We haven't had a bad item on the menu (or off). We especially love the Art Roll and Tataki appetizer. The chefs there are friendly and willing to throw together pretty much anything you ask for. Only downside is that the sushi bar is usually "reserved". Sometimes we're able to squeeze into seats there, but we've been in several times when we were told that and the seats stayed vacant the entire time we ordered and enjoyed our meal. Closed Sunday and Monday so be sure to plan accordingly, but it's a GREAT place with FRESH sushi and fair prices. read more

I've been coming to sushi zono since I was in grade school. It'd always been a staple Japanese spot for me and has yet to ever disappoint me. They food is consistent and the service is friendly. I can also appreciate that they have local sports teams on the tv 24/7. Tonight I went there with my fam and we ordered a bunch of food. Our chicken came out slightly raw so I asked them just to throw it in the microwave. Instead of that they actually threw it back on the grill which was nice. Then on top of that they brought out a complimentary scallop and crab roll with tobiko. It's not like we were even upset or complaining. The owner/manager decided on his own to go above and beyond to make a customer happy... I find this is very rare these days. My experience here at Sushi Zono was awful. The service was bad, it wasnt a packed restaurant, it tooked nearly an hour to get our food, when we finally received our food we still had to wait for my girlfriend's rolls. we decided to get up and leave to just paid for the rolls we have ate. Wow- G-R-E-A-T sushi! My taste buds were surely parading about! The rolls are amazing- definitely 4 star quality! Be aware- the service and ambiance unfortunately are very sub-par; 2 star at most. We waited an hour- yes a full hour- for 4 rolls. When our rolls finally came we immediately ordered 4 more and again- an hour later they arrived. Thank goodness we weren't on a date, we arrived at 7p.m. and left just before 10 p.m. Another gripe I have is that this place seemed to cater a lot towards children- do children even eat sushi?? They had construction paper signs and pictures taped up all over the walls identifying different rolls you could order- very odd. I'm definitely a fan of Sushi Zono. There are two items on the menu that i ALWAYS order: Miso black cod and Ika Fry. Like someone else said it totally is like Crack! It's not like most calamari's and isn't fried in a heavy batter. They must marinate it in some kid of sauce maybe dust it with a little flour and lightly fry it. Just squeeze some lemon and dip in soy sauce and you pretty much have heaven on a plate. I've also come here for my birthday once. We ordered pitchers of beer and my family got the dinner for two or three it came with a TON of food. My Dad shared it with one or two of my cousins and they couldn't finish it. And we're not talking about light eaters here. They're usually the ones that finish off our thanksgiving dinners. So... you know it was a lot of food. read more

Two words. Ika Crack. Ika Crack is actually called "Ika Fry" on their menu, the most amazingly lightly fried calimari I have EVER had. However my friends and I call it "Ika Crack" because it's as addictive and amazing as crack. (I'd imagine.) Great place to grab a bite to eat. But there are certain things that you need to understand. First of all, if you sit at the sushi bar, don't expect to get served until after you finish your miso soup and salad. Secondly, ask always ask whats fresh... they tend have some really good fresh fish, crab/lobster, uni.... We used to come by this place every couple of weeks, when I worked around the corner. I miss their Las Vegas Roll, and deep fried Ice Cream. the staff is friendly, but is mostly family or friends. So service can be a little slow on a busy Friday or Satuday night.... This is hands down my favorite sushi joint. Their roles are really good and super cheap. I have been her several times and have never been disappointed. We ordered 4 roles and the total came to $26... ummm DEAL! What I ordered last time: Sushi Zono roll - My favorite role, no wonder they named the restaurant after it! Teka Maki - good simple standard. Dynamite - good if you like really spicy, it was TOO spicy for my date. Vegas - Flashy and Larger than life! Just like you'd expect. Tuna, hamachi, salmon, green onions, & avocado, lightly fried for $9.50 When you order over $7 in sushi, your meal comes with miso soup (which is really good) and a salad. My one gripe is that they changed the salad dressing... It used to be something I'd crave, now its just some champagne vinaigrette... My first sushi love in the South Bay... nostalgia wants me to give it at least one more star, but I think 3 is about right. The fish here is better than average and the portions are ample. It's the usual stuff (toro, hamachi, sake, etc.), but occasionally they get something unusual. You must order the ika (squid) fry. Zono does it better & differently than almost every other sushi joint - they don't bread and fry the squid, instead they pan fry it. Very, very good, especially the spicy version. Miso cod (black sable or whatever we're calling it now) is also a nice choice. I always opt for the Art Roll (scallops) and a few others are quite good, too. read more

