cant beat the prices and sizes of the rolls. I like that they have different sushi then most of the other places around. So far my fav is the spicy crab wrapped in cucumber. Delish!!! The dining area is a bit small and it seems like most of their business is from takeout but its a great little place. read more

I actually worked here about a year. Not because I worked, I really can say sushi and other foods here are really good. There will be a reason many Japanese people come and eat in this restaurant. This means, this restaurant has original Japanese food and it also means you can taste real Japan! Also, the price of sushi and rolls are really cheap. This is my favorite place for sushi in the area, and I've been a bunch of times. I like that it is purely Japanese, and not some pan-Asian mishmash. The quality is always excellent. One thing that probably is not very Japanese are these "special" rolls that most American places seem to sell now. They are too big to fit in your mouth whole, and impossible to take a bite of without making a mess. And usually the flavors are muddled with too many ingredients. You don't have to order these of course, but the new menu doesn't even have the traditional a la carte sushi selections shown, so you have to ask the waitress for the paper sheet where you can select them. This is probably one of my favorite sushi places in the Albany area. They have a huge assortment of different sushi rolls, sashimi, and sushi. We ordered the love boat, miso soup, edamame, and some different rolls. There were five of us in total and it was all in all too much sushi (but that's our fault for ordering that much). It was all incredibly delicious and I would definitely recommend the Pink Lady Roll- It was fantastic. The reason I am giving it only four stars and not five because the service was a bit slow but the may have been partly due to our large order. I don't know who the manager was tonight, but they may have just lost a couple of long time customers. We ordered almost $40 worth of food, plus tip which we always do even if it's only a quick pick up order. Getting home we realized there was food missing, and when I called to ask about it I was passed to 3 different people, all who tried to argue with me. 2.5 stars. The atmosphere at Sushi Tei is cozy, due to its small space and to its more traditional Japanese design. Wooden dividers separate wooden tables and chairs. The sushi bar mimics a bamboo constructed area, also likely of wood, but the intended effect of conjuring an authentic experience is appreciated. For appetizers, we started with the tuna tataki, thinly sliced tuna sashimi drizzled with ponzu sauce. The tuna should have been seared, but as far as we could tell, it was not. The sashimi was not as fresh as one could imagine, but it was acceptable, especially in comparison to the offerings in Albany. The portion was sizable, which was appropriate for 3 starving girls. I ordered the ika maruyaki, grilled whole squid that comes with a dipping sauce (a thick soy based one) and a wedge of lemon. My experience with grilled squid has always been that the squid is to be freshly grilled, taking a longer cooking time due to the thickness and density of the protein. I always anticipate the dish to arrive last. Interestingly or actually not so interestingly, the ika arrived right after the tuna tataki (before all sushi and udon orders). The squid was not freshly grilled as one could judge from the temperature of the dish as well as the texture of the protein. The charred areas on the tentacles were not newly acquired, blistering in all its glory, but rather wet and soggy adhesions. I therefore assume that all squids had been pre-grilled, likely to save time from the patron's order to the delivery of the dish. As for how long the squid had been grilled, I will never know. I found this saddening because quality in this case was not valued over convenience. My friend's uni (sea urchin) was slightly off color (a mustard yellow rather than the vibrant orange-yellow it ought to be) and limp. Our other sushi were of similar quality to the tuna that first arrived. Nothing was particularly fresh. The udon made its appearance last. The broth was not thoroughly deep with flavor, but the miso base was prominent. The noodles were perhaps a little on the soggier side that came with slices of carrots and green onion as well as a shrimp tempura. The batter looked dry on the shrimp tempura (again, the tempura was likely not too recently made). I did not sample it for taste. read more

Staff is friendly, food is legit. If it's a hot spot for even Japanese people, you know it's legit, haha. I like the ramen you can get here on Tuesdays. I've been to Japan for study abroad and it's as close as you can try to get without being in Japan. I never had sushi here because I never had a lot of money, but their other dishes are pretty filling and the menu is something you'll see at a casual dining place in Japan. Lots of fried foods, and meats over rice. Yummy comfort food when I miss Japan. I also like their Karaage (fried chicken) and their Donburi selections. read more

I had a very high hope for this place after reading all the great reviews. I know it wouldn't be fair to compare to sushi restaurants in Japan, but it just was not what I would expect from an "authentic sushi restaurant." I know it is difficult get decent quality fish in the US, and I would give "just fine" for their fish. It was very standard frozen stuff you can get in inland sushi restaurants in the US. At least, they they could prepare the shrimp on their own, but it was tough and tasted like prepackaged stuff. But the worst part was the rice. Rice is THE most important part of Japanese cuisine. Every dish (except for noodle dishes) is about how well it would go with rice. If the rice is not good, the dish is not good. At restaurants in Japan, rice is prepared by the most experienced cook in the kitchen. Having that said, the rice at this restaurant was not cooked correctly. It was too dry and was served too cold, and it needed to be served at the room temperature. Rice is very difficult to handle, but it will be easier when it is less moist and colder since it will be less sticky. However, if you do that you sacrifice the taste and the texture, and that's exactly what I had here. On top of that, their rice of the sushi looked like it was formed using a mold. Nigiri means "to hold with hand," and who would have a perfectly flat hand? The bottom of their sushi was completely flat. If you know how to make nigiri with hands, you would know it needs to be more of a boat shape instead of flat bottom. Maybe they do have a flat hand, who knows. But if you are a trained sushi chef, you should know that the shape that they serve is not correct. Moreover, if it was prepared by an experienced sushi chef, it will be somewhat dense outside, but airy and fluffy inside. Have you ever wondered why sushi costs so much for such a small ingredient? In Japan, it is because it take years to master the art of Nigiri, and sushi made by inexperienced sushi chef or machine or inexperienced chef with a mold, can be purchased conveyer belt sushi restaurants at much cheaper price-- 2 pieces for about a dollar. Wasabi was the powdered stuff, which is fine since real wasabi is very expensive. What I had problem was how it was handled and lacked potency. Powdered asabi loses its potency after it was hydrated and as it ages. It should be prepared in small quantity and mixed vigorously to get the potency. Of course if you had any training as a sushi chef, you would know that. These are some of the basics of sushi that does not cost to make it better. All it takes is a proper training and caring about doing the best to bring out the maximum result from the available ingredient. Kaizen is one of the most important concept that is embedded in Japanese culture. I don't think they even know what does that mean. When you pay so much money for sushi, you are paying for the extraordinary skill of the chef, not just for the cost of the ingredient (and other cost of running the restaurant). When I see a "sushi" restaurants that lacks the fundamental but the one of the most important skills of making sushi such as the handling of the rice but charges premium price as a high-end restaurant, I cannot help myself but to think that I just wasted my money. read more

Was looking for a good sushi restaurant to take my son for his birthday. He's a suny albany student and we live in bergen county NJ, so I relied on Yelp reviews. It was a good choice! We had both sushi and hot food and neither dissapointed! The sushi was fresh and tasty and prepared exactly as ordered (some changes to rolls). The hot food was equally good. The dinner box was served with plenty of food and a nice presentation of a little fruit for dessert. The service was very good, and the restaurant was full. Very poor service. Came in at 5 pm on a Saturday night with my girlfriend. Ordered a salad, an appetizer, and a couple rolls. An hour went by and we still didn't get any of our food despite reminding the waiters. People who came after us were served and even paid their bills.
