My brother and I went for a steak. We sat in the bar area to watch the football game and ordered a prime rib and ribeye steak dinner. The salad was cold and fresh and the Blue cheese was good. The steaks were perfect but the bake potatoes were small. Service was fast even though they seemed busy. Well, after starting to enjoy Sutters Mill in the 70's on Sepulveda Blvd in Mission Hills this will be our last time. Went there to celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary. I have always liked the ambiance, but the food and service has really gone down. Since the Covid lockdowns the menu is lots smaller, and no salad or soup included in the meal. They are available at extra cost though. I ordered the Rib Eye steak to be chard rare which they cannot do, although my wife's Baby Back Pork Ribs were way beyond chard on the ends, but still pink in the middle. There was very little actual Pork and mostly fat. They advertise as a "Steak House" and can't cook a steak chard rare? My Rib Eye was about one third fat and gristle. They were ok. Then got Maine lobster & Alaskan king crab legs. Lobster was cooked just right. Wasn't tough & chewy. Crab legs were soft & juicy. Didn't require any work to get the meat out. The stuffed baked potato was delicious! Sauté zucchini was alittle bland. Then fried cheesecake was bomb! With crunchy outside & creamy inside. It came with ice cream & whip cream. Every time I decide to take my family to Sutters Mill, I always regret it. I get myself excited for a good prime rib and I am always let down. My wife had the filet mignon and it's over cooked and tastes like top sirloin. These cooks and owner need figure out the real way to serve a prime rib. The main reason I rate this as a 1 star is at the end of my post. Waitress botched up our drink orders. Table was not cleared of empty appetizer plates. Waitress could not remember who ordered what when placing our entrees on the table. Crab stuffed mushrooms very bland. Prime rib - average. Not worth $30+ (I'd rather pay more for an excellent prime rib). No bread served. I ate about 1/3 of my baked potato. I asked for a container to take it home (I love leftover baked potato). I placed the potato in the styrofoam container. When I closed the lid, the potato somehow flew out of the container and onto the carpet aisle. (Perhaps the table was too full of uncleared dishes?) I watched as new customers came in trying to avoid the potato mess on the carpet. Dessert was served. Afterwards, I was presented with a basket with something wrapped in a cloth napkin... Ta da! Drumroll! I opened the napkin to find my old fallen-on-the floor baked potato presented to me. Old butter and chives and all! I told the waitress that I really do NOT want this potato after it's been on the floor! Not only does this display a complete lack of common sense - IT IS ALSO A HEALTH DEPARTMENT VIOLATION!!! If my Mom & Pop opened a steakhouse, I imagine Sutter's Mill is just what it would look like. It definitely doesn't look like a big chain restaurant and that's what makes it cool. We were dressed super casual and no one batted an eye. Love that! Every piece of food we put in our mouths was followed by - "Yum. Oh. This is so good. Man. Wow." Yep, it's that good. We asked about the sauces and were told that the owner makes every sauce, dip, salad dressing... from scratch every day. Talk about attention to detail! You can taste the difference. The clam chowder - made fresh daily on premises, of course - was the best clam chowder I've ever had. Thick, rich and I'm sure it went straight to my thighs. For dinner I had the Shrimp Scampi with a plain baked potato and Honey had some hunk o'meat with the Peppercorn Bernaise sauce and grilled onions and a Twice-Baked Stuffed Baked Potato. I should have gone with the twice-baked because I couldn't keep my fork away from his. The shrimp was butterflied and covered with garlic, capers, butter and sauteed mushrooms. Oh man! Talk about good stuff! Honey's steak was perfect and he ate every bite. Even though we both kept saying we were full, we couldn't stop! We also ordered a side of the garlic Texas Toast too. Oh yeah. Pricewise, we spent less here then we spent at CPK! They don't have a corkage fee so bringing your own beverage is free. Our evening came to $50. I'll begin with the positive: The atmosphere was quiet and welcoming. The staff was quick and attendant. The establishment was clean and smelled inviting. The prices were typical of a mid-scale dining establishment. Dinner for two with one house wine and one coffee was $74 before the tip. My wife's grilled salmon was good. Not excellent, but good and something she would order again. Her baked potato was also satisfactory. We both chose salad, she with Italian dressing, me with Blue Cheese. Her dressing was just good. My Blue Cheese was also "just good". It tasted house made with some hint of mayo. For my taste, it wasn't sharp enough and lacked the aromatic pungence of a good blue cheese. Still, it was adequare. The salad was nothing to brag about. Iceberg lettuce chopped up in small pieces, diced totatoes, cucumber