Well, when I dine I enjoy a drink or two before dinner. That being said, they need to hire new bartenders or have someone teach the ones they have to make a good drink. Took my wife here to celebrate valentines on Sunday. We were very pleasantly surprised by the decor and ambiance once we were sat in a cozy booth. Our waitress was delightful and did an amazing job. The Food was great we had and wedge salad and bacon wrapped shrimp for our appetizer and we both got the prime rib. Our 54th wedding anniversary was on a Thursday (7/24). It has been a (sort of) tradition for us to have prime rib for our anniversary. This year I could not find 'anyplace' that had prime-rib on a Thursday. Even some of the best 'steak houses'. "Only on weekends" is all I got. BUT THEN!!! A suggestion...Try Sutters Mill in Simi. We DID and it was AMAZING!!!!. We arrived shortly after they opened (4 PM) and were seated immediately. We heard about the free corkage and brought a bottle of J Lohr chard with us. How cool :)) It just kept getting Better. We each ordered 8 oz. prime rib with the stuffed baked potato (absolute Must). We both had a take-home box of delicious memories. It's been a while since the last time we ate here. Thinking on some good reviews seen recently, it was decided to give Sutter's Mill another try and we are glad we did. Not only has the food improved from that last visit, but the service and decor seems much nicer as well. We'd not been back since well before the plague closed everything you see. I had the prime rib and must say that it was mighty fine this time. We tried the bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer, and finished with the peach cobbler and two doggie bags. This place is a throwback and, in fact, goes back to the 1950s. It is dark inside and quite huge, but broken up into a catacomb of booths, split between several rooms. Sometimes a restaurant just isn't a fit for you. In my lifetime of dining out there have been occasions where I felt uncomfortable just being in a space, feeling like the vibe was off, or the menu had nothing that interested me. Lots of fried food-only as an option will often send me out the door. It's awkward, but I have got up and left an establishment before ordering several times in the past. While Sutter's Mill isn't at the level, I still don't love it. There's a new Wendy's drive-thru next door, which has reduced the available parking for Sutter's Mill. It was painful to negotiate the tight parking lot and find somewhere to situate our car. Once inside to meet our friends for a birthday gathering, they all remarked on the same issues. As a group of 9, we were seated in their back room with other larger parties. A large cave of a space with dated wallpaper, it's nowhere near the charm of the main dining room. It felt like we were squished into the least expensive space in a convention hall. Tables too close together, volume level high, there was no easy way to converse with the other end of the table, which I didn't enjoy. A positive note - our server was a champ. There was no easy way to serve in the cramped space, but she made it work as best as possible with good grace and a winning smile. She was the main reason for even two stars at this otherwise very mediocre dining experience. The food was largely a disappointment. Their entrees come with a soup or salad, plus a choice of sides. I mistakenly picked the vegetable beef soup. A watery mess, there was no way not to have it slop over onto the saucer, which it did as it was served to me. The seasoning was bland, and the vegetables consisted of a couple pieces of potato, bits of onion, and not much else. I don't recall any green veggies at all. The beef was limited and tough. Completely forgettable and regrettable. Canned Campbell's or Progresso would be a big improvement. Since Dear Hubby and I weren't seated next to each other, we didn't share an entree as we often do. I chose the Chicken Picatta with a simple baked potato on the side. He inexplicably chose the shrimp with marinara sauce. While my chicken was very flavorful with a savory taste of mushrooms and capers, it lacked the traditional lemony component of a Picatta sauce. I would have enjoyed the lemon! Also, while a plentiful portion came, sadly the chicken wasn't even close to fork tender. Enough said about the overly chewy chicken. The baked potato was serviceable. A lack of garnish on the plate made for a boring presentation. Also, the restaurant doesn't provide any bread or rolls for the table. One can order garlic bread, which normally I would have considered, but figuring that the rest of the meal would be on the heavy side, I decided to pass. Some of our friends were also disappointed that bread wasn't part of the meal. DH later told me that his shrimp tasted like they'd been pre-breaded and came out of the freezer. He wasn't impressed with the taste or quality. The most tasty part of the meal was the peach cobbler we split. The flavor combo came together beautifully, and it offered just the right amount of sweetness. This was our first trip here. It reminded me of places I used to go with my parents. Cozy booths, soft lighting. The prime rib was so tender, I checked to make sure my knife wasn't super sharp. We came here midweek. The new patio with hanging lights is a nice touch. The quality of their meats is really high. The meat on its own has nice flavor. The service was great and the blue cheese salad dressing appears to be house made. My wife had the filet, medium. It came with a stuffed potato and green beans. The filet was rare in the middle not even medium rare but straight up rare. Not that big of a deal, since it was such a large cut of meat. I decided on the prime rib. The meat was good, the au jus was outstanding. The jus had lots of garlic in it. I personally found the meats and the stuffed baked potato to be under seasoned. The green beans tasted like a tin can, it took me back to my childhood, crappy over-boiled canned string beans. There was some high points and unfortunately some low points in the meal. I met some family here for an early dinner on a Saturday, they used to go to the original located downtown by Sylmar years ago and were hoping this location lived up to their memories and expectations. Well let me say, they said that it did and more, and even rated the ribeye as one of their top 3 ever! Menu items are simple yet delicious; I got the filet lignin which was very tasty and cooked great to medium as I ordered it. The stuffed baked potato was ok but not bad. They should maybe have another veggie option to get rather than the plain green beans, but it's ok as those aren't the star of the show or why you come here anyway. Our server was delightful - We ordered our steaks medium and it was terribly undercooked - we also were such big fans of the sauces that they served that complimented the meats - sadly they are no longer offered either, not even upon request either- Our lovely server offered us apiece of prime rib as a replacement, which I brought home, and sadly the edges were also bloody- We are nostalgic for the past, so sorry it didn't work out - we expected me more for the price point- wishing luck and hope it was an anomaly. read more

