This is my favorite sushi place in the Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Newport area. Don't be frightened off by it's out-of-the-way location. It's definitely worth a trip! The food is always tasty, but more importantly, the staff really seems to care about taking care of you while you are there. They are friendly and they have a good eye for keeping drinks filled and extra napkins on the table. If there is ever an issue with anything, they go above and beyond to fix it. They once forgot to bring us one of the rolls we ordered, to make up for it, they brought us that roll and an extra one just because. This isn't a large restaurant but it's perfect for a small group of friends, we love it! read more

This is a great spot! Super friendly to locals and non locals. The food is as delicious as the service! Ask for Billy. He will absolutely make your experience there. We called about 10 minutes in advance to let them know we had a party of 10, (this is a fairly small restaurant) and they handled our large party size wonderfully! The food is amazing! The best price+quality combo you will find within 30 miles of this area. Try their salmon sushi with white onion and ponzu sauce. Their portions and fish cuts are very generous! This is definitely my favorite local sushi spot around Costa Mesa/Newport. Make sure to always ask the chef what the fish of the day is as they get shipments daily from around the world. I personally like the Red Eye roll and the Pink Cadillac Roll which both have no rice and pretty much all protein. Their hand rolls are always filled with plenty of fish. Friendly staff and prices are in the medium range, but definitely worth it for some quality sushi. read more

I ordered to go. Three simple orders: sashimi salad, volcano roll, and crunch roll. The waitress said it'll be a thirty minute wait, which I consented to. It was surprisingly a busy Monday night so I understood. When the order came out, however, I got 2/3 of my orders and a half order of some avocado roll.. Wtf? I looked at the receipt and saw she charged for an avocado roll instead of a volcano roll... I did not wait half an hour for 4 tiny pieces of an avocado roll. Seriously ?! On top of that, the roll sizes are tiny!! Never coming back. Ugh read more

This is some of the best sushi I ever had! I've been here twice, both with my girlfriend and we both agree that this is one of the better sushi places. The food is fantastic. The fish tastes really fresh and theres always plenty of it. This is the only place where I can order a spicy tuna roll and I know I'll be getting more tuna then rice. And it actually has some kick to it! If you want to try a bit of several fish, then go with the rainbow roll. Its a standard at sushi places and I usually like to judge by this roll. Again, each fish on each part of the roll is fantastic and has this taste of freshness. Service can be a bit slow, and if you ever sit at the sushi bar (which considering it makes the majority of the restaurant) the chefs will show you how backed up they are. But time can fly between rolls if you just chat up with them. It is small so on some nights you might have to wait out in the cold a bit longer, but I really think its worth the wait. read more

This place used to be our favorite place, not sure what happened with the quality and quality of service but it just went down hill like a rock falling from a cliff!! We went there on Saturday night at 10:15PM, we order the Hawaiian Roll but got something called Dangerous, well it looked Dangerous, aso order a Poki Bowl, but it had a funny smell and it didnt look right so we just placed it on the side....LOOK I get you are closing at 10:30 but if you cant take an order right, then dont take it at all!!!! We went back the next Morning to get our money back for the bad food and incorrect order, but the manager in charge wanted the food back!!......WHAT! the FOOD BACK? what purpose does that serve!! at this point no apology, no nothing but they want their food back! I told him no problem, we will bring his Stinky food right back, mind you at this point the food was setting outside in the TRASH BINS in the alley all night and their plastic bag was touching other trash so we went back to get his FOOD from the Trash container, brought it back to him (keep in mind at this time the food had an awful stench) so we brought it back to his restaurant and what does he do.......HE places the BAG IN THE COUNTER WHERE THEY CUT THE FISH!!!! not very SANITARY!!!! but he wanted to SEE IT so we let him have it!! Then they tell us we will get a call back from the manager to confirm our REFUND, no Apologies, no nothing!!! they called us on Monday Morning, I went to pick up our money and will never ever ever eat at this place again!!! TIP: If you dont mind take out from a sushi spot I highly recomend you do because this place can get packed during peak hours (dinner/weekends) and the wait/service may lag. I love their sashimi salad to go. It has a good amount of sashimi and the salad is filling. I came here for dinner this past friday around 8 with my girlfriend and it was PACKED. It has no waiting areas so those waiting were just standing around. i didnt mind because the NCAA tournament was playing and they allowed me to order a beer. +1 We sat at the bar and it was a good experience from there. We ordered beer and hot sake and got things going. We shared a shot with the sushi chef as the earthquake happened. He put the shot down in suprise saying, "What was in that shot?!" We ordered the Large Sashimi plate. It was really good. Pricey but really good. You get a variety of fish which are cut thick. HIGHLY recomend for anyone on the paleo diet. I loved Sushi Town! I went around 8:00 on a Saturday night with my husband and it was full! We had to wait ~10 minutes for a seat at the bar. To start, we shared a half order of the Spicy Tuna Salad, which was delicious but had a strong kick to it. If you like spicy food, you'll definitely enjoy it. I loovveeee Sushi Town! I would make a song about it if I was good at that kind of thing. Alas, I am not. Sushi Town isn't quite the quality of Shunka down the street but it's the next best thing your gonna get. It's also much more affordable and they have some great lunch and dinner deals. I usually sit at the sushi bar. Service has always been prompt and perfectly friendly. The sushi chefs seem really nice and are very attentive. I've only had to wait once and it was on like a Friday at 7 or some other peak hour. That was a bit of a wait though so if you're planning a weekend dinner I might come early or make reservations if you can. So the sushi. Really good. I'd even say really really good. I always judge the quality of a sushi place by its rice, and theirs is always fresh and not too dry. I usually get one of the roll combos for lunch and dinner, I think you get like a tuna/california roll and a california roll with baked scallops on top for ten bucks or something ridiculously cheap. It's always delicious and fresh. They also have other combinations that are like half sushi half roll. Decent selection of Japanese beer too. Parking has never been a problem except for that one Friday at 7. No big you just park down the street. read more

