I think we've finally found our GO-TO sushi spot in the KC area and we are SOO excited. This place is popping with customers - both takeout and dine-in. I'd recommend you come early to beat the lunch/dinner rush hours. We came at 11:45am and still had to wait a good 20-30min just to be seated. All that to say, this place is well worth the wait, ESPECIALLY during lunch time. Their lunch specials are off the charts when it comes to getting the most bang for your buck. Think quality food with good portions for a reasonable price that won't break the bank. Their sashimi/sushi specials are well worth the money, especially if you're coming in for a special occasion (e.g. anniversary, birthdays, valentines days, etc.). Would 100% recommend. read more

This place hosts the ultimate sushi specials for lunch. Unlikely your basic lunch offerings, they have different soup, rolls and crab rangoon coming with your a order. The sushi was fresh and I can't wait to try some rolls off the regular menu. Tip: lunch is packed so get there before the 11:45 rush. read more

Food: the foods were delicious! Big fat thick of sashimi. I loved the salmon here it was so fresh and delicious. I loved the miso soup and the agedashi tofu as well. The uni (sea urchin) however was a big flop. It didn't taste fresh and had a bitter after taste. I would say so far I love the salmon sashimi from this place the most. Also decoration here is on point!!! Service: we came on July 3rd so it was quite packed. The wait time was about 45 minutes. The service here is okay, not too bad but not great either. But I think because it was super busy that they didn't service us well. We did wait quite awhile from our appetizers to our main dishes though. Ambiance: the place is kinda small so it was kinda annoying to be sit so close to people! This is the only thing I dislike very much about this place. My wife and I came here last night at about 8 PM, which was a Wednesday. As soon as we got there, we realized we had run into something special. There was a wait, which we did not expect on such an off day. As soon as we sat down, we understood why. From the moment we were seated, we were immediately addressed by the server and had our drink orders taken. Even though the entire place was filled, they were attentive and quick. We ordered three rolls and two orders of sashimi between the two of us. Every single bite was amazing. There wasn't one thing that wasn't fresh, beautiful, plentiful, and delicious. This is definitely some of the best sushi I've ever had. I have marked this as my favorite sushi spot in Kansas City until someone proves me otherwise! We will definitely be back. read more

YUM! This place was surprisingly very delicious and a go to spot for sushi in Kansas City! We had a party of 5 on a Thursday night, and the wait was about 30-45 min. Once we were seated, the service was quick and pretty good. The menu is a bit overwhelming with so many sushi options. - UNI roll (4.5/5): SO YUMMY! I loved this roll, and it had the perfect amount of sauce to fish to rice. I love salmon and this roll had a variety of different fishes. Would definitely recommend! - Spicy crab salad (3.5/5): they gave this to our table for free! It was a nice surprise, and it was a refreshing seafood salad! This is one of my go to Sushi spots around KC. Their miso soup is my favorite in the area and they have a giant selection of rolls! (The KC chief roll is my favorite) Service is always attentive and nice! The building is kinda small and they are pretty popular so you might have to wait for a table, but definitely worth it! read more

I've been here two times now, and each time has been amazing. The staff are all attentive, kind, and polite! The food is amazing, and I really recommend the Unagi Maki. It has a wonderful, melt-in-your-mouth texture with a savoury eel sauce on top. The store was very quiet and intimate, especially if you sit at the sushi bar. Highly recommend if you're in the area. I've been coming here for years, and the quality has never dipped. It's easily the best sushi place in the Kansas City metro, in my opinion. There are many other more hyped, upscale or fancy sushi restaurants...but this place is significantly better than all the others. No gimmicks, no frills - just really good food with good service. If you are visiting KC on limited time, come here for sushi and don't second-guess it. Trust me on this one It's almost always slammed, so I would recommend targeting non-prime hours unless you want to wait in line for a table. Parking can be a challenge but isn't terrible. The space itself isn't picturesque but its charm lies in the hustle and bustle of the staff, the gentle buzz of patrons who appreciate good sushi, and cleanliness. Top 3 spots to get Sushi in Kansas City. I've been here a couple of times, and I would say food has been pretty good each time. Spicy Crab Salad is a nice portion size. I've only had one instant where the Spicy Crab Salad was really dry, but they fixed it once I told the server about the Spicy Crab Salad. Octopus Salad is 10/10 eating the octopus with a slice of lemon, and the pickled cucumbers is just the best ever, and not every place does octopus salads. Baked Mussels I would give a 8/10. I've had better I think this place just lacks adding condiments on top constantly. Rolls are very good. Very typical rolls Sashimi and Nigiris are really good & fresh for midwest Sushi. Hands down favorite spot in town. Always on point. Love sitting at the sushi bar - plenty of room and the chefs are always so friendly, fun and skilled. Superb sushi is what you can always expect at Sushi UNI. This is the only place I will pay for sushi in KC and beats out many of the sushi spots back in my hometown on the east coast. The entire menu is reasonably priced (no $8 california rolls here) and the special rolls are STUFFED to the brim with fresh fish. My favorite way to eat at Sushi UNI is to share an appetizer of the seaweed salad (absolutely incredible) and then get 1 special roll. It is the ideal amount of food to keep you satisfied until the next craving you get for some raw fish. read more