slices...nothing noteable. It seemed slightly browned on some of the lettuce and it was not a particulally generous portion. Still, it was acceptable since, I didn't come to eat salad. Now, on to the not so good. I'll begin with the vegetable sides. They were string beans. I found them tough, bland and watery. I couldn't tell if they were fresh or frozen though if they were fresh, they were not of high quality. I ordered a side of garlic toast. $4.00. I'm not sure, but I think it consisted of either 6 or 8 full slices of sourdough. We didn't finish it and it was not good enough to box and take home. It was not toasted or at least, not enough to give it even a hint of crunch. The butter on the "toast" was not fully melted and the garlic flavor was not especially prounced. It was warm sourdough bread with partially melted garlic butter. I would not order it again. Compared with the garlic bread at the Smokehouse in Burbank, this was pretty pedestrian fare. I ordered an 8oz rib eye medium rare. It arrived only slightly warm. It was a dull grey in appearance with grill marks coveringing about 2/3 of its surface. There was zero chared fat and zero evidence of marbeling. The steak as plated, was about 5/8" thick. When cut open, it ranged from rare to medium rare with it mostly on the rare side. As I said, it was not hot, only luke warm. It was suitably tender and grissle free. It was of average taste. I would not order it again. Over all, on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is terrible and 10 is "to die for" I'd give this a 4 or 5. If you are hoping for a Ruth's Chris quality steak, you will need to keep looking. This was more of a Sizzler-type steak. Not bad, but not worth the price. read more

Took my mother out to dinner for Mother's Day. Thought we would go have a good steak...but that was not the experience we had. Ordered 2 steak and lobster dinners and the Sutter's Cut. 1 well, 1 med rare, 1 mostly rare. Received: 3 well steaks, no lobsters, and cold peppercorn sauce, and no mushrooms as requested with the one that was correct. So we sent back 2 dinners and wait while my mom eats alone. Asked if we wanted drinks while we wait...so comped 2 drinks while we wait. Would not have ordered them otherwise. Next we recieved 2 rare steaks, finally recieved lobsters, refrigerator cold asparagus, and one plate had a partially cooked potato... Returned one plate and just did not reorder. So my husband went hungry. I ate the lobster (which was Ok) ate 2 bites of the too rare steak and gave up. Left 2/3 or more of the "comped" drinks which the manager seemed to think made up for 2 hours and $118 for 2 people not able to eat most or any of the food served. "No", we do not want to chance dessert. At $30-$50 a plate I expect a little more than cold under cooked food and the delivery of the food to be in a reasonable succession. ..I could have gone to denny's and had better management of the food delivered. A nice night out was basically ruined and my dogs are going to have a very expensive rare steak for dinner. I honestly can't remember why my BF and I decided on this place exactly. We finally found it in the back of a small L-shaped mall, with its signage obscured by another building, thanks to "the dot". That would be the Google Maps dot. Follow the dot, it never lies. Not. It lied to us on a regular basis when we were in Hawaii. But that's another story. The other yelpers are right. It is dark and trying to be romantic. It reminded me of some of the romantic restaurants we ran into in downtown Chicago. We came here for dinner and were seated in an elevated area. On one end were a couple of steps, at the other was a ramp. The booths are kind of "C" shaped, upholstered in tufted tuck 'n roll. We nestled into the back of the booth and gazed out into the remainder of the restaurant. My gaze fixed on the bar, which had a beautiful selection of high-end gins... Gins like Bombay Sapphire, "Tank 10", and Hendricks. If my stomach hadn't been punishing me, I would have ordered a James Bond martini. My mouth waters just thinking about it. But I digress. Obviously their liquor buyer has it going on. So why, pray-tell, were there not people sitting at the bar? Maybe because it was a weeknight? Whatever the excuse, it's lame. They REALLY need to get serious about making some coinage off that lovely, well stocked bar. If the problem is lack of a good bartender, they need to contact me and I'll hook them up with my son, who rocks. Either way, they need to get that bar hopping. My gaze worked its way more towards the interior of the restaurant. Then I saw it. You know, IT. IT is the thing you can't stop looking at. IT is the thing that drives you to distraction. That is, if you're slightly OCD, like me. IT was crooked cafe curtains. Yes, little rods with short curtains, attempting to make the place look quaint. Hello? Knock-knock Sutter's Mill management: Have you ever heard of a Carpenter's LEVEL??? Or, if your building isn't level, have you ever heard of MEASURING to ensure that the gap between the hem of the curtain and the booth partition is the same