I just added Sushi Masa to my go-to Japanese list! It was our first time here, and everything was great! We got seated quickly. It wasn't a very packed night, but the sushi bar was full. They have a wide variety of offerings, which made it hard to decide what to order. We decided on the edemame, chicken teriyaki & tempura bento subbed with sashimi, and 2 of their special nigiris. Everything was really good. I loved the chicken teriyaki. The teriyaki sauce wasn't too sweet, and the chicken was seasoned. It's been a while since I've had good teriyaki chicken! The sashimi came with 2 pieces of tuna and 2 pieces of salmon, which were fine, decent size and tasted fresh. The shrimp tempura had a unique breading, not the typical panko, and it was so crunchy. The shrimp seemed more like a prawn. It was much larger and had great freshness and sweetness. Really good! The special nigiris we ordered were the aburi sake toro & engawa yuzu. In general, I thought the fish pieces were pretty skinny. Good rice to fish ratio tho. The salmon toro would probably be better with less sauce. It overpowered the fish, and I couldn't enjoy the fattiness of the salmon. The engawa was supposed to be torched, but it wasn't. It was still good tho. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, and I'll definitely be back to try more items. read more

My daughter and I tried this place for the first time. The decor, setting and ambiance is very authentic, cozy, and quiet. My daughter ordered the Mango Bridge sushi which was fresh and taste so good. She had also the Udon soup which was a great pick for a cold night. I ordered the Salmon teriyaki combination with California roll, tempura, miso soup, and rice. The quality and presentation of the food is so good. This is my favorite Japanese restaurant. They have been in business for many years. Even though there are other newer Japanese restaurants in the area. Sushi Masa is still our first choice given the quality of the food, especially if you are looking for authentic good quality sashmi/sushi. Their cooked dishes are very good also. Just attached pictures of the one we ate today. The omakase chirashi is very good. Big piece, great quality and very fresh and tasty fish. The Sake Sampler is very good too. They have several varieties to choose from. I got the Sushi Masa one. The server, Sunny, is great. She remembers us and always have a great smile and service. Bottomline: there is no gimmick. We are spoiled for sushi in the South Bay. This place is my family's favorite, with a huge menu and a great selection of rolls and fish. The traditional Japanese decor really makes each meal feel special and I appreciate that the restaurant is quiet, in contrast to many others. Went here on a Friday night. Staff was super friendly, the order came out promptly. I ordered the chef's choice omakase which was fresh and beautifully presented. They added a piece of bluefin chotoro compliments of the chef to make it extra special. We also split a few rolls which were delicious as well. I don't drink but they had a large sake and cocktail menu, and everything was priced reasonably. It's always a pleasure to be pleasantly surprised on your first visit to a new sushi restaurant, as we all know sushi can be it or miss. Thankfully we will be coming back again for sure! read more

My party of 3 came to Sushi Masa around 12:30pm on a Thursday since it was close by. There were three other tables at the time, and we were quickly seated and given menus. The atmosphere is super nice, dimly lit with an area with floor seating and a separate area with tables and chairs, with nice decorations throughout. The menu is pretty extensive, so we took a while to look through it before deciding on what to order. The service was excellent and we were frequently checked on and dishes came out quickly. -deluxe chirashi sushi ($35.99): this was just what I wanted, and came with a good selection of sashimi over rice, along with some seaweed salad, shredded radish, a shiso leaf, lemon slice, and miso soup on the side. The fish was super fresh and filling. -cherry blossom ($17.95): this was pretty good but nothing amazing, and the fish had a slightly sticky texture, but the sauce paired really nicely with the roll. -mango bridge ($18.95): this was nice and had sweetness from the mango that was really nice with the salmon. -2 item lunch combo ($17.99): we got shrimp tempura and tonkatsu, and it comes with rice, salad and miso soup. This was a gerat deal and super filling. I was surprised that the salad came with thousand island dressing instead of a soy or sesame salad dressing that I'm more used to. The shrimp tempura was perfectly flight and crispy without being oily. Overall, Sushi Masa had great quality fish in the chirashi, pretty solid rolls and a great value lunch combo. If you're craving sushi, I'd say this is likely the best option in the area! read more