We came here about a month ago. I know this place has been here a long, LONG time but I never came in until then.It deserves its longevity. Really great food. I got the California Roll and the Bagel Roll (? name?- it had smoked salmon and cream cheese). Very fresh - the Bagel Roll had a little bit too much cream cheese on it, but that's just my personal preference. Whenever I get an actual bagel I scrape most of the cream cheese off of it anyways. Hubby got the spider roll and the Saba (macekrel) and the Unagi (eel), which he let me have a bite of, yummy! He got some other roll that I don't remember now. We also got the Ika Fry, which many other people have mentioned. Yes, it was tasty, but I'd probably save room for something else next time. I just went here for dinner and it was great! I tried the beef & chicken terrayki and both were delicious (no funky grissle either, love that!) I also tried the CA, salmon skin, and dynamite roll and all were fab. One of the items in my combo box was gyoza. They weren't too fried, but still tasted good. This place is great. The food is well above average for the price point, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and sake is cheap. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that the walls are covered with handwritten "try our whatever-roll" signs which would detract a bit from the atmosphere if you were on a date or something. But it's perfect for going out in a group. There were 6 of us and we ate till we were stuffed and left half a bottle of sake on the table, for under $30 a person. And to top it off, the waitress offered us homemade chocolate chip cookies that she had made for one of the regular's birthday. I think I need to become a regular here... read more

Haru really knows his stuff. I like to take friends who are visiting from out of town here. The food is always fresh and tastes fantastic. One of my favorites is the Vegas roll. I've never seen it anywhere else and you have to try it if you want something a little different and really delicious. It has tuna, hamachi, salmon, green onion and avocado. The roll is dipped in tempura batter and lightly fried to give the outside a nice little crunch. Fabulous! My wife loves the unagi and has it every time we go. Make sure to have the fried green tea ice cream for dessert. It's unbelievably good. read more

I consider myself something of a sushi snob (for which I have no credentials), and in my opinion Sushi Zono is simply the best sushi restaurant I can find in the South Bay. I think it all starts with the fact that it's a family-owned restaurant: Haru, the owner, has owned the place for 27 years, and has literally hundreds of regulars now who come visit regularly. (Good luck getting a seat at the sushi bar down near him!) His son, Able, works next to him most nights, his daughters can occasionally be seen waiting tables, and his wife is "the boss" and runs the front of the place. Try the Albacore "Tataki" as a starter--combination of sashimi Albacore tuna, onions, and Ponzu sauce. Haru specializes in getting real Japanese ingredients, so wait for the Japanese scallops ("hotate" or "hotategai") or the Japanese "Aji" (mackerel). I'm not a big "roll" person--something of an Americanism, although obviously the Japanese invented them--but the Hong Roll is excellent (named for the gentleman on the end of the sushi bar who produces a prodigious amount of sushi, mostly for the tables). Also, save some room for the Hamachi Kama (yellowtail jaw) or the Japanese Eggroll (salmon, scallion, deep fried, with Ponzu sauce, I think). I am particularly partial to the banana candies up at the register when you pay your check. But if you want a real desert, try the Mochi. read more