on the right and left? God I don't know if I can get that out of my mind enough to go back. Seriously. OK so let's for a moment pretend that all yelpers aren't like me. They can deal with crooked curtains and maybe even screaming kids. Moving on... Michelle W. is so right about the French Onion soup. It's some of the best I've ever had. And I've had it at that French restaurant in Hotel Bellagio in Vegas, which is supposed to be the godliest of godly. Nope, good old Sutter's Mill in Podunk Simi has outdone them. They say the beef is aged. It is. To perfection. Gary and I both got the prime rib. Excellent. Perfectly roasted. Tender. Juicy. I can't buy beef that good and I shop at some pretty high end places, like Costco :-) T'won't be the same. We ordered wine by the glass, so that we could have white wine with our salads and red wine with our meat. They had a special wine close-out list. We ordered discounted wines from that, and they were great. Once again, kudos to their liquor buyer. Dude, their buying prowess in general. Great beef, great booze. Obviously the same buyer didn't do the interior decorating or he / she would have bought class. The service was cheerful and not at all snooty. Our drinks came out promptly and I recall never wishing for anything to come faster or slower. The only "problem" was that we couldn't finish our meals. Awe, poor us having to endure generous portions. We ordered baked potatoes with our meals and ended up taking them home and dressing them up for lunch the following week. Even the potatoes were very high quality -- once again, I just can't buy that fresh, nuttiness around town, to serve at home. Sigh. Want quality in a relaxed, romantic atmosphere? Sutter's Mill is a good, local choice with beef quality just as good as Morton's, Ruth's, or Lawry's for half the price. Just don't look at the drapes. read more

After catching an early movie my wife and I had the opportunity to FINALLY try Sutter's Mill last night. Wow, this is a new favorite place for me! We have lived in Simi Valley for over 13 years and I had heard good things about Sutter's Mill, but we had never taken the time to go and check it out. Don't be spooked off by the plain exterior. When you step inside you will go back in time to the days of the old school steakhouse providing a quality dining experience with outstanding cocktails and delicious steaks. We started of with a couple of cocktails (nice to have a full bar and a bartender that knows how to make a drink), then enjoyed lobster-stuffed mushrooms, "traditional" dinner salads (best Ranch dressing I've had in years!) and a couple of perfectly cooked steaks along with their stuffed bake potatoes. The portions were great and even though I was full, I managed to enjoy a few bites (okay, I ate the whole thing!) of their cherry cobbler as well. Yum, yum, yum! I learned that Sutter's Mill has been at it for over 50 years and I hope they'll continue for another 50...I just found them and want to enjoy more dining experiences like the one I had last night. read more

We went out for my mother in laws birthday and she had suggested this place. She informed me that it was nothing fancy, but the food was good, so, I made a reservation. When I called, I told them it was for a birthday and they wrote her name down (I really liked that). When we got there, they gave her a card with her name on it and a free dessert. Lovely touch! The service was totally fine, we were not ignored or over waited on. The food was pretty good. I would not suggest drinking the water, unless you like gross tap water. My husband and I split one of the meals and they were nice enough to split the plate (totally unexpected). Prices were high..unless they repair the rip in booth vinyl..- make the a la carte dinner salad worth $7.50. I felt Wendy's salad's were nicer for less..the blue cheese is the same as before & yummo. I loved the garlic toast.. it was priced very fair. The prices r somewhat high however I did not have steak. Also felt the soup bowl was little small..they do split at no additional charge. Service is very good. LUNCH MENU IS A GREAT VALUE! Served until 4:00 too. For $11, I had an 8 oz salmon filet with a mild garlic butter caper sauce. The salmon was perfectly moist and not over cooked. They serve a teriyaki sauce as another option if you're not into garlic. Comes with fries and thick grilled toast with a light garlic butter (which I'm sure you can get with plain butter if you prefer). Several chicken and beef options too. Check it out! If you opt for the regular dinner menu but dine early (before 5:30 or 6:00, I think), you get 20% off your selection. Full bar. Free parking. OK, I don't know why my previous review got flagged, but I suspect it was from a competitor trying to slam this restaurant. I'm not looking for a freebie, and I'm not friends with the owner, but I do like their food. The prices are very good for what you get, especially lunch. I've taken several friends and business associate there for lunch and they all liked it. So what gives? Seems like when a business offers a good value the competition can't