Five stars because it's a pandemic and they have individual outdoor seating booths with heaters! Excellent service, fast and friendly, and if you take the green tea they refill frequently. Beautiful crockery and comfortable furniture. The food is good if you eat fish; for vegetarians, you're really limited to a few sushi options. There are no really vegetarian hot entrees; the udon soup has fish broth, and the tempura is fried in the same oil as everything else, plus the sauce for dipping is not vegetarian (but if you want, they can make an onion based dipping sauce that is vegetarian. There's also a side salad with a vegetarian dressing that would actually make a good dipping sauce. So yeah, not overwhelmed by the vegetarian food options, but it has everything else; service, ambiance, covid precautions. read more

Mackerel that doesn't tasty fishy. That is the sign of a good sushi restaurant. I personally hate sea urchin, but after the mackerel they get the shot. Second time in my life I've had it and didn't gag. Only other time was in Japan so for that, 5 stars. I believe the Ocean Roll with eel and mango topped with salmon, tuna, avocado, crunch, and spicy mayo was my highlight. However, I was also very happy with the tuna served with the Sushi Sashimi Combo. The Salmon Avocado Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and Shrimp Tempura Roll were all fine, but didn't leave much impression. BEST sushi in Brooklyn that i have tried. I can not believe the quality of the food that comes out of this small hip hole in the wall joint. The fish is so FRESH it's unbelievable. I would absolutely recommend the shrimp shumai. They make it themselves i believe. I only took pictures of a few things but we CHOWED. We had three rolls a bunch of sashimi, pork gyoza, pork ramen and more. Every single thing we had was delicious, fresh, flavorful and made with attention to detail. 10000% recommend. Love their assorted seaweed salad. I sub out the accompanying dressing for the yuzu option that's offered with other dishes on their menu because I'm a yuzu freak. No problem. The yellowtail jalapeño app, another fave as are the tuna tastings. I cannot recommend their maki rolls. It appears as if the sushi chef dislikes making them. Sloppy, loose and little attention to detail, which to me, is sacrilegious when it comes to the preparation of sushi/sashimi. Bonus points for the lovely private dining houses. These have room for 4 and feel airy with plenty of light streaming through. Checked yelp to find a spot that's halfway my home and the boyfriend's house and figured it's a happy middle ground. Old reviews indicated it's BYOB but that's no longer the case. Don't bother bringing in your own booze folks, they have a liquor license now! Sushi and sashimi combo for two people was ample enough to satisfy the fatty in us and the fish fiend in me. I would recommend the place if you're around the area. There are other spots that can easily top Yashin BUT you have to give the place some props for allowing us to bring our own alcohol and drink it despite having their license. That and they have art for sale. Yes, art for sale. The giant pieces you see on their walls are up for grabs, that is if you have that dough to spare; price tag is about 1000 visits to Yashin. read more

I've been to Yashin twice. Both experiences were different. The first time was fantastic. I thought the sushi was fresh, the service was courteous, and the ambiance was nice. Of all the rolls they have, their California Roll is probably one of the best I've had - and I know it's the most cliché sushi ever, but I had never had anything like it like in Yashin. I told myself I definitely would come back here when I'm in Park Slope. But then I came back and I was disappointed. I ordered the California and Dragon rolls, and they were both dry and tasteless. Their crab was harder to chew and it lacked flavor. The server forgot to give us the soy sauce plate, and the bathroom was clogged when I arrived. We ordered the Rainbow and spicy tuna rolls and they were much better. Fortunately they cancelled my California roll after I talked to them. Would I come back here again? Maybe. But I'll know to try other places first if I'm in the area. read more