Sushi Zono is one of my favorite sushi places. I've been coming here for over 10 years and haven't ever regretted a visit. It's in a small strip mall, you could walk right by it and not even notice. The place is relatively small and the decor/ambience is not the greatest but the food quality is above average and their prices are very reasonable. One of our favorites is the Dinner for Two ($33) which includes miso soup, salad, gyoza, california roll, shrimp and vegetable tempura, beef and chicken teriyaki, rice and green tea ice cream for dessert. We're usually full by the time the teriyaki arrives. The service is very friendly but sometimes a little slow, especially when they get busy. I'll take this any day over Blowfish...at least I can hear myself think. read more

Sushi Zono is one of my favorite sushi place (although I've been going to TGI lately - shhhh!! don't tell :) ) when I first moved out here 4 years ago. A couple of my friends and I will meet here regularly every weekend just to get our sushi fix. The fish was fresh and the prices were pretty reasonable - you definitely get your money's worth. For example, I went with 2 guys (who can eat and drink!!) and I can do my share as well (okay, with eating but not the drinking ;) hehehe) and our bill would come out to about $85 which included 2 pitchers of beer, 2 appetizers, 4 to 5 sushi rows and a bunch of nigiri!! I definitely recommend the black cod, it's delicious but make sure you order it the minute you sit down because it does take a while to cook. And the ika fry (sp?) - which is the spicy squid, it's delicious..but you can also order it non-spicy but what's the point?? :) - I haven't had a roll here that wasn't good...but if you do go here, you'll definitely have to try the Art Roll: Scallop Mix, Avocado, Tuna, Tobiko, & Spicy Sauce - it's one of my favorites!! I came back again last night and this place has a 2/2 for goodness. Here are a few items which stood out to me. Hamachi cheeks - I never knew Hamachi fish were so big. Growing up, my mom always gave me the little fish cheeks and I have learned that it's the most tender part of the fish. Now, having a nice big fish cheek that melts in your mouth is like nirvana. Definitely a must try if you're into smooth goodness. Sauteed Calamari - this is the first place that I've been to which has this. I'm usually ordering the typical fried calamari and have become accustomed to the chewiness of calamari. When you have the first bite of this calamari, you would realize that it's not chewy, but is really soft and tender goodness. Spray some lemon on it and bam! You're good to go. Hong roll - I specifically wanted to try this roll because of other Yelpers. If you like a nice kick to your sushi, I would definitely recommend this. The spicy tuna on top is definitely a notch spicier than normal spicy tuna, and everything tastes fresh. Order this only if you enjoy spicy food. Kirin beer on tap - I'm not much of a beer drinker anymore, but my bf loves it. And I heard Kirin is rare on tap. The best way to describe it is there is semi-sweetness to it (not like the bitter Sapporo, yuck!). read more

Excellent sushi at reasonable prices. Instead of putting the regular imitation crab into the Rainbow rolls these guys put some sort of minced scallop mixture. Right on! This alone is worth coming back for. The service was attentive and caring. There was a loud crowd there the night we came and the waitress specifically seated us as far away as she could realizing ahead of time that the noise would be annoying. I see a lot of great sushi bars here not being appreciated enough with comments like "the roll we ordered was nothing special..." etc etc. But if you wanted rolls don't even bother. Those fancy, creative, extravagant rolls aren't even real Japanese food. Not that rolls are bad; I appreciate some from time to time but I wouldn't call them Japanese food. With that finally off my chest, I'll get started with the review of my experience. I came to Sushi Zono for the first time because it was recommended to me by a friend who knows her Japanese restaurants very well. She reserved the bar seats for dinner time. We ordered nigiris on demand (for lack of a better word). We would order one or two and the sushi are made in front of us by the chefs and we'd order more along the way. This to me is the ultimate way to have a nigiri experience. I was so satified with both the food and experience. The fish (and seafood) are so fresh and the preparation is on point. The chefs talk to the customers who sit at the bar and the customers therefore get to be more engaged. Chefs also make personal recommendations and I feel like they customize the orders or the way to prepare the food based. Overall, the ingrediants are fresh, execution is great, chefs are friendly, envrionment is fun and laid back, the bill is honestly relatively small for the food and experience I received. I've been going here for approximately 2 years and I think the quality of the sushi/sashi has dwindled. It doesn't seem like they use the same quality of fish as in the past. Always order what is indicated as the special "fresh" fish (sushi/sashimi). One day they had ikura that was the indicated as fresh. My friend who used to own a sushi bar said that stuff is never really "fresh". I ordered it and my friend was totally surprised and said he's never tasted ikura that good before. But... we also order hamachi and it wasn't the freshest... We ordered toro, but it was more like chu-toro. Not cool since they were charging toro prices. The non sushi food is just ok. The best item they have is the tempura fried ice cream. They wrap a ball of green tea ice cream with pound cake then dip it in tempura batter and it's fried! Oh yum!!! Sometimes I just go there just to order the tempura ice cream. It gets real warm there in the summer time. I don't think they use the A/C only the ceiling fans. read more