compete, so they put all their cronies up to a sabotage mission. So, what do you want me to do? The food is great, the prices are competitive. Dinner is a bit more pricey, but still reasonable for a good steak house in my opinion The ambiance is elegant, comfortable booths, soft lighting, everything you might expect from a fine dining establishment. And, it has a well stocked bar with a wide screen TV for sports or whatever else you want to watch. All the top shelf beverage as well as well and a good wine list. Found this gem of a restaurant via Yelp, taking relatives to get some steak... The interior of the restaurant was beautiful and warm, with cozy booths, each with a different little lamp on each table. The restaurant was as cozy as a good friend's well appointed and tastefully decorated living room... I needed to have a more quiet booth where I could have a nice but more private conversation and the staff were quick to accommodate. The staff where exceptional at catering to our needs, and deserve high praise! The food was delicious. I had the steak and seared Scallops, and I was moaning with pleasure as I savored the flavors! Yum! This restaurant is in a small and nondescript shopping center, and would be very difficult to come upon its charm if you only see it from the outside, but once inside, it is lovely. Tried this restaurant tonight on the recommendation of my fellow Yelpers. It's pretty much the way others described, and that's what I LOVE about this website.......VERY reliable resources for assessing new (to us) places of business. I went there knowing it was on the expensive side, and while portions were plentiful, and I enjoyed the food, the quality and quantity probably didn't merit what they charged. I enjoyed the meal, definitely, but it wasn't the best on this planet, either. $29 for Chilean Sea Bass, I don't know, just seems rather high. If I had wanted crab legs, for a 1/2 pound, it would have cost $29, and an extra $11 for 1 pound of them. That'd be $40....just seems excessive to me. Yet, the prices would not deter me from returning, either. As for the food, the Chilean Sea Bass was very good. It was sauteed and served perfectly cooked with a mildly spicy mango salsa. I liked the sea bass with and without the salsa, but the salsa added another flavor dimension to it. While they're known for their baked stuffed potato, when I heard it's made with sour cream, I opted out from that....not a sour cream fan, so I just got it with butter. Unfortunately, the baked potato was overbaked.....or sitting around too long......not sure which. It was still edible, but I've had better. My husband had the ribs and chicken combo, and while he didn't comment much on the chicken, he loved the ribs. He said he'd come back next time and get a full rack. My daughter had the roast beef dip, which I tasted. It was served on their garlic flavored sourdough bread, and while it looked very dried out, it actually wasn't. It had really good flavor, and there was at least 2 inches worth of roast beef stuffed into each half. The au jus was not too salty. My husband had a bowl of their clam chowder, which was very good. Not the best I've had, but I have to say, it had a great flavor, and I could taste sherry in it, which I loved. Probably a little thin for my liking. The salads were plain, just lettuce and tomato (but oh, what a tomato....it had such GREAT flavor), and the dressings were ordinary to me. There are two basic types of ranch dressing.....the mayonnaise version...or the sour cream. This one was sour cream, so it was lost on me. I prefer the mayo way. We also tried two desserts.........the tuxedo cake, which had white chocolate and dark chocolate mousse filling with sponge cake, and a yummy chocolate ganache topping. They then drizzled Hershey's syrup over that.......they should have left that off. To me, Hershey's syrup is so over-rated......there was enough oooeey-goooey factor to this cake, it didn't need it. We also ordered a peach cobbler......while it tasted good, they didn't serve the cobbler part warm, and they definitely should have. They also didn't put enough vanilla ice cream, but they put more than enough whipped cream. Leave off the whipped cream and put on more ice cream, that's my vote. The cobbler topping was more of a crumble, as opposed to a sheet of pie crust, and frankly, I DO prefer it this way. It had the perfect blend of brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and of course, flour. Yet, they didn't heat it !!! Oh, one last criticism......I really didn't taste too many peaches, believe it or not. The ratio of cobbler crust to peaches was not good........usually, I complain the other way.....not enough crust. This time, I feel like there should have been more peaches. While I have criticisms and am very much a food snob, I will say, hands down, EVERYTHING had really good FLAVOR. EVERYTHING. That is soooooooooo important to me, so for whatever the flaws are, they are forgiven in my book. This is a place I'll return to, but because their prices are a bit steep, it won't be right away. The ambience was nice, and while I could hear everyone else's conversations, the very dim lighting (perhaps a bit too dim) helped to make the experience more of a private feeling. I can't find a damn thing to not like about this place! In fact, I felt a little guilty for the great deal we were getting: 1. No corkage. Bring your own wine! Woot! 2. You can split meals. 