The food is too good here. It is so good that I will still give them five stars for being cash only (unless that has changed recently). I usually get the beef sukiyaki, shrimp tempura plus veggie tempura, and some other sides that I am forgetting for now. I really recommend the beef sukiyaki because they mix in enough onion and noodle (I believe it is), that uniformly creates some real good sukiyaki, trust me. After church on sunday I pass by sushi west and almost always order something. Me and my family love this place, it's just a great little sushi spot! I always order the combo plate with sesame chicken, shrimp tempura, house salad w/ miso sauce, and cali roll. And then I try to order a different roll, they have a lot to choose from! I am never disappointed. When I'm in a rush I call-in my order and pick it up in 15-10 minutes. The staff is always nice, polite, and cheerful. So long story short, if you are ever in this part of the LBC, stop by and treat yourself to some good sushi! read more

When I think of 'sushi fast-food', Sushi West is what comes to mind. Menu items above the counter? Check. Ordering from a cashier that on occasion has a thick accent? Check. Waiting 3 minutes while your food is made? Check. Sushi West just screams Haole at me, fairly or not. The taste is good, the ingredients are quality, and the price is inexpensive, so I don't complain too much. The only problem that I have with Sushi West is that they do not take credit cards, and on more than one occasion have had to go elsewhere for lunch because I had no cash. I have not noticed a decline in how busy the place is at lunchtime with Sushi Boy opening across the street. Lunch is almost always a full house and there is little organization for to go orders. I've loved Sushi West since it first opened, not for authenticity but definitely for prices. Their best deals are the 2 and 3-item combos that come with miso soup, miso salad, and rice ($7.50 and $8.50). My usual is the 2-item with C-7 and C-19! (mixed tempura and sushi). I also recommend the sesame chicken (which they claim as the best seller), fried scallops, salmon shioyaki, and potato croquette. The udon is pretty decent. They also have delicious iced teas for $1.50 +free refills! My only drawback is that the last time I was here, I saw the chef plating tempura bare-handed and didn't quite know how to feel about it... The only "eh" about this place is the tight parking but who cares~ park on the street then! I like the fact that when you walk in, you see the open kitchen full of either sushi makers next to the bar side to the serving staff taking orders and arranging plates of rice, salad, and miso soup to order. They take the time to make their plates pretty too. Now to the food... Their menu consists from sushi to rolls to plates. My fave is their combinations which I usually choose the sesame chicken (pieces of deliciously fried chicken, seasoned perfectly), the tempura shrimp (not the doughy tempura, but the panko crispy style), and the california rolls (not too ricey, and perfect portions). The plate even has a fresh salad with an asian style dressing they need to bottle up to sell! I like to use the chili spice they offer at the pick up counter and sprinkle that sesame chicken to death. I tried their pork katsu curry plate and I damn neared passed out from flavor overdose. The pork katsu was fried perfectly with the right spices and crunch and it was smothered with a thick, creamy curry sauce that had chunks of tender beef cubes and potatoes. I actually appreciate what Sushi West is trying to do -- contrary to Liz M's, observation, in Japan sushi *is* considered to be fast food. Sushi West is obviously an attempt to re-claim sushi away from the "I'm cool because I eat this", Gucci-wearing foodie snobbery that accompanied its arrival stateside. It's the right thing to do. Unfortunately, it is high-quality raw fish we're talking about, and so naturally lunch here is going to be more expensive than your average trip to Chipotle. Due to this price point, it's astonishing that the restaurant has opted to embrace so much of the McChintzyness that the fast food industry has gone to great lengths to abandon in recent years. Back-lit menu board? Check. Cheap plastic trays that *maybe* get wiped between uses? Check. Big trays of plastic utensils that people's grubby hands have been rummaging through all day? Check. Soon you're eating miso soup out of a styrofoam cup against the glow of the hard fluorescent lighting from the kitchen, which at night provides most of the illumination in the dining room. Since a sign asks customers to bus their own tables, you'll end this delightful experience by sorting out the contents of your tray as they do, mercifully, use real plates. On the plus side, the sushi itself was pretty good. My rolls were well-formed and the fish tasted fresh. The counter staff was also extremely friendly. My two rolls, miso soup, and iced tea clocked in at close to $20, including tax. This is not substantially less than the prices at sushi restaurants that offer such extragavagant luxuries such as table service and busboys. The customer experience is a concept that Sushi West's owners are clearly unconcerned with. The "cash only" policy is clearly another middle finger to the patron offered up by management that couldn't care less. A sign inside the restaurant proclaims it to be "the future of sushi". Ok this place SNAPPED!!! Really fresh, and great tasting sushi for a really good price. Its not the best by any means when it comes to variety or dining experience but its super fast (almost like a fast food sushi place but don't let