Being in a landlocked state, you are quite worried about the sushi quality. Not going to lie, I've stepped in some bombs that were truly inedible before reaching this gem. Fish quality is really nice, you can tell the coloring is slightly off but the fresh taste is still there. We had conch Escobar Toro tuna scallops salmon yellowtail. They were all great. The specialty rolls were not that amazing tbh but I was OK with that since everything else was very nice. I would certainly come back and bring others back. read more

Quick sit down sushi. I tried this for lunch because of their lunch sushi special. The special I chose came with two rolls, 2 crab Rangoon and egg drop soup. It was a little pricy for lunch but it was a ton of food. I appreciated that the lunch menu contained their house recipes as well as basic sushi rolls, however, the menu was difficult to navigate. The lunch special rolls are listed all together on the back but there are no descriptions for the rolls on the page. I had to flip through the whole menu to see what each roll was. This would have been fine if only basic rolls were listed but I had no clue what a dinosaur roll could possibly entail. After trying to comprehend and remember what rolls I wanted to pick I ended up quickly just compromising when the waiter came around several times within about five minutes pushing us to order. I was appreciative that the staff was attentive and everyone was friendly but they were also very pushy. I ended up with the dino roll and the honey wasabi roll. After ordering, our crab Rangoon and soup was out in about three minutes. The soup was piping hot but the crab Rangoon was not. It made me think they were not at all fresh. The taste was good though. Would have been better if they were still warm. The sushi was out before I was able to finish my soup which was fine except there was no where on the table to put the plate. My sushi rolls were both very good. The honey wasabi was my favorite and not too spicy. The Dino roll was good but the fried outside was a little thick for my liking. The sauce on top mixed well with the roll and had a good full pallet of flavor. They brought us our boxes and check as soon as we were done and gently pushed us out. My only real complaint with my meal is that it was rushed. On one hand it was nice to get in and out because you can easily have a nice sit down meal in a 30 minute lunch break period but if it had been dinner I would have been a little frustrated. read more

Five stars for food and service. It was my first time going and I was excited because I've only heard good things. The rolls were substantial and everything I tasted was a really solid combination of flavors. I can't remember what all I ordered because I came in starving and ordered six rolls (for two people haha). I just remembered that there wasn't one single roll I tried that I didn't like. That's a pretty big deal. Service was great for how busy it was on a Friday night. Going to the bathroom is a little like tetris, knowing how and when to dodge tables and servers. But you know, I don't really care about that because the food was good. If you're going for a moody, romantic ambience... this is not that. You're kind of close to everyone and the space is small. But if you're looking for a solid sushi joint, come. I'll be back for sure. read more

An order of General Tso's chicken with a side of rice runs me $14+ and I'm not kidding when I say that is easily two meals for me and usually three. Many of the dinner specials come with a side, and the egg rolls and spring rolls are excellent. My wife is a big fan of their wonton soup, a hot, nourishing homemade broth that cures what ails ya. I have been here more times than I can count on both of my hands because I work nearby. Honestly, Sushi UNI has never let me down. But this is not the reason for my review today. Yes, you do need to know that the food is worth it, but what I want to share is a drama show. Somewhere you're gonna find a 1-star review from a Brian D. posted on 01/31/2020, just a couple hours before my review. Well, I was there for it and saw the whole story. He came in ~6:58, harassed (yes, full-on, condescending harass) the employees about his food which was supposed to get done at 7:00, and the food did come out to his hand ~7:03, so not even 10 minutes from when he arrived. Definitely did not "wait an hour" like he claimed. He then proceeded to tell the employee, who was carrying his food with both hands (two full bags), that he needed to wait for him to finish typing his fabricated Yelp review, because "you made me wait so now you're gonna wait for me" (word for word quote). Honestly, if I was the employee, I would have just thrown his food to his face. Yet the guy was calm enough to wait, hand him the food, and ask him to not come back again. Of course this entitled Brian could not take such horrible attitude, and wanted to start another show, but he quickly backed off when he realized all other customers who were waiting there were on the employee's side and calling him out. Woops, can't bully that many people at once. Anyway, please find attached some photo of said incident so you know who to avoid next time at all cost. read more

