The staff are nice and the design of this place is art However, I do not recommend the ordering food or drinks. The best thing I had on the menu was the root beer soda which comes from a can. The bread is too chewy, plus the portion they give you is too small for the price you pay. The seasoning here is very bland. Basically come here if you want to watch your money burn away for a mediocre meal. I guess they have an extensive wine list but you might as well just go to Total Wine to pick up the same stuff read more

Swedish Hill is a classic in Austin now. They just completed a remodel into a clean, modern look. I have not had lunch here in a while, but it's a great place for good coffee, a pastry, and gelato. Given the quality of baked goods it is also a great place for sandwiches. Besides the expanded seating area there is a nice patio. Parking is available on the street, often available. Simple service. Come in order and find a free seat. They do a good job of cleaning tables, so you don't have to wait long looking for a place to sit. I used to be a regular here. The food was always done very well and the deli and bakery are always clean, but I got tired of being told no. After a year of eating here 3 or 4 times a week I was always told no. No you can't have any substitutions. No, we have lemons and asparagus, but won't put them on your pizza. No we won't serve you meatballs today or let you take them away... The final straw was when I ordered food to go at 11:00. I came in at 11:45. It wasn't busy and asked to pick up. They said no it wasn't scheduled for pickup for a half hour. I said it's not busy. Can't you just throw the tuna on bread and hand me a loaf of bread and a cookie? No. I had someplace to be. I said you know what. That's enough no's for me. Please cancel the order. I'll get it somewhere else. It's a shame. I love the food and the cleanliness. The bagel was good, but it was served with a side of nastiness from EVERY employee in the place. The cashier never said a word to me or looked at me as he flipped the screen around to ask me for at least a 15% to 25% tip. I for some inexplicable reason tipped 20%. We went to the table with a buzzer which I placed there. At some point this huffy woman in a black dress came over muttering something and forcefully moved it to the outside corner of my table. Huh?! My bagel arrived from an equally sour curly headed blonde. I asked politely "do you have any salt and pepper?" She rolled her eyes at me and scoffed as if I had asked her to perform some Herculean task and then dropped a pepper , not a salt, on the table never even looking at me. In all my years of dining in restaurants around the world and even owning one myself have a seen such a utter display of rudeness and entitlement. If you would like even a modicum of respect and appreciation for your patronage, I would walk on by this place. There's plenty more places in Austin who will treat you well. read more

I can't possibly explain the way this place makes me feel. it's just so. damn. good. And the service is top notch. I almost don't want to say too much because its already too busy/popular in there. The bagel and lox, the baked goods, the breakfast sandwich, everything. I went 3 of 4 days I was in the area, staying in Austin. I would honestly consider moving to this part of town simple to have walking access to Swedish hill and the surrounding restaurants (Pecan Square cafe, Clarke's, etc.) - if you need a proper place to hang out and get a coffee, don't mess this one up. Close to were we were staying, very pricey but there were not a lot of options in the vicinity , the Kouign Amann was decent but for $5 definitely not worth although it had nice layering but missed on the Breton salty/sweet density experience I was hoping to get, I guess in Texas this would be called All Hat, no Cattle. read more

Egg salad was good, it's rare to find a cafe that does egg salad without celery and they nailed it! (Personal preference on the celery, it shouldn't be in egg salad!!!!!!) We came to Swedish Hill at 10am on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to find a parking spot in the back, the line was not too long, and we were able to pick from a few tables inside to sit and eat. The ambience was really nice and it was great for a Sunday morning brunch. The staff were pretty friendly. The food, though, was pretty average for how much it cost. $18 for a bagel and lox - and it was fine. It was a bagel and lox, and it came deconstructed (you'd think the $18 would pay for the professionals to construct it for me!). Avocado toast was...avocado toast. None of the food really blew us away and there wasn't really anything unique about what they were offering, which made us question why we paid so much for it. I'd probably come back when I want to sit with a nice bakery item and some coffee, but won't choose this place for full meals. read more

Okay. I read the other reviews. If you don't like "new" Austin, leave. You sound so salty. Now on to the review. This place has great customer service! With it being a bakery and all, it has a considerable amount of seating. Plenty of natural light, if that is your bag. Great cold brew. I will say...it is a little pricey. This place will be more of a treat for me rather than a usual stop. I got the lox plate with the everything bagel. Keep in mind: portion size is traditional, not Texas sized here. The green tomatoes were such a nice touch on the plate. (Haven't had that since I was a kid) It was perfect for me! I will be back soon to try more of the menu. read more

Stopped in for pastries. I am always looking for a delicious almond croissant and Kougin Amann. We ordered one of each along with a chocolate croissant and a bacon and cheddar scone. We also ordered iced lattes. The pastries were served on cute wood boards. They were buttery, had delicious layers, leaving flakes of yumminess on the table and in my lap - an indication of the effort put into these creations. The bacon and cheddar scone was tasty - I'm a sweet connoisseur, not savory. But the scone was devoured by those at the table. We were given a buzzer for the iced lattes however they were delivered to our table. They were tasty. I appreciated they were coffee forward and not acidic. An employee came and bussed out plates. This is the almond croissant to beat. We will be back to try meals and definitely for more pastries! If you know of a better one please message me as I'm always on the hunt for the best. Tasty Nutella croissant, egg and tuna salad but very overpriced especially for black coffee.

