Visited again last night as our normal local go-to apparently decided to close on Mondays (yet not update the hours posted on its website.) Seated right away, which you'd hope at 8 pm on a Monday. Service was attentive and good, despite the fact that we were handed off from one waitress to another early on in our visit. Menu is quite extensive, packed to the gills with all sorts of artisan rolls -- but if you're like me, and aren't really big on avocado, shrimp, or crab salad, you may find options on that side of the menu a little limited compared to other sushi venues. Ordered spicy tuna rolls, some tobiko roe, and a couple pieces of tuna nigiri. Started with the tuna nigiri, and was a bit disappointed rigt off the bat -- texture was okay, but each piece exhibited a very slight and unusual scent and aftertaste that made me question the age/ quality. Tobiko nigiri - quite good, and plentiful heapings of roe in each piece. Spicy tuna - nothing special to write home about here. The tuna in these is the pulverized scraps of tuna, so if you want your spicy tuna rolls to have chunky, fresh cuts of tuna inside -- you'll be disappointed (I can go either way). Found these to be quite spicy right off the bat, so at least there's that. Read an article the other night that proclaimed this to be the best sushi restaurant in Michigan -- it's not bad, but in terms of bang-for-the-buck, menu variety, or taste/ quality of food, it still has a ways to go to truly meet that metric. If all those elements were as good as the service and venue itself, maybe -- but not yet. read more

I had rotten sushi better than this when I was w/ my boy Tyrone in the ocean. Sushi Zen is tucked in the corner of a strip mall in downtown Brighton. After moving here in August of 2015, we were eager to find a regular sushi spot that had all of our favorite kinds of rolls. We found Sushi Zen. The dining experience isn't really anything to get excited about. It's a ton of tables crammed in to a tiny space to make sure they can get as much revenue coming in to the restaurant as they possibly can. And I get that. It's just uncomfortable being able to hear the conversations of every table around you. The sushi was really good, which seems to be the common theme with all these reviews. Hipsters come and get your low grade sushi at rediculously high prices! I've been to sushi bars nationwide and found this place to be as low grade as one possibly could muster. It seems that many corners are cut as far a quality product are concerned. The sashimi was average grade (was even served salmon with skin remnants on it) The rolls were sloppily put together, falling apart as soon as chopsticks hit them. Also, it seems that every roll was a slight variation on itself only with more or less sauce. Rolls should have 4-5 different components that contrast in taste that come together in each bite. These rolls can be found in your local grocery store. The rice was by far the most upsetting of the whole experience. Uncle Ben would have been proud that his product is being served daily. Topping it off, the staff was inexperienced and very aloof. We were sat down and forgotten about, only having to grab the nearest "manager" for service. Overall, we ended up spending more money here than than any other place we have eaten at, leaving us feeling robbed. read more

Just a quick review on Sushi Zen. I visit Sushi Zen at least once a month and believe is one of the best places for sushi in the Detroit metro area. They fly their fish in 2x a week and it is typically fresh and well prepared. However, I am guessing it is flown in on Tuesdays and Fridays as my lack luster experiences (as outlined below) were on Sunday & Monday. For reference, I am not one of the people out there that have tried sushi a few times with little reference points. I actually travel extensively to Asia (at least 5-6 times a year including Japan) along with making it a staple in my domestic travel. Anyway, my past two experiences at SZ have been quite disappointing. I visited tonight with my family and an international colleague & his wife. Everything from the rice quality (dry) to fish seemed off. fish portions were quite small and we even had a roll topped with salmon that was sliced so thin the fish was transparent. Our Black Dragon roll was also served cold (has happened one other time in the past). As a side note, SZ used to have the best unagi around with huge rolls. However, I believe high market pricing of eel over the past two years has had an impact on these rolls. We never get any entrées but ordered chicken yakisoba tonight for my colleagues wife. The chicken was so dry I am confident it was pre-cooked and sliced chicken like one can get from Gordon Foods. Final point, our server was very polite but it was obvious that she was very new and inexperienced without a good understanding of the menu. For this I give tremendous grace as they have a difficult job and it was obvious that she was very new. Anyway, just curious if others have noticed things being "off" with SZ quality? Three stars is only due to my past positive experiences. I have not given up and promise to write a follow-up review soon. However, with two negatives, I hope I am not holding on to hope for my favorite restaurant in all of Brighton - and likely the surrounding area. read more

I have been to this restaurant on my way to Lansing from Ann Arbor. This restaurant always confuses me. I have been here many time past 10 years and they always had pretty good sushi chefs in the past. I have met one of the best chefs here and they were always treated me with respect and gave me excellent service even with limited resources they had(they only had frozen fish never fresh) However, past several years I have met those who "Used" to be this joins chefs but now they are at other restaurants. I was glad to see them at different locations but I always wonder why they had such high turn over. Yesterday, I had stopped by here on my way back home from Lansing and i had one of the worst experiences. First, the chefs were pretty rude. Not very friendly. They weren't as busy as used to be and I didn't know why i was treat disrespectfully. Secondly, I always have couple of special rolls and one of the garnished flowers were stained with other sauce which I didn't have. I am wondering if they are reusing the garnishments. Third, I found small rock in the sushi rice. They weren't terribly big but they surely ruined my dinner. I never thought this restaurant was horrible but with this type of recent experiences, I don't think I will ever go back there. I know of plenty of better restaurants..... read more