After dozens of orders, Sushi Uni has firmly established itself as our go-to sushi spot in Lenexa. Our usual picks include the Ahi Tuna Roll, Snow White Roll, KC Chiefs Roll, Tiger Roll, Heat Wave Roll, and occasionally the Hulk Roll, with the Tiger Roll standing out as our absolute favorite. The sushi rolls are consistently delicious and are the main reason we keep coming back. However, there's one aspect that prevents us from giving Sushi Uni a perfect score: the side dishes (I give the sides a single star, and I was honestly thinking of giving the resteraunt as a whole 3 starts instead of 4 because of the sides). Initially, on our first ten times ordering from sushi uni, we would add Edamame, Gyoza, or egg/spring rolls to complement our sushi, but we've been consistently disappointed by all of these sides. As a result, we've stopped ordering them altogether, it's a waste of money. It will take them overhauling how they prepare all of the side dishes before we consider ever ordering them again. Despite this, I highly recommend Sushi Uni for their exquisite sushi rolls. They're definitely worth a visit on their own. Just skip the sides to ensure your not leaving disappointed. read more

I stopped by and ate lunch here for the first time on 5/26 since I found out it was right around the corner from work, and had so many great reviews on Yelp. Let me tell you, they are well deserved reviews! I felt like adding my praise to the list as well. I had the 3 sushi roll lunch special. I definitely think next time I'll only need the one or two sushi rolls, because this ended up being so much food! I got a free sample of the spicy crab/shrimp salad which was delicious! The lunch special came with the 2 crab rangoon (some of the best I've ever had) and a salad/soup (whichever you choose). The sushi rolls I had were: Mix Vegetable Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll, and California Roll. I posted a picture on Facebook of the sushi and lots of people inquired where it was/what the sushi was because it looked so darn yummy. This is a really cool little sushi joint that has so much character and charm. I fell in love as soon as I walked through the door. The waiters were so nice and attentive, I honestly felt a bit spoiled. I asked how late they were open and about Sake Bombs and made a mental note to bring my boyfriend back for a date night. I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sushi Uni, and I have to say, it is easily one of my favorite sushi places in town. While the restaurant can get pretty busy, the wait time is never too long, even during lunch. And trust me, the wait is definitely worth it for the phenomenal food. One of the things that sets Sushi Uni apart from other sushi places is their wide variety of dishes outside of sushi. From Teriyaki-style dishes to Americanized Chinese food dishes, there's something for everyone on the menu. But the best deal by far is the lunch special, where you can get 2 or 3 sushi rolls, a soup or salad, and crab rangoon for an incredibly low price. During my last visit, my dining partner and I sat right where they prepare the sushi, which made for a more fun and engaging experience. It was amazing to watch the sushi chefs work their magic, creating the most beautiful and delicious sushi rolls I've ever seen. Not a fancy place but food quality is great. The quality is outstanding, the people are wonderful, the portions are nicely-sized and occasionally generous. The prices are perfect - not so high that you feel ripped off but not so cheap that you worry about quality. The problem is that waiting 10 minutes in the lobby just to be told it will be 25 minutes to be seated isn't great. read more

It's 90 degrees something out & I had to try their pho. It was GOOD, to my surprise! And I say that, cause I haven't found good pho since I've been in MO. Most pho places in MO, I've noticed - their phos are salty. But here, flavor is spot on! My sister had sushi & their shrimp special. We shared the hamachi yellowtail. A bit different from what we're use too at other sushi places. The yellowtail was thick - we had to send it back for some thinner slices. Still came back this, but we manage. Typically the hamachi would be in a sauce but it wasn't. So we opted for ponzu on the side. The servers were great - answered all the Qs my sister had. Checked on us constantly. Def considering this place a hole in the wall. From the outside, I wouldn't visit but once you do decide, the food/variety & costs are well worth it. Costs are better than other places. I opted for 4 stars - for location. If I lived closer, def would be a place to probably be a regular at.
