I walked in and did not know what to order so the cashier gave me a menu and told me that I could have a seat. After looking at the variety they had, I decided to go with their #6 which included teriyaki salmon (i asked for the teriyaki sauce on the side), a salad, miso soup, a serving of rice, a spicy tuna roll and fried shrimp/veggie tempura... ALL FOR $11.47! The quality of the food, quantity they give, and how they provided my food in a timely manner is the reason why I am giving this place 5 stars. Also, very clean bathroom! In terms of parking, Sushi West is located in the same plaza where Coffee Bean is. Trader Joes used to be located in this plaza and is no longer located there. So the prices for the combos have gone up since the last time I've been here. I don't have a problem with that since that's just what's happening everywhere. My problem is why are the portions going down? If prices go up since ingredients are costing more, why aren't you putting out the same amount of food? That seems like you're double dealing when you charge more but give less. The food was not as flavorful as I remembered and it didn't leave me with the feeling that I want to go back for more. I finally made it to sushi west. The restaurant is clean and pretty small. I ordered #2 sesame chicken with brown rice (.50 extra) tempura shrimp a California roll including tempura-sweet potato, zucchini and a green bean. My order also came with miso soup. The sesame chicken was deep fried and crispy but a little dry if it had a sauce it would have been a lot better. I sprinkled on Japanese red pepper and ate it with the brown rice the flavor was delicious and the sesame flavor made it rock. I forgot my lucky chop sticks and had to eat my food with a fork. You do not eat Japanese food with a fork. Lol. The California roll was made with imitation crab avocado and cucumber I mixed a soy-wasabi sauce dip that made it taste spicy and flavorful. My only problem I didn't care for the creaminess of whatever they mixed with the imitation crab. The tempura shrimp and tempura vegetables were fantastic the batter was very light everything is extra crispy and held up perfectly when dipped in the wasabi and soy sauce. I enjoyed this so much I'm going back on Friday and order a complete tempura meal. It was that good. Included with the meal a small salad sliced tomatoes and miso soup that had small pieces of tofu and sea weed. When I picked up my order I was impressed it looked great and smelled fantastic. They give you so much food for a small price one order can feed two people. For starters, as soon as I walked in, I felt like the place had a dingy feel to it. It really didn't help that the floors and a few of the tables weren't clean. In fact, the table that a few of my coworkers were waiting for me at, wasn't wiped down. We ended up wiping it down ourselves. The problem is that I would have rather paid more for less, that tasted better. Something's UPPPP!! I've gone to Sushi West for years- literally since 2007; it's 2023 and we are literally in a long term relationship so I like I KNOW HER, KNOW HER...anyways recently within the last year the service has shifted. The food is still good, but they don't take my order over the phone. I've waited for more than 10 minutes on several occasions and they don't eventually answer. I have to go in and place an order. I haven't done door dash or anything else, but at least give me a reason you don't take phone orders. And last time, I did tell them that no one even answered and they say that their phone is having issues. Last week when I went in, I was very bothered by the experience and was going to talk to the people at the front that answer the phones- but I calmed down and contained myself because clearly- NO ONE- literally NO ONE that works there was smiling. Not when I arrived, not when I left, not as I watched them from afar greeting other guests, so clearly it wasn't me- something tells me that they're being overworked or someone is on them pretty hard. This is where I told myself "Something is UPP!!".. with shifty eyes.. I don't go to places where anyone isn't happy being there for any reason, it compromises quality and the overall general experience. The spicy tuna roll was a little off, and I couldn't quite figure out why. The sushi rice wasn't the best quality; I wonder if it was fresh. The rice is a critical component, and the spicy tuna was pretty average. Hey I realize it was sushi to-go; I was trying to satisfy a craving because I couldn't venture out to a higher end establishment. The salmon was okay but didn't display that melty fattiness that I love about salmon. The yellowtail and tuna were pretty standard. Dining here in person may make a difference, or it might not. I had the pork cutlet curry dish which was pretty good compared with the Little Tokyo Curry Houses. The pork cutlet was over the steamed rice, with the Japanese curry with BEEF and Potatoes to the side. Also included was a side salad. Ahhhhhh....Sushi West! First and foremost, remember, it's cash only. This is a local favorite, and though I don't visit all that often (usually don't carry cash) every trip has been good. Their slection is varied, with menus posted outside and on the mylars above the register. Parking is shared with what i believe is an AT&T store and Trader Joe's and a Coffee Bean, so you might have a little bit of trouble finding parking. The cashier is very friendly and the place is very clean. The condiments and additional utensils are laid out next to the pickup area so you can grab more as you see fit. If you do not order a soda or specialty drink they do have a water dispenser for when you get thirsty. The menu has many combinations to suit your stomach's taste buds and the food is prepared very quickly and freshly. Every combination plate comes with a soup and a salad. Oddly enough i think the salad dressing works very well as a dipping sauce for the tempura, pork, and chicken that is available. The plates are huge, so you definitely get your money's worth. This is one of the best values for the quality of the sushi in Long Beach. The prices for their combo plates or sushi range from 5.99 to about 10 dollars, and this place is packed most of the time. I visited Sushi West for the 2nd time as a re-visit and I've confirmed I really like this place. :) My only comment for improvement is that they take the combo plates with the salads served in them, and put the salad separate since it's cold (and near warm food either gets the hot food cooler or as a salad goes from cold to warm) as well as all of the sauces and juices from the main courses gets into the salad, so it's not quite as refreshing as it could be if served separately in another plate. Other than that one pet peeve of mine, and maybe I can ask for that upon request when I order next time, it's a really awesome place to eat at. I love the diversity of the menu, which at times makes it harder to make a decision with so many delicious options, complicated by having 1, 2 or 3 item combos you can build yourself too. My nitpick is when I went to fill up my cup with lemonade I got water instead, but main point here being the food is GOOD and the amount you get for the price is GREAT. My little bonus is getting a seat closer to the back and overbearing whatever the Mexican cooks are chismiando about. It's a good little spot that never did any harm and minds it's own business and I love it. My brother and I don't go as often as we used to but when we do we always remember why it sticks with you.
