I've been going to Sushi West for almost ten years! One thing about Sushi West, it's not the typical sit down sushi restaurant. It's very casual. It's similar to a fast food restaurant where you order at the counter and you pick up your food when it's called. When you finish eating you put away your plates and throw out your trash. I love Sushi West. There's always plenty of parking and service is fast. My mom always orders the three combo while I get the Alaskan roll. I'm always satisfied with the quality and the amount of the food they they give us. In terms of ambiance, I love how the windows stretch along the entire restaurant. Not only do you get a soup and salad included with your meal, you can choose from various items like sesame and teriyaki chicken, shioyaki and teriyaki salmon, sukiyaki beef, tempura, and even sushi. The food is always piping hot and delicious and the portions are so generous, you're sure to have leftovers! The staff here is kind as well. Great little gem. This is one of my favorite casual Japanese places in the Long Beach area. Although their service is average, their food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. My go-to dish is a bento box called the "favorite combo". Tons of food! It comes with chicken teriyaki, white rice, side salad, 4 piece California roll, miso soup and tempura (shrimp, sweet potato, green bean and zucchini). I think it's enough to share since I always take home leftovers. Soda fountain is self serve, but you have to ask for lids and straws. Since the Trader Joe's moved, parking isn't as much of a challenge anymore. Try not going during traditional meal times to avoid the crowds. Definitely will be back again! read more

A couple weekends ago, my mom came over to have lunch with me and the baby. I planned to take her somewhere fancy, but then she brought two of her friends from church and everyone was in a hurry. The ladies wanted to go to Sushi West. I live so close to this place, and I used to park in the lot all the time for Trader Joe's (before it moved) or Coffee Bean. It was a Sunday afternoon, and the place was PACKED! The five of us found a four-person table in the back and grabbed and extra chair. All together, we got the beef teriyaki plate, the salmon teriyaki plate, and the combo plate with sesame chicken, tempura, and California roll. Everything was pretty good. I thought the tempura was too oily, but it's tempura, so...what did I expect? The California roll was bigger and better than expected. This has been a family favorite spot for years. Have been customers for at least a decade! We usually only come for special occasions though since it's a bit of a drive. Every time we come, we always get the 3 item combination plates. I love their salad and dressing! The tempura is my mom's favorite, and anytime we get tempura anywhere else, she always says it doesn't compare to the ones from here. The sesame chicken is also a classic - but if you don't plan on finishing your meal that day, i'd recommend getting another entree as the sesame chicken doesn't hold up well the next day. It gets pretty hard and dry. Beef sukiyaki used to be better back in the days, but I really enjoy the teriyaki salmon, teriyaki beef, and fried fish filet! I've always wanted to try some of their sushi/selections from column B, but change is hard hahaha. Next time though! Also, the portions are awesome. Service is good and workers are nice! Sushi West is good but was better 2 years ago! When you ordered a sashimi platter back then the slice of the sashimi was a nice cut and mouth watering fresh! We ordered a few times since then and their sashimi slices were so thin and definitely what you pay the price for. (Last we ordered was about two to three weeks ago) It was a bit of a disappointment. This is a favorite stop of ours whenever we are in the area. Clean, busy, friendly, and fast. We usually order to go. I had sushi rolls last time. Salmon skin roll and eel. They were delicious but I feel like the portion of fish rolled in was slightly skimpy. For the low price, I suppose this is to be expected. My dad ordered the beef curry bowl... there were exactly THREE small bits of beef, and the rest was carrots and broth. That is NOT what the picture shows! I know, food rarely matches as advertised. It was all still delicious but slightly disappointing. So, this time, we both ordered something different. I thought I'd try the Beach Boy sashimi deal - 9 pieces for $15.50. I don't know if I just pumped it up in my mind, but I was really disheartened when I saw the tiny slices.
