My husband and I have been going to Sutter's Mill since they were in the San Fernando Valley and for the many years in Simi Valley. We especially enjoy the prime rib and the and love all the employees that work there especially Lydia the restaurant manager. She is one of the reasons we love going there. She always remembers us and picks up conversations from where we left off. I never like to bandwagon, and I like to form my own opinions. So when I saw the restaurant was catching a lot of flak, I came to find out for myself how it was. The food is overpriced and overcooked. We were another group of people whose food came out warm at best. The ambience is not worth the experience, and the staff seemed very disconnected from the guests. Called on Wednesday to reserve a prime rib dinner for 4 for Mother's Day. The person who answered the phone told me that they were not taking reservations and to call on Sunday between 1 and 7. I asked if they had enough prime rib because of limitations of meat. She told me that there suppliers had plenty. I then called on Friday just to confirm that they were not taking reservations. I was informed the same answer as on Wednesday. Sunday I called at 1:25pm (25 minutes after they opened) to place my order. Guess what, they were out of prime rib!!!! That ruined our Mother's Day! You would think a restaurant would take orders in advance on a Holiday week so they can order enough as not to run out! I asked to talk to the Manager who basically told me nothing new. I called to make a reservation for four; it was explained they are currently only taking reservations for 10 or more. I explained I had a 92 year and this is her favor restaurant. The person at the restaurant explained that they did not want to disappoint customers if they couldn't accommodate them when they arrived. She explained that if a worker appears to be sick they are sent home and thus restaurant has been short staffed at times. I totally understood and respected restaurant for that. We changed our arrival time and were able to get seated and service was excellent as it usually is. Food was good. I appreciated that they appear to be concerned about safety of their customers. Guys, you're missing out if you have not visited Sutters yet. Lobster tail is the best I have ever had. To the point that I rarely will order it anywhere else. And when I do, it is never as good as Sutters. Their Mac N Cheese is also very good. Home made salad dressings, and French Onion Soup are on point. NO CORKAGE FEE - the cherry on top. I thought I was going to be a repeat patron. I had their filet mignon with clam chowder soup and onion rings. The soup was great, and the onion rings were plenty and delicious. The filet was cooked just the way I wanted it, medium rare, and it was delicious. Easily 4 stars only because I've had better filets, but the cooking is nothing to complain about. If you want a good steak, this place is great. I am giving 1 star because I forgot my credit card at the restaurant. I've never forgotten about my credit card before and this was a first. The restaurant is pretty dark inside, and I guess I did not see that it was still in the little folder for the bill. But the dark ambiance is not the problem. I did not realize I was missing my credit card until my bank began sending me alerts of suspicious and repeat charges. There are thieves at this place. Who knows what the employees are doing to credit cards when you pay the bill, let alone forget your card at the restaurant. If you love this place, I suggest you bring cash. read more

On Saturday night, January 21, 2023, I took my daughter and my grown grandchildren to Sutter's Mill for a special Birthday steak dinner. I would love to give it a great rating, well the waitressd was very good, but the food, well here it was: Three filet mignons, only two were "okay", the other one requested to be medium well, was like a hockey puck; inedible. The green beans said to have been sauteed, were boiled; my family did not eat them. The mac and cheese, overcooked and I didn't taste any cheese. The only thing that was good was the stuffed baked potatoe and dessert (cheesecake obviously made elsewhere) and ice cream. This restaurant has been in Simi Valley for a long time so I figured it would be great; sooooo disappointed. They obviously need a new chef. I am very sad to have given this bad review, but that's what yelp is all about, isn't it? read more

Personally, I found this place repulsive. It has a old western decor that fits the place. The service was relatively good but the food is atrocious: I ordered the chicken breast ($18). It comes with soup or salad and these are the only side choices: Baked potato, green beans, Mac n cheese and French fries. I got the clam chowder which had zero flavor. The chicken breast was well cooked, but bland... editable until a bit down on a hard piece of bone or cartilage. The fries were from a freezer bag and also zero seasoning or flavor. Another member got the green beans which has that deep green way over cooked mush look. My guess is that everything comes out of a freezer here. Flavorless over priced food. read more