3. If you split a meal, they do all the splitting for you so you don't have to awkwardly slice your steak after it arrives. 4. If you split a meal, you just pay the cost of a side and both parties get a salad or soup. I had the salad with blue cheese, and it was yum. 5. Nice service. I suggest making a reservation. Just had our 4 year wedding anniversary dinner there. AMAZING service from our server Anna. The food was TOO delicious!! Didn't want it to end. Crab stuffed mushrooms, salad, garlic bread, French onion soup (yummmm), steak and Maine lobster tail. The steak, without exaggeration melts in your mouth and amazing flavor. For desert their fried cheesecake...ridiculous!! :) My husband is such a sweetheart and stopped by the restaurant with a beautiful bouquet of flowers which he requested Anna have at our table with a bottle of champagne that he brought in also (no corkage fee). Father's Day, 2013, was our first ever trip to Sutter's Mill. We'd received a mailer that piqued our interest, so what better way to celebrate the holiday than to go out for a family dinner? Upon entry, we were greeted with courtesy and provided a comfortable booth. The decor is a bit dated, but not so much that it detracts from one's dining experience. The food, however, was quite good. Our family shared a Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer and all three of us ordered the Top Sirloin Steak dinner. We received garlic bread, a choice of soup or salad, and a choice of one side to go with dinner. The wife had steak fries, the daughter onion rings, and grilled asparagus for me. For another $4, we also added a side of sauteed onions and mushrooms. Again, everything was quite delicious and surprisingly affordable. With each of us having iced tea, our bill was $74. So, for the price of going to a chain like Outback, you can have a more personal dining experience with better food and quality, efficient service. After reading some of the reviews on here, I suspect that we'll also be back for a brunch experience in the future. Great family place. read more

We've been coming here for years and is always great, but last night, 12/15/19, was by far the most amazing experience we've had at a restaurant. We had a large birthday celebration which they gave us a private back room for and we were so thrilled. On top of that, the service was beyond perfect. Our waitresses were Christine and Gabriella who could not have done any better. They were professional, attentive, and always one step ahead of us. Every one of our guests kept commenting on how amazing they were and how good the food was. It was truly the perfect birthday party and we would definitely recommend this restaraunt for both an intimate date night or a large birthday celebration. You can't go wrong here. read more

Went with hubby on a Saturday night and they were able to seat us right away. The restaurant was busy, so we were glad to see that. Our server was quick to take our drink order, a plus as well. We had the bacon wrapped shrimp to start. The shrimp was good size and the cocktail type sauce they serve it with was very good, but I think next time we would just do the shrimp cocktail. Salad was very good, very fresh. Hubby had the clam chowder which was quite thick, but good flavor. We both had prime rib, and it was delicious. I had veggies with mine instead of a starch, and my server asked me if I'd like some hollandaise on the side for it (I had asked for a little ranch). Great idea! Their hollandaise is a little different, but it was soooo good. We enjoyed the meal, it was a little nice surprise in Simi Valley. I had a dinner party and ordered a prime rib roast from Sutter's. Joe was a delight to work with, he gave me a fair price and even gave me some aju sause (wich other restaurants I called said that would be extra) he had my roast ready on time. It was tender and delicious!! My guest all seemed to have enjoyed it. When we walked in we got seated right away. Food was good...service not so good. It just went downhill from there! Ordered drinks and they came quickly. We were served wrong drinks. finally ordered food, waited for almost an hour only to have two of the 7 of us get the wrong meals. When the server finally came to give us our correct meals, everyone else was almost finished. He even brough out blue cheese, instead of ranch. No apologies, no compensation. This review is based only on the woman doing the seating on Sunday March 3rd, At 12:30 pm. I am sure the owners or managers did not teach her to rudely attack you with "Do You Have A Reservation"? Instead of hi how are? Can I help you? After that we were rudely told with no reservation it will be at least an hour! I think somebody with better manners needs to be at the front of the house! read more