We drive 45 minutes for this sushi!! You'll be pleasantly surprised at the wide array of specialty sushi rolls they offer. And, they are all FANTASTIC! A mai tai along with my sushi is always a must when I'm here. It depends on the day/time but I've dined here midday-- no wait. Saturday night-- long wait. But... Who cares? No curb appeal, so hold your opinion and your appetite until you get to your seat. It was fun to transition from bland strip mall to stylish interior. There were non-Asians making sushi and rolls with beef, but the sushi was great and the service was fun if a little sassy (which I always encourage). When I take someone for sushi I want a feast. We tried half a dozen rolls and it was all good. There uniform/T-shirt is fun so I bought one of those also. I am glad I found this spot. Wow. Just, wow. I didn't think there would be a good sushi place in Brighton. I mean, it's Brighton! And this place is in a strip m all next to an O'Reilly's autoparts! It's good, though. Really. I got some coupons for this place in the mail and figured after all the good I had heard, all the local awards this place got, I would finally go in and try it. I thought the locals were crazy, that no one in Brighton knew what good sushi was and voted this place so high because they were nuts. They aren't nuts. I went in and immediately I wasn't in a strip mall. There isn't an O'Reilly's autoparts store next door. I was in a beautifully, clean, spacious restaurant. It was gorgeous inside. The sushi bar in the back was staffed, not with grumpy, grungy teens, but with several clean, busy chefs which greeted me happily. I sat at the bar, because I enjoy watching them work. If I had any complaint, it was that their menu is HUGE and the variety of rolls they have is mind-blowing. Every one I've had has been delicious. I had the fried dumplings, incredible. Seaweed salad, delicious. The service is amazing. I've had two very courteous waitresses. One of the sushi chef's wife and young son came in and he introduced me to his little boy (who is incredibly adorable). This place is my new go-to spot for sushi. I love sushi. We are regular sushi eaters....like twice a week. We tried sushi zen on the recommendation of my hairdresser. Nothing was really horrible, but nothing was really good either. The edamame was too big and tough, appetizers were fair to middling, but most disappointing was the sushi itself. The rolls were not tight, so they fell apart as you picked them up, and they were generally mediocre. Also, the menu is just way too big.....which is never a good sign. The rolls are also a couple dollars more than what we usually pay at our favorite place, which is consistently excellent. Everything seems clean, so there is that. Service was fine. We absolutely LOVE Sushi Zen! We were frequent diners when it first opened, probably 3-4 times a month. After being relocated to Cleveland for 4 years, we finally moved back to MI and were so excited to visit our favorite place once again! We were not disappointed! It has only gotten better over time. The remodel is gorgeous. The staff is so week trained, very knowledgable and perfectly attentive. But of course, what keeps us coming back is the sushi. Incredibly fresh and creative rolls. I went here for dinner while in town with my family and it was delicious. The 6 of us were seated right away and the service was very speedy. We ordered 8 rolls (I can't remember all of them but I know they included the Red Wings roll, the TNT roll, the Blizzard roll, the Sakura roll, the St. Patrick's roll, and a few others). We ordered so many rolls that the waitstaff brought them out to us on a sushi boat! A+ for presentation. The rolls that were supposed to be spicy were very pleasantly so. The Sakura roll and the Red Wings roll were AWESOME, and the TNT was the best bang for your buck. My mom also had some sweet plum wine that was scrumptious -- I will have to remember to get a glass next time. read more

Tried this place for the first time. No wait around 3pm on a Saturday, service was excellent. I was catching up with a friend and there was no rush. I tried the strawberry blossom roll, AMAZING! Almost like a dessert sushi because it was sweet. The standards like their avocado roll, Philly roll, and chicken teriyaki roll were excellent. It was simply adorned with probably one of each bottle of alcohol they sold and a few bamboo looking pots. My server, Jackie, was prolly the sweetest server I've had in maybe forever. Made sure I got what I wanted and even comped the ice-cream. The sushi rolls were most fulfilling. I was tempted to order some fried tofu but had to skip it. I rarely give five-star reviews of anything, food or otherwise, and this place deserves it. Not that they have the best sushi on the planet, but they do the best with what they can get locally, do it in a really nice setting, with really nice people (with one exception of a brunette hostess who hopefully not work there much longer). The prices, for sushi, are not bad. We usually get the sushi regular, which is a chef's choice of sushi, and then add a couple rolls. This keeps the price down and encourages us to try new things. I love the way the community has embraced this (local) place, it is obviously popular, and I love seeing little kids getting sushi with their parents at the bar. read more

Late summer 2013. Stopped for a quick bite on my return trip to A2. I had been informed by family that the sushi was very good and very affordable! I was making multiple trips back and forth from Ann Arbor to Heartland to spend time with my brother and my nephew. Since I am always open to eating regardless of time I would stop to pick up milkshakes for the boys on my way in ANC eat or snack on the way back. Menu is extensive- lots of unique variation of sushi rolls. Soy paper available for substitution. A few rolls tempura battered and fried ( so much less healthy but dang- I love them!) The lunch special includes a small green salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. Sushi and service were above average. I observed them handle a situation with a customer that was unhappy with the level of heat in their roll, they were very responsive offering to remove it and modify the roll to suit the customer.