that effect your decision to come here because you must!) and its super clean. I ordered the Tri Color Don Sushi Bowl which comes with 4 pc. tuna, 2 pc. yellowtail, and 2 pc. salmon sashimi, cucumbers, avacado, carrot, pickled ginger and wasabi over sushi rice. All for $9.95!!!! Such a steal! I ate the whole thing and was satisfyingly full but not too stuffed so it was the perfect size. When I'm back home in Long Beach, this is the one sushi place I always go to. For what I'm paying for, it's totally worth it. Cheap food and pretty quality tasting food. I always get the traditional california rolls (no imitation crab here), and the alaskan roll. With 3 fast food sushi restaurants so to my work, I decided to try each one of them - Sushi Boy, Sushi West, and Hawaiian sushi. Of course, like everyone else has mentioned this place is cash only. Lucky for me, I had cash! I had the Hawaiian roll ($8) and the Atlantic roll ($12 - picture of a new specialty roll that was posted on the counter). Both of them were pretty - the different colors of the rolls and orchid placed in the middle. I like the way they mix their crab. As far as eating it though - I'm quite picky with my rice. The rice is really hard - but I guess it has to be since they have a sushi roller machine that makes their rolls for them. If it were a decent and rice it would probably make the machine stuck. Yeah! they have this machine that rolls the sushi for them.., no wonder the rolls look like someone just threw it together. I'm not even going to comment on the non-Asian people working and making the rolls. Bixby Knolls is not an Asian community so I really don't care who makes my sushi... I just want them to make it correctly. Aside from everything, they do have a good menu selection. On the downside, I think the quality is not very good which is probably why some of the fish are not very good. One of the few places that I get a bang for my buck! I usually order the combo platters with Sesame Chicken (good stuff), teriyaki salmon (tender and sweet), and California roll. The portions are large and last me for 2 meals. It also comes with soup and salad. And man is that salad dressing good. I haven't tried the Rolls. The food is not oily and just right. The beef is stir-fried with grilled onions and noodle bits, so everything is sweet and savory -mixed tempura: shrimp and veggies are deep-fried to perfection and not an oily, soggy mess like other tempura I've experienced -spicy salmon roll: they are definitely not stingy with the salmon! There is a lot of salmon in each piece along with cucumber bits and 2) -pork cutlet: deep fried perfectly; not just all batter, there is a good bite of meat -potato croquette: one of my faves! a must try for potato lovers! -spicy tuna handroll: a nice portion of spicy tuna, rice and cucumber PRICE I think the prices are more than fair. After you try it, let me know if you find anywhere else that gives that much food for the same price and quality. And you know how they keep their prices down? They are cash only--i.e., they don't have someone taking away 1-3% of their income just because the paper inside your wallet became too heavy to carry around. As the great Jerry Maguire once said... "Help [them] help you." On quality. Their fish isn't the creme de la creme of the marketplace, they don't carry toro, their chefs aren't imported from Tokyo's finest, but nor should you want them to be. There are many other fine sushi establishments where you can spend big big money to get your "real" experience, but Sushi West's beauty lies in its unpretentiousness: you get what you pay for, and then a lot more. Id give this 10 stars if I could. Price is low, dishes are huge & food is delicious. I always get the 3 item combo (sesame chicken, gyoza which is AMAZINGLY crunch, and California rooms) which is about $7 and it's enough for two days! I've also tried the west roll which is what I'm currently in love with and it's great, the ingredients are so fresh and it just tastes amazing period The workers are also very nice here and sometimes it gets crowded but I always find somewhere to sit, id say the only sucky thing is probably the parking because they share a lot with trader joes and we all know how that gets. read more

I fail to understand the rave reviews for this place and let me tell you why. Cute little cafeteria style sushi spot, absolutely packed. You'd think the sushi would be very fresh with the high rate of turnover. But it isnt. It isn't fresh. Albacore (sans ponzu), yellowtail, tuna & spicy scallop roll. All not fresh. What's up, I said to myself says I. So I saunter over to the sushi bar to take a gander. There are multiple trays of pre-cut fish. Not. Good. Sushi chef must prep in the morning and then all the guy behind the counter has to do is throw it all together. I didnt even see the guy behind the counter with a knife. Bad business model, IMO. Although they certainly do not appear to be hurting for business. To me, this is not sushi worth eating. Fail. Also, the slices are transparently thin, which I imagine is how they keep the prices so low. Friendly staff, very clean. Great green salad with lots of spicy radish sprouts, no complaint there. I eat here often. It's fairly decent sushi, made quickly and for an excellent price. They are always polite and fast and have NEVER got an order wrong, which says a lot considering the price range. Parking is crowded; it's a small shared lot with Trader Joe's and have you ever been to a TJ with enough parking? Nope. There is street parking available on Atlantic and about 1/2 a block down Carson which is where I park if it's around the get off work/dinner/shopping time. I especially like the Dragon Roll and the soy dressing they put on their salads. And their combos offer you a lot of selection of mostly healthy food choices so if you're trying to eat smart, or get some variety for your dollar, that's the way to go. You can certainly get better sushi, but usually at a much higher price. read more