If you like good sushi with a neighborhood atmosphere, this is the place to go. Service can be up and down (often your greeted and seated right away, but we have had to stand and wait with no acknowledgement) but the food makes up for it. The Ika Fry is one of their best appetizers and the Hamachi Kama (cheek) is a favorite of ours. The Sushi Bar is always busy when we're there so the chef must do a good job of entertaining and serving the sushi. read more

My top secret best sushi joint in town. I mostly eat vegan and am really picky about fish quality. This place has the freshest fish in San Jose with fun expert sushi chefs. Sometimes people at the bar can be kind of loud but if you're looking for the highest quality freshest and most tasty sushi then this is the place to go. Fresh sushi and welcoming wait-staff. I only gave it 3 stars however because it wasn't wow.... I wasn't utterly amazed.I will say the food was fresh and the water glasses were always taken care of. I had the hot sake which was good they didn't have a large selection but I'm not a connoisseur and it was just fine. I also ordered the fresh sake (salmon) because that is how I define a place's freshness. It was fabulous and they didn't skimp on the fish portion. We tried a few of there rolls but I think they are comparable to most places.I think the rolls at TGISushi are a little tastier and creative. However it's bigger than their restaurant. So its a nicer establishment to enjoy a conversation and eat with a little more space around you. I like this place for dinner, not so for lunch. The servers don't seem interested in my money... Stopped in for lunch one day, I tried this place for dinner it was good pricey but good. When you walk in during the lunch crush..hahahha...no one is around I saw one server who looked at me like I was from MARS, two sushi dudes behind the counter looking down at there knives. Really poor service, they know its a lunch crowd so not alot of BIG tips. But heck I am coming in to eat at your business at least treat me like a tourist! This is my all time favorite place to go for sushi with the bf. We have been going here for about three years now and it is one of our getaways for alone time with good food and sake. The place is hidden in the far corner of a strip mall with plenty of parkings. The servers are always attentive and friendly and they serve free soup and salads with sushi roll orders, which is a big plus because most places only serve soup or nothing at all. I normally order Kaki Fry (deep fried oysters) for appetizer and the Hong Roll is a must have every time I come here! I've had their Special Spider, Raging Tuna and Crunchy Tammy but nothing compares to the Hong Roll --It's one of my favorite rolls of all time and I have to have it at least once a week! Their combo dinner is alright in price but filling! My bf normally gets the pork katsu and I have tried the teriyaki salmon and loved it! Their pork udon and deep fried green tea ice cream is also to die for! The only negative feedback I have for this place would be the waiting time for our orders on busy nights like Fridays and Saturdays and they close on Sundays =( Other than that, this place is great. Good authentic sushi I've had thus far in area!!! It was great being served by Chef Haru-san. He gave my friends and I a lesson on the Toro and some sushi restaurant secrets. Looks could be deceiving! When I first entered this restaurant, the hole in the wall feel didn't appeal much to me. But this little gem is such a pleasant surprise. Their fish selection is not extensive, mostly standard stuff found everywhere, except anago and aji. However, the lack of selection is made up by quality! We were caution at first and began our dinner with hirame (halibut). We had it in two different styles - one regular sashmi style and the other carpaccio style (mix with olive oil and some herbs). The fish was fresh and both style were delicious in their own ways! After the hirame, we were sold and started ordering many different things: scallop, hamachi, uni, anago, tamago, seaweed salad, and a black cod with mango salsa. Without exception, every single item was very good (yes, including the seaweed salad!) - The scallop was shipped from Japan and almost as good as a live one. - The uni was very flavorful and didn't have any bitter taste. - The tamago was one of the best we ever had. The sushi chef was humorous and a fun person to chat with. Beware that, depending on how many customers the chef is serving, the food could come out a bit slow at times. We originally was only planning to have a quick 1-hour Tuesday night dinner but we ended up spending 2 hours there. But the food was well worth it. We will be back! read more

