Was very pleasantly surprised how fresh the sushi rolls, sushi, and sashimi tasted. From the initial exterior view the restaurant doesn't look like much but when you walk in the service quite good. The woman server was very friendly and the chef that served us had a friendly warm smile. The rolls are pretty darn good. We ordered the cypress roll and was surprised how balanced it tasted. You would think strawberries and what looks like a soy sauce balsamic reduction would taste good with a crab sushi roll but we were very surprised. I would have to say the fish is fresh. Rolls are simple and delicious. We will definitely be back. If you like Asian wannabe sushi joints that drown their rolls in eel sauce and spicy mayo, this isn't the place for you. But if you want fresh real Japanese inspired sushi this is the place for you. Try the black dragon roll. Pretty spicy with Serrano chili but the roll taste so damn good. Award goes to Sushi World for the most artistic Udon that I have ever seen. This sushi is pretty tasty too and this place is generally more affordable than other sushi joints in the OC area. Although, I wouldn't say it would be my number choice for getting food, the place was pretty decent ant I wouldn't be opposed to going back. The Udon was pretty tasty. My sister and I were looking for some spicy Udon. Sushi World will givev you a seasoning to sprinkle into your soon to make it spicier. I would recommend mixing it before adding too much. Let me first get this out there that I find it really cute when my parents dig a restaurant and start going there at least twice a month. This was the case with Sushi World, a popular Japanese joint in Cypress, CA. Recently, my mom and dad told me that they started going to Sushi World after receiving several coupons in the mail. They really enjoyed the restaurant, and given that they've been a couple times, I decided to accompany them for a round at Sushi World before heading back to the Bay Area. Sushi World is located on Meridian Drive near a big plaza in Cypress. It's pretty accessible by surface streets if you are coming from Santa Ana, Garden Grove, or even Anaheim. We literally drove on Katella and got there fast. Once we got there, we were seated right away. Sushi World actually closes around 9, and so make sure you get there before then; however, my parents told me rush hour is actually around 6-7, so optional time is probably a bit after 7. Protip: they also have all-day happy hour - I believe on Mondays and Tuesdays - if you want cheaper food. Compared to most sushi restaurants, Sushi World actually has a pretty average menu. They have around 14 specialty rolls, about 10-11 different types of sashimi, as well as a few appetizers too. If you are interested in Omakase, Chirashi, or sushi combos, you can also find them here. My parents and I ended up getting around 5-6 different items, some of which I've reviewed below. -Soft Shelled Crab Salad (7/10). My parents really like ordering soft shelled crab salad at Japanese restaurants, and I understand why. Sushi World's version of a soft shelled crab salad isn't too bad. The crab was very crispy, had some nice flavor too it, and the salad was a good compliment. I was a bit disappointed in the small portion size of the crab though... -Bentley Roll (9/10). Bentley Roll is a spicy tuna roll with seared salmon on top. A big fan of both salmon and tuna, I really enjoyed this roll. It was simple, but the sesame dressing came a long way. -Rainbow Roll (5/10). Even though it looked pretty, the Rainbow Roll can be passed on. I'm not a big fan of shrimp on sushi rolls because it find it very cheap, and you get a few pieces here with them. The rolls were a bit dry and tasted lackluster. -Jalapeno Yellowtail (10/10). This was probably one of my favorite items of the night. The Jalapeño Yellowtail was essentially a plate with strips of hamachi and jalapeño dressing. The yellowtail tasted very fresh and I thought that the jalapeño oil and ponzu sauce was definitely not overwhelming. If you love raw fish, get this one! -Cherry Salmon (8/10). Cherry Salmon sashimi wasn't too bad. For around $10, you get about 5-6 slices, all of which are pretty big. I've definitely had fresher salmon, but I didn't regret this order. -Yummy Roll (10/10). Let me say that it's very hard to make sushi rolls that are topped with lemon slices. The lemon is usually too overwhelming for the roll. However, this one was MAGNIFICENT! The Yummy Roll was perfectly made with a blend of soft shelled crab, some escolar, lemon, Sriracha, and jalapeño. It was crunchy, it was tasty, and it was succulent.This was definitely the best roll of the night. Overall, I found Sushi World a great experience. I'm glad my parents showed me this place because the food here was very decent. Most of the rolls and sashimi that I tasted were memorable, and the price wasn't bad at all (overall, around $60?). This place has great food, has coupons, has happy hour, and has decent service. What more can you ask for? I'll give Sushi World a "nice-su, you can take your parents here, and they'll be happy" because my parents can vouch for this place. Eat well and prosper, read more

