This is my all time favorite place to go for sushi with the bf. We have been going here for about three years now and it is one of our getaways for alone time with good food and sake. The place is hidden in the far corner of a strip mall with plenty of parkings. The servers are always attentive and friendly and they serve free soup and salads with sushi roll orders, which is a big plus because most places only serve soup or nothing at all. I normally order Kaki Fry (deep fried oysters) for appetizer and the Hong Roll is a must have every time I come here! I've had their Special Spider, Raging Tuna and Crunchy Tammy but nothing compares to the Hong Roll --It's one of my favorite rolls of all time and I have to have it at least once a week! Their combo dinner is alright in price but filling! My bf normally gets the pork katsu and I have tried the teriyaki salmon and loved it! Their pork udon and deep fried green tea ice cream is also to die for! The only negative feedback I have for this place would be the waiting time for our orders on busy nights like Fridays and Saturdays and they close on Sundays =( Other than that, this place is great. Good authentic sushi I've had thus far in area!!! It was great being served by Chef Haru-san. He gave my friends and I a lesson on the Toro and some sushi restaurant secrets. Looks could be deceiving! When I first entered this restaurant, the hole in the wall feel didn't appeal much to me. But this little gem is such a pleasant surprise. Their fish selection is not extensive, mostly standard stuff found everywhere, except anago and aji. However, the lack of selection is made up by quality! We were caution at first and began our dinner with hirame (halibut). We had it in two different styles - one regular sashmi style and the other carpaccio style (mix with olive oil and some herbs). The fish was fresh and both style were delicious in their own ways! After the hirame, we were sold and started ordering many different things: scallop, hamachi, uni, anago, tamago, seaweed salad, and a black cod with mango salsa. Without exception, every single item was very good (yes, including the seaweed salad!) - The scallop was shipped from Japan and almost as good as a live one. - The uni was very flavorful and didn't have any bitter taste. - The tamago was one of the best we ever had. The sushi chef was humorous and a fun person to chat with. Beware that, depending on how many customers the chef is serving, the food could come out a bit slow at times. We originally was only planning to have a quick 1-hour Tuesday night dinner but we ended up spending 2 hours there. But the food was well worth it. We will be back! read more

This is a decent neighborhood sushi place that I go to every now and then. It would have been four stars, but it really bothers me that they often advertise bluefin tuna as a special. Bluefin tuna are so overfished and near collapse that it's almost equivalent to having, say, panda livers on the menu. I don't eat fish, but I feel a bit uneasy about giving my business to a place that thinks it's okay to serve bluefins. (If you care about sustainable sushi, Monterey Bay Aquarium's guide/app Seafood Watch is excellent.) The food itself at Sushi Zono is reliably good, and service is friendly and reasonably fast. I don't think I've ever encountered a waiting list at this place, which makes it a nice weekday night impromptu outing. The vegetarian selection's not bad for a sushi restaurant. I love the age tofu with its crisp shell and grated daikon and ginger, the veggie tempura is crispy and light, as tempura should be. As for rolls, I usually get the veggie delight (a rather unconventional combination of asparagus, avocado, and...cream cheese; a little weird at first, but it's become my favorite) and the veggie tempura rolls. The pan-seared tofu on their dinner menu is also excellent. Prices are pretty moderate for the area; dinner for two usually runs us under $30 and yields leftovers (but again, we're vegetarians who don't eat much). They ask you to pay at the counter when you're done; otherwise you could be waiting a while. read more

This is my all time favorite Japanese place. The atmosphere is wonderful and the wait staff is always friendly. I love the teriyaki, udon, and tempura. They are closed on sunday which is a bummer but the rest of the time, my wife and I always want to go here for our japanese food cravings. One of the wait staff there, Kimi is always especially nice to us and even made us a wedding present!!! that says alot about the place. If you are looking for a nice family run business, please go no further. How many places would do something like this for you??? I usually order beef teriyaki and they always cook it to my medium well specifications. My wife loves the tempura and Kimi even brings her extra tempura crispies to put in her soup. They do have specials from time to time and recently we had the deep fried green tea ice cream. It was delicious!! It was tempura fried with pound cake and ice cream perfectly inside not even melted :) cant go wrong there. Anyways if you live the in area, go and check Sushi Zono out. read more