We went here for the first time as a family last night it was very slow maybe 5 tables total, we were excited to try a local steak place maybe now we could stop going to Moorpark for dinner. We ordered filet mignon for both my husband and myself. We asked for it to be cooked medium. Upon receiving the steak it was totally burned outside but completely raw on the inside. I ate it as I was starving however my husband pushed his away and attempted to eat his side of Mac and cheese but this was also freezing cold. My kids food Mac and cheese and a burger were also barely warm. The table next to us had the same issues and had their steaks remade however they didn't bring the people next to us a new steak but instead went and put the one they had already cut into back on the grill. This is a serious food safety violation not to mention disgusting. The waitress never came back to check on us so we never had a chance for a remake and spend our entire meal with no drinks. When she finally showed up with the bill we explained about my husbands steak thinking she would either 1 take it off the bill as he only ate one bite or 2. Offer us a remake for home. She did neither they charged us nearly $90 for only one of us to have eaten. When I requested to speak to a manager, some random looking waiter walked over claiming he was the mod didn't even give me his name till I asked twice. He finally told me his name was Josh, when I informed him about the steaks and the fact we would not be returning he just shrugged his shoulders and said sorry and that they had been having that issue all night. Like wtf if you're having the same issue over and over you speak to your chef and turn down the grill it's not that hard. Not even a real apology or an offer of a refund or credit for next time to try them again. This morning I woke up with severe food poisoning so please everyone stay away from this place if you want steak. I cannot attest to their other food but we most definitely will not be returning or recommending this place to anyone. Update to my review about sutters mill, I went ahead and contacted the manager who also is the daughter-in-law of the Owner only to be told that because I didn't let them know while I was actually eating the food and waited till after we were done eating and the server had cleared our plates, that we were not entitled to any sort of compensation, even though I got sick. She tried to claim that I was lying and that no steaks were returned last night to the kitchen, even though I was literally sitting next to the person who had their steak returned, and re-brought out. However she did mention after that for everybody's information, they will refire the same food apparently they claim they put it on a different part of the grill and the rest of the food, however this is not only gross but illegal. When I informed her of that, she became defensive and started yelling at me saying She literally doesn't care if we don't come back, she doesn't care that I got sick or that the management was lacking yesterday in offering me a refund or anything, and then she hung up on me. Hopefully others see my post and can avoid this place in the future cuz they ABSOLUTELY DON'T CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS AT ALL! read more

Really sad to write this because I really wanted to like it. We wanted to support a small independent restaurant in town for my husband's birthday so we chose Sutter Mill. The server forgot to enter one of our appetizers so we reassured her it was okay. We were enjoying the cheese bread that did come out. When our food arrived the Mac and cheese was barely warm. We try not to send back food but Mac and cheese has to be warm! So we waited for that to come back. The ribeye steak hubby got was just okay (nothing exciting). And my prime rib was on the chewy side. The fresh horseradish I requested gave it some flavor. We mentioned to server that it was hubby's birthday and he selected this restaurant. I know prime rib is not usually hot but this was cold. The salads are a joke and the cheese bread is like something you'd make at home (not in a good way). The service was only ok. I am grateful to have received a large, perfectly cooked and perfectly beefy tasting prime rib of high-quality plus a classic stuffed potato and a great old-school salad on a chilled plate with homemade dressing for a very reasonable cost So few places like this exist anymore and it's too bad There was no sacrifice whatsoever in standards; the beef had that certain beefy taste that one got at places like Lowery's. The stuffed potato reminded me of how they used to be. Fluffy and loaded with good stuff The chilled salad plate with the homemade dressing took me back in time in a very good way Our server could not have been better. She was very friendly and efficient. They have been doing the same thing here a long time and they are really really good at it. The decor was great. It took me back, and somehow was warm and embracing. Even the horseradish sauce was perfectly done. This was our first time at Sutter's Mill last night. We all ordered different items. Both of us that ordered our steaks "medium", had them delivered on the very rare side. The salmon was very smelly and definitely not fresh. We sent it back. Everyone who had macaroni and cheese as a side said it was cold-not warm- cold.