This is a decent neighborhood sushi place that I go to every now and then. It would have been four stars, but it really bothers me that they often advertise bluefin tuna as a special. Bluefin tuna are so overfished and near collapse that it's almost equivalent to having, say, panda livers on the menu. I don't eat fish, but I feel a bit uneasy about giving my business to a place that thinks it's okay to serve bluefins. (If you care about sustainable sushi, Monterey Bay Aquarium's guide/app Seafood Watch is excellent.) The food itself at Sushi Zono is reliably good, and service is friendly and reasonably fast. I don't think I've ever encountered a waiting list at this place, which makes it a nice weekday night impromptu outing. The vegetarian selection's not bad for a sushi restaurant. I love the age tofu with its crisp shell and grated daikon and ginger, the veggie tempura is crispy and light, as tempura should be. As for rolls, I usually get the veggie delight (a rather unconventional combination of asparagus, avocado, and...cream cheese; a little weird at first, but it's become my favorite) and the veggie tempura rolls. The pan-seared tofu on their dinner menu is also excellent. Prices are pretty moderate for the area; dinner for two usually runs us under $30 and yields leftovers (but again, we're vegetarians who don't eat much). They ask you to pay at the counter when you're done; otherwise you could be waiting a while. read more

This is my all time favorite Japanese place. The atmosphere is wonderful and the wait staff is always friendly. I love the teriyaki, udon, and tempura. They are closed on sunday which is a bummer but the rest of the time, my wife and I always want to go here for our japanese food cravings. One of the wait staff there, Kimi is always especially nice to us and even made us a wedding present!!! that says alot about the place. If you are looking for a nice family run business, please go no further. How many places would do something like this for you??? I usually order beef teriyaki and they always cook it to my medium well specifications. My wife loves the tempura and Kimi even brings her extra tempura crispies to put in her soup. They do have specials from time to time and recently we had the deep fried green tea ice cream. It was delicious!! For my sushi eating needs, I use to go to Totoro off of Saratoga. After two visits here, this is my new place for sushi. The appetizers are really unique and delicious. I would really recommend the yellow fin tuna cheeks ($9, but worth a try!) and the Ahi tuna in the ginger/onion sauce (the fish is rare, but seriously try it because it's delicious!). The sushi is all very delicious and very reasonably priced. What I really liked about this place over Totoro is the large selection of cheaper sushi rolls, which gives you the option to order a few different ones. Totoro rolls, although really good, tended to be way too huge to fit in your mouth and more expensive. You are also given free miso soup and a tiny salad for ordering at least 7 bucks in sushi at sushi zono.. and i love miso soup. :) The people here are all very nice too! I only give this place 4 stars because when this place gets a bit busy the service can be pretty lacking... read more
