In my past life with Yelp, I had written over 870 reviews and was even part of the "Yelp Elite" for 9 years...but I got burned out. I've now come out of "Yelp retirement" to write this review. We have eaten at Sushi West many, many times in the past 10 years or so and we have had a variety of items from the menu, including different bento boxes and combo plates, the curry, plus of course a variety of different rolls. Everything has been very good and enjoyable. 99% of the time over the years we have dined in, until about 6-7 months ago when we started taking our food to-go more and more often. Everything we have ordered to-go has been just as delicious as when dining in, aside for one glaring exception... the tempura shrimp. Yes it's still the same tempura shrimp as when we dine in and just as delicious looking, but there's one major problem. Please allow me to explain..... When the mixed tempura is served for dining in, it's beautiful, crispy, flavorful and has a small container of tempura sauce sitting next to it on the plate (or bento box) to dip into. OK now when it's ordered to-go... it's still beautiful and crispy, but for some reason, which for the life of me I DO NOT understand.... they pour teriyaki sauce all over the tempura shrimp! WHAT THE.....?? Tempura shrimp is TEMPURA.... NOT teriyaki. OK .... after that experience I learned I can order the tempura w/o the teriyaki sauce, but I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS!!! So the next time I ordered it without the teriyaki sauce and when we got home, no teriyaki, great! However, there was also NO tempura dipping sauce! OH COME ON! This evening when at the counter ordering my to-go order, I asked the counter staff about this, but it was like talking to a deer in headlights, they weren't able to give me any answer. I sincerely hope the owner OR manager of Sushi West is reading this and can PLEASE explain to me WHY for dine in the tempura gets the proper dipping sauce, but to-go it gets drowned in teriyaki sauce? This just does NOT make ANY sense to me!!! Also, no other Japanese restaurant I have been to does this.... just sayin'. Aside from this one "to-go" indiscretion, all the food we have had at Sushi West has been very good and I will still continue eating there. read more

I've been to Sushi West more times than I can count, and it's one of those places that's always worth the drive for me. Whenever my friends and I can't decide where to eat, this is one of my first suggestions because I know it's going to be consistently good. I usually dine in, and while it's not a huge restaurant, there's plenty of seating for a casual meal. The service is always friendly, attentive, and fast. The only time you might wait is if the people ordering ahead of you are taking forever to decide. Otherwise, they do a great job getting everyone's food out quickly. One of my favorite things is the value. The portions are generous, and I almost always leave with leftovers. I switch up my order pretty often, but I usually get one of their combo plates with rice, a small salad, miso soup, and two choices (I'll usually mix it up with something like chicken teriyaki, vegetable tempura, or a sushi roll). Everything I've had has been consistently fresh and satisfying. If I had one tiny complaint, it's that the sesame chicken doesn't actually come with sesame seeds, which always makes me laugh because... shouldn't sesame chicken have sesame seeds? But honestly, that's such a minor thing compared to how good everything else is. This isn't a fancy date-night spot, it's a casual neighborhood sushi restaurant that's great for lunch, dinner, families, or just grabbing a good meal with friends. If you're looking for reliable food, generous portions, and great value, Sushi West is an easy 5 stars from me. read more

Although I'm giving it four stars, I LOVE Sushi West. The reason for the four stars is based on inconvenience not food quality and I will outline that in the negative portion. Postives: I really love the food. I always get a two item plate with either sesame chicken/spicy sesame chiicken or shrimp tempura and my other item is either gyozas or veggie rolls. The sesame chicken is very good and they give you a TON of it. Likewise, the shrimp tempura comes with a few shrimps and it is also very good. The gyozas are always lightly fried and very very tasty. The meal comes with salad, miso soup, and rice and I think it is a steal at 6-7 bucks. Usually there is enough seating and I've never had a problem with food quality. Negatives: I only have one negative and it has to do with them NOT TAKING credit cards. Come on guys! You can pay rent in a nice shopping center with Trader Joes, but you can't take credit or debit cards? I never carry cash and I have to go buy something at Trader Joes to get cash back for Sushi West! This makes my meal a little more expensive and it takes me away from your place. Due to this albeit minor inconvenience, I have to get rid of one star. The food is almost good enough to save the star, but I hope Sushi West takes this review into consideration! read more