As a self-proclaimed sushi fan, I can confidently say this is some of the best sushi I've had in San Jose in a LONG time. Looking online, the rolls were priced averagely for sushi, at least here in San Jose. As my mom and I walked in, we were greeted immediately by the chef in the sushi bar. The restaurant was absolutely adorable. Traditional decor, and looked akin to like what you would see in Japan. Once we ordered, the wait was pretty short, and once the rolls came out, I was in awe. Sushi Masa is personally my top favorite sushi restaurant in town. We have come here many times since 2020 until present, and were always happy with the service. Our favorite order is always the Trust Chef Sashimi Dinner. All the fresh sashimi is top quality, vibrant colors, and beautifully displayed. Another one that absolutely makes my day is the uni sashimi. 100% satisfaction, of course in my opinion The restaurant is very beautiful, cozy with a warm ambience. The wooden decor, lightings, tables and chairs together help make it look authentic to the Japanese culture. All the plates are very beautiful as well. In addition, I also enjoy that they have various seating areas including bars, and tables. The noice level in the restaurant whenever I get to notice is from low to average, so that is very nice! They also have sake bombs and Japanese beer on tap. I don't really drink alcohol so I had their iced matcha latte. It was also fantastic! The servers are friendly and chefs are super professional! Bathroom is a bit small but lovely and clean! All in all, it's a bit on the pricey end but it is definitely worth my money. I come here once every 2 months or so and always have a pleasant time! Since the sushi place by our house closed, I've been searching for another sushi place. Never thought to return to Sushi Masa that I used to go to on a weekly basis. We went back there several times recently and it was just as good as i remembered The service and the quality of their sushi is excellent, the freshness of the fish & the ambience. The sushi master is wonderful he made us laugh. We always sit at the sushi bar. We order sushi and drink sake and WE always have a wonderful time @ Sushi Masa . Fishy Business Sushi Masa (no relation to Masa Sushi Japan in Mountain View) is a high-end Korean-owned** sushi restaurant that's been in operation in the Avanti Shopping Center for many years (at least 15 that I know of). Six of us arrived for a belated mid-week Mother's Day dinner and had a delicious meal. The Good: *I love the ambiance and décor of this place that's fitted to look like an authentic Japanese sushi joint with wooden walls and accents. The exterior also has a Japanese-themed facade. *Our server was very impressive. She memorized all six of our orders--including substitutions--and they all came out perfectly. *Spicy garlic edamame app was superb! So much great flavor and spice in the chili oil concoction they bathed the edamame in. *Miso soup was also delicious. There is so much flavor and the right balance of salt and that distinctive miso umami flavor. *Some of the freshest and tastiest sashimi I've ever had. It all was sliced neatly and had such great buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture and flavor. The Meh: *Even though the sushi was delicious, you definitely pay good money for it. I'd reckon to say their prices are probably 50% higher than my regular spot in DT Willow Glen (rhymes w/ Yuki Sushi). But, I guess in this case, one gets the quality one pays for. *While tasty, Carissa's Hibachi Chicken meal was like 70% grilled onions and just a few strips of chicken breast. Normally, Carissa wouldn't complain, but for nearly $30, one expects the ratios to be reversed. *As stated earlier, the server was great; however, the organization of their kitchen is a bit disorganized. All the cold food came out first, while the warm dishes had to wait an additional 5-10min to get their food. The Ugly: *18% "service fee" for parties of six or more is one of my pet peeves--I mean, I totally understand why they do it, but I feel like the servers end up getting screwed on the baksheesh. Personally, in this post-Covid world, even mediocre service prompts a 20% minimum--unless service is particularly terrible ofc. TLDR: Fantastic sushi with a great ambiance that comes at a price. Maybe better reserved for special occasions or if one is really trying to impress a date. **I personally don't care that it's Korean-owned, but I know some high falutin' pinkies-out kinda Yelpers won't eat at any Sushi restaurant that isn't Japanese-owned. read more