My boyfriend and I had gone to Sutter's Mill for the first time on 1/13/2020. A few friends had been there prior and said it was really good so we thought we would try it. I love to cook & both of us are Foodies who enjoy really fresh, flavorful, & well prepared food, which we were looking forward to. The restaurant didn't have many tables filled at all & the decor was very outdated. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms appetizer, plus we each ordered the Rib Eye with a fully loaded potato, and a side of green beans. Although the stuffed mushrooms looked good, they tasted disgusting! They were definitely not freshly prepared, but most likely frozen & microwaved. You could taste the melted freezer burn liquid in the bite. The Rib Eyes were so tough & flavorless. Most likely they were frozen, not fresh, & thawed in the microwave first before they were put on a grill to give them the grill marks. I have actually had a much better Rib Eye at Sizzler's that was tender, juicy, full of flavor, cooked perfectly, & a lot less money! The loaded potato was actually a twice-baked potato, which did not state that on the menu. It was also not freshly prepared and most likely frozen as well. And don't even get me started on the green beans... which you guessed.... were also previously frozen! I actually thought they were poured from a can, but a server corrected me & said they were frozen. Plenty of our meal was not eaten. To top it off, at some point our initial server left the restaurant during our meal, but did not bother to let us know she was leaving. We had no service for quite some time until we finally saw another server in our area & requested someone to help us. We asked to speak with the manager & explained our dissatisfaction with the entire meal. She saw the food still sitting on our plates. We told her we were not happy that we had to pay for this awful meal at all. She apologized & said all she could do is offer us a free dessert. She said the Peach Cobbler was amazing so we accepted her offer. It was one small bowl of Peach Cobbler, that was most likely frozen & warmed in the microwave (of course!), with a dollup of vanilla ice cream on top. We were so disappointed in the entire meal, the over-priced cost of the meal, & could not understand what people actually liked about this place or the food. There are so many restaurants with delicious FRESH food in Simi Valley & surrounding areas. We will definitely not be back to this place!! I feel sick just writing about it, but thought others should be aware! read more

Took my family to Sutter's Mill to celebrate our anniversary. Staerted with bacon wrapped shrimp and crap stuffed mushrooms. Yummy Everyone had a different main course. My family has been coming to Sutters Mill for close to 20 years but for some reason we've never left a review. The food and experience at Sutters has always been top notch. Our particular favorite is the prime rib which we even prefer to Lawry's prime rib. Our son prefers the salmon and it's always been good. Salad dressings are home made and the blue cheese is the best! Like many restaurants, I think they might have had a difficult time when first opening after covid but our most recent experiences have been as good as ever. The menu has been scaled back since covid but the food is still excellent and hopefully one day they will open for lunch again and some of our favorite desserts will come back. read more

It's been 10+ years since my last visit and todays visit confirmed why. The place looks nice inside , clean, they have friendly hostesses. But the service was marginal at best. The clam chowder was a little thicker than I prefer but it was good, seasoned perfectly, excellent tasting clams, potatoes. The filets were over cooked, so if you prefer medium I would go medium rare and so on. The asparagus was cooked perfect with the right amount of pepper and garlic. The zucchini was way over salted, the mac and cheese was barely a step above Kraft's. A plus is their no corkage fee, so bring your favorite bottle of wine. Simi doesn't have a lot to choose from but the locals seemed to like this place. It will be awhile if I go back. read more

My family came for the first time on Christmas Eve. I placed reservations online with no trouble. The staff was awesome. The food was hot and very tasty. I had the Sutter's Signature Steak with twice baked potato. One had ribery and another had the Sutter's Dip. The kids had chicken. All loved the food. We will definitely be coming back. read more

4.5 stars. Great value for feeding hungry families (kids eat deee). Service is fast and friendly and food portions are very large. All the reasons why 4.5 stars. Steaks are delicious and well prepared. Seasoning is spot on. Servings are large and if you are on a diet be sure to share one steak and order several sides. Desserts are good but not that good. First time here, first impression was it is clean and fun western themed. We went for a quiet Sunday dinner, and the food was pretty good, but we were seated in a booth adjacent to shrieking baby in a high chair. Parents and grand parents did nothing to quiet the child, except play nursery songs on their cell phone. Ruined the experience for us....we won't be back. read more
