No big deal, but I was a tad disappointed and surprised that we wouldn't be allowed to order À la carte. Up to this point, I haven't asked pricing for the AYCE, as I was prepared for $35.99-$45.99 per person, like most other AYCE sushi restaurants. At this restaurant, you order using your cell phone after scanning the QR code on a paper taped to each table. I scanned the QR code, and the full menu, including pictures, was displayed. I prefer ordering from any business by speaking to a live person; however, I have accepted that more and more businesses are switching to this option and/or kiosks for placing orders. We ordered five to six rolls in total and a few other items from the full menu on display. The wait time was approximately 33 minutes for our order to be delivered to our table. This was acceptable and understandable, as this is a large and extremely popular restaurant, as shown by how many guests were seated at nearly every one of the twenty+ tables and the steady stream of customers checking in and waiting for a table. As our food arrived, it looked appealing, and all the rolls we ordered were placed on one wooden tray. Our rolls were absolutely DELICIOUS!! Fresh and perfectly prepared. I truly could not believe how tasty each roll was, as each piece I had was full of flavor We made it to round two of three before we had to call it quits because we were stuffed and extremely happy with our lunch. When it came time to pay, I was extremely happy and surprised to learn that our AYCE sushi was only $29.99 per person, which is an unbelievable price. I might add that service here was AMAZING!! Between our waitress and a waiter who was also helping, they checked on us nine times. They were both attentive, super friendly, and hardworking. First off, the rice...the BASE of this Asian dish, should never ever be long grain rice, but it was. The rice was flaky and did NOT pair well with the rest of the ingredients. In Asian dishes, rice needs to be medium (or even short) grain, so the rice sticks together, and you can pick up an entire "clump" of rice easily with chopsticks. Don't know if this was a permanent change, or if someone just got the wrong rice, but it really changed the dish, and not in a good way. Secondly, instead of a lightly fried egg that was still slightly runny, it was hard. Like, cooked all the way through hard. And I know it wasn't due to residual heat from the other ingredients, because it was very rubbery, the way overcooked eggs can get. I do hope this was just a one-time thing, and these are not permanent recipe updates, so I will give it another try and decide from there if I will continue to be a customer.

The food is generally decent, but I don't go so much for the food, as I like the concept of a dinner and show for our celebration. So when my youngest had his 8th grade promotion, I found Shogun in La Verne that I made reservations for. I've been to the Pasadena location several times in the past so I am confident with their food and service. The La Verne location is in a big shopping plaza with plenty of parking. We arrived and were seated immediately. I guess our reservation time at 6:00 pm was early enough to avoid the crowds since there was hardly anyone there yet. FYI, there's a happy hour from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Our server was great, he got us everything we needed and stopped by frequently to check on us. We each ordered a combo, and was so excited to see the "show". I don't know if our chef was new or what, but he was so soft spoken and not very enthusiastic about what he was doing. I couldn't hear anything he was saying and even the train whistle that he blew was so quiet. I clapped and cheered in the beginning to get him going, but he wasn't really engaging, so I was really disappointed. It was so boring. To top that off, our "yakisoba" that came with our meal was linguini noodles. Seriously? Can you get any less authentic? If Panda Express can get Chow Mein noodles in Alaska, you can get yakisoba noodles in SoCal.