Sushi West was my first "fast-food" sushi joint, and I don't why I've never been before! Order from the menu at the cashier, and sit where you can find a spot (warning: it's a struggle). When someone says to try their sesame chicken, LISTEN! Ohmygawd, they get down with this dish! Heaven in your mouth. I ordered a crunch roll and alaskan roll. Not realizing that the alaskan roll was raw, I went up to the cook and asked them to bake it for me. They said they couldn't do that, but they would remake me whatever roll I wanted. That was so nice of them! The lady even brought it out to me. In other words, great customer service! The quality of the food is high, and the presentation is pretty! So I went there today to pick up a quick lunch- I thought this place would've been expensive and super busy because of the crowded parking lot. Yes, it was busy but the food was dang quick and it was not expensive at all. I ordered the dragon roll, the shrimp tempura inside was decently big. The eel and avocado on top was decently delicious. If you are looking for decent sushi thats reasonably priced, Sushi West is your place. What really got me to write a review other than the less than 3 mins wait were: 1. they provided a tiny wasabi dish. seriously, this is my very first time that i can actually mix my wasabi with soy sauce w/o the mess. 2. i have this hawaiian orchid decorated on my dragon roll, this little thought has made my 10 mins lunch happy. Just finished eating their Sashimi Bowl and miso soup. I was very happy with it. I was driving home from work, craving sushi but didn't feel like finding a sushi joint along the way. I decided to swing by Trader Joe's and pick up one of their packaged sushi trays. Not ideal, but I just wanted to get home. Luckily, the Trader Joe's near my place has a very tiny parking lot so I wasn't able to park in front of the store. Instead, I parked in the first spot I saw and looked up to see Sushi West. It must have been fate. Now I have a great sushi place a block from my place. If only it was more visible from the street. I would have been going there since I moved to this address a few months ago. I will update this when I try more of their items. But they were quick and friendly. They were getting pretty busy by the time I left so I must be on to something. Verdict: The food was fresh and well prepared so I felt confident eating without worrying about major cross contamination. I will definitely go here regularly. It is cash only but not expensive so not a huge deal. UPDATE: I have now eaten at this restaurant several times and had many different (within my dietary restrictions) items. I had the Sashimi Udon the first time and it was very good. Very fresh. I had the spicy salmon roll, tuna roll and white rice the second time. The spicy salmon wasn't that spicy, but the wasabi makes up for that. I had the spicy scallop roll on my most recent visit. It was good, but again not very spicy by itself so I doused it with wasabi. Overall, this place is so fast and so fresh that even if it isn't perfect I will still be going back again and again. The cash only part would definitely be a deterrent if I wanted to order a lot of food. Side note for other glutards: Their soy sauce is not Gluten Free. My biggest problem with this place is that they went several years only accepting cash which is frustrating when you're on the go and don't have cash handy. The beginning of the year they started accepting debit but it must be a $10 purchase. Then I order a FULL MEAL (which isn't even their cheapest option) and the total is $10.30 Then they tell me my meal was $8 something before tax and it needs to be $10 before tax. They are basically a notch above fast food...why wouldn't they accept debit and keep it simple? All their petty things regarding payment is very frustrating. read more

Located right across the street from my work sushi west has become a staple for our office . I usually go with the three item combo and get double sesame chicken and the California sushi rolls . The serving sizes are pretty decent considering the price of the combo . The combo comes with sesame chicken , tempura served on a bed of rice and salad with the sushi rolls . I have yet to receive poorly cooked food from the cooks here at sushi west . The place can get packed for both lunch and dinner so you can always phone yor order in and just pick it up . They move so much product the food is usually cooked to order and not just sitting there . The to-go is fast but the quality of the presentation is still amazing. Not just slapped in a container but placed neatly. I also like the fact the the staff is Japanese. I can order in Japanese and make jokes in Japanese. Very busy and relaxed vibes all around. I never make it in time for the curry plates though. Poorly cut fish. Rubbery nori (seaweed wrap) on the sushi rolls. Fish had signs of being previously frozen and quick thawed. Wasabi was discolored either from being old or sitting out all night and day. Shoga (pickled ginger) was oddly colored and tasted even worse....like it had also sat to long in the open. The only thing passable was the tice. It well prepared and seasoned just right. The Miso soup was also decent. But this place doesn't call itself rice west. Will not be going back.