In short: lots of food, small prices, consistently very good and friendly service. I'm no lover of the raw stuff and I stick with the Favorite Combo: a Cali roll, chicken teriyaki, shrimp tempura and the ubiquitous Miso soup and salad. For $7.85 this is a great value, a bento box full of honest food that is semi-healthy. I always add on an iced tea which is of the tropical variety and is delicious. The staff, by the way, is very cool. I don't know your names, cash register ladies, but you've always got a smile for the wife and I and it's appreciated. The only thing to be cautious of is that this is a cash-only establishment. But if you're in desperate need, just go by something at the Trader Joes that's 50 feet away and get yourself some cash back. read more

I'm leaving a review of this restaurant for the manager Hirashi who had kept his promise after 7 months. I had ordered 2 combo menu in April with two pieces of scallops short of what was on the menu. When I had complained, the manager said he'll credit the shortage amount on my next order. I was pleasantly surprised to find out just yesterday that they were still keeping around the envelop with cash credit to be picked up by me with my next order. The food was pretty decent (I had Tri Color Don & Rainbow Roll). The fish pieces have gotten slightly thinner, but hey, with this inflation they are still managing to keep the same price since last time. Highly recommend this place!!! read more

For a place where the servers don't really speak English, this place is good. It's CASH only. The food takes about ten minutes. I've ordered the Favorite Combo or Bento and split it with my hubby. It's alot of food for about 8 bucks. They use to have a nicer salad but I guess they're going with the cheaper iceberg lettuce for their salad because of the recession? Sometimes the rice is too soggy. The sesame chicken is good. I dip the tempura in the sauce. I don't know what the other oily sauce is for? Anyone care to guess??? I like how they have so many different rolls to choose from. Water is free but Starbucks is nearby. read more

It's always hard to find a good sushi place in Long Beach and I'm so happy that I came across one! It has a good amount of seating in the store, but you have a take out option so if it looks like you won't get a seat, you can always take it to go! One thing I was surprised that it's not super expensive here. Some bento/sushi places I go to are always at least $12, but some of these options are less than $10. I got the tempura don to go and it was good! I've had a bit of their sushi at a friend's home since they did take out. So far, I'm a fan of this place and will come here when I need a quick sushi fill! read more

I give this place 4 stars. For what it is, it's pretty good. It's definitely nothing fancy. Nothing too inventive or exciting, but when you have a hankering for some quick sushi, it's not bad at all. I think the California rolls are pretty good. Definitely much better than any of the pre-made options that people resort to. I've had the catepillar roll, which I like a lot. The spicy tuna roll is okay, but I wouldn't order it again. The combos are the best deal. You can get 3 items for less than 8 bucks. It includes soup and salad. Once again, cash only. This is a plasticware establishment. That said, the food is outstanding. Order at the counter, pick it up when you're called. NO CREDIT CARDS (the way to keep the cost down). The menu includes nigiri, cut rolls, all the basics, but the star of the show is the bento box menu. The Tenpura udon is fantastic, as are the other bowls. It's topped with soft shell tempura that is also super yummy. Jumbo shrimp roll: Packed with flavor. Topped with imitation crab, and a healthy serving of it as well. The flavors explode in your mouth like a baby is being made. It is just absolutely delish. Caterpillar roll: unable to comment on as I did not try it. The ginger could have been a better quality, I have been to so many sushi places that the ginger they provided was not the best quality. Service was super quick, the lady is extremely nice. Her personality and attitude is amazing. I ended up returning the next day to order a jumbo shrimp roll to go. It hit just as good. They have restrooms available. Parking is in the plaza accompanied with many other businesses.

It was a decent bowl of ramen, just nothing special. I didn't think any of the components were especially great, but they weren't bad at all. My husband said the veggies in his were good, but the broth was too salty so he couldn't drink it. I would probably give three stars just based off food, but the kind and timely service from the waiter bumps the experience up to a four!