For my sushi eating needs, I use to go to Totoro off of Saratoga. After two visits here, this is my new place for sushi. The appetizers are really unique and delicious. I would really recommend the yellow fin tuna cheeks ($9, but worth a try!) and the Ahi tuna in the ginger/onion sauce (the fish is rare, but seriously try it because it's delicious!). The sushi is all very delicious and very reasonably priced. What I really liked about this place over Totoro is the large selection of cheaper sushi rolls, which gives you the option to order a few different ones. Totoro rolls, although really good, tended to be way too huge to fit in your mouth and more expensive. You are also given free miso soup and a tiny salad for ordering at least 7 bucks in sushi at sushi zono.. and i love miso soup. :) The people here are all very nice too! I only give this place 4 stars because when this place gets a bit busy the service can be pretty lacking... read more

I used to go to this sushi bar a lot, but in the past few years i have not been, and i am glad that i have not been back. First off i had made a reservation but was late for the and they still held the table which was great. But then the problems began..... It took the server 15 minutes to even come to the table to greet us. Then she finally came and took our drink order, brought the drinks pretty quick and took the order. Ordered all of the food that we wanted at that time because i knew that they were busy. About 10 minutes later the waitress brought out the soup and salad. Then It took 30 minutes after that for us to get our just edamame and teryaki beef which was cold all the way through, not heated at all. Then nothing, and nothing and nothing, after 1 hour of sitting there waiting and watching our waitress pass by us without even asking what we wanted, we flagged her down. We asked for our food to be brought to go because at that point we had been there for almost 2 hours and barely got to eat anything. Then 10 minutes later the waitress brought us our appetizer not in the togo box and 2 sushi rolls in a togo box. I wanted to scream at her. Finally she brings us the check, which i almost fell on the floor from when i saw. They charged us $78 for 2 beers, 2 sodas, 2 sushi rolls, 1 appetizer, edamame, and a tereyaki plate. I really had had it at that point. I used to love the fried green tea ice cream there also and was not able to get it because the service was sooo bad which is really upsetting. I also still left a tip because i didnt want to be rude to the girl even though she wasnt curtious to us. I would give 1 star but the taste of the food is really good, its just that the service and the prices are really horrible. read more

I came here on a weekday at night. the plac was pretty dead inside, but the sushi chefs were still happy and welcome to have us eat. We ordered a bento box that was pretty average and a couple sushi rolls. Nothing really special about this place, but the thing that stood out the most was our waitress. She didn't seem very kind, as if we got to the restaurant too late?! I don't know, but she didn't seem to welcome us like the sushi chefs did. Place was okay, but i dont' think i'll be back. This place used to be my favorite Japanese place when my DH was just my BF and lived in Campbell... This time around, we ordered the poki to start. DH got katsu donburi and I got some sushi deluxe plate which consisted of hamachi rolls and 6 pieces of nigiri sushi (the usual tuna, salmon, hamachi, mackerel, shrimp and snapper). The poki needed more octopus pieces and I thought the sauce was a tad bit too sweet. DH's katsu was slightly overcooked but overall was still as tasty as usual. My dish was alright - nothing stellar but not too bad either. While the food was just alright, it will be the sentimental value of this place that will bring me back. read more

This is probably one of the best sushi houses I've ever been to. The ambiance might not be as great as other places, but that is no way to determine the quality of the food nor the experience. Firstly, I've had Dragon Rolls from a handful of sushi houses, but even if it was a dollar or two more in price than in other areas, it made up for the price difference. It was one of the best rolls I've had, hands down. The Nigiri Sushi was on point! I had a Unagi Nigiri, & it was fresh & one of the more flavorful of its kind I've ever had. I think the best part about my experience is the waitress. My friend who took me here is a regular & had made great relationships with the staff, & she was the nicest (not to mention, cutest) waitress I've ever had. And that alone, I'm speaking for the entire staff--they're generally customer pleasing & for that, stars, stars, stars. read more