I called in an order to-go for a Rainbow Roll and Baby Lobster roll. Rainbow roll: the sushi was very slimy and fishy tasting. Would NOT order again. As for the Baby Lobster roll, I don't know what they taste like because they gave me some other roll that was tempura-like with a tempura lobster tail in the box that didn't even contain any lobster in it. I challenge anyone to beat the quality of the sushi here for the price they charge. This place is very non-assuming. It is located in a tiny strip mall along the 55 fwy and the staff if super friendly. Whether you enjoy rolls or traditional sashimi and nigiri, you will definitely enjoy the great flavors and huge portions at this place. The best seat in the house is at the bar. If you choose to sit at a table, it could be a while before you see your food. Jin is the sushi chef that my wife and I always choose to sit with. He is really funny and cranks out sushi as if it was going out of style. If you like rolls, I recommend the "Cheater Roll" (seasonal). If you like nigiri, I recommend the Ono and fatty Yellow Tail. If I ordered the same amount of sushi and sashimi in any other restaurant it would definitely cost over 2x as much. Sushi Town is a great spot, it has something for everyone. I am not a huge fan of most rolls, as I don't like imitation crab, eel sauce, or things deep fried with cream cheese, but they have a great selection of that kind of roll for people who are just getting familiar with the sushi concept. They also have plenty of spicy tuna and other fresh fish based rolls. If rolls aren't your thing, they have several grill items as well as great sushi and sashimi, chirashi, broth based dishes, salads, etc. Their sushi is a huge portion of fish with just the right amount of rice underneath, and their rice is always perfectly seasoned and warm. My favorites: -tuna, salmon, albacore, seared tuna, and yellow tail sushi -Hawaiian roll (spicy tuna with pickled Japanese veg inside, albacore and garlic ponzu outside) -Whatever Jins current specials are I tend to stick to the same basic concept each time I go, and can get 5 orders of sushi and 2 rolls for just under $40. You can't beat the prices, the quality of the fish rivals much more expensive restaurants in the area. The wait can be a little bit long (20 or so minutes) on busy nights, but they do a good job of accommodating the crowd. read more