F*cking disgusting. I came here a few times in the past before Covid. Tonight the place wasi nfested with fruit flies. Around 20 gnat flying around or booth, on the walls, landing on our food. It was too much chaos for one table. The gnats became more and more and while observing the room, all the condiments were covered in saran wrap and you could see fly strips hanging down from inside the kitchen . This place needs a health inspector to visit. The quality of the food was very low this time. The color or the fish was off and it was slimy and room terperature. It if the food was good the fly situation was nausiating. I complained twice to the waitresses about the amount of flies buzzing around. One shrugged and the other said sorry and walked away. I felt bad for the waitresses, since it not their fault, but at leadt offer to move us or warn people of the situation. First time here, yesterday. Treated my friend to a birthday lunch because it's walking distance from her work and we are always up for great sushi. Did my Yelp homework, and I'm pretty picky about my sushi quality. PLEASANTLY PLEASED with the quality, taste, freshness, happy hour prices (all day Monday & Tuesday) & sushi chef, who was very professional & knowledgeable. (I think his name was Alden?... my bad, I forgot) We tried Ankimo for the first time and um... it was ok. Monk Fish has got to be the ugliest fish EVER, so don't look it up, but Ankimo is the liver from the Monk Fish. (it's cooked, quite a delicacy at $13 for one serving and resembles pate) Hamachi, Salmon, Albacore, Shrimp, Ono, Maguro and Natto round out the happy hour special nigiri sushis. First time having Ono (slightly seared) aka: Escolar and it was DELICIOUS. The salmon skin salad is also on the HH and it's fresh and amazing. Won't be the last time. I'll be back... I've been here at least 5 times over the last couple years. I went again last month and I will not be returning. They hired new staff that are not friendly/welcoming, the atmosphere was weird and awkward when dining at the bar. I came for happy hour with my aunt and the entire place smelled like bleach (I understand it's important to keep the restaurant clean), but while we were sitting at the bar I was shocked to see one of the chefs was mopping the floor AND making our sushi at the same time. When I asked another chef if he was moping the floor and touching food, he said "no, he's washing his hands". But I was sitting at the bar and did not see him wash his hands. He could have went to the back to wash them but either way he was mopping the floor with bleach and using his hands to make our sushi which was really weird and made it very difficult to finish our food. I had a sudden and avoidable urge for a California Roll amongst other things. If you didn't already know, most sushi places shut down between 2-5 as most people are at work and therefore they are slower. They usually re-open around 5 or 6. So this was the worst possible time to have such cravings as it was 3:44PM. So I pulled up my 11th best friend (Yelp) and decided to go on a journey. This place was open so I decided to check it out. The lady who greeted me was pleasant and was nice in showing me the menu. Even through I was taking it to go, she had me take a seat and brought me a cup of water WITH ICE. In California, that's like hitting the lottery for your mouth. This deserves 4 by itself. I mean I almost started blushing which is hard for black people to do! You know what I'm sayinggggg!!!!!! Decided to grab Togo after my appt next door. I placed the order and 30 mins later still not done. The sushi is decent but definitely not memorable. The cut sushi wasn't even cut all the way through so you can already tell it's novice chefs. Both sushi chefs as well as the manager / supervisor were not wearing masks but the servers were. I am here to support small businesses and I wear a mask to protect others but if you are a business and you have no interest in protecting your clients by wearing a mask during rise in cases and mask mandates, I will stop supporting you. Ahhh... where do I start? We absolutely love this sushi spot. Not only is the sushi and other foods delicious and fresh, the chefs and staff are genuinely nice. They remember us every time we're in and ask how we're doing. They also sometimes throw in a few extra sushi pieces from time to time when ordering takeout which is always a really nice surprise. When we dine in the sushi chefs will sometimes prepare us some special omakase dishes for us... kind of like a special secret dish that we get to try out haha. A simple salmon sushi dish is my favorite and I always order at least a couple when coming here and the fish is always fresh. The salmon has that buttery taste and silky texture to it and it's just so delicious. On their hot side they offer up a huge assortment of delicious dishes. Everything from teriyaki chicken and beef to tempura bento boxes. They also have some of the best chicken fried rice out there. Another staple dish I always get here. My girlfriend orders the unagi (eel) bowl. The eel is cooked and served over white rice with some side garnishes