Straight-up good sushi. Tried all the funny stuff (i.e. natto, amaebi shrimp, spanish mack, etc.) and was pleasantly surprised, considering the weird location (back corner of a hidden strip mall). Friendly owner/son combo. I had a great time actually. Note: they lay the trays on the top of the sushi bar. That is your signal to take it and eat it. I found wordlessly placing the dish above me to be odd and maybe an unfriendly gesture... but it's just what they do here. They were all sorts of friendly. Super fresh nigiri sushi. We had the Nigiri Deluxe with some eel roll, hamachi and 5 pieces of super high quality fish. Big pieces too, not the typical thin slice you get at other places. I love coming here for their sushi because it is fresh, quality food and conveniently located near my work. Every time I'm here, I always see their regular customers where the staff even know them by their names (just think of the show Cheers). The place itself is small, clean, family own and operates. The ambiance may not be great but their rolls are super good. I always order the Dragon Roll which is my favorite, Rainbow Roll, Spider Roll and their fried Spicy Tuna Roll. For freshness, quality food at affordable price, this place deserves 5 stars. read more

The service here is absolutely atrocious. Once you are seated, you are forgotten about. I've visited here 3 times, twice we got a table and waited about 15-20 min before someone came over. It was a weekday so the restaurant was not busy. The sushi is very good, so the last time I went, we sat at the bar, hoping we would have better service. No such luck. Although our sushi order was taken quickly, we waited 20 minutes for a roll and 15 minutes for the rest of our order. Our soup and drinks arrived after the sushi. I've definitely had better! The place is so hard to find and the outside is not much to look at. The inside isn't much better and there weren't too many workers working. I ended up ordering the combination lunch special with chicken katsu and tempura. All I'm going to say is useless! The chicken katsu's fried batter was so crunchy and hard that it was so difficult to bite a piece of meat off without bringing the whole chicken out of the batter. Don't get me started with the tempura...it tasted as if they didn't use fresh batter or fresh oil to deep fry the tempura. Gross! This place was a total mistake and will not be back. read more

Working @ sushi place, I know is not fun for the servers to have new customers coming when almost closing. I hate it myself also when I am working. However, we came when is 30 min before the restaurant closed, which the service we received wasn't acceptable. The food itself wasn't any special and they have lack of special rolls choices. The server bring out the sallad and miso but no drinks. I didn't complained too se if he would notice it and bring it out. Sadly, when we almost finish the meals he finally check on us and still didn't see something was missing on our tablw. Towards the end when we asked for the check. He clean up our plate w/ out still not notice that we have NO drinks. When we finally got our check, they charged for the sodas that we never ever received. Rather non-descript sushi restaurant in a strip mall in Campbell. Stopped in for lunch today while I waited for my pedicure appointment. Ordered a combination lunch. For 7.99, you pick two items. I picked gyoza and tuna sashimi. Tuna sashimi was $1 more. Gyoza were fresh and tasty, but not the best ever. The tuna sashimi, however, was tender and perfect melt-in-your mouth sweetness. The pieces were not very large, but it seemed about right for a lunch portion. I have a feeling a dinner at the sushi bar would've wowed me a bit more, but lunch was certainly decent. If I was still working across the street I'd probably head back for lunch again. However, for lunch I'd still prefer Chef Ko across the street for fresh and tasty food. read more

I will admit, I am biased since I'm a local and they know me here so, when the sushi takes a while to be done, I really don't care since I'm enjoying myself anyway. But truthfully, their sushi is pretty darn amazing. They have some pretty creative rolls - the Raging Tuna is one of my favorites if you like fried rolls. The Vegas and Alisu rolls are also pretty awesome. The Hamachi Delight is a new roll that I hope sticks around since I LOVE IT. Their prices on their sushi rolls are low... as is the cold premium sake - yum! They can get really busy on Fri / Sat and don't take reservations so try to go early if you can. And while the service can be slow, and the place isn't super nice - the sushi is quality and TASTEY. Definitely my favorite local sushi place to visit on Friday nights. read more

Appetizers; Poki (tuni with seaweed & onion) it was pretty good the seaweed+ Kaki (fried calamari): I was expecting seasoned battered calamari, so I was a little down when I saw the dish. Went there for the first time the other night. Has a loyal following - patrons talked about how long they have been frequenting the restaurant. Many folks have been devoted for more than 20 years. Not particularly impressed by the service or the food. I had reservations and the hostess just pointed inside to indicate that we should seat ourselves. We sat at an empty table but later she said that we actually had a reserved booth a little bit further down. How were we supposed to know that? We sat down, but there were no menus...took a couple more minutes to get the menus. Salad wasn't that special...just lettuce with some shredded carrots and a not-worth-mentioning dressing. I've been coming to Sushi Zono for over 10 years. My friend and I try to have sushi once a month to catch up and have a good meal. I've had almost everything on their menu and I can't complain about anything. My favorite is the Art or Gwen roll. The Alisu roll is delicious too. Their udon always comes out SUPER HOT (temperature) which is good and is so tasty! I love the flavor of the broth. I have only sat at the bar once but hear the owner/sushi chef always chatting up with customers. He seems very open and friendly. read more

This is my first 2 star review. This is why- I think the sushi was very fresh and tasty. Loved it But I think the sushi was way too small!!!!! Any other place I order a lot less and Im full. This place I left hungry. The service was the worst I have ever received in my life. No exageration. I cant even let myself come back to this place. FYI I live very close to Sushi Zono so I would be going out of my way not to eat here. I arrived at 7:15. The place was slow upon my arrival, not many customers were here. I asked for water when I got seated but I waited 45 minuets. They took an order from people who got seated after me. I had to wait in the meaanwhile. Not just a few minuets....But for a very long time. I was served dinner before customers who had arrived before me and ordered before me. I felt sooo bad for them! I got sushi 45 minuets later. When the food arrived, I realized the portions were small so I ordered more food. I waited another 30 minuets, it didnt come so I got up and left. They were obviously short staffed. Customers did begin arriving after my arrival. It is still no excuse. They didnt pay attention to details eigher. they needed to be told to bring plates and wasabi. I can think of so many other places Id rather go! Hopefully they will take this review and make some improvements. read more

I ate here because of the reviews and even their spot in the Mercury News.. BUT for me honestly, it wasn't that great. Granted I was going in with high expectations, the sushi that I ordered (hamachi, amaebi, hotate) were just normal. I would say that their maguro (tuna) was unique because it was spotted tuna. If I could give ZERO stars I would. Years ago this restuarant was like a diamond in the rough. But the last 2 times I went here WERE LITERALLY MY LAST times ever! Servers are friendly and kind bu SLOW, the sushi just had a FISHY odor. Had the bento box and everything was below average. While it's not a horrible place, there are too many good places to try to settle for just okay. Miso Soup - too strong and salty Chicken katsu - didn't look like a great bit of chicken and it was poorly breaded. Tasted bland. Hamachi - it had quite a lot of dark meat, which I don't like, and the skin wasn't completely removed. read more

I've been going to Zono for about four years and highly recommend to sit at the bar as the sushi chefs are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their craft (especially Eibo). My usual order here is the miso-glazed black cod, hamachi kama, ika fry, and whatever sashimi is freshest that day. Sushi Zono is really a can't-miss sushi restaurant. The fish is consistently fresh and of high quality and the service is always friendly. The restaurant is family owned and operated and one usually finds Haru, the owner behind the bar. If you ask him, he'll tell you "all my fish is good" but he'll also point you to the fish that is especially choice on any given day. Friday evenings are usually very crowded but week-day lunches (when I usually go) are not too bad. Tip: pick up a take-out menu on the way to your seat to find the long list of maki specialties available. read more