Master Jin takes second seat only to the sushi. The chefs know what's good and are willing to explore some culinary realms if you have some time. My favorite is the "Three Tenors" - lobster, spicy tuna, crab+ on a soy hand roll. *yum* This is followed closely by the "Red Eye Roll" - sweet, tasty, and usually the first thing ordered each time I'm in. I agree - the bar IS the place to sit, but there's no quality degradation if you're at the tables - it's the same chefs! Hands down, my favorite sushi spot in Orange County! Prices are excellent for the grade and cuts of fish they give you! Every time I come back to Orange County I'm definitely coming here and NO ONE is going to get in my way(probably because they'll be joining with me)! I'm not going to give away my favorite roll as it's custom thanks to my good friend Paloma who introduced me to this place, but let's just say it's very similar to the spicy baby lobster roll, with a few adjustments :] Minus one star though because if you get here after 7pm during the weekend, it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get quick service, let alone a table. The times I've been, there wasn't any wait for a table. The fish is so good. Fresh. Hahah and trust I know fish taste (No pun intented). As far as taste goes, it is definitely the one of the best I've had. Very comfortable setting. I mean it fits the bill. Literally, wasn't expensive at all. If you like green tea, get a cup to go with your rolls. It's both brewed but they don't add too much matcha like other places (You don't a powder drink fix). I only got into sushi in the last 10 years or so and I am not a hardcore sushi nut that doesn't dip it in soy sauce or eats sashimi only. I love myself a good nigri and enjoy the taste of fresh fish, but sometimes I love sushi rolls that are a little americanized. If that sounds like you, this is the place to go. They have some of the best rolls and definitely generous with their fish. Decor - 3/5: clean, but nothing fancy. I was at least expecting some dark wood or bamboo but it is just a simple restaurant with a big sushi bar and maybe 4-7 small tables. It felt like a sushi take out place or like the chain sansei. I would take friends, but not a date...unless it's the third or fourth one. Food - 5/5: Americanized rolls with plenty of fish. I had the Hawaiian which had delicious fresh albacore, the monkey roll which tasted like fried stuff mushrooms and some other spicy tuna roll. We didn't get a chance to try any sashimi. Service - 5/5: honest and friendly. There was a group of 4 of us and we initially ordered 7 rolls but the server said "wwooaahhh" and said it might be much. We cut it to 5 and it was just right. Came in on a Sunday night around 730PM and had about a 10 minute wait with 2 parties of 2 ahead of us. Not bad at all! It was really difficult deciding what to get cause everything kind of looks similar with the same ingredients, but that's not to say they weren't freaking delicious. With the help of Yelp reviews and pictures, we decided on the Monster Roll and Maru Special roll. We also ordered baked mussels and garlic edamame. Ehhh, we should have skipped the last 2 orders. The baked mussels were barely hot when they came out and were kind of just sitting in this runny spicy mayo liquid. I didn't like it, usually I see that it's broiled or something that gives the top layer a nice toasted/almost burnt (but not) flavor and texture to it. Pass on this. And that garlic edamame that everyone talks about? It kind of tasted like the black bean paste in Chinese food, not too impressed either. Good overall, but even though the menu for sushi rolls is quite extensive, all the rolls tasted kind of similar in the end, and too much sauce on everything. I'd like to see some more unique rolls on the menu! And they also fall apart really easily :\ but I'd still come back when I find myself craving sushi rolls! read more

This is the first time Yelp reviews have misled me - this place was such a disappointment. Service was B-A-D. The hostess gave us a very flip greeting - her apathy definitely set the tone for our meal. She gave two of us one menu and sat us at the sushi bar (the few tables were already taken). I couldn't find any non-specialty, a la carte sushi on the menu, so I asked the sushi chef if they had a "regular" sushi menu. He said yes but made no effort to give me one or have a server bring one after neglecting to give us one in the first place. I had to get up and ask for one from the hostess with the bad attitude. Then I had to go over again and ask for a pencil. Sigh. I don't think it's reasonable for staff to make patrons feel like they're asking for too much when they're just trying to obtain full menus for two people. From that point on, servers were nowhere to be found. Prices were very modest, given this is a sushi restaurant in SoCal. I would have ordered a drink if anyone came to take our order (spoiler: no one came over). We asked the sushi chef for a couple rolls. They were served one at a time. Given the low prices, I was surprised to see a huge pile of fish in each roll! Usually I'd be thrilled, but the ungodly large portions actually detracted from the sushi. The fish wasn't the highest quality by a long shot (mealy, no fresh flavor), and the rolls were so big and poorly portioned they were hard to eat. But to wait a whole hour for a to go order is a bit too much! An hour??? If you are seated at a table the sushi is mediocre. At the bar, it's almost always excellent. I've come here for the past 10 years and Jin, the head chef, knows us well. If I go now, it's because of him. I'll tolerate the terrible service. Or we try to go midday so as to avoid the crowd. Daddy daughter date night! Every Wednesday for the last year and a half my dad and I have come here. You know when you go to a restaurant for the first time and you get a dish that's AMAZING so you go back and it's good, but it's never as good as the first time? Not here! We ordered: Rainbow Roll: Pretty standard, California rolls with mixed sashimi and avocado on top. There were 6 rolls. And each roll was pretty big. It was good, but not phenomenal. The rolls were kind of too big to fit in our mouths so we had to bite it, but then it'd just fall apart. It was still good though. 3.5/5 Maru Special Roll: This was great! I really liked it because of all the toppings on the roll (scallops and spicy tuna). 4/5 Love Roll: It was good, but I wouldn't order this again. It's just a California roll wrapped in baked Salmon, there are other things to try. 3/5 The only problem was that the service was horrible. The girl who was our server immediately left our table as soon as she put down our food and my friend had to flag her down all the way across the room after she ran away from us, basically. Also the busboys kept going over to our table and looking at it to see if there was anything to clean so they could leave quickly at the closing time. We came a little late (1 hour before closing), but you should never kick out your customers, regardless. Service was a 2/5.