and topped with the sweet eel sauce. We also got what they call the cypress roll which is a California roll, rolled with fried tempura shrimp, topped with strawberries, a sweet ponzu glaze, and spicy sriracha mayo on top. The sweet, savory, and spicy works well together. Today the chef surprised me and prepared me an incredible dish of bluefin toro sushi with a special ponzu type sauce drizzled on top with a single garnish of fried garlic carefully placed on top of the fish as well. Then the chef quickly hits the sushi with a torch which doesn't cook the fish but offers a light smokey flavor to the sushi... it was heaven. Did I mention he gave it to me on the house? All around great atmosphere, GREAT food, and great service. If you're looking for good food and a good time, I definitely recommend this place. read more

With a name like Sushi World, one would expect mediocre to sub-par quality food, especially this far away from all the major food hubs. Fortunately, the quality of the food here is great and so is the service. The restaurant is definitely on the smaller side so expect a wait on weekends. Although half of our party hadn't arrived yet the hostess was friendly enough to give us a small table to start ordering drinks and look at the menu. You won't go wrong with any of the nigiri or sashimi here. The fish all tasted fresh, clean, and vibrant in color. Some of my favorites of the night were the uni, toro, and cherry salmon. The sake selection here isn't huge, but the bottles they do carry are decent. Service was prompt and attentive; everyone on the staff greeted us with smiles from start to finish. Let's say...I took my friend to Sushi World because we were in the mood for some sushi and I had to buy her ice cream afterwards to make up for suggesting to eat at this place. Initially, I thought...the pics look amazing, what can go wrong? But, sushi quality was below average. We went during happy hour and it was still quite expensive for the quality we got. Salmon was slimy and jello like texture. Halibut was dry, yet sticky? It's weird! Is it old fish? The roll was tiny and barely any fish for $11. Awesome happy hour! All day Monday and Tuesdays. Wednesday through Sunday from 3pm-5pm! I've been meaning to come here for a long time, but kept forgetting. Since it was my first time I wanted to order many things from the HH menu. We got the jalepeno poppers, squid karaage kushi, spicy tuna rice cakes, negi hama, tekka maki, spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, salmon sushi, peppered salmon sushi, and yellowtail sushi. I thought that the jalepeno poppers were okay. I probably would skip this next time. The squid karaage was good! It was smaller than I anticiapted, but good. The spicy tuna rice cakes was one of my favorites! I've always loved this dish though. I love crispy rice. The rest of the food was good! I really liked the salmon sushi. Sushi World is killing the game with this small spot on the outer skirts of Cypress. I made it with about 30 minutes left for their Happy Hour Special. I took a glance and ordered a tuna roll and spicy rice cake. The Sushi chef was amazingly helpful and fast! Within 5 minute I was served both rolls. The rolls were perfectly put together with a fresh and light taste. I enjoyed the tuna roll, the Happy Hour portions were small, but so delicious. The tuna melted in my mouth, it wasn't too fatty, it wasn't too warm, it wasn't heavily packed with rice, it was just right! With scarfing down this roll I was excited to dip into the crispy rice and tuna. Again HH portions were significantly smaller than the original. This roll was a mix of tuna and spices on a bed of breaded and rice that was deep fired. I loved Sushi World's version of this roll, it was not overly deep fried so it wasn't too oily, again just right! I was very happy with everything I've ordered up to this point so I had to try a menu item. I asked if they had a baby scallop roll and again the wonderful Chef was extremely helpful and nice and said "of course! And I'd be more than happy to get you one ASAP!". Within 5 minutes this very large baby scallop roll was placed in front of me. The roll consisted of a California roll that was topped off with spicy mayo, baby scallops, masago, and other ingredients baked to brown and served hot! It was perfected and was extremely fresh and continued to have the same consistency of simplicity. I ordered a party platter from here because I was hosting a dinner with some friends and knew I wanted a sushi tray for us to add to our menu. I reached out to see if Sushi World could provide a custom tray with just tuna & salmon nigiri and sure enough, I got a response from Peter saying they would be able to accommodate my request. I arranged a time to pick it up, and even after a couple of complications on my end, Peter was still happy to assist. The platter was exactly what I was imagining and the fish itself was super fresh (and was definitely the highlight of the dinner!). Grand re-opening was July 2012, so all reviews prior to that don't apply anymore ... This is my go-to lunch spot for fresh cuts of yummy sashimi, I usually do a chirashi bowl.