My son and I came here for a late lunch (~2pm) on Mother's Day and it was pretty wide open. My son isn't into sushi--yet--so he had the Chicken Karaage and Sweet Potato Fries that's served with ketchup. The chicken was made with thigh meat which made it juicy. The fries were lightly salted and freshly fried. I had the Saba Shioyaki lunch special that comes with salad, miso soup, and rice; and also got two hamachi nigiri. I haven't been here in about a year and it was for lunch. It was great. Last night we went for dinner. Everything was fine, no wait, we ordered and waited. Well, when the sushi came out the lady said, "do you want wasabi and ginger?" I immediately looked at the two sushi plates and saw that there was none. She repeated her question again but with some annoyance. I just had Sushi last week and the rolls came with wasabi and ginger. In fact, I have never had a sushi roll delivered to me without it. Furthermore, she never checked on us, never asked how the food was and she never thanked us. I know that if Sunny was there the experience would have been exceptional. My first visit here and I fell in love! Look at the quality of fish in my photo: thick juicy pieces of fish are beautifully presented, so flavorful, buttery and melt in your mouth tender. Spider rolls tend to be very thick but the chef suggested he can roll them smaller so they are easier to eat. What a brilliant idea! Unagi sauce on top was not sticky or too sweet. Just The spicy sauces on side were delicious too. Miso soup and salad that come with the dinner were also high quality. Cold sake was kept cool in an whimsical bucket and our beer was so refreshing, served in cooled glasses. In a rare confluence of events I found myself without my typical dining companions. I took this as a sign that I should either order something insanely spicy, or stuffed myself with sushi. Given my review you can see which I chose. I didn't have much rationale for picking this particular sushi restaurant, there are actually quite a few that deliver to where I live, so this was just based solely on Yelp's rankings. I wasn't really sure what to order here, their menu is quite extensive and includes a variety of non-sushi items. I decided to just order things that I really like, including the omakase, some rolls, and some nigiri that I like. The food arrived quicker than I expected, which was nice. They also included plenty of chopsticks, napkins, and soy sauce packets. For some reason they allow you to purchase extra wasabi, but I don't think this is really necessary. The amount of wasabi and gari that was included as standard is plenty sufficient. I also really appreciated the extremely well thought out way in which they packed all the sushi. The hand rolls were wrapped in paper to avoid getting stuck to anything. The nigiri was all packed nicely in one container so that it wouldn't flop around and fall over, with the Uni even being individually wrapped. They also packaged the free miso soup and the deep-fried heads from the amaebi separate. I had a good time inhaling all this food, strictly speaking I don't think I needed to order the spicy tuna roll which was a bit flavorless, and the rainbow roll was also not really anything special. Everything else was good, of course it's not like some crazy omakase place charging hundreds of dollars but it was good for a more casual sushi spot. Overall I definitely enjoyed my massive meal, I haven't had sushi in so long and this really hit the spot. If you're looking for a more casual type of sushi experience, for instance with kids or without the formality of the high end restaurants I think this would be a great spot. read more

Yassss!! I finally found a winner for my sushi dinner! This was a hit for us. The ambiance and feel was just calm, our waitress was attentive and quick to serve, and the food was oh so delicious. We ordered poke nachos as our appetizer, four rolls to share, Tokyo mule each, and a green tea for me. I'm definitely coming back to this. It was nice to finally be able to dine indoors again. Back to some "normalcy" and being able to socialize again, in-person is way better than togo and in-home dining. Sushi Masa is a childhood favorite restaurant of mine. I've been coming since 2008! I love how quaint it is and it even has tatami style tables where you sit on mats with your shoes off. You can ask to sit at the bar if you want to be up front and personal with the sushi chef. *They are closed on Mondays so keep that in mind! I enjoy coming here because there's never a wait for quality Japanese food. The menu is EXTENSIVE with options for fresh nigiri, omakase, etc. My go-to order is the 3-item bento. There is A LOT OF FOOD. You start with a crisp salad and a hot miso soup. Then you can choose a combination of items. Combination A includes chicken teriyaki, shrimp and vegetable tempura, and a choice between California rolls, avacado rolls, or cucumber rolls for $28.99! Other combinations are a variation between beef teriyaki, lobster and vegetable tempuras, shrimp and vegetable tempuras, all around $28 - $40. You can also substitute tonkatsu, gyoza, sashimi, salmon teriyaki, etc. for additional cost. I also love the sushi "love boat" combo or the Masa Special combo for 2 people for ~$65 depending on the combo choices (chef's choice nigiri, sashimi, classic rolls, vegetable and shrimp tempura, chicken or beef teriyaki, etc). The only thing I would not recommend are the udon/sukiyaki dishes because they are pricey and quite plain. The servers are always kind and accommodating, making it a nice space to enjoy late-night dining. read more