PSA some of the best babka I've EVER had. Stop in here, take a number, and while you wait in line relish in the beauty of the baked goods and free smells. Grab a coffee and a few treats (obviously the babka) and take them outside to the patio area to enjoy the Texas sunshine. You'll probably see a dog or two. I used to really really like this place: Breads, pastries, tea, salads, etc., ... since yesterday. Yesterday was the first day I was coming back there after a least 10 months. I was with a friend who didn't know the place and she was very excited to discover it, well... To make it short, when we started to place our order, the cashier/employee said to me: "Pull your mask higher on your face or I can't serve you!" To my friend: "Yuck! I don't touch cash! I had ordered during a lil rush so I was semi-expecting a wait but around 20 min later, after everyone else and then some had already gotten their food, I asked the person running the espresso/order calling about my food. She was very dismissive but she did turn around and say that they were working on it. SPOILER, they were not. After another 20 min I overheard the other workers asking the kitchen staff if they had my order, to which he said no. So they hadn't even begun to make it. After five minutes I went to ask the same worker if there was "anyway to see where it was" and she wordlessly handed my bag and turned away. I had really high hopes for this place and this interaction completely ruined it for me. They didn't offer any explanation or apologize or compensation, I would've even taken a customer service "I'm sorry smile/shrug", I'm very easy to please. Food and coffee here is super yum! My go-to for when I'm n just looking for a snack is their chocolate croissant with an iced latte. Never disappoints! The only major con for me is that the parking is horrendous. Back in spots out front are anxiety inducing since everyone behind you is going fast and gets irritated. The lot behind has potholes and extremely rough paving that shakes my car, and there's a section where it's angled parking BUT the only entryway is also the exit, so in order to leave, you have to drive backwards. I've always heard great things about this place and everytime I drive by they are always packed. But I really have to say I dont think it lived up to the hype. I've came here 3 different times and each time it was just not worth the price. The first time I got the lox bagel for breakfast. This was a great lox bagel and the smoked salmon was really good but ever since then it hasnt really done it for me. The other times I had the Italian and The James. The Italian was what it was but nothing that will knock your socks off. I didn't think the sandwich had enough of the vinegar kick and the meats they had on there weren't that flavorful. I figured I would give it one last try and went back a month or so later and decided to get The James. The James was a dry sandwich and the bread was just too much and to thick. It was difficult to chew. It wasnt stale but it was just difficult to bite off and eat. Maybe I am just ordering the wrong thing here but I really dont see what people love about this place. The best prime rib I've ever had in Austin. It's a strange feeling when you're eating a dish at a restaurant and you think "this doesn't need anything else"; the only time that has happened to me is in France. And I'm told that the prime rib is always readily available every day they're open, as opposed to every steak house that serves it in Austin. Service was impeccable--thanks, Carrie! Judging from the other reviews I only hope that this place doesn't suffer the same fate that so many other great restaurants have in Austin. like 'The Big Night', where Olive Garden puts a great restaurant out of business. We were pleasantly surprised by Swedish Hill when we went here last Sunday for the first time. It was still early (#fouryearoldlife), so the place was pleasantly quiet and we were able to sit down in peace at a big table in the back. We love the aesthetic here and the "foodie-themed" Christmas tree was a nice touch. One of us ordered a dirty chai and it 100000% came out with no espresso in it, so that was a bummer of a start. Iced coffee was good and our kiddo was happy with her overpriced/gourmet hot chocolate. For food, it was the fish and bagel appetizer board, the Clarksville crunch salad, a cinnamon roll, and an almond croissant. The board left a lot to be desired: we asked for untoasted bagels but they came out toasted (an abomination IOHO as former NYers!) and some of the fish was not up to snuff. The baked goods were OK and we definitely enjoyed the salad. Prices were high, but not egregiously so. Even though we're giving this place three (enthusiastic) stars, we feel confident that we can have a four-star experience there and would be happy to come back. read more

Super cute little bakery spot that offers a selection of dishes perfect for brunch. Seating is a bit of an issue with the popularity of this spot + limited tables. We snagged a table for two on the side wall which is next to the parking lot. I gotta say...the amount of flies that we had to defend against while eating took away from the experience. I think it could be a lot more enjoyable with more desirable seating! We got the smoked salmon and bagel board which was really tasty! Worth a try if it's not crazy packed. read more