Such amazingly fresh sushi. Great service. Really cool decor. What more can you ask for? I loved this cute little spot and I can't wait to come back. The fish was super fresh, it melted in my mouth, was delicate, and had no strong fishy flavor (fresh fish should NOT have a fishy taste.) The fish was so fresh that my spicy tuna roll was not prepared with a lot of mayo. This is the first time I've had a spicy tuna roll like this, i feel other places must drown it in mayo to cover up the quality of the fish. Not here. Just the right amount, It really let the flavor of the fish come through. It was perfect and my new favorite. As a matter of fact, usually when I have sushi I dip it in extra spicy mayo and eel sauce that I order on the side. I found myself enjoying it the proper way (lol) with just a tiny bit of soy sauce. It didn't need anything else. Totally different level of enjoyment and appreciation for the fish than anywhere I've been thus far. I also had the Kani salad, which was deeeeeelish. Best Kani salad I've had so far. Edamame was good. And the hot green tea was potent, flavorful, earthy and had a natural sweet aftertaste. I've been unimpressed with takeout from this place on two occasions, once in February for sushi and again just now for chicken udon. The sushi I got (Kaisen don mini, orange roll, spicy tuna) was not as delicious as I hoped, just standard. The white miso soup was the highlight of that order, which is why they are getting 3 instead of 2 stars. Since they were newly opened, I thought I would give them another try. Today's kashiwa udon was plain, boring, generally lacking in flavor. Back home I had to add sriracha, lemon, and soy sauce for it to be something I wanted to finish. The chicken and mushrooms were cooked appropriately, but that wasn't enough. Based on others' praise, I want to believe that they can do better, but I can't say I'm going to try them again anytime soon. read more

I especially loved how they had the sushi chef's area. The tables area bit small but definitely sturdy. When we got the 3 sushi rolls, our immediate attention was on their California roll. Most of the time, we're used to seeing imitation crab meat but we noticed it looked different. Without much thought, I grabbed it to eat. As I was chewing, I knew it didn't taste like imitation but I couldn't pinpoint a reason. As a person who doesn't eat crab much, it took my boyfriend telling me it was real crab before realization dawned on me. It was absolutely delicious! Their salmon roll was also fresh, rich and fatty. Their eel roll was good as well. But definitely try their salmon and California! Sake oyakodon - my boyfriend loved it. The salmon was very good for the price we paid. He thinks everything was well worth it. And their ikura was really good! It didn't taste fishy, but rich and deep, like the ocean. It paired well with the rice and everything was seasoned well. I had the kashiwa soba. It was seasoned well - not too salty for my taste. The only down side and the reason why I took off 0.5 stars was the fact their in one of my chicken pieces, they had a towel. :( Aside from that, their chefs and wait staff was very kind and their service was great. Whenever I feel like rewarding myself, I get omakase. I ordered the sushi omakase at the bar and was pleasantly surprised at the array I was given. I eat everything, so I gave the chef the okay to hand me whatever pieces he desired. Appetizers, sushi, one hand roll, and dessert is included. There was a good mix of blue fish and classic pieces like toro. Unlike many sushi restaurants that offer omakase I've been to, this place gives you a bigger cut of fish. My only complaint is that sometimes I got very large, concentrated amounts of wasabi. I love wasabi, but the amount was inconsistent and overpowering at times, covering up the taste of the fish. read more

One waitress, two sushi chefs and who knows how many ppl in the kitchen. The waitress was nice but seems like we couldn't communicate with her sometimes. She didn't understand what we were asking until we used Mandarin. Also funny seeing how many people come in greeting the people as if they're regulars and know people. I saw a review about keeping their sake bottle for next time. I think I saw that happen to the table next to me. When they came, the waitress brought out a labeled bottle. I got the salmon grilled salmon, lol at the name. It comes with soup or salad. I got the soup. I typically don't like miso soup but this didn't have that strong of a taste so it was aight. The salmon had a slightly crunchy crust with some buttery sauce. It could be crunchier. The sauce can be more buttery and honeyer. The veggies that came with it were just blanched. It'd be nice if they could be sautéed too. There was too little rice too. I wish rice could be on the side in a separate bowl. 10% off with yelp check in Having flies is a big nono Need to balance off the high ratings with this. Definitely not worth 4.5* read more

I probably a 2-1/2 for me. Small interior that is bright, sunny, and clean. We were going to have nigiri sushi but they charge far more for that than anything else. The deal seems to be in sashimi as they charge the same for two pieces of sashimi and one piece of nigiri. I had to ask twice since it's usually the opposite. I think it's because this is a take out place, not a real strict sushi place so the sashimi probably isn't thick or the best cuts as it is culturally supposed to be. We went with maki because of that. We started with some agedashi tofu, which was too thick on crust but nice and hot. They serve it with way to little broth and i did add a splash of soy to improve the flavor. The rolls were good. The rice was very very slightly warm which I prefer to cold (rice should be room temp at least!) Our salmon roll had a bit of a gristly piece but otherwise things were fine. Seems on par with most take out spots but tends to be pricier than similar level restaurants. I blame that more on the hood than the place. Bottom line, if you're not really a sushi connoisseur and just enjoy the standard stuff, this place will be just fine. read